It is not my habit to review recipe books. I have many of them, but I don’t normally have the patience to use them nor to measure ingredients. I’m more a ‘bit of this and a dash of that’ type of cook, and I have these books simply to stimulate my own imagination. However, I have (surprise, surprise) followed recipes from this book and for the most part I have actually measured ingredients (with occasional minor modifications). As I’m sure that I’m not the only reader who has taken to bread baking during lockdown, I’d like to share that the recipes in this book are excellent. I have made several different loaves, and I’m happy to report that each one exceeded expectations.

The first three chapters are devoted to bread machines, ingredients and storing basics. The list of recipes is as follows:

In most instances ingredients are given for three different loaf sizes. Preparation time is usually no more than five minutes, but the automated kneading, rising and baking usually take several hours. It is well worth making as there is nothing like the aroma and flavour of freshly baked bread! A Farmhouse White Loaf is baking as I post this review.

Please note I am reviewing the UK edition.

The author never tells us where these recipes originated, but I now assume America. The recipes have been amended to use metric weights and measures. There are good reviews. I assumed, silly me, that the author had gone to the trouble of amending these recipes for the UK market.

Nowhere are we warned that these are American recipes so the quantities of sugar and therefore I assume yeast and salt will need to be adjusted. The sugar suggested would seem to be 2 to 3 times what would be correct for the equivalent UK adjusted recipes. The author must be aware of this as later in the book when she gives the recipe for a British cottage loaf the sugar is correct and dramatically lower than elsewhere.

Ideally the author would have reworked the recipes, but alternatively I would have accepted a prominent warning. To do neither is sloppy, lazy and dissevering of the one star rating I have given.

Now, I’m hungry!

This book has almost all the recipes I’ve been searching Google for, except for a couple of mixes for Scones, Crumpets or tea cakes! Luckily, I don’t need a book to teach me how to make them. If you’re diabetic, vegan or need gluten-free breads, you are covered. The recipes in this book are so helpful, I can satisfy my friends and family with bakes for all occasions and from all over Europe - I’m starting NOW!
