As the MELT bacteria spirals out of control, Bill Everlee works feverishly to prepare for what his wife predicts will be a catastrophic emergency. Alice, meanwhile, sees the results of MELT first-hand, realizing that even her worst predictions were grossly understated as MELT continues to wreak havoc in an ever-widening area.... A new, intensely thrilling series, MELT has received unanimous praise from beta readers and early reviewers alike. Written by Kate Pickford and Mike Kraus, MELT examines a part of our world that we often take for granted. Add in a dash of real science and a glimpse of what the future might hold in store and you're presented with the recipe for a frightenly real post-apocalyptic thriller. MELT is a novel-length series will be released on a monthly basis.
Book 2 focuses on the kids, Paul is on his own in the city, having been separated from his dad, Bill. He's doing his best to fumble through the catastrophic destruction all around him. He's also finding out, the hard way, what MELT can do to a person. Additionally, he gets told some information about his parents that send him reeling with shock. As of the end of book 4 this isn't resolved.
Aggie is trying to hold Midge, Petra, and Petra's boyfriend, Sean, together, at the cabin, with some well-meaning but intrusive neighbors, Jo, Betsy, and Jim telling her what to do. It gets a bit easier for Aggie when her grandmother, Margaret, unexpectedly arrives.
Paul is left with the care of "patient zero" as he travels through the city looking for his parents.
Meanwhile, back at the cabin, they're dealing with Petra's boyfriend, Sean, who was critically injured and an unwelcome visitor from Bill's past, whose backstory we get in book 3. Things get more complicated when Michael, a co-worker of Alice's arrives in their midst.
This was a very short book 2 and unlike the first book where Alice and Bill were the focus, they do not appear at all here, save as the objects of Paul's search. There were some editing issues here, though nothing very disruptive. I also found it odd that Alice and Bill with all of their preparation and forming a cooperative with the others in the cabin area, never bothered to tell their children about this arrangement. The kids in general, while having a lot of admirable gumption, get too much latitude here, especially when they do not seem to appreciate the approaching danger. Paul is on a mission to find his friends, yet diverts to protect Angelina instead of helping the adults who need to help her to determine how to fight MELT. I will still likely read book 3 to see if the story improves.
The book opens with a recap of the previous book which I think is a good idea. The entire book is about Alice, Paul and others trying to escape the total destruction of Manhattan. The MELT bacteria/virus/whatever has spread totally beyond control and the entire island is not only being destroyed from the top but it's being destroyed from the bottom.
Paul's main goal, outside of his own survival, is to get Angelina, the young girl who was the first person to be infected, to safety. All that part of the book is done well.
Meanwhile, back at the cabin, things are getting a whole lot worse. There's fire, there's shooting and one person there might just be the saboteur that started off the entire disaster. This part is also well done.
The second book was even worse. Oh dear heavens, that bloody drama... I didn’t want to read a young adult book when I started this series. But I was stuck in the children’s heads for the whole book. To deny reality for these kids that age is totally normal and believable at first, but dear book god at one point they should have gotten it. It was just frustrating and unnecessary. Just get on with bloody damn story. But instead they are running around like headless chickens not getting anything done and then making it even worse. The adults treat the children like they are ruling the narrativ, picking up after their mess.
You went through the entire book with no word on Alice or Bill! In the first place there's no way Bill would have left those kids or allowed his oldest son to go into this mess! And there's no way Alice would have had children with that wannabe! She and Bill are a pair not to be trifled with. Why mess with Paul's head like that when he's already in a bad space both physically and mentally! Yes I know it's supposed to add to the story line. I find it absurd! Mike Kraus I am not happy with you!
I was spot on with my review of book one.... There is MAJOR action happening in book two!!!! It's so engrossing, that I couldn't put the book down!!!!!! If the rest of the series is as exciting and suspenseful as book two then we are in for ONE HELL OF A TREAT!!!!!!!!! Another plus on this series is that the authors give you a quick summary about the series up to the book you are reading.... which is good if you have to wait a while for the next book!!! I wish that ALL authors would do this!!!!
Yes more of the Melt! Very much enjoyed captivated for the most part, read until i could not keep my eyes open and so excited to continue in this epic adventure. Note how much more plastic you will be aware of in your day to day life. Interesting idea for a apocalyptic novel, for which I am constantly searching. Picking up apocalyptic stories with fungus or bugs of some sort. This has been a very interesting change of pace.
Struggling to survive, facing each problem and tackling each crisis that this out of control world can deal you. Each character faces the end of their world string and sometimes very independently. Keep reading this series, follow friends, family and enemies alike.
The first book was great but the second just full of too many improbabilities. I won’t list them so that there are no spoilers, but things got ridiculously dramatic very quickly. The authors need to get back to the subtlety of the first book which was a great read.
really quick read with good characters but it seem yet again to be that series that keeps stretching it out with outrageous events - and this is me suspending reality beliefs - and there will be yet another book. it may never end.
I have ended and will not be awaiting with baited breath for the final - or perhaps not - book in the series.
JJP/MK have penned the second SYFY novel in the Melt Series. Dad leaves the Survival Camp to locate Mom. Mom has disappeared and Dad mortally wounded. The son is trapped with no apparent way out. People and buildings are collapsing all around. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
This portion of the series can be a little difficult to follow in some places. Also, the author needs to research military rankings. No EM would ever be allowed to address a senior EM or an NCO as "sir". It would be Yes, Corporal or Yes, Sgt. Sir is for officers and officers only. No senior EM or NCO is an officer and do not wish to be referred to as such.
The book Sink - Melt Book Two was truly awesome. The characters were carried over nicely from Book One. The author kept my interest through our the entire book. Makes me ready for more.
Once I started reading Melt Book 2 I literally could not put it down!! Keeping up with this family is all I wanted to do. Now I’m stuck till the end of April to get this cliff hanger off of my mind!!
What happens when disaster strikes and the adults of the family are missing? Can the young survive? Can they defend against invaders who want to take everything they have?
This installment got off to a rather ragged start and became plodding mid-way through. But after that it picked up and things seem to be back to moving a long. Just be prepared to wonder if Manhattan will ever end.
Would you be prepared to survive and do what it takes to keep the people you love safe. Fast-paced and full of surprises, I literally didn’t put the book down till I read the last page.
Not a bad read. Still.feel the author needs to be more descriptive. 2 books in and my imagination has had nothing to work with to picture the characters and surroundings.
Paul and Aggie, such great charters showing strength, resilience, and a fierce loyalty! And Jo... I knew there had to be more to her but wow!! Can't wait to dive in to book3!!!
I would like to say brilliant but too many cliched and stupid characters. If there’s a wrong way of doing something they do it. It’s also long drawn out at times. Don’t get me wrong, I’m enjoying it but it’s a bit hard going at times.
The concept of a plastic eating bacteria causing the end of Manhattan is unique and this story grabs the reader by the throat and never lets go. Well written and a cast of characters anyone can relate to. Five stars for sure!
This is another fast and furious story of survival for the family which caused this devastation. Oh, I was expecting another good story, but it' just a repetitious story of book one. Very disappointed.
I can't stop. Won't stop. Finished the 1st and grabbed the 2nd within minutes. This series is amazing. No guessing which direction you're headed in. I'll need another nap before book 3.
This series has everything I like! Unusual ideas. Not just one gunfight after another. Real prepping, paying off. Excitement. No typos(!) Good editing.
Action was on most every page with twists that I didn’t see coming at all. Cliff hanger ending which I hate! Now I have to wait for the next book in the series!
Enjoying the book. Fast paced. A entertaining story. Very unique storyline. Interesting characters. Looking forward to reading Book three. Already downloaded.
