The book begins well and gets straight to the point with its plot. There is a malevolent spirit haunting Hillwood Farm and Callie Sinclair, a clairvoyant, is called upon by the owner Alice Turner to figure out who this spirit is and what does it want, much to the annoyance of her grandson Luke who thinks Callie is just another scam artist out to make money. But soon he begins to question his initial suspicion when all evidence point to an actual haunting and Callie becomes the target of this vengeful spirit as well.
The haunting episodes described in the initial chapters are pretty terrifying and spooky but then it begins to go downhill when the author decides to add a love story angle between the protagonists. From here, the story takes a predictable turn towards its climax (I managed to figure out who the spirit was halfway into the book). I personally feel that the author should have downplayed the love story and concentrated just on the supernatural aspect for a more satisfying paranormal story.
My thanks to the author for giving me a copy of this book to read via NetGalley.
A quick easy enjoyable read for the most part. This was a story that I did not need to think about a lot... I was really liking it, enjoying the fact that it was a story without complications-- more or less a comfort read, until the end where I felt that the plot took a turn that was ridiculous considering the people involved. Actually ridiculous no matter what, but with the people involved even more so. Still, for the most part I enjoyed the main characters and most of the plot. The 3.5 stars I am giving this story because it gave me, for most of the story, what I was hoping read.
I enjoyed this audiobook! I usually go into books as blindly as possible so I didn't know a whole lot about this one when I got started. I actually had missed the faces at the top of the book's cover so I didn't even guess that there would be some romance. It all worked out since I really enjoy romance and I loved the way that it was combined with the other elements in the books. I am really glad that I decided to give this one a try!
So this book did have a romantic element but it really was so much more than that. Mrs. Turner has been experiencing some strange things at her farm since her husband's sudden death a few months prior. She calls Callie to help figure out what is going on. Callie can talk to ghosts and really just wants to help if she can but she is not surprised when Luke, Mrs. Turner's grandson, doesn't trust her motives.
I really liked the characters in this story. Callie had a really interesting past and I really enjoyed learning how she acquired her gift. It was obvious right away that she really had good motives and just wanted to help. Luke was pretty open-minded once the story really got going. He cared about his family and their farm and wanted to make sure that everyone was safe. I liked watching Luke and Callie come together and thought that they had great chemistry.
I believe that this was the first time that I have had the chance to listen to the narration work of Kristen James. I thought that she did a great job with this story and really brought the story to life. There were some pretty intense scenes and I think that her delivery added to the impact of the story. I liked the voice that she used for the characters. She had a very pleasant voice that was easy to listen to for hours at a time.
I would recommend this book to others. I thought that this was the perfect combination of romance and creepy ghost story. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up more from this talented author!
I received a review copy of this audiobook from Kathryn Knight as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions.
Initial Thoughts I enjoyed this audiobook! This was more of a romance than anything but I liked the creepy ghost elements that were present. The narrator did a fantastic job with this as well.
Callie has a gift of speaking with ghosts, a gift which changed her life forever. When an elderly widow begs for her help, she agrees. From the moment Callie sets foot on Hillwood Farm, she senses danger. A vindictive spirit is terrorizing both Mrs. Turner and her drop-dead gorgeous grandson, Luke. But Callie’s disrupting the ghost’s plans and instead turns its vengeance on her. Accidents turn Callie’s calm demeanor to icy fear. Will she survive long enough to help rid Hillwood Farm of this ghost and more importantly, will Callie and Luke let down their walls and surrender to love?
I can honestly confess this book scared me to death. Once the haunting began, I clung to my tablet and couldn’t look away. The paranormal descriptions were so realistic and life-like, my significant other had to keep telling me to breathe. Think Samara from The Ring and you’ll get a sense of what I’m talking about. By the time I finished, I could only read it in the daylight and with someone else present.
Callie and Luke’s romance is slow-burning which I loved. It also added depth and a sweetness to the otherwise tense-filled story. Sure, they had issues to work through but every couple deals with conflict.
If you’re looking for a spooky romantic suspense, you’ll love The Haunting of Hillwood Farm. Kathryn Knight has mastered the art of paranormal romantic suspense and it’s a must-read!
Favorite Character/Quote: Callie. Her emotional trials when dealing with ghosts and all things paranormal called out to me. She’s gone through so much and by the end of the book, I wanted her to just be able to get a good night’s sleep.
I don't often gravitate to Romantic Suspense, but this novel was wonderful and I am very happy I didn't overlook it based on its genre. There is a strong supernatural element here; in fact, that is what drives the novel for me. However, fans of Romantic Suspense will also delight in THE HAUNTING OF HILLWOOD FARM because of the lovable characters, the romantic tension, the need for one of the main trio to "suspend disbelief" in order to acknowledge what is actually occurring and to get past his mistrust of the new entry into his and his grandmother's lives. Any fiction seems so much better when the reader can delve into the characters and find points of similarity and interest, and that is very much the case in this novel.
25-year-old Callie Sinclair gained psychic ability following a brief coma induced by a winter traffic accident. Now she "hears" from the deceased, whether or not she wishes to. But sometimes she can pass out information or guidance to a grieving loved one, and the results are beneficial. When she tries to help the elderly, recently widowed, Alice Turner, she finds more than one spirit to deal with, along with the skepticism and disbelief of Alice's very appealing grandson Luke. Romance, Supernatural, and Danger elements are all prevalent in this novel, in a champion plot.
73 yo Alice Turner is a recent widow currently living at Hillwood Farm with her grandson Luke.
Following an accident, Callie Sinclair has been left with the ability to communicate with “things beyond.” After several strange, unexplained occurrences at the farmhouse, Alice contacts Callie for her help. Initial skepticism will lessen as the incidents increase rapidly, leading to the final showdown / moment of truth.
* I was gifted this copy by @kathrynknightbooks. Thanks for this quick, easy, fun read!
* This is not my usual type of read - I do not intentionally read romance books . I told the author I would give it a try! It’s a thriller, suspense, paranormal, romance book - quite a mix! And just a hint of romance!
*I didn’t correctly identify the avenging spirit until almost the end! I incorrectly identified someone else! The author kept me curious throughout the story.
The premise of this story really appealed to me because I haven’t read any ghostly stories in a while. A little under 200 pages, I was keen to see how the writer could develop and conclude what could potentially be quite an intriguing story-line. However, I’m afraid that on this occasion, it didn’t really hit the mark.
The lack of development in the story-line was what really let me down. Whilst I appreciate a short story here and now, I feel that Knight could have taken this plot to a whole new level. Instead, I found it predictable and could see how the story would conclude. I had many other theories that would put this read into a tailspin but, alas, I believe that Knight played it safe and finished it in a manner suited to this short structure.
This is a spooky, paranormal story that builds on the idea of a ghost haunting Callie and Hillwood Farm. The way that Knight describes these incidents are quite chilling and I enjoyed these episodes. However, I do think more could have been added to really build on the scary atmosphere. The scenes do build in your imagination and, often reading this at nighttime, it did make me think twice about all the normal night time noises I hear in my house!
To lighten the mood, we also have the romantic story-line between Callie and Luke. This certainly lessened the tension and made the read feel like a romantic haunting, rather than a ghostly novel. However, both characters seem sweet and well suited to each other, even if I was hoping for a massive plot twist at the end.
Whilst I did enjoy the premise of this book, I wonder how much further Knight could have taken this. Definitely one to read on a cold, winter’s night, I believe that if you are after a truly ghostly story, there are better ones out there. Nonetheless, I do not regret reading this and am glad for the opportunity. This read is a light-hearted piece of entertainment and if you do not like reading truly scary stories, then maybe this is the book for you.
I received a free copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review.
The Haunting of Hillwood Farm by Kathryn Knight starts off with a strong opening, and is essentially a ghost story set on a haunted farm, complete with horses and dark, edgy vibes throughout the story. The story itself began with an opening chapter of a woman named Alice with a haunted kitchen, where a sugar jar moves by itself-and then explodes, causing her to call up a psychic that can hear ghosts speak-a gift that Callie never wanted. Arriving at the farm, more accidents and dangerous events unfold throughout both the farm, and her own place later on through the story. Ghosts, apparently, want her gone.
It’s thought that Alice’s husband, Henry, is the spirit causing the distress as he unexpectedly passed away. There was a lot of suspects throughout the story of who the ghost might be, some nice scenes with the horses, and a few clips of adventure where there’s a fire, a scattering of dangerous accidents, and even a romantic element thrown in with Alice’s grandson, Luke Turner. The three get together to buckle down, and solve the mystery…before someone else gets killed or hurt.
Overall, the writing was strong, and I quite liked all the characters. Everyone felt fully fleshed out and real, and I spent a solid three hours breezing through this story, as once you start, you don’t want to quit. I devoured the book in one sitting, and gave it 4.5 stars. I recommend it for those who enjoy a good ghost story during the summer, or even for Halloween, it would be a perfect read for that spooky atmosphere. The romance was also well handled, and I definitely find myself intrigued in checking out the author’s other works. This book was available through Kindle Unlimited, for those that wish to grab it for themselves, and I highly recommend it.
Kathryn Knight’s The Haunting of Hillwood Farm is a quick read involving the paranormal and a bit of romance for two characters who have recently experienced tragic and/or loathsome events in their personal lives. The protagonist, Callie, while recovering from an accident realizes that she now can hear ghosts. At least she thinks that is what is taking place. This ‘gift’ is new to Callie, and she is attempting to discover just what ‘it’ is. The recently widowed owner of Hillwood Farm ‘begs’ Callie to help her as odd happenings at her home have become so upsetting. Her grandson, 27 year old Luke, has moved to the farm to live and work the farm as well as keep his grandmother company and provide any protection she may need, and that includes anyone trying ‘con’ his grandmother. Enter Callie, a ‘new’ 25 year of psychic who arrives to help Luke’s grandmother, but Luke is a skeptic who thinks Callie is just after money. Will Callie help Alice? Will Luke stop what he considers nonsense? What is happening at Hillwood Farm? This read is just what I needed to lighten my reading outlook. 3.25 stars. I just reread this for fun! 3.75 stars.
It was an ok read but didn’t find it scary at all. The romance story line was irritating and I would have liked more ghostly happenings. The book was too short and suddenly finished.
The story is exactly what the title says. There’s a malevolent spirit haunting Hillwood Farm and Callie who can sense, see and talk to ghosts has been called into help by Alice. The story doesn’t linger anywhere, there’s not much diversion as the reader is given a straight away menace into the ghost’s wild attacks. There’s also the romance that grows between Luke, the grandson of Alice and Callie who has her own emotional baggage to worry about.
This is quite an easy read for a couple of hours which I think would be considered as a plus or minus depending on the reader. On one hand, the straight story telling makes it fast paced which is good if that’s what one is looking for but on the other hand, there were places that would have benefited well by a little more detail added to it. I loved the story coz it suited me perfectly but some readers may feel a lack of depth, especially in the dynamics of the vengeful spirit with respect to the relationship to the Turner family.
The horror element of it is comparatively mild as the atmospheric menace is kept to the minimum.
In all an interesting paranormal romance story and exactly what I was looking for!
Great ghost story/romance! Really enjoyed the mystery and love story, but my favorite parts were the scary ones. It might've been a mistake to listen to this as I drifted off to sleep. A few times I got nervous I'd open my eyes to see a figure at the end of the bed or feel something grab my foot, haha.
This book was SO good.. until the last couple of chapters. The plot twist was not what I was expecting and a little underwhelming. HOWEVER, still very well written and the twist did make sense. The overall vibe of the book was creepy which I really enjoyed as it’s hard to creep me out or scare me these days. Honestly I’d give this a 3.5 stars but good ole Goodreads and no half star ratings.
Wow! This is the ultimate page turner! The very first scene grabs you and never lets go to the very satisfying conclusion. I will highly recommend to my patrons looking for steamy romance with down right creepy scares!
What makes this writing stand out from other paranormal romance novels is the genuine fear. So often they are mildly scary where as this ghost is legitimately creepy.
Knight excels at writing about sense of place. You can picture, feel and smell your surroundings. Hillwood Farm is a real place in my mind after reading her book. Her characters are well rounded, genuine characters. They have flaws and quirks that you are intrigued by.
The romance elements were hot and seemed realistic. So often, paranormal romance can seem forced or rushed to fit in the time frame of the story but not in this case.
I highly enjoyed this book and will recommend to my readers. This is the first I’ve heard of Kathryn Knight but I’m certainly going to look for more.
There seems to be a haunting at the Hillwood farm, but maybe there are two hauntings? No one knows why there a mean one or violent ghost? Alice is be attacked but also be helped by her husband Henry? It gets so bad that Callie is called in to help?
Luke seem to no want to believe that there are ghosts? You will be surprised as the event continue to happen when Luke and Callie are together and when they are apart? One is trying to get warn and one is about danger?
We get everything the author wants in a story. We get hauntings and the paranormal effect and along with it we get a romance that blooms. Whether this is the author intent or not, does not matter as it seem to just happen.
The plot is done well. I loved it. It one that got my attention as I was reading. I wanted to know who the ghosts were. Especially the one that was haunting the Turners and Callie? This is answered at the end. The reason for two ghost and who was who is revealed. One was protecting and the was hurtful? We find out why it happen as well. If you are into hauntings or ghosts or even paranormal aspect in the book this one is good.
Callie has the gift of communicating with ghosts though it's not something she advertises. But when Alice Turner calls her out to their farm, she agrees. The things that are moving on their own are not the only suspicious things, but Alice isn't ready to tell her grandson Luke about them just yet, he's too much of a skeptic, and he's not going to be happy that Callie is poking around the farm. But when things start to get worse, they realize that it's not just Alice's deceased husband who is responsible, so they must tell Luke the truth, and figure out what is going on before someone gets seriously hurt.
This story had a mix of a lot of elements, the haunting, the budding romance between Luke and Callie, and the mystery element of what is at play here. This was a relatively short, easy read that's well-written with an engaging storyline. I liked the mystery element of not knowing who is messing with their lives, and I like the fact that the haunting didn't stick to just the farm. I liked Callie's honesty, the fact that she wasn't in this for the money, and that she was outspoken when it came to dealing with Luke. Overall, a fun and enjoyable read.
Insta love between seriously boring and annoying Luke ( Callie is the most beautiful, smartest, and funniest girl he has ever met, really? Dude you’ve known her for like five minutes ), and Callie who’s life is like a country song ( dad has early Alzheimer’s, mom died, BF died, and she has no family or friends ). The story was boring, the culmination of events came super fast, and everything was resolved in a rush.
After tragedy strikes, Callie Sinclair is left with a gift she never wanted—the ability to communicate with ghosts. But when a desperate widow begs for her help, she reluctantly agrees to investigate the strange occurrences at Hillwood Farm. She quickly realizes she’s dealing with a dangerous presence beyond anything she’s ever experienced, and something else becomes equally clear—the only other living person in the house, Mrs. Turner’s handsome grandson, thinks she’s a scam artist. While she’d prefer to just ignore him, her heart beats a little faster every time he’s nearby.
Luke Turner doesn’t believe in spirits. He’s moved back to restore the family farm, but living on the property serves a dual purpose—he can watch out for his grandmother. He’s not happy about the sudden appearance of a self-described psychic, or his inexplicable attraction to her. His initial suspicions crumble as evidence points to an actual haunting, but he’s still determined not to fall for Callie—the past has taught him it’s best to avoid relationships.
As Callie is drawn deeper into the mystery, she becomes the target of a vengeful spirit, and Luke can no longer fight his feelings for her. Unable to resist their desire, passion ignites…even as the paranormal activity escalates to a final deadly confrontation.
My thoughts :
Would I recommend it : yes
Would I read anything else by this authour ?yes
A paranormal - suspense Romance , that has everything in it you would want , a ghost that's bent on revenge, a slight touch of romance that slowly builds , and a ghost that's there to help ,but which one can you trust and which one shouldn't be trusted , and loveable characters that make you feel even more in love with them. As for the story its self not once did I want to put it , with that said I want to thank Netgalley for letting me read and review it exchange for my honest opinion.
I received this audiobook free as part of a blogtour. This did not influence my review in any way.
I loved this lovely sweet romance. Callie is a wonderful young woman that suddenly find she can speak to ghosts. In the beginning it was a big shock, but then she is invited to help someone who has a ghost problem.
Then Luke happened. He is everything a woman can ask for in a man, and then some. But he thinks she is conning his grandma. Before she knows what is happening, the ghost starts targeting her.
Can she figure out what is happening before it is too late?
Callie is super sweet, despite her difficult past. She's also wise beyond her years. I like all the characters in this book, except Luke's mom and the evil ghost lady. But then that was the point, wasn't it? Every book needs a villain or two.
If you love cozy mysteries and romance, I recommend this story to you. Kathryn Knight did a really good job at writing this tale, and Kristin James' reading was expertly done. Her voice suited this story perfectly and I could listen to a few more done by her.
THE HAUNTING OF HILLWOOD FARM is a fast-paced Paranormal Romance with a strong sense of suspense! Callie has the ability to hear, and sometimes see, ghosts. This ability came about in tragic circumstances, and as such, she has not permitted herself to get close to anyone since. This is a moot point once she meets Alice, and her skeptical grandson, Luke.
The relationship takes time, which was nice to read. They didn't just jump straight into bed with each other, and Callie was resistant to even moving to the farm with Alice and Luke for her own safety. The identity of the ghost was fairly obvious but it still made for fascinating reading, to find out all the twists and turns that made up the story.
This story was very well-written, with no editing or grammatical errors that I noticed. The characters are all well-rounded, and Alice is going to be a reader's favourite, I'm sure.
A thoroughly enjoyable story, with suspense and romance, and plenty of paranormal activity.
This story is spooky, suspenseful, and with a twist of romance to keep a reader engrossed in the book.
I loved this book! The mystery kept me engaged while trying to figure out who the ghost was and why were they haunting the farm. I did figure it out before the reveal at the end, but it was by chance. I think I picked up on a few clues that might have been obscure but stood out in my mind. I won't tell you what they are because you need to read the book yourself and figure it out. I will say that there were a few twists that I wasn't expecting when everything was revealed.
I really enjoyed Callie's character. She has had a tough life, but she keeps rolling with the punches. I wonder if an accident that took her boyfriend's life is what opened her mind to be able to communicate with ghosts. Anything is possible. Luke is the skeptical grandson, but there is an attraction between these two that will not be denied. The romance between these two is clean, and most of it is "behind closed doors," which was fine with me because detailed scenes weren't needed.
The haunting scenes are descriptive and made me a little nervous. I know I don't have ghosts around my house, but it made me wonder what might happen if I did.
This was the first book I have read by this author, but it won't be the last. We give this book 5 paws up.
In The Haunting of Hillwood, Callie, an unlikely medium, is asked by Mrs. Turner to investigate a ghost on her farm. The ghost has some violent tendencies and once Callie shows up, the ghost seems to set its sights on her. Finally, I have found a book with some great spooky scenes in it. This was a lot of fun to listen to. It's a quick audiobook, so I won't give away any of the plot. I will say that there was one scene that had me on the edge of my seat and kind of freaked me out. This book would actually, if done right, make for a great horror movie. There is also a nice romance added into the mix. I enjoyed the characters and the twist in the end. The audiobook was done very well. I enjoyed the narrator's voices and the way she was able to draw me into the story. I definitely recommend giving this one a try!
The Haunting of Hillwood Farm was a thrilling page-turner and I was hooked from beginning to end. This novel had the right mix of romance, friendship, disbelief, mystery and scare factor. The story was my first Kathryn Knight novel and I enjoyed it immensely. The haunting wasn't really scary just a bit chilling at times, but it did keep me at the edge of my seat and I enjoyed the romance between the two characters in the story. I really enjoyed this novel and I would highly recommend it to all lovers of romantic thrillers. The audible version was narrated by Kristin James. Her voice perfectly suited to this role and she did a fantastic job with the characters especially the ghost. Her timing and delivery was spot on and I enjoyed listening to her narrate this novel.
Kathryn Kight was a new to me author a month ago, however, in that month she has quickly grown into one of my favorite authors. The Haunting of Hillwood Farm is a fantastic story that will keeping you needing to know more. You will want to know who is causing the havoc and what they are going to do next. You will fall in love with the relatable and realistic characters and have a few great laughs with them as well. I had the pleasure of listening to this book on audio and the Narrator of this story is one of the best I have ever listened to. I hope you will enjoy this 5 star story as much as I did!
This is a great, light read for a rainy day or to take on a flight with you. There’s a bit of romance, mystery, and supernatural suspense that will easily keep you engaged.
It’s also a quick read!
By no means is it ground breaking and it’s length means that the relationship developed rather quickly. Is it ground breaking? No. Did I enjoy it? Yes.
From the first page of The Haunting of Hillwood Farm I was instantaneously drawn in. Not just by the story, but by how Kathryn structures her sentences. They are written so sophisticatedly and in a fashion that really helps the reader have a true understanding of the actions and/or thoughts on the page. The story kept you guessing and your heart racing while keeping the action intense and the romance at a comfortable fade to black level. Greatly appreciated as someone who is not exactly a romance fan. It also came with a wicked plot twist I definitely didn't see coming. Definitely plan on reading more from this author!!
This is the first book I've read by this author and I was blown away! I read it one sitting and then turned around and listened to the audiobook. Both were excellent and attention grabbing. A spectacular story with just the right amount of ghost, romance and mystery, it started off with a bang and kept that pacing the entire story.
Callie is a young woman who, after a tragic accident, now has the ability to speak to ghosts. She is contracted by the recent widow of Hillwood Farm to help speak to her late husband. Add in a skeptical grandson and jilted lover and you have a great ghost story.
