Knights of Obsidian

Rate this book
It’s been a rough couple of days for twenty-two-year-old Madeline Bennet, the newest (and most reluctant) member of Gray’s renowned team of knight marshals. Not only did her shadow creatures create a forest fire that’s burning down western Colorado, but she has no idea where to find the thresholds so she can send the beasts back to the land from which they came. (Or even how to open them.)

On top of that, her parents have figured out something is amiss with her magic, Rafe has taken off on a wild pixie chase, and the status of her relationship with a certain too-hot-to-handle member of her team is firmly seated in the region of “it’s complicated.”

What Madeline needs is a good, old-fashioned vacation, even if it comes in the form of a job. With her hairless cat in tow, she heads to Las Vegas with the guys, desperately hoping the shadow creatures will stay in hiding long enough for her sort through her feelings, find answers to her questions about her Obsidian magic, and catch a magic-thieving criminal prowling the largest fashion convention of the year.

If she gets a chance to buy a few pairs of heels to replace the ones that went up in smoke, that would be all right too.

This is a series that I have been wanting more of since finishing the first book. I'm now on book three and I still want more. It's really hard to wait. There isn't much resolution in each book but the characters are growing and changing as they encounter each new circumstance and adventure. There is a whole cast of entertaining characters in this series that I feel as though I know. They are distinct, vibrant and so much fun.

I love the great forward momentum in this book. The action and mystery is perfectly balanced with dialogue and romance. It makes for such a great combination- one I have a hard time putting down or getting enough of. I am now in the same position I was before I started this book. Waiting for more. And not very patiently.

This is a YA/NA paranormal/adventure series. It really should be read in order. This book and series is on Kindle Unlimited if you have that. Happy reading!

Content: peril, mild violence, death, kissing, mild innuendo

REREAD:

i lied. i like someone the most and my heart will literally break if they don’t end up together and i have a feeling they won’t because she loves him but she doesn’t love him ... you know?

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review

AGH GUYS I JUST READ ALL THREE BOOKS.

so ... here are some thoughts.

> this third book was the perfect next instalment to an amazing first two books

> this book was a wild ride that went how many ways and ended with a stiletto stabbed ... and i will not spoil that part *nervous laughter*

> it leaves you satisfied but wanting more

> i love love love the characters so much. madeline’s voice and her personality is adorable. she has her faults. i actually didn’t know if i was going to like her when i started reading it. but i do. and i adore the boys. all of them.

> i am so excited to see where the ‘bigger plot’ is going !!!! i love the smaller mysteries of each book but this one really established the direction we’re headed. and i honestly can’t wait until august when the next book releases.

> like ... can we talk about charles for a second?

> i almost feel like shannon took the blonde, clueless, damsel-in-distress stereotype and turned it into a strong, badass, slightly clueless, stiletto-wielding chick.

> bedazzled. taser.

> the swapping of love interests bugged me a lot in the first book ... but honestly, this author doesn’t make it ... cliche and weird. she makes it human. ((if that makes sense ??))

> i am slightly heartbroken and entirely okay with it but i am SO NOT OKAY WITH IT and i am almost just as confused as madeline. maddie. lexie. princess.

i do recommend this series for lovers of humour, a bit of mystery, a dollop if magic, amazing chemistry, sorta-clean romance, spotless language, and a fun paranormal adventures with a sassy heroine.

seriously.

i can’t wait for the next one.

Argh - how am I supposed to wait until August for the next book?

Seriously, this series has been awesome - funny, flirty, suspenseful, exciting! I'm so torn between being eager to see how it ends and not wanting it to ever end, lol

I absolutely recommend starting this series from the beginning. There's reminders of some previous events within the story but not an extensive recap - honestly, even if the author did recap, I think readers would be missing too much to fully appreciate the story in the same way.

This 3rd book starts out a little slow-ish, but gradually picks up momentum, increasing until the dramatic, climactic end. It has a resolved ending, so no cliffhanger worries, but it clues us in to where the next story is going & then ends a bit abruptly. Don't worry though - it still succeeds in being a satisfying ending while making you eager for the next.

Clean romance level: passionate kissing, with a fair amount of frustrated desire that while not graphic is at a warmth level not appropriate for younger readers

Ok, I seriously love this series! I’ve been anxiously waiting for the third book to come out and it so did not disappoint. Once I started it, I could not put it down. It had everything I love...entertainment, mystery, humor, tons of chemistry, and such fun characters. I love being in Madeline’s head...she is so funny. I’m constantly laughing or smiling over things that she thinks or says. Then there’s Jonathan...*swoon*...I haven’t decided how I feel about Rafe yet, and then there’s Gray, who honestly I like him but I’m over him, and finally there’s Eric...how can you not like Eric? He’s also a favorite of mine.
I am not sure how many books this author plans to write for this series but I do know there will at least be a 4th book coming out soon and I can’t wait!
This book (and series) has magic, action, some dark creatures, guns, and romance but it all stays at a clean level. If this were a tv show, (it would make an awesome show, by the way) it would probably be rated as PG-13.
The series is written by one of my very favorite authors, Shari L. Tapscott, but she goes by a different name in this genre. If you have enjoyed any of her other books, you will probably love these, too. So fun!

I love every single thing about this series!

I love this book! LOOVE it! This author has tapped into exactly the kind of writing I like. Hot guys around every corner, a protagonist that is torn between several of them, and magic, snark, danger, flirting, links, mind reading, and sensational make-out scenes. My heart even broke. And I laughed a lot. I love how this series is about Madeline stuck on a team of guys that have all these powers. And I love that the factions have animal names and sometimes they refer to each other by the animal names. Every time someone calls Eric a Bunny, I die. It’s so funny. And Jonathan. What can I say. I love him to pieces. Pieces! But Rafe, there’s a magnetic pull to him that I like. And I still like the Wolf. I’m not sure who I am rooting for to finally be the Obsidian Queen’s king. It might just be Gray. I have no idea why. But Jonathan . . . I might just cry if I think about how much I love him. What else can I say? This is currently my favorite series.

Reader Rated for ages 14+ for mild sensuality and mild violence.

This was a fun read, and I was happy to be back in Madeline’s world, but this was the slowest book of the three for me. Perhaps it’s because I don’t particularly care for either Vegas or high fashion. But mostly I think it was due to the angsty “We have feelings for each other but can’t be together” vibe between Madeline and Jonathan. I love Jonathan, and he seems like a perfect match for our high-heeled heroine. I don’t know what it is about Rafe, but I just don’t like him. At least not for Madeline. I will say, I did enjoy the little development between the two, and what their connection allows them to do when they’re on the phone. Kinda cool! Also, a bit freaky.

I also felt like there wasn’t a ton of action in this one compared to the last two. I would’ve preferred more of that over the myriad mentions of cosmetics and couture. I’m still very much invested in the series, and look forward to the next book. I just hope Jonathan continues to be central to Madeline’s world.

More makeouts then I'd like.

Content: I'd rate it PG-13 passionate kissing and oogling. The author has promised no sex or non married fade to black scene so I've read reassured this series won't get naughty, but it does push the line in what I prefer to read in romantic intimacy. There is a lot of steam and I wouldn't recommend it to a younger audience.

Madeline is a character that I didn't think I'd like but she definitely grows on you, and I do feel emotionally invested in her and want to continue on her journey. There will be 5-6 books in Obsidian series, and I'll probably finish them all.

As for the love triangle I'm very satisfied how that seems to be resolving. No spoilers here

I like Shannon Lynn Cook's Shari L Tappscott books better. But did enjoy this story. It's fun.

2.8 Burnt Porsches out of 5.

I'd say I feel bad for Madeline, but she's been making poor choices since the beginning.

Book 1 is still by far the best of this series. I miss it.

I can deal with Madeline ditching Gray even though I don't think he was that bad.
I grinned-and-beared it when the author forced the relationship with Jonathan in Book 2.
But then she has the audacity to keep stringing along Rafe and Jonathan for this book as well?

I still find the characters likable which is why I keep reading and there are some good zingers. But I'm really tired of Madeline CONSISTENTLY making bad relationship choices. And that's all this story seems to be. Sure, there's the thread about opening portals and being Obsidian Queen, but we never get to go deeper into that.

I don't know if I can take that much more of Madeline's stupidity in the next book.

Can't wait for the next one!

I have absolutely loved this series so far! I've basically binge-read the first three books. The characters and their dynamics are great. At first I was a little leery when I first started reading about all the love triangles and love interests, but I actually thought it was well done. And honestly, it's easy to love all the people! I often find myself annoyed with the MC where there are several love interests and all the drama, but I actually really love Madeline. She's a great MC. And the author does a good job of not making it obvious which love interest Madeline is going to end up with, so that's fun--even though it really makes me crave reading the next book! I'm excited to see where it goes!

Fun author who writes great characters

I mean who couldn’t love a book that starts with “It’s all fun and games until your evil minions burn down the forest.”? I wasn’t sure if this genre was going to be for me, but I’m finding so far I love everything I’ve read from this author. She manages tension and turmoil in her characters without resorting to vulgar language and her character development shows the reader both their strengths and vulnerabilities. I can’t wait for the next in this series!

Whyyyyyyyyyyy? It ENDED. I wanted to know what happened next immediately and I couldn't. That makes me very sad.

Griping aside...fun book, as per usual. I feel very sorry for two character I shall not name, and somewhat less sorry for another one . The action and mild dose of mystery were engaging. I will most definitely be getting the next one the day it comes out, I've finished almost all these books in a sitting.

Argh, I’ve finished the book and now have to wait a few months for the next in the series. *sigh* I almost wished I’d savored the book a bit more.

Anyways- I definitely don’t consider this a standalone book. You really need to read the previous books before this one.

I’m happy to say that I will definitely be reading the next in the series.

I’m still kind of wondering if she’s going to end up with any of the hot men on her team. I know I’d have a hard time choosing between all that awesome candy.

Knights of Obsidian is the third book in the obsidian Queen series. It takes place at a fashion expo in Vegas someone is syphoning magic and leaving people for dead and it’s up to the team to find out who.

Ahh! My heart! The push and pull between these characters is driving me nuts! I am completely engrossed and committed to Johnathan and Madeline and yet there is Rafe distancing himself and yet it’s not enough. Madeline and Rafe learn new elements to their link in this book which brings confusion and heartache.

Guys, I’m actually a little embarrassed of how obsessed I am in these books 😂 I feel so connected with the characters and am seriously emotionally attached to each one. Shannon Cook is an absolutely brilliant author. Even if urban fantasy isn’t your normal genre, you need to give these books a shot. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

So many emotions

Loving this series, can’t wait to see what comes from the last book. So many answers I want, think I’ll keep reading to the next one. I really liked the emotional journey on this book, so hard to find a solution for everyone. Hope Maddie and Johnson can work it out in the next book.

I need MORE!!

This series is seriously addicting! Each book just pulls you in and I can’t seem to stop. The hardest part is the crazy love triangle (which I usually abhor) but I can’t seem to help loving it in this series. There is danger, action, evil and good magic wielders, forbidden love, and more. I end each book just drooling for the next one- I need MORE!!

If you love YA fantasy and magical worlds, this series definitely is for you! Every time, I get hooked to the story in less time than you can tell! It's sexy, it's magic, there's danger and romance. And it's always too short!

Great Series

I really like the continued developments in this series, as there is never a dull moment. I just wish the back and forth of the love triangle were a bit less repetitive.

Love it.

I absolutely love this author’s books. All of them. They are fast paced, and I never get bored halfway through. Plus, they are edited virtually perfectly. I highly recommend her for her humor and interesting writing style.

Madeline keeps having a eventful life

A fun read with a good mystery and romance to go with it. The team has another mission and Madeline and the team are trying to figure out the mission and her life.

Another great urban fantasy romance

In Knights of Obsidian, the angst and romance dominate, but the plot is great too. Can’t recommend this clean, romantic urban fantasy enough!
