The Coldwater Haunting

Rate this book
An isolated house. Ghosts in the windows. Something climbing the stairs.
Ron lands the home of his dreams, isolated on a rural mountain, away from the noise and crowds of the city. With the house in need of repairs, he works on fixing it up before his wife and son join him. Unfortunately, the more he repairs, the more problems he uncovers.

During the day, he works on the mundane: septic system, plumbing, electrical wiring. But when the night comes and a deep darkness settles on the lonely property, a whole new set of troubles develop: scratching at the windows, the sound of footsteps on the stairs, shadowy figures in the yard. Threats. Attacks.

Ron comes to realize the house is unsafe — not because of the physical problems, but because of the unseen. He needs to rid the building of whatever evil has taken hold, but there’s one huge obstacle: he doesn’t believe in ghosts. He’s a total skeptic.
His friend Jake helps with the repairs. Jake is more willing to accept that the nightmarish apparitions in the house are real, and his girlfriend Freedom attempts to cleanse the house. Her methods backfire, so she leaves, frightened, refusing to return to the house. She demands Jake leave too, but Ron convinces Jake not to abandon him.

Desperate to solve the haunting, Jake ropes in others who claim to have “the gift,” but they all fail, unable to confront and outwit the evil inside the house. While Ron and Jake try to uncover the mystery, they go on a frightening journey, eventually coming to terms with the mountain’s troubled history. An ugly, brutal war waged between two families still consumes the area, and Ron’s house is caught in the middle of it.

The Coldwater Haunting is a ghost novel of over 100,000 words. It contains chilling scenes some may find disturbing. Advance readers report the book interfering with their dreams…

“Extremely creepy!”

“Kept me on edge…no way to escape it.”

They Walk at Night Searching for You
Eventually They Will Find You...

4 stars. Ron Costa has found the perfect house. There's no one around on 20 acres of woods...

The nearest neighbor is down a twisty dirt road about a quarter mile. The house itself is massive with lots of rooms and a grand staircase...

All sitting on an isolated clearing in the woods. The only problem is that Ron has to make the house habitable...

Oh, and get rid of a few ghosts...

Ron's wife Elenore hates the house on sight and promptly takes a business trip, leaving Ron to deal with it alone...

Their son Robbie is staying with his grandmother until he finishes school...

So...

Ron enlists the help of his best friend Jake because Ron is not very handy with fix-it jobs, but Jake is the man good with the tools...

The projects get underway, and the two men have no problems getting to it during the day...

But...
Nighttime is a different story...

Nights begin with a thump! Footsteps going up and down the stairs. Faces looking in windows and fingernails...

Scratching to get in...

Huge houses have lots of opportunities to have weird things going on in some corner...

Somewhere...

The turning point for Ron and Jake is when Ron meets one of the ghosts one night, who tells him...

I am Ezra. You have heard the others at night, I expect. Walking up the stairs. You can hear the thumps of their footsteps as you try to sleep...

They walk every night searching for you. Eventually, they will find you...

This was a very spooky, yet hilarious story of two Tim Taylor/Al Borland (Home Improvement) type men trying to restore an old house while ridding the place of ghosts. It was very entertaining and I was sorry to see it end.

I removed a star because it needed better proofing, but only a little.

This novel is similar to MAYNARDS HOUSE by Herman Raucher and HOMEBODY by Orson Scott Card. Both are excellent haunted house stories.

Atmospheric Haunting!

Small backstory:

Ron Costa buys a home out in the middle of nowhere that needs quite a bit of fixing up. He wants to get it repaired and ready for his wife and son to move into it, but he is not prepared for the place to have house guests already. Ron isn't there long when some ghostly activity starts making its presence known but Ron is a big skeptic when it comes to hauntings as he just doesn't believe in spooks!

When Ron asks his friend Jake to come and help him get the house repaired, Jake finds out quick that Ron's home has ghosts but when Jake invites his girlfriend, Freedom (who dabbles in the paranormal) over to check out the house things go from bad to worse as the ghosts become more active to the point that Ron and Jake have to seek out professional help to be able to come to terms with what is haunting the house!

That is about all I can give on a small backstory so if that has piqued your interest then go read this book!

Thoughts:

This book grabbed me right away when I first started reading it as the ghostly activity starts not too long after Ron arrives at the house and starts tinkering around with it. By the time the character, Jake arrives on the scene, the story has picked up some pace, but the story does fluctuate a little bit on pacing as it slows down in spots then picks back up in other spots.

Once I was able to get past the 55% mark the story blows wide open and the pace picks up faster. By the time I made it to the 70% mark I could barely put down the book as the ghost activity goes full throttle which kept me reading the book late into the night and not wanting to put it down to go to sleep!

I have read a couple of books by this author in the past and loved them so I wanted to get back to reading his work as he does know how to write spooky ghost stories! Really happy that I read this book and kept my ghost meter running at a high rate of speed! Giving this book five "Spooky Suspenseful" stars!

A haunting with a unique twist as far as ghosts go.
I would have high tailed it out of there but I am of sound mind.

Ron buys a secluded house in the woods and falls in love with it.
His wife is not at all enamored.
His son, none the wiser.
These two don't really matter anyway.

The plumbing is a major concern, something to do with the well/septic tank can't say I really understood all that business, but enough of it.
Then there's the electrical that's all punky.
Ron's money pit is costing him bank.
Add in the creepy finger tapping of the upstairs bedroom window in the dark of night, footsteps ascending the stairs in the dark of night, and those misty ghostly apparitions in his yard in the dark of night.
I would say Ron, you got yourself a haunting.
Did I mention the sinister history of the area in which this house sits?

His friend Jake comes to help but only during the day because, well, damn things haunted! But only at the dark of night.
Jake decides to bring in a haunted tour guide/ (paranormal specialist?) and that guide/specialist brings in a superior paranormal specialist and a type of exorcism is to take place, and Ron does it half assed but maybe it works, I don't know because I got confused because he didn't follow all the steps and then the first guide/paranormal specialist guy forgot to do something in the first place and oh, jeez I obviously missed something because some of this just didn't make sense to me.

Also a lesser page count would have worked better for me here since there was a lot of rehashing of occurrences.
I got dizzy from the loop.

Now, it's not that I didn't care for this story. It was okay. I just wanted to be unburdened by what has burdened me. Besides the play by play of things that are and have been it just got muddled with a few of the details that I thought pivotal to the story haunts and that just left me saying, huh.

I’ve mostly enjoyed Michael Richan’s books, his Downwinders series being my favourite. However for some reason I just couldn’t get behind this book.

Basic story starts out as man buys old house, old house seems haunted. Not the most groundbreaking or earth shattering plot. I’ve ready plenty of books that start with this set up, but this time it just felt too forced. I struggled to suspend my disbelief, which is not a problem I usually have.

Part of me thinks Richan needs a break with all “The River” stuff, and try his hand at a completely different spin on the paranormal. It’s a shame as a I have another book of his waiting to be read on my kindle, but honestly I really don’t feel like picking it up, maybe we need to go on a break.

I cannot praise this book enough! Coffee is definitely a common thread woven through the River universe. Could it be that the river is made of coffee?
I like the kind of slow start up, how it started seemingly innocuous, like the worst nightmares were going to be the money pit Ron sunk himself into.

 Then around 3 am, perfection.

Not super in your face, oh face! In chapter 4 when he's inspecting the house and the camera isn't following him, and he looks up and there is a face in the window. I got some goose flesh on my arms.
Terrell and Abe's cameos were a surprisingly nice change from the usual. Good way to keep me on my toes and not assume who will make an appearance. Though I do believe Roy got in there, well his female counterpart, in Mrs. Hughes. I'm glad that she and Ron have seemed to form a tentative friendship.
When Ron and Jake are at the Coldwater Mansion, the parts outside and on the first floor, before things got really going. Made me laugh so much, I was picturing, a scene similar to something you'd see in an Abbott and Costello movie. It was perfect for a little levity before the prize fight in the end.
I'm glad he Ron was able to fix things so it would be safe for his son to live in the house. Sounds idyllic and wonderful.
Overall another great book from Michael Richan. His characters are always well written, his locations immersive. He has a talent for making you care about the people and places he writes about.

I'm with the wife--I wouldn't live there either!

The Coldwater Haunting was a well-written book and a scary, suspenseful read. The author took the "renovating a new home in the country ghost story" and gave it a few tweaks and twists, but didn't abandon the necessity of grounding the story in solid parapsychology and arcane lore.

As well as having originality, it always makes a story more enjoyable when you can settle comfortably into it for the journey, knowing that the stuff you hope will terrify you is at least somewhat believable. It's also essential that the characters are the kind of people you come to care about what happens to them.

The author has amply delivered on all three of these requirements! I already have Slaughter, Idaho, another stand-alone novel that's connected to The River series, cued up on my Kindle.

Great ghost story

I gave 4 stars because I can't stand taking the Lord's name in vain. I feel like the great number of people it offends isn't worth it..in books, TV, life. The story itself is unlike most haunted fiction. The author created a much deeper story than most bother to do. Even tho that deeper story got weird I appreciate the extra effort and the story itself it great. I liked the bromance. The 2 main characters brought a lot to the story..humor, the feeling of safety in numbers, a fun argument between the sceptic and the believer. The author somehow pulled 2 nightmares straight out of my head. Reading them was horrifying and fun as hell (for the author- the feet thing and the extended jaw thing). I'm looking forward to seeing what else there is out there from this author.

An excellent read!!

This story was breathtakingly, exquisitely scary! The plot winds and twists along a a fast clip, it's hard to stop reading once it grips you from the beginning. The characters are so Well formed you love of hate them, feel for them, the dead and the living! Their are many strengths to this book. The characters and their journey, as mentioned.. But also the setting and atmosphere! You can feel it almost. And the greatest strength is the writer, who is very good at his craft!! You won't go wrong hete, if love a good scare. I must find more.

Intensely scary!

I love the River series and the DownWinder series, so I had to read this one by Michael. I was drawn in from the beginning and led through a haunting that makes you think twice about buying an old house. The characters were written with purpose and each bringing something to the table the story needed. Terrell was even included from the River series. If you are a paranormal fan, you won't be disappointed.

I enjoyed reading this book. I loved the mystery and paranormal suspense. My only criticism is that ir would drag a little in some places, such as conversations with Terrell, Abe and Mrs. Hughes. They could have been condensed, some of the details of the surroundings, etc., could have been left out. The ending left some unanswered questions, but I am assuming the author did that with a sequel in mind.

Good haunted house story

Right from the first page I was hooked, the story flows well.Although there was no way I would have stayed in that house I don’t know how he was able to sleep there!Pretty darn scary,I would have liked a bit more story on the Coldwells why was the father so evil what happened to the mother and daughter that was never explained.

Loved it

Really loved this book, however the ending was disappointing, it left a lot unresolved and seemed as if the author just became tired of writing and quickly ended it. Overall though, the book drew me in and the story telling was great, even creeped me out more then once, I just wish the ending answered more questions. Would however read this author again in a heartbeat!

Disappointed

I was really looking forward to reading but every page the author has to use the f word. It just spoiled it for me. There was no need. Certainly didn't enhance the story so I just stopped reading it. Looks like it would have otherwise been pretty good. Guess I'll never know.

Wow! Once I started it I couldn't put it down!!

What a phenomenal ghost story!! The story
line was brilliant and absolutely riveting. There
we're a lot of twists and turns that it caught
and held my attention throughout the entire
book. Also, to my way of thinking it left room
for a sequel. This is an author I will definitely
keep reading.

Great Ghost Story!

I have read all of Michael Richan’s books and really enjoy them. This new book is a fantastic. New characters in a great adventure. I’m so glad we still have authors who know how to write a scary book without it being like a slasher movie. Loved this book.

Suspenseful read

No spoiler alert needed. The book delves into the psyche of dealing with stresses we never knew exsisted. The characters are very good and the depth of the authors descriptions will bring you right in there with them.
I could see a sequel to this book. Enjoyed the authors style, it was my first read of any of their books.

Couldn't put it down

This book had some genuine scares in it. It was also unique--still what you're looking for in a haunted house story but with a new take I enjoyed. I will definitely be reading more from this author.

I don't think this book is five star ready. It is all over the place with little to no horror. The most annoying thing is the fact that Ron is so thick headed that i wanted him to die. Definitely not a book for me.

Plot delayed

I didn't get to see what was really happening until I got a little past the middle. Was very hard to understand up to that point. Still kinda don't understand it even toward the end but it was still an ok read.

Great Story

Love the paranormal and this book delivers. The editing is close to perfect. Good character development. The ending was good, not sure if there will be any sequal, if there were a series, I'd read it.
