No longer available from publisher. No longer available from publisher. The world overflows with information, data and knowledge. But you find precious little wisdom. Wisdom is what you desperately need when faced with a challenge at work, a problem at home, a conflict with friends or a crisis within yourself. To answer questions like these, you want wisdom--sound advice from someone you respect, someone who knows how to succeed and how to deal with failure, someone who sees clearly the consequences of different courses of action. That's what pastor Bill Hybels has found in the book of Proverbs, and that's what he offers his congregation and now you. Here is advice that has been tested for centuries and found true about how to put God's wisdom into action in your life. If you feel that there's nothing so rare as common sense, this book is for you!
Bill Hybels is the founding and senior pastor of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Illinois, a non-denominational church with eight regional locations in the Chicago area. He is the bestselling author of more than twenty books, including Simplify, Axiom, Holy Discontent, Just Walk Across the Room, The Volunteer Revolution, Courageous Leadership, Too Busy Not to Pray, and Becoming a Contagious Christian.
Hybels launched Willow Creek Community Church in 1975 with his wife, Lynne (Berry), and a group of friends who gathered in rented space in a movie theater with a vision of helping people from any faith background (or no faith at all) become fully devoted followers of Jesus. Utilizing contemporary music, the arts, relevant teaching from the Bible, and a small-groups community focus that has revolutionized how people experience community in the local church, Willow Creek has grown to more than 25,000 attendees, one of the largest churches in North America—and one of the most influential.
In 1992, Hybels launched Willow Creek Association, a not-for-profit organization that equips, inspires, and empowers leaders around the world. In 1995, he convened WCA’s first Global Leadership Summit, an annual two-day event featuring top leaders from all perspectives and areas of expertise—both faith-based and secular (past speakers include Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, Bono, Melinda Gates, Andy Stanley, Jim Collins, Ed Catmull, Tyler Perry, Sheryl Sandberg, Nicholas Kristof, David Gergen, and Brené Brown). Telecast live from Willow Creek’s 7,000-seat South Barrington auditorium each August, more than 400,000 pastors and community leaders attend the Summit at hundreds of locations across North America, and around the world at 675+ sites in 130 countries and 60 different languages—making it the largest event of its kind on the planet. “Everyone wins when a leader gets better,” Hybels says.
Hybels holds a bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies and an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Trinity College (now Trinity International University) in Deerfield, Illinois. He and his wife, Lynne, have two grown children and two grandsons.
A truly amazing work on the study of Proverbs and how we can use it in our own lives. I was given this book to read by my youth pastor in relation to a group I'm in at my church. The author is a pastor who dives into the book of Proverbs explaining why the book was created, what it's about, and how we can use it. I found it all very logical and relating to myself. The really unique thing about the book of Proverbs is that it isn't theological like all the other books of the bible, but instead it takes a more logical stance, and it is extremely clear about what it has to stay. It could be called a guidebook to life, teaching you the way to live out your life and how to act towards others. I recommend this to every person whether they be a Christian or not.
At first I thought the author was being a bit judgmental. I quickly realized that the areas I thought him to be judgmental were the areas I needed to work on. I was just being defensive. This is an easy read and he uses his own personal experiences as examples. It is practical and lines up nicely with the book of Proverbs.
I thought this was a great book! The way the author constructed this book with easy reading, Strong application, convicting questions, and cross referencing Gods words in this book! This book would be great for any Christian!
Great basics for a wise life of faith based on the book of Proverbs. I've read this twice and given it to many friends. Highly readable, practical, challenging, and encouraging.
