I got this book for free from the daily BookBub bargains e-mail bulletin. After finishing it, I am going to be more careful about the "recommended" free e-books I download because my experience with it was very disappointing.
First of all, it was very badly edited, with many typos, displaced commas, and out of place words. I think that there is a great difference between a professionally edited volume by a serious publisher and one apparently edited by amateurs like this one. (The publisher is called Blue Banana).
Regarding the contents, I consider the main character pretty unbelievable for several reasons that I'm not going to detail here in order to not spoil the experience of prospective readers, but one of them is her "alternate life" that she hides from her beloved husband, which in most cases in real life would be the cause for a break-up, or a serious row in the marriage.
Finally, there is a couple of important loose ends that are not tied up in the novel, with a suggestion that they may be resolved in a future installment of the series that begins with this book, which I consider is not fair with the readers.
In all, a pretty forgettable read.

What a let down ! ! !
Unbelievable characters and a weird plot.
For some reason left the story to write a documentary style chapter on the Hungerford massacre, how strange.
Another paragraph seems to be directed directly at the reader, peculiar ! !
The whole book seemed to be very amature.
I did finish it and for that it gets one star.
The writer should stick to her day job ! ! !

Lots of potential but very poorly written. And no likeable characters.

Good Grief! I don’t care how you dress them up, I don’t enjoy most flashbacks. This book has plenty of them. If that didn’t mind-numbingly annoy me to no end, I felt the entire book was a bore. I finished it because needed to know What, Why and How.
I did enjoy the relationship between husband and wife. Another plus, the teenage sons are not really present. The mystery was entertaining enough but those flashbacks *shudder*, they kept throwing me off balance. I kept thinking, “Who is this?” & “Where does this fit in the story.” So frustrating.
Honestly, Lets assume I’ll not continue this series.

Family drama indeed.
When Chrissy’s father suddenly passes away, she’s forced to go home and reunite with her family. At the funeral, she sees a strange man, one who doesn’t belong. At first, she’s able to brush away the sight of him until she finds a secret tin of her father’s in the shed. Inside there are old pictures. Seven boys. And a secret that tied her father to all of them.
Intense and compelling. As Chrissy dove to the bottom of secret after secret, I couldn’t stop listening. I literally binged this story in about four hours. (It’s an 8+ hour audiobook, but I also listen to narrator speed at 2.35x). Chrissy herself was a very likeable character. She was resourceful and determined. Even when she hit dead ends, she figured out new ways to reap the information she needed.
The more Chrissy learned about her father, the more she questioned if she really knew her parents at all. I found that aspect of the book to be an interesting insight because it leaves the question how well do we know any of those close to us?
Narration was perfect for the story.

Chrissy Livingstone is retired MI5, this information she has kept from her family. She is on her way to her sister's house to plan her father's funeral. Chrissy's mother seems to be angry and makes a few uncalled for remarks about the father. The funeral goes as planned but an unidentified man arrives, keeps to himself but is spotted by Chrissy. He quickly departs. A mystery starts to form in Chrissy's thoughts. Strange bits of information start to come out about Gerald Baker, Chrissy's father. Her mother acts more and more strangely as they prepare to dispose of his belongings. As the story unfolds it becomes clear there is much she does not know about her father.
This book takes the reader from England to California! There were many twists and turns that lead to more questions! This is a family with many secrets. Some of the family are unlikeable, but Chrissy's relationship with her sister and husband are at times entertaining. The truth will come out in a surprising twist but not totally unexpected.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request, and have voluntarily left this review. Death of a father is a terrible time in most people lives. But for Chrissy Livingstone, it also creates a huge mystery. Right before her father's death, he received letters about him being a thief, her mother wants nothing to do with his funeral arrangement and then Chrissy finds a tin filled with pictures. Using her skills from a past life she starts to investigate. An interesting mystery with well written character will keep you listening long after you should have turned it off. Well worth the listen.

This is an intriguing introduction to Chrissy Livingstone and how she decides to become a private investigator. It's an exciting, character-driven mystery that gets this International PI series off to a great start. The characters and story are all believably realistic.
Aoife McMahon's narration is outstanding. She handles most of the accents quite well, giving distinctive voices to the characters. This promises to be a worthwhile series to follow.

I KNOW WHEN I'M NOT INTO A BOOKM I KEEP FINDING THINGS TO DO. WITH THIS BOOK I FOUND ANYTHING TO DO BUT READ. THE STORYLINE AND CHARACTERSWERE FLAT AND BORING. THE TROUBLE I REALLY HAVE IS, IS I GOT TWO MORNE BOOKS IN THIS SERIES. GROAN! THE SECRET JUST DRAGGED ON AND ON, I'M SO SICK OF IT. YAWN! DON'T LIKE THE WRITING STYLE VERY MUCH, WHEN CERTAIN THINGS WERE REVEALED, IT WAS JUST SO SAD. ;<

This is my favourite Linda Coles novel yet. I really enjoyed the lead character and was engrossed with this story of a secret buried and slowly unfolding after Chrissy Livingston looses her father. I couldn’t put it down. I look forward to the next one.

A great read and believable characters
Chrissy knows the ropes from her previous job. But this is her first outing for herself. And it seems that the culprit is her father. This book kept me up past my bedtime!

I enjoyed the story up until what I think was supposed to be the climax. Chrissy does all this research & detective work and people finally start telling her what she wants to know, and then...that's it. This wasn't an epic gun battle, grappling on the edge of a cliff kind of book, but the payoff after all that rising action has got to be better.

I found this to be a true mystery story. Chrissy Livingstone, retired from MI-5, lives the life of an ordinary housewife and mother. When her father dies unexpectedly, her mother acts uncharacteristically, which makes Chrissy wonder what is going on. She finds some items that were from her father's younger years and decides to find out the secrets of her father's past.
This book is low on action but high on lies and deceit. Going between the present and the past effortlessly, the author does not allow you to find the answer until the very end. I liked the way the characters were portrayed and secrets were revealed.

I thought this was too much "fluff" without a really intriguing story. They've got Chrissy jet setting across the pond and leaving her family without much problem and supposedly selling kitchen something?. If her husband knew she was ex-CIA, I missed it. I kinda figured it out fairly early about her father. My other option was that he was a perv... which I am glad the book didn't go that route. Easy read that you can skim through. Just not my genre I guess.

The main character in this story is Chrissy Livingstone, a married mother of two teenage sons and a husband called Adam. She has lead a live of secrets since before her marriage to Adam. No-one even in her own family actually knew that she used to work for MI5. She retired from it a few years back, but has kept on with her secret life and pretending to still work with as a sales rep for a Tupperware company. When she wants, she travels off for some ‘me’ time, pretending to go to a conference.
She is shocked to get the news of the sudden death of her father and goes round to help her sister make the funeral arrangements, to take the stress off their mother. It seems there is something secret in her father’s past and he may have done something which hurt others. Chrissy goes round to help clear out some of her father’s things and on starting in his office and finding a secret cupboard full of diaries, her mother storms in and throws them out. She says her husband deserved what he got. This spikes Chrissy’s intrigue.
She goes to the garden shed, after being kicked out of the den, and finds an old tin with seven photos of young lads, taken in 1987, when they were obviously at school and in their teens. Why her father had those photos hidden away she doesn’t know, but aims to find out. She discovers the names of some of the boys from social media and also finds out that three of them have committed suicide in the last year or so. From the clues she finds, she realises there is some sort of link to her father’s work as a financier. Her investigations takes her from a boarding school to Santa Monica.
She is getting half-truths from each person she investigates and questions, but they are not telling her the whole truth. Her own mother won’t tell her where her negative attitude since his death, has come from and her sister doesn’t know anything. There are dark secrets hidden in this storyline and some come out suddenly and some are left till nearer the end of the book to be fully explained. It certainly keeps you wondering what will happen and what she will find out. You also wonder what will happen to her own perfect family if she keeps her charade life going or if she reveals all. Another great read from this author and well recommended. I still can’t forget their book Dark Service! I was lucky to be given an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

The writing was not bad but the grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors were distracting. At first I thought it might be due to being written in British instead of American English but there were simply too many errors, skipped words, words out of order, wrong words used (as if put through spell check but then not re-read). Also the Americans speak as if they are British. I have read worse.
I did not like any of the people in the story. Chrissy looks for someone to blame and in the end blames all of it on one person. Since all the "victims" sowed the seeds for their own destruction the person she blames is the least guilty while giving a free pass to those who actually were far worse. The story is complete but there are dangling threads I assume will be tied up in the sequel.
I may read more by this author but I am not going to seek her out.

When Chrissy Livingstone’s father dies she realizes she didn’t know him at all! When she discovers her father had received threatening letters before her dead being ex MI5 she feel compelled to investigate! This book encompasses rural England all the way to Malibu, California! There were lots of hints and clues but more answers let to more questions! This was a thrilling book with genuinely intriguing characters! With all the family secrets past and present the family seems even Moreno. Complex. Everyone in the family having their own secrets. I liked the ebb and flow of this book. It wasn’t too fast paced it was perfect giving you time to catch your breath and digest all the new info. I really enjoyed this suspenseful book. I look forward to reading more from this author!

The author sets us up for a twisty path of lies, secrets and murder. I didn’t see the end coming and, damn, that was a surprise.
More books about this feminine James Bond who uses brains more than brawn to find the truth.

Chrissy has to deal with the grief of losing her father suddenly & then has to deal with the mystery left behind: a cookie tin with school pictures of 7 different teens. Who are these young men? Why does her dad have their pictures? And why have 3 of them died in the last year from suicide? Chrissy's former job as a spy compels her to chase down those answers.
Chrissy is a complicated character who is keeping secrets of her own from her husband, Adam.
The pacing of this baak is spot on. The dialogue is well written. Definitely a great start to a series. (This book is a stand-alone: no cliffhanger!)

It was ok. The characters were a little bland and not always believable. The pacing was much slower than I would have liked especially for this genre. In places there was an excess of mundane detail and in others it felt like more pertinent information was skimmed over. Especially when it came to specifics about the actual scheme at the center of the plot. The whole thing felt like a second draft rather than a finished product. But the plot was interesting and I kept reading because i wanted to find out what happened.

I really have enjoyed the two books I’ve read in the Chrissy Livingstone series. Now I will be reading the second one in the series and hoping for the fourth one to appear. If it doesn’t appear I will be trying out some of Linda Coles’ other books. The plots of the two I’ve read are well-developed. The heroine is smart and is willing to take risks to learn the truth. Tin Men had a twist I didn’t see coming.

Enjoyable read
I love the crime/thriller drama so am addicted to this type of novel. Some however are better than others - this book proved to be one of those. I enjoyed the main character Chrissy and it was well paced so it only took a few days/nights to read. It was not a cozy mystery but neither was it a physiological thriller. A good read already have the next in the series so looking forward to reading more.

Great mystery.
A mysterious man shows up for the funeral of Chrissy's father. As a former spy, she can't shake off an odd feeling that something is wrong. A journey into her father's past takes a few turns that leads to a shocking ending. Daddy wasn't always a nice man but he's not the only one.

Very amateurish writing that made me pass after reading over 10% .
It is very difficult to continue reading when nothing gets your attention page after page. Then the main character spends several pages describing her feeding a Sparrow and brings seagulls into the conversation. That was the end for me.

Good book, bad pacing
The plot was very interesting and the characters were entertaining but the pacing was very off, for me, with a very long build up and an extremely quick and somewhat disappointing climax. Did successfully set the stage for a sequel, though. Trigger warning: suicide
The plot was very interesting and the characters were entertaining but the pacing was very off, for me, with a very long build up and an extremely quick and somewhat disappointing climax. Did successfully set the stage for a sequel, though. Trigger warning: suicide

Chrissy Livingstone dad had passed away. She used to be a private detective before. As her mom , her and her sister were planning his funeral their mom said " I don't care what you do" So later as they were going thru his private room, she found some journals. But her mom tried to hide them. Why? she was determined to find out what was in them.

I enjoyed my first outing with Chrissy Livingstone. I certainly appreciate when an author creates a character that doesn't exist in a vacuum. Chrissy has a husband, children and family. The story around her father's mystery kept my attention all the way through. I'm looking forward to book 2. Aoife McMahon does her usual stellar job as the narrator.

Liked the twist at the end but not much else, the story definitely had potential but wasn't well written. It was so slow, took until 75% of the way through before we found out anything, doesn't appear to have been proof read and I found it weird how Chrissy talked to herself out loud (speechmarks) and in her head (italics) when neither seemed necessary?! Just wasn't for me.
