Becoming Super Woman: A Simple 12-Step Plan to Go from Burnout to Balance

Rate this book
Is working like crazy driving you crazy? Do you feel daily pressure to keep pushing yourself even when you’re stressed and exhausted?

It's time to stop putting yourself at the bottom of every to-do list and start taking care of yourself first. It's time to leave Superwoman in the movies, where she belongs, and say hello to being a super woman—the best, most productive version of the hero you already are.

For years—maybe your entire life—you’ve been told that success means having it all and doing it all. But the pressure to work more and harder at "it all" is holding you back, not moving you forward. In Becoming Super Woman, New York Times bestselling author Nicole Lapin redefines what it means to be a woman who “has it all”—and shows you how to find lasting success by your own definition, on your own terms.

Nicole candidly shares her own story of career burnout and the diagnosis that prompted her to take her mental health seriously, for the first time ever. Along the way, she discovered that not only was this priority shift not a defeat, it was the key to unlock even greater accomplishments.

In her third book, Nicole lays out an actionable, 12-step plan to guide you in taking control and becoming the she-ro of your own story, with the skills it takes to be a real super woman—skills we should (but often don't) learn growing up, from emotional regulation and boundary setting to interpersonal effectiveness and self-care. Reading this book is like getting a pep talk from your whip-smart, no-nonsense best friend (who also happens to be a megasuccessful businesswoman).

Entertaining, honest, and truly life-changing, Becoming Super Woman shows you that it's not success that brings you happiness, but the other way around.

This book is for you if… you are so overwhelmed by work you can't even admit it or if you see the need to prevent just that.

Overall.
I got the impression that I don't belong to the target group of Nicole's wonderful book quite quickly and it showed although I still found some very useful guidelines in there. I suppose Becoming Super Woman would make even more sense for me 15 years from now when maybe I've succumbed to the working attitude of Germany (hopefully never, though). Nonetheless, I think this is a very valuable book even for those (younger or older than Nicole) that are lucky enough to not have had to go through burnout.

I'm currently in the process of writing my master's thesis while also working two days a week, which means I've worked 7 days a week since September apart from 2 Christmas holidays (it totally pays off to live in a German state with many Christian holidays), NYE, NYD and 2 days in southern Germany with a long-distance friend. I'm so stressed out I have now willingly narrowed down my social interaction to writing breaks with my two friends who are also in the process of writing their thesis. We emotionally support each other while silently sitting next to each other, jotting away best as we can.

You know who inspired me to not put additional stress on my shoulders by agreeing to meetings where I need to squeeze drops of social energy out of myself I'm not willing to give? Super Woman Nicole did that. She helped me realise that I'm currently going through a phase of social burnout, although she is not addressing that primarily in her work. If the date is more than your couch and a movie, I'm not coming.

She also helped me acknowledge I'm not the extrovert people believe me to be. I'm open, talk a lot when I'm in the mood and have no issue approaching people. But my batteries only recharge when alone at home with a book and a cuppa. Even the most perfect social situations, there's always a part of me that'd rather be alone with a book, magazine or movie. I don't want company when I'm suffering emotionally, I just want my peace and quiet. Not because I deflect my situation, but because I'm dealing with my problems most efficiently in this MO.

Thank you, Nicole, Honorary Super Woman. I truly hope 40 y/o Nat won't have to pick up your book one day, I'm sure you know what I mean by that. Much love!

The book is structured as follows.
1 KILLING SUPERWOMAN
2 SELF IS MY FAVOURITE FOUR-LETTER WORD
3 HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT, TOO
4 IN BALANCE
5 BOUNDARIES, BITCH
6 HACKING PRODUCTIVITY
7 PUT DOWN THE F-ING PHONE
8 BE MINDFUL - NOT MIND FULL
9 MASTER THE MIND GAME
10 FIND YOUR TRIBE AND LOVE THEM HARD
11 CHECK YOURSELF
12 BE YOUR OWN HERO

Epilogue

Can't stop, won't stop

Some things to ponder on.
‘No is a complete sentence.’

‘Being all things to all people means you are nothing to yourself. And therein lies the real danger.’
‘Career-oriented men who are also dads don’t expect to attend every school function, make cupcakes for the bake sale, and look like a Calvin Klein underwear model while they do it. [...] What in God’s name does a woman have to be so that she doesn’t have to worry about the carpool?’

‘See, it’s not about the horse. The horse is a mirror of you. The horse will go wherever you want it to go as long as you know exactly where that is and can powerfully communicate that’, the instructor said to me, better analyzing my relationship patterns in ten minutes than I had in a lifetime.
‘Notice that you did not (and should no) apologize in this situation or give in to his pressure. Getting your shit done, at work and otherwise, is nothing to be sorry for. Save the ‘sorrys’ for actual fights.’

Overall I did like this book. It was an interesting read and I'm probably going to try some of the advice given in the books.

What I liked:
Advice given wasn't provided in a condescending or obnoxious way, it read more as genuine assistance than anything else
Each chapter had a wrap up of the key points which really helped my scattered thoughts refocus.

What I didn't like:
It didn't really fit my age group, as a college student. I had trouble fitting a lot of these ideas to the way my life is now.

I am a notorious people-pleaser & yes-sayer, leading to major personal burnout. I am so worried about making sure everyone else is ok that I often leave myself for last. This is a common issue that Nicole brings to light in her book, stating it perfectly that you, "have to put your oxygen mask on before helping others." You're no use to others if you're burned out yourself. Her words have reminded me to reflect, unplug, and rethink the way I've been going about daily activities I never even thought about before. A must read for all!

This book is exactly what I needed!
As someone who is trying to ace their career, have all the money, the perfect family, etc., I needed a reality check.
The author has a great conversational tone; she walks you through 12 easy to understand topics while providing her experience and that of other celebrities experiencing burnout as well.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who feels like they’re stretched too thin!

This book was received as an ARC from BenBella Books in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I was inspired from the start to begin this book hearing about Nicole and the struggles she went through to get to where she is today. I love it when author's of these powerful self-help books incorporate personal stories and experiences to really reflect the information the author is presenting in the book to prove the methods really work rather than relying of experiences of others. Nicole preaches also that when everything is earned, it's so rewarding to have it all because when earned creates value and that is worth more than ever. Also, that you are in control of your own life, if you're not happy, do something about it and Nicole can teach you how. This book will do very well in our self-help collection and I can't wait to share it with our community and watch their lives change.

We will consider adding this title to our self-help collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

The book is a good primer for those who don't already do a lot of reading on the subjects of mental health and maintaining balance. The author writes as though she is your friend sitting with you and talking all of this over with you.

If you prefer a conversational tone and are looking to learn more about balancing and managing your priorities, this is a pretty good book.

“Being a Super Woman...[is] about living with your battle wounds proudly displayed and feeling strong enough to live a full life, even if that means you risk adding more scars. They just show the world that you’re stronger than whatever it is that tried to hurt you. My goal is that you become your own hero when you need it, find your own super powers, and ultimately win your own war.”

The book includes an introduction, chapters on each of Lapin’s twelve steps, an epilogue, resources, and information on the author’s other offerings. Each of the chapters focusing on one of the twelve steps includes a “bottom line” wrap up of the key takeaways. Some chapters also contain “Super Woman Tips” and “FYI” sections with extra insight and “Confessions of a Super Woman,” where Lapin shares personal stories. Included in the book is a code to take a quiz that identifies one’s “Super Woman Type.” The quiz consists of 18 choices between two options based on what one would prefer, for example, leading a team versus being a team member. I completed the quiz and received the type “observer.” The results include a description of the characteristics of the type, ways to experience super self-care and strategies for stressful times. While this activity was a nice bonus as part of the purchase of the book, I do not feel that it is worth $29 on it’s own.

Lapin discusses her rock bottom, when she ended up being admitted into a psych ward due to PTSD and suicide ideation after burning out and being out of balance. I really liked how the hospital bracelet that identified her as a “fall risk” reminded her that she could relapse if she failed to invest in a self-care/wellness plan like the one she developed. The steps cover gratitude journaling; not needing to “lean in” and push harder; the value of setting goals for Finance, Family, Fun, and Fitness; how balance requires emotional wellness; the criticality of establishing boundaries; increasing productivity; digital detoxing to reduce the effects of technology addiction; mindfulness; creating weighted Pro/Con lists to aid in decision making; meditation; manifestation; finding one’s tribe; self-care routines; the importance of mental health days; finding positivity in negative experiences and pain (e.g. using worst-case scenario to promote positive change.)

I really liked Lapin’s writing voice, which includes profanity, candid self-reflection, and fun references such as to the serenity prayer and the 80’s Enjoli perfume commercial that implied women must “have it all.” While I liked the book, it felt a little light to me, almost like an intro to her other offerings. Still, lots about the book resonated with me, especially the author’s positivity. This is a solid three and a half star book for me, rounded up to four stars.

´It´s your life. Live it how you want. I´m not going to judge you for what that looks like because after all, I´m not the one whjo has to wake up to your life every morning´.

I liked a lot the Nicole Lapin, the Boss Bitch recommending the 12-Step Plan to Take Charge of Your Career. Successful, brave, business-oriented, non-stop working to reach her medium-, short- and long-term goals. However, I love even more the Super Woman Nicole Lapin from her latest book.

Becoming Super Woman starts with a Nicole Lapin coping with a traumatic past and burned out. Superwoman needs to separate the ´super´ from the ´woman´. The new woman is emotional, able to recognize her weaknesses and brave enough to say ´stop´ when too much is too much. Organising her life around five basic categories - Career, Romance, Family&Friends, Physical Health, Emotional Wellness - the Super Woman who is about to become balances her emotions with the intellect, switching in a completely new direction her entire life.

Introducing the emotional intelligence quotient adds a completely different depth into the everyday life: ´For instance, emotional intelligence gives you the ability to recognize that your emotions are heading downhill before they get out of control, while mental wellness makes it easier to access that awereness and gives you the resources to act on it´. Through journaling, therapy and daily exercise and practice, one can change his or her level of emotional intelligence with positive effects on the entire conundrum of the everyday life - and wellness.

As in her previous books, Nicole Lapin writes in a very structured, organised way, with practical advices and easy steps to follow. Through persistent daily practice, one will learn how to negotiate boundaries, how to balance the work and personal relationships, how to create realistic work schedule, when and for how long to take a break and how to wor efficiently instead of just being ´busy´ all the time.

´Being a Super Woman isnt´t about calling it a victory and hanging up your cape. It´s about living with your battle wounds proudly displayed and feeling strong enough to live a full life, even if that means you risk adding more scars´.

Making mistakes is fine, not being always a winner is always fine. Surviving your own failures and assuming the risk of your life is the best asset you can have. Becoming Super Woman is a matter of greatness and this is what you, and me, and you too, deserves.

She made a successful career anchoring business shows on network television, on CNBC, Bloomberg and CNN, and contributing money reports to TODAY and MSNBC.

Yet as Nicole Lapin felt the daily pressure to keep pushing herself even when she was stressed and exhausted, it finally led to burnout.

In her just-released third book, Becoming Super Woman: A Simple 12-Step Plan to Go from Burnout to Balance (BenBella Books), Lapin candidly shares her very personal story and the diagnosis that prompted her to take her mental health seriously, for the first time ever.

She describes the emergency hospitalization that prompted her to slow down the process and make a priority shift that became the key to unlocking even greater achievements.

For years, she says, maybe your entire life, you’ve been told that success means having it all and doing it all. But working more and harder is holding you back, not moving you forward. In Becoming Super Woman, Lapin redefines what it means to be a woman who “has it all,” and shows how to find lasting success by your own definition, on your own terms.

Once again, I am reading one of Nicole Lapin’s masterpieces, Becoming a Super Woman. Like her previous titles, I go in fully knowing that this will be a great piece. Guess what? In the end, this book turns out to be an excellent text not only for women but for anyone who wants to build their financial muscles.

I am sure nobody hates money if this is the case, Becoming a Super Woman is a must-read for you. Like most of her titles, Nicole Lapin stresses the need to get your life together as a woman and gain financial independence. One characteristic that makes this title a bit different is that she emphasizes learning to focus on energy on specific goals. Don’t try to please everything that comes your way.

She maintains that being goal-oriented and maintaining high-level financial discipline is the foundation for becoming a superwoman. In a 12 step by step plan, Nicole Lapin draws from her personal experience and gives modern and relevant examples applicable to the contemporary woman. Additionally, her choice of words is excellent—no complex grammars of financial jargon.

I enjoyed this reading this guide. I hope you also find it interesting and helpful.

Borrowing from the 12 step recovery program, this book goes from accepting that as a woman you cannot dot it all and have it all and that's okay, all the way to how to incorporate this into your daily life as you strive to achieve your goals.
I love how the author straight on calls out some societal misconceptions about 'superwomen,' and better yet, how she uses examples from her own struggles and those of other famous figures to provide a reality check.
If you struggle with your finances, then this book is a must read-because she also talks about careers, spending, investing and budgeting.
Of all the twelve steps, my favorite was step 5, where the author explores the need for boundaries. It's what I am learning and embracing at this point in my life and I am glad that I came across a book that helps shed light on how to go about this.
Thanks Netgalley for the eARC. I would recommend this to every woman out there, it's okay to take a break, take a step back, exhale and come back ready to forge ahead.

Becoming Super Woman is Nicole Lapin at her most vulnerable and relatable. Unlike her earlier books that focus on career and money, this one turns to something just as vital: what happens when relentless ambition leads to burnout. Nicole candidly shares her own struggles with mental health and the pivotal moment that forced her to redefine what success truly means. Among all of her books, this one resonated with me the most.

Let me cut to the chase: this book succeeds because it offers a clear and practical 12-step plan for setting boundaries, protecting your energy, and cultivating resilience. The strengths lie in Nicole’s honesty, her actionable advice, and the organized framework that makes the lessons easy to implement in daily life. While the bold and casual tone may not appeal to every reader, the depth of her message and the authenticity of her voice shine through, leaving a lasting impact.

This book had a few moments where I thought "now that's an interesting way to approach that". But by and large it embodied the worst of the self-help genre. Almost the entire book seems to assume that you have unlimited time and money and no reason to worry about changes to either of those things. So even the good ideas I stumbled across would either require that I have a complete lifestyle change before attempting, or seemed so detached from the reality that they did not hold up to application, at least not in my life.

If you are already successful professionally and make six-figures a year and have the resources to pause and take a look at your life, maybe this would be helpful. But if you're someone who lacks that income to begin with and needs to make changes will continuing to move through life, this won't have much for you but empty platitudes.

Tons of practical advice for all women, whatever their age, their profession, or social status. I felt like Nicole was being my personal coach or my therapist while reading this book, she was telling me to get off my feet and start thinking and writing about things, always keeping in mind that you have the power to change your life to make it what you want it to be.

I specifically liked the difference that Nicole makes between "having it all" and "doing it all," pointing out that you can have it all, but you can't do it all. Having it all does not mean be the best at everything, and definitely not all at once.

I will definitely recommend this book to my students and mentees.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book I've read by Nicole Lapin and it will not be the last.

I am throughly impressed by her writing style and 12 steps to feeling better. While the steps are not easy, they're easy to understand and work through. They don't take ages to take effect; they can be done immediately.

You can read her happiness in her words, and that makes you want to do what she's created for the reader.

Well worth my time, and yours, to read and follow.

I’m a sucker for self-help books, but I felt this was genuine. I felt very engaged while listening and the information was applicable to my life now...being everything to everyone is a set up for mental crisis. I appreciate the 12 step approach as a resource for feeling more grounded. I prefer the term grounded and maybe well-rounded over balance. I’m all done with the cliqué “work/life balance.” My suggestion would be to listen to the book but perhaps also get the tangible version for referencing.

LOVED THIS BOOK. In a culture where women are expected to "have it all" this book is an amazing no-BS guide to coping with insane expectations and learning to put ourselves first. Nicole is so real and funny, and her advice is actually follow-able. I follow her on instagram too and she provides a lot of inspiration and tips there as well. A perfect book for women of ANY age. I'm gonna gift to to some teenage friends of mine because why not start em young! Also its a beautiful book, good for gifts.

I don’t doubt that Lapin had done the therapy and the reading and the journaling and the hard reckoning with herself that this book attempts to distill into 12 e-z steps. The problem is you can’t just read a book and be done with it. These are BIG concepts, like pillars of people’s lives—career, relationships, ambition, boundaries, mental health etc—and take a ton of thought to work through. The book oversimplifies like all of them. It’s not bad advice but some things just need to be experienced in order to be learned …

If you’ve ever felt like you have to do it all, Becoming Super Woman is the reminder you need that burnout isn’t a badge of honor. Nicole shares her own hard-learned lessons and offers practical tools for setting boundaries, protecting your energy, and putting yourself first without guilt. Each chapter ends with clear takeaways, making it easy to apply her advice in real life. This is more than a self-help book—it’s a survival guide for anyone ready to stop running on empty and finally thrive.

100% would recommend.

I love how real Nicole gets in this book—she shares her own experience as a guide to navigate burnout. She's been through burnout and breakdown and really goes into detail on what it was like and what she did wrong to help readers prevent it in their own life. After reading "Rich Bitch" and "Boss Bitch" I knew I needed to read "Becoming Super Woman." I love how all her tips are actionable and easy. Balancing work, a social life, relationships, and family obligations is freaking hard and other guides like this can feel condescending. But Nicole talks to readers like a friend, not some stuffy expert, and is never judgy in her advice. I've already been sharing her tips with my friends & colleagues so I definitely think you should read this book!

This book sets realistic boundary’s for self love and expresses the its ok to say no mindset. I think it an age were expectations and self worth overshadow what we can realistically accomplish it is a great example of how to reflect on how to put yourself first and value what you can do and do it well. This book doesn’t really express much that isn’t already out there but I still found it to be a good reminder. I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.

It's quite something to hear such a raw account of a breakdown/burnout from somebody who from outward appearances is on top off their game and seems to have their s*** together. I commend Nicole for her honesty and thank her for wanting to help others avoid what she went through. It certainly is helping me.

I am big fan of Nicole's books and this one could not have hit closer to home. With all the modern day challenges Women face being a Super Woman is definitely what we strive for and sometimes burn out because of it. Nicole breaks it down how not to burn out while still achieving the success you want and desire, not what society makes think we need to become.

This book honestly is a great tool geared especially towards women to become Super Women (note the space). This gives you a 12 step guide to be a better balanced women who can succeed and also a tool to look back on when you start to feel unbalanced. Will probably read this again whenever I feel like my life is in chaos because truthfully it will probably happen because life is life.
