Fugitives from the Conclave, Dormael and his friends must seek the next piece of the Nar’doroc deep within a perilous hinterland. Beset by vicious monstrosities, they uncover a place where ancient secrets lay forgotten, a graveyard abandoned to the march of time. Its revelations could lead them to the next fragment of the shattered artifact, but menace lurks in the shadows of its history. To survive it, a dangerous sacrifice must be made.
Across the Stormy Sea, Nalia Arynthaal, Princess of the Winter Passes, dives into the midst of an empire at war. With nothing but guile and icy resolve, she works to revenge herself upon those who disgraced her family. Surrounded by enemies, Nalia must embrace a treacherous ally to bring down an empire bolstered by thousands of angry swords. To restore her family’s honor, Nalia may have to renounce her own.
Everything may yet fall to powers darker still—the seeds for which are being sown beneath the surface. Will Dormael and company recover the shattered Nar’doroc? Will Nalia bring down her enemies, or be crushed by the unyielding march of empire? What secrets lie buried in the past?
The City Under the Mountain is book four of The Seven Signs, the continuation of a sword and sorcery series full of magic, intrigue, conspiracy, violence, and mystery.
D.W. Hawkins haunts the badlands of southern Arizona and Sonora, Mexico. Sightings in the wild are rare, and this creature should be approached with caution. If you insist on pursuing this dangerous animal, you can find out more about him by visiting his website.
You can also follow him on Facebook, Instagram, Bookbub, and YouTube.
I enjoyed this entry to The Seven Signs series. I had read a few reviews that mentioned how slow it was, but I didn't find it particularly slow. I did find some of the Chapters to be overly long - if it takes more than an hour to read one chapter, it's time to start splitting them up into multiple chapters. But, otherwise, I enjoyed it.
The introduction of the Ice Princess and her storyline was well played and very well placed. In a series like this, it is risky to bring a whole new character at this stage, but it felt like she'd been with us all along and I like her and the games she's playing.
As for the previous cast, the characters have settled into their roles well, and I thoroughly loved the ending in slums of Shundov. Plenty of room for everyone to keep going and I can hardly wait for all the various storylines to come together.
I got the first three books in the series free on Amazon, and I'm thrilled I did. I'm a definite convert to the world D.W. Hawkins is creating, and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series The Oath of the Blade.
This one was a bit slower and I found myself having trouble continuing it at points. The writing was still amazing as usual and very descriptive but I don’t feel like a lot really happened in this book. But the story continues to intrigue and the mystery seems to have developed quite a bit more and that will definitely have me continuing this series, just to know what happens after all of it is over. It was not as interesting and thrilling as the ones before but overall it was a good read. Looking forward to the next one!
I am a woman who loves to read books that take me somewhere knew and don’t feel so similar to other books I have read. Great characters. Wonderful fights and a touch of magic. It gives you characters you love, feel sorry for, annoy you, and ones you hate. It has a bit of everything. Waiting patiently for the next book in this series. Wonderful action and fantasy with characters you want to get to know better, even the ones you hate.
But slower then previous and because I didn't have much time to smash it right away, might have struggled to keep with side stories, big plus for Nalia. But! Got to love D'Jenn who took some shine of Dormael. Bethany keeps growing and her story is something special which I'm hoping to explode in next books, not enough of Shawna. Still, it worked really well and I'm looking forward to the next one!
Wow, what a good read. I only looked down at the percentage when I was about 80% of the way through and I thought - "oh no! It's nearly over!" Really didn't want it to end. I can't wait for the next book. D.W Hawkins is such a talented writer, the world and characters he has created will have you well and truly enthralled. The tension, the moments of humour and the action will keep you saying "just one more page"!
Book 4 had errors throughout and was a fun read. The overall plot and characters have developed well, but there is a lot of filler information throughout the book. I am not sure about reading book 5. The overall plot and characters have grown, but digressed in places as the series continues.
This Series just keeps getting better. Yes this book felt a bit slower than the previous ones(that doesn’t mean it was any less intriguing) but it’s setting up more of the plots with history included. The characters are evolving but they just don’t seem to catch much of a break. The antagonists are raising chaos wherever they decide to go. It’s a solid read that kept my imagination reeling.
A great story, well told. It's been a long wait, but at last we get to catch up with D'Jenn, Dormael, Bethany & the others. The writing style has evolved over the 4 books (for the better in my opinion) so, if you liked the others, dive right in.
From the start to finish of this book the pace does not let up . Changing character perspective and you still fell like it’s a mown trill disaster. Fun read enjoyable serried so far.
I picked up a link for a free book and have ended up with all 4 of the series. A terrific series with lots of twists and turns in the multiple plots. I can't wait for the next episode. Well done.
Solid story, for the observant it binds threads tighter together and definitely sets up the rest of the story, but leaves a few good new mysteries unresolved. Really good foreshadowing and tantalizing nuggets dropped throughout the series, but this one in particular.
This series is just really good, and this book is possibly the best so far. Skilfully handles the story from several different viewpoints, threads weaving together for what promises to be an epic conclusion as all the players finally clash. Recommended for anyone who likes sword and sorcery with a splash of darkness. Keep writing Mr Hawkins, it's good stuff!
