Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would find my true mate in my ER. He’s handsome and everything I’ve ever wished for in a mate but will my age be a problem for him? And most importantly, what will the houseful of strays I’ve adopted think of Charlie? ~Dakota

Waking up in the hospital was not on my list of things to do but finding my true mate makes it worth the pain. My father pushed me out of our pack when I wouldn’t conform to his mold of what an alpha should be like but Dakota shows me I’m worthy of his love just the way I am. Not everyone in my instafamily welcomes me with open arms and I can’t help but wonder, ‘Will I ever find acceptance?’ ~Charlie

This 30,000 word novella is filled with adopted family feels, mpreg, and knotty fun and intended for 18 and over readers.

Toby Wise is a stay at home parent who hails from a tiny town in Wisconsin. Contrary to popular Wisconsin stereotypes, he’s not a cheese-head who enjoys beer but rather an introvert who spends all his time on the internet, drinking coffee, spending time with his kid, and cooing about his adorable cat, Pikachu.

In April of 2019, A Collection of Strays was born after the world of fanfiction drew him back into his love of writing. Now he’s writing all things omegaverse as long as it includes silly moments and found family.

Sweet and fluffy. It’s a bit rushed and could use some world building and the characters fleshed out a bit more. There were some typos too but it’s an easy read.

Note: There’s a box set of the complete series. KU.

Book 1 in Toby Wise’s Collection of Strays series. You don’t need the prequel, Before Fate - but I think it helps with the backstory/world building.

Quick and low angst shifter omegaverse, fated mates, MPREG novella. It’s insta love between Charlie & Dakota and syrupy sweetness. I like Dakota’s kids and how hard Charlie works to connect with all of them. The banter is a lot of fun - especially since the youngest of the kids is turning 18 during the story. Charlie and Dakota get their HEA and a cute little epilogue.

I’m looking forward to Elwood’s book, Touching Fate.

Ageless Fate is the first book in this series and the first release from this author. I really enjoyed the aspect of family and belonging - the series is named Collection of Strays, after all - and how we will get to see all sorts of different shifters meet their mates and find acceptance and love.

Dakota, a 40 year old omega, thinks that he will go through life without finding his mate. He's content raising his kids who are all sorts of different shifters, but does want that love that comes with a mate. Dakota unexpectedly finds his mate - Charlie - when he is brought to the hospital that Dakota works at after being involved in a car crash.

There are definitely some good moments but also some things that didn't fully work for me. I especially enjoyed all of the family moments, I adored Dakota's kids and can't wait for their stories. Cameron and Isaiah especially, I look forward to when they find mates. I enjoyed that both Charlie and Dakota were not your stereotypical alpha and omega as far as personality. However, I feel like there could be more solid world building, as well as attention to details as far as Charlie's past and where he was headed, how even after being in a car accident, he was totally healthy enough for sex. I get that shifters heal quick, but damn. And Dakota didn't read like a 40-year-old to me. He came off as much younger.

I will be interested in the next book of this series and see how this author grows and develops.

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

This was a sweet shifter story with a bit of a quirk. A stay at home Alpha and a strong omega. I usually like big strong Alphas, but with all the kids it seems to work for this story. My only real complaint was that they kept referring to Dakota as old. I’m sorry, but 41 isn’t old.

I love love love this book.
I am a sucker for found family books and this is what this book is about. I love all the relationship that form throughout the book and there was so much love it made me super happy reading.
This is also an omegavers book and our mcs are fated mates and therefor fall for each other basically in an instant but I think the author has done it so well that I believe in their feelings for each other. I just love me some good and fluffy mate stories.
Besides that I just love all the characters. The book is very short so there is definitely not enough about all the characters but since this is a series I hope to get to know all of them much better in the next books. However it is great that the characters are diverse and you get so many interesting and very lovable characters in this.
The only thing I would really have liked to be different is the world building. I don’t need a lot of world building to love a story but this had nearly non. I was very confused if humans do know that shifters exist or not because sometimes they seemed secretive about it and other times it didn’t feel like a secret at all.
Oh and one more thing I wish would have been handelt a little bit different is the story around Charlie’s Dad. The scenes were just too short and done too fast. It left room for more. Well maybe it will be brought up in the upcoming books again. I kind of hope so.
At least I have to say while this is not perfect I love this book. It gave me so many fluffy and happy feelings I just had to gave it a high rating. Now I am looking forward to read all the other books in the series.

I picked this up as a freebie and while it's not a bad read I do have a few things that bothered me.

1. Pacing: Things go so fast...there was smut from the beginning and while I do enjoy a good smut I do like to know more about my characters than...he nurse omega, he victim alpha...they are mates...let mating begin.

2. Characters: Because of the pacing the characters are all underdevelopped which made it hard for me to root for them. I do adore the idea of found family and outcasts banding together to form their own pack.

3. The lack of story outside the mating/family. Hints are being dropped but there's obvious sequel baiting going on. However because I don't feel invested in the characters and there wasn't really a plot I feel no need to invest more time into the series.

Not a bad read, but I won't he exploring the series further.

This was very insta-love but still sweet and refreshing.

Dakota and Charlie both have some insecurities. Dakota is a 41 year-old omega that thinks he's too old to find his mate and Charlie doesn't believe he's a "good" alpha (based on the crap his dad said/did).

When they find each other, the connection is instant and super sexy...well, after Charlie wakes up :D

I loved meeting all of Charlie's kids. I wanted to know more about how they all became a family...but I'll probably have to wait for the next books to find out.

This novella is a great start for this debut author. Ageless Fate by Toby Wise is the first for the shifter/mpreg series – A Collection of Strays. The story is a roller coaster; the first few pages are the usual crawl up but when it goes over the first hill, you are thrown into a fast pace of fun, brief angst, laughs, smiles and lots of colors. Charlie and Dakota are fated mates and instead of fighting, it is instalove and instafamily. I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of shifters in this close family of choice rather than by blood. The family has wolves, dragons, a non-shifter, and unicorns oh my! Although I am quite curious about Cameron since he does not shift but tends to know everything. Through the whole story, there is acceptance, openness, honesty, and humor.

This is a one-sit fast read that is written and flows well. The characters are what really make up the story, and I want to know more. I will be reading the next one (which is why I am giving an extra half star so this is a solid 4 read). If you need a pick-me-up from a book hangover or from real life, this one is perfect.

Received this as an arc for my own honest opinion.

My friend recommended this series and I must say I really liked this first book. I always like books that contain an eclectic group of characters. I liked that Charlie wasn’t a typical alpha. I loved that for the most part Dakota was more dominate in the relationship and Charlie was more the nurturing one. It made for a nice change of the alpha/omega dynamic.

If I had one gripe, it would be that I think the story could have used a bit more world building. I couldn’t really get a grasp on how long the shifters lived in this world. Dakota mentioned feeling old at 40 but then alluded to some of his children being centuries old. All in all, it was a really good start to the series. Hopefully, I’ll get more information as the series progresses.

I liked the found family theme and how it broke stereotypes, but everything happened wayyyy to fast for it to have any sort of emotional impact.

Content warnings include: a/b/o shifter setting featuring mpreg, toxic parents, sex on-page, misgendering of a non-binary character until their pronouns are mentioned.

I cannot get over the twists and turns these authors are interjecting into their paranormal stories these days. The omegaverse universe still remains the same, alpha/omega, MPREG, for the most part, however, the readers are seeing stronger take-charge omegas and alpha who would rather be more laid back and take on the more submissive roles.

This is that type of story. Dakota was an older omega, an ER nurse who when he could not have his own, adopted five children and were raising them as a single father. With little thought to ever finding a mate, and going past the age of child bearing, Dakota expected to watch his children grow and move on, leaving him alone in the world. Until the morning everything changed. One accident brought a man named Charles into his ER and triggered his heat. Mates are precious, and Dakota and Charlie wastes no time in becoming one.

Charlie was a peach, a quiet alpha, who, after living with a demanding father was happy to let his mate take charge. It was good to see the interactions between the two and Charlie's perception and unconscious thoughts on becoming a father to kids not his own. And oh, those kids. I cannot wait to read their stories!!!

New author Toby Wise made a fantastic debut. I am keeping my fingers crossed that they keep this series as interesting and as diverse as this book.

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author through LesCourt.

For some reason it was hard for me to get into this story. It wasn’t until about 60% in that I finally started enjoying the cast of characters. The kids were wonderful…really all the characters were sweet.

I did enjoy how Dakota was a take charge omega and started his life without needing an Alpha. Charlie was an easy going Alpha letting Dakota continue to run the house as he did before Charlie showed up.

This was a good book overall.

This book was short but still well written. I was happy to see an Alpha who wasn't the regular strong and confident one.
There were plenty of good cues to a rich plot, but the author decided to keep it short, which is a shame but I guess it's ok.
I had a hard time understanding if shifters were known to humans or not. In the end, I think they don't.
I can't wait to read about the others.

A/B/O role reversal

Sweet A/B/O shifter fluffy mm MPREG romance

The adopted human child with special insight into the future makes sure his tough, omega wolf shifter dad gets to his ER shift as a nurse early. Dakota meets his fated mate, a subdued, younger and injured Alpha wolf kicks out of his family for being too laid back (not aggressive enough). Dakota’s brood of different adopted shifters and a human have to deal with a sudden “step dad” Alpha mated to their beloved a Omega father, and they are very protective.

While this may not be five star writing or a five star romance, I have been waiting for some more role reversal in A/B/O settings, and this adds some additional of my favorite tropes. Hence my personal reaction is I enjoyed the heck out of this fluffy, quick, and sweet strong, older Omega with a family finding a fated mate in a somewhat abused, younger alpha. I loved the inclusion of a human(ish) child in the mixed shifter family, and the range of characters in the children.

It’s Omegaverse fluff, but it’s my kind of onegaverse fluff.

The biggest critique is it moves so quickly (it’s a novella) that most developments are given short shrift and move at lightning speed. If you just accept quick, fated mate romances with just jump into most serious and sexy developments with a line or two, it reads as quick and escapist (rather than eye-rollingly fast and simple).

I was pleasantly surprised at how well this debut novel was written & this is a splendid start to a series called “A Collection of Strays” I will admit that I really enjoyed reading it. I found the story-line and plot quite well-written & entertaining. The characters are quite well-developed & have a variety of traits and different sides to their personalities, they are quite realistic with their emotional feelings & expectations.
There is: a male omega wolf shifter & nurse is under the impression that at the age of 41yrs old he will go through life without a mate (Dakota), his very varied & unconventional family of adopted children, a alpha wolf shifter that was injured in a car crash (Charles aka Charlie), his not so-nice father & pack alpha, various kind of shifters, mild twists, some humor, drama, discovery, ultimatum, family issues, a unexpected surprise, memories, insecurities, verbal banter, a family get-together, happiness, laughter, love, steamy scene & a sweet happy epilogue. There is a tantalizing glimpse of the next book in the series.

Decent

Decent enough paranormal read. Fated mates get together right away which I liked. Dakota is an older omega who has taken in random shifter kids (unicorn, wolf. Dragon psychic human). Charlie is a younger alpha who has left his pack. Together they form a bigger family complete with mpreg. Focused writing that came off stilted at times. Some errors, especially spelling.

KU, paranormal, fated mates, wolf shifter, alpha omega, mpreg, babies, book in series, standalone

3.5 🌟 rounded up

This is a very interesting novella. The characters are well developed and the storyline is intriguing. There are several kinds of shifters involved, and a good representation of the LGBT+ community.

Dakota is an ER nurse in his forties who has never found his true mate. However, he has somehow adopted five "children" in his lifetime that each have a unique story to tell. They are a diverse family, but are also very devoted to one another.

Charles is the Alpha heir to his father's very old fashioned, traditional pack. He has tried to live up to his father's expectations, but he became so miserable that he packed up and left with no real plan or destination in mind.

When Charles is in an accident and brought into Dakota's hospital for treatment, Dakota knows immediately that he has found his mate. When Charles awakes from surgery, one of Dakota's children is there to tell him about his mate who needs him to come soon.

This begins the story of Dakota and Charlie and their new family. While most of the kids adapt pretty quickly, some take a little more effort. This is also kind of a role reversal trope, because Charlie, as the alpha, has no problem letting Dakota run the family and take control. This book is very focused on acceptance; race/species, gender identity, nonconforming to societal norms, etc.

When Charlie's father shows up unannounced and becomes rude and somewhat hostile, Charlie's new family backs him up and shows him what a real family is. At this point, Star, the midwife who is more than a midwife, shows up and relaxes the mood a bit, but I also felt like her words had a bit of foreshadowing in them as well.

When Dakota finally gives birth, Star convinces Charlie that although he may not live it day in and day out, he is still an Alpha, and with that comes the power and responsibilities of the title. This gives Charlie a boost in self-esteem that he needs in order to take care of his mate and new cub.

Overall, this is a very sweet and fluffy novella. I look forward to seeing what happens next when the kids start finding mates of their own.

Happy reading!

Strong 3.5 stars for this debut novel. Overall, I really did enjoy the book & can't wait for more in this series. When Dakota & Charlie first meet, Charlie is coming into the e/r & being rush straight to surgery as he has a broken bone in his thigh & has a side wound that required stitches. He wakes up from the surgery and immediately goes to Dakota's house where sexy times ensues. Now I know that shifters heal pretty fast but, holy cow, even with Dakota on top, there is going to be pain from just having surgery and a side wound. Apparently they go all night and by the next day, he is able to walk and then shift and run in wolf form. I just would have liked to see Dakota taking care of him for at least a day or two before he was all healed. Also, I would have liked to have know what happened in the accident. Where was he headed when it happened? When do they get his belongs? I assume they were all in the vehicle. When he is formally introduced to the rest of the family, I would have liked for them to have given him some background. When he finds out that Isaiah is a unicorn (that made me so very happy as I love unicorns & there are not enough unicorn shifters), they are like "Should we tell him just how special I am?" And Dakota is like no we'll surprise him later. I'm not sure what the surprise is and I don't think it was ever really addressed. I loved how Dakota has all these kids who are different types of shifters and I can't wait to read their individual stories. Oh and let there be dragons!!! Who doesn't love dragons, especially twin dragons, sighs. I have an idea of what Cameron is and I think his story is going to be the most heartbreaking. Now I will wait impatiently, I have no patience whatsoever, for the next book.

This whole story was so dang cute! There were so many things that I completely didn't expect and was charmed most of the way through. I will say though, that it feels like we're jumping into the series at book two rather than book one. Quite a bit of background information is missing so I had a hard time connecting to the main characters as individuals. The whole brood, however, was quirky, funny, snarky, mis-matched awesomeness. I'm absolutely in for more of the series.

I adored the family dynamic and all the different types of shifters. For Dakota to manage as a single father to a whole mess of children and have each of them love him so intensely in their own ways was absolutely admirable. I would have liked to see more of his parenting from the genesis. We don't find out why or how he "collected" his children really and that big piece of how they all came to be together wasn't given enough attention. Granted, this story is mainly about the romantic relationship and Charlie is coming in quite late to the party, but still, I would have liked a lot more background.

What impressed me the most were the MC's and their portrayal of non-typical alpha/omega roles. Each found their ideal match in someone who had their genetic role by genetic default and yet their personalities were atypical versions of those roles. Dakota was a strong, determined, firm omega who loved deeply and openly. He was all that hearth and home are truly meant to be.

While it didn't feel like a satisfying standalone due to the lack of personal histories, the overall story was absolutely charming and I'm eager to find out how each of the children find and learn to keep their mates.

Good start, great characters

I received this book by the author and This is my honest opinion.
Okay this was a new to me author, but I liked the book description so decided to give it a try and I liked it. First off the cover is lovely and when I started to read it had great characters that really made me love the book. The author manager to create these characters and give them personality plus that feeling of a close knitted family and all that comes with it from arguments, banter and love. It had a may december theme but it wasn't kept on about and was not the be all and end of the plot. This was more about Charlie the alpha integrating into dakotas little family of adopted strays and gave you that warm fuzzy feeling.
I would of liked more detail on how Dakota came to have all his kids, and Charlie's past history to round out the plot more. The straight to bed thing while Charlie had come straight from hospital was a bit quick for my liking and I would of liked it to have been a bit more drawn out but I suppose when you find your mate you find your fated mate😀. The story was a bit choppy And I found it to skip a bit when instead I would of loved a bit more detail but overall it was good and I'm looking forward to each of the kids upcoming stories as we have a unicorn, dragons, wolf and something else. Well worth a read for it characterisation that I instantly warmed up to each, and of course Charlie's endeavours to be accepted by dakotas kids was a real heart warmer as well as his vulnerable not so confident persona💗

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:

5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-
Away-book like
‘Jesse's Smile' or ‚Joey’ from Angelique Jurd,
‘Save the at he kids' series from EM Leya,
‘Love’s Tethered Heart’ from C.L. Etta or
'Liberty' from Seth King),
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often reread and is a
WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises
(like most of Andrew Grey’s books)
it's like an A

3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few
times a year (most romances where you can
enjoy for relaxing and during waiting times in
hospitals). I can recommend them definitively!
It's like an B+

3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader,
maybe 2-3 times a year. It’s like a B

2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-
reader (i wouldn't recommend it heartily, but
it was ok). It's like a C-, D

1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too
many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an
absolut NO-GO). It's like failure in the whole
line, dismissed, repeat the class

i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the story of an older omega named Dakota and his fated mate, Charlie. Dakota had adopted a number of children that were mostly older and a variety of shifters. When Dakota's son told him to go to the hospital early for his shift as a nurse, he went and met his fated mate Charlie, who was in an accident. Charlie was an alpha who was banished from his pack because his father, the alpha didn't think he was strong enough to be an alpha. When Dakota saw Charlie, he went into heat and he was sent home. When Charlie woke up, he met one of Dakota's kids and they took him home to see Dakota. Charlie and Dakota had an instant love and Charlie wanted to help Dakota with his heat. Charlie found the family he never thought he would have with Dakota and the kids and Charlie loved and accepted them all as his own from the beginning, even if he had some problems with the youngest alpha. I loved this story about a family of different shifters. I love how the family was so accepting of each other and supportive. I think Charlie and Dakota were great together and i hope to read more of this series in the future. This was the first book i read by Toby and i can't wait to read more.

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]

Ageless Fate by Toby Wise is the first book in their new mpreg shifter series, A Collection of Strays.

The greatest aspect of Ageless Fate, in my opinion, was the cast of characters. This makeshift family of shifters steals your heart and leaves you wanting each of them to find their happily ever after. Charlie is an omega who acts as the alpha of his unconventional family, while Dakota is an alpha was acts more like an omega. Together they balance each other and work perfectly as mates. Cameron is hilarious and probably my favorite of all the kids with his dog jokes. Isaiah is unique and proud. Elwood and Everett in their animal form are playful and fun. Mandy is a bit stand-offish but I am looking forward to seeing her character grow and open up as the series progresses.

Overall, for a debut novel, Ageless Fate was a good start to a series. I am definitely interested in reading future books in this series.

Sweet and fun Alpha/Omega romance that was creative and touching. I loved the dynamics that were different than the average story. This story had a strong, older omega, Charlie, that was already the head of a family of adopted children. Dakota is a young and gentle alpha that is very comfortable letting his omega take the lead. The leadership was shared and discussed and i loved how both men could be themselves.

I really enjoyed Charlie and Dakota together! They were so connected and supportive of each other and they worked through their issues as adults. I would love to see more of them.

Their made family is comprised of some very unique individuals and i so enjoyed the dynamics that were created. I am looking forward to more books by this author and i so hope that they bring some more of these characters to life. This is a wonderful debut novel and i see lots of promise for them in the future.

I was gifted this book from the LesCourt Author Services and i freely give my honest opinion and review.
