Brian Polk had been stateside for barely a year after leaving the Air Force when the unthinkable happened. It was an interstellar invasion—the beginning of the end of known civilization. First, military installations and the largest cities across the globe were turned to rubble. Tens of millions of souls lost during a horrific reign of terror. Government centers and law enforcement resources were next. Finally, the aliens eliminated humanity’s means to electronically communicate with each other. The Earupitan’s technology and weaponry was so remarkable, so advanced, humanity never really had a chance. The aliens now walk brazenly among humans—their reptilian eyes always watchful, always scrutinizing. No one is safe, and almost everyone who gets taken into an OEC center never sees the light of day again. Humanity now lives in fear—freedom is a thing of the past. And then there are those who have befriended the enemy . . . But not Captain Brian Polk. He’s far more interested in taking back a little of what was stolen. When he acquires some of the alien technology, he finally has hope of making some small difference. He might even be able to pull off the impossible—that or he'll die trying.Great Sci Fi Adventure! I had hours of flights and layovers and The Hidden Ship kept me highly entertained during my travels. The characters are great and the tension never lets up. This was similar to the Scrapyard series Mark wrote, which I also loved. I highly recommend the book if you enjoy sci-fi adventure.- SCCool Scifi Alien Invasion StoryMan that was awesome. I don't suppose we could see the further adventures of Captain Polk in a follow-up book? I enjoyed the action, just like all that crazy action-packed fighting in the Scrapyard series. Thanks for a GoodRead. Robert Great Military Science Fiction Alien invasion, heroes, space opera, sex, betrayal, good guys, underdogs, arrogant alien buttheads all present and accounted for! Written like the classics from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. Good stuff. Sam Just as good as Ship Wrecked Hidden Ship was just as good as Mark Wayne McMcGinnis' Ship Wrecked, which was my favorite military space opera book. I liked the characters, human and alien. The aliens too had their good points as not all were truly cruel and merciless. All in all a great story filled with action with a little suspense thrown in at the appropriate time. Nice, easy, enjoyable read that keeps your attention. KG Love his (Mark Wayne McGinnis] writing. Period. Always a good story and plot but it's most often the wonderful way he portrays his characters that I love most. They always are genuine, good and evil. You hate the bad guys more and more just as you really root for the good guys. This was a fun, more local to Earth, than space tale of heroism and friendships across species that was a kick-in-the-pants adventure that seemed to get better and better as the story progressed. Also nice to have, what I felt, was a stand-alone book. I didn't see a need for a sequel. Too many book series out there right now. Thanks for a great time. Also loved Junket- Untamed Alien Worlds. Highly recommended.- BelleraphonCaptivating SciFi Space OperaOne of the best written and captivating scifi space opera novels I have read in a long time. Once I opened the cover I could not put it down. The Hidden Ship had no slow spots - this book keeps you going from the beginning to the very last page. Highly recommenced this book! Looking forward to reading other works by Mark Wayne McGinnis. Much thanks, sir!- KCBest Alien Invasion sci-fi BookBest alien invasion scifi book I have read in years. Mark Wayne McGinnis has not disappointed.
Searching for something to read my eyes lighted on the name McGinnis. Ah! I thought. An author I like! I even paid money for it. As with his other stories, this is one of those "Everyman" tales ( I mean that in the classic Greek sense). Invaded and defeated, a small group of people in Castle Rock, Colorado decide that one last rebellion is what they'll do. No one expects to survive, but along the way they find allies amongst their enemies and gather , from both camps, an army . . . and an audacious plan. I'm actually giving this only 4.5 stars for two reasons. One that Mr. McGinnis has succumbed to the stereotypical Lizard being and two, his use of "bemused" which seems to be the word du jour in science fiction these days. The word has the denotation of being puzzled or confused and the connotation of being vaguely amused. Either way, it's one of my pet peeves, though he only used it twice. All said, Lizards are better than Bugs and other creepy crawlies. The characters are engaging and the action is enough to keep the reader tuned in long after s/he should have gone to bed. Yeah. What the heck. 5 STARS!
The Hidden Ship was a lot of fun to write. Fun fact: the setting is Castle Rock, Colorado, where I live.... not the same Castle Rock (Maine)... the fictional town Stephen King uses as a backdrop for many of his novels.
Thank you Henry Kline for this generous review of The Hidden Ship:
"First, this is a complete story in one book. So satisfying. I would not have bought it if it was part of a series.
This is not just another humans vs. aliens tale. There are twists that make it stand out from the common. Unfortunately, I can't be more specific without spoiling your discoveries as you read.
I was always entertained. There's never a slow spot. If the author has any more standalone novels, I'll buy them."
No idea how to represent the military or it’s personnel
Without an accurate depiction of the military, it’s training practices, or the professionalism of its personnel, this story falls apart. In fact, as a veteran I was mildly insulted reading this book. The author tells us in one scene that the military trains soldiers not to think. That’s ridiculous and insulting. I was trained so that I could do my job reflexively, but military personnel are trained to always think. He gets many other things wrong, as well. The author would do well to do even a little research before writing about a career military member.
The story hopped along at a nice pace. It moved slowly in parts and picked up lots of speed in other parts, which kept it interesting for me.
There is a YouTube video set called aliens to stupid to exist, which discusses civilizations in movies, etc who as portrayed just are too stupid to exist. Conquering inhabited planets in order to colonize is usually a red flag for "too stupid to exist" and I was prepared to be disappointed with the book but the story managed to build stupidity into the aliens as a given and moves logically from there. I appreciated such a neat trick and it really held the story logic together neatly. I applaud the writer.
The human characters aren't required to be invincible, geniuses or even brave which is a nice switch. Instead like average humans they are required in a crisis to recognize extreme danger, not allow themselves to be paralyzed when desperate and to apply every bit of logic, every tool available and a purely human genius for at least inflicting maximum pain on an enemy when defeat is inevitable. It made the book feel much more realistic than a lot of books or movies.
With that framework and the writer throwing aside the convention that all allies and enemies are monolithic (stepford-like) blocs of good guys and bad guys, made it possible to enjoy the plot unfolding driven by characters that didn't have the greatest depth. For me the book was a lot of fun and still involved a "human" dimension to both alien and earth descended characters. It's a very cool book. I'd Like to see how the story evolves if it became a series. Character development, the impact of the fact of the invasion on society and the presence of aliens on planet would all be addressed for sure.

MWG. has. penned the second SYFY. novel in the Hidden Ship series. In this nivel the worst has happened. Earth has been invaded by Aliens. Aliens who desire total dehumanization using humans against humans. There are certain pockets that resist the Aliens and they patiently wait for the time they can take Earth back. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
From the get go this has been a really fun read. Based around pilot Brian, I’m not sure if the author described what he looks like but he seems to be a relatable character. Actually most of the characters are relatable.
As to some of the technical descriptions, sometimes it is difficult to picture.
Cow boy dressing reptilian aliens sounds a tad bit far fetched, yet comical, this is almost like a rom com, but really it’s an action adventure.
I really enjoyed this book! Mark Wayne McGinnis is one of the masters of science fiction storytelling! The plot keeps you engaged right from the start. The characters are well developed and easy to relate to. You won’t be bored and probably won’t be able to put it down!
Imagine an overwhelming force overtook your country or, as in this case, your world. Imagine! What would you do? What COULD you do? That's the question. In this story, McGinnis establishes a small rebel force CAN cause major change, even though circumstances rather forced other aliens to aid the human rebellion. And the best part for me...It has a happy ending.
All of Mike’s books are excellent and enjoyable read. I cannot Tell you how much I appreciate honest to goodness character development in the midst of a good action story. (Que the Avengers music?). As an aside, this book is a little like the movie Independence Day. If you liked that story this one is right up there.
What a great book! This work of art will not disappoint!
I love first contact stories. This one picks up a little after, but you don’t miss a thing. I love the characters- human and not. The story keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. It was a thrilling ending that summed things up nicely. The butler did it! Congrats to the author. Time well spent...
A fantastic book, well written and well edited. Just a great overall story, not too elaborate and not over technical. And call me old fashioned, but this book was just that. A BOOK. Not some 10-15 book series. That’s what Sci-fi should be like, more about the tale than the money. Thanks, MWM
I enjoyed the way the characters were developed and the way this small group had the courage to band together to save the earth from an alien 👽 invasion. The story moves along at a rapid pace with little to no filler. Lots of bloodshed and heros. I will read more of this author's books.
Great story with excellent characters. I had a hard time putting this book down. Don't worry the wife made sure I did my chores. This is an excellent read that I whole heartedly can endorse.
Man that was awesome. I don't suppose we could see the further adventures of Captain Polk in a follow on book? I enjoyed the action, just like all that crazy action packed fighting in the Scrapyard series. Thanks for a GoodRead.
Saving rule changes whenever the author felt like it. Series of new species having complete planetary environment failures at the same time is simply contrived and unbelievable. Should be a fantasy.
Intergalactic invasion, except half the aliens side with earthlings rather than be terminated themselves. Silly, flat, and ultimately boring. Not recommended.
I think McGinnis set out to write a fun read. His villains have a comical look to them, there are some funny names to things, some of the dialog is meant to evoke a laugh, etc. To be sure, the subject matter is serious, but the tone is sort of light. But I think he was only partially successful.
Probably the main way to make a fun book is by starting with fun characters, but McGinnis didn't even try. The main character is just the stock hero, ex-military variety, that is there in most of these self-published military sci-fi books. Nothing is done to make him stand out, yet he is 3 dimensional compared to the other main characters who consist of a name (each) and just nothing else. Well, one is a native American and the other is the brother of the love interest, so that distinguishes them from each other. The love interest is also a name, but she comes with a kid and a great body. Oh, and she is very courageous, as are they all, but again that is just a stock trait in these kinds of books. I thought the villains were a bit more interesting than the good guys.
The plot isn't bad but isn't great either. It's sort of part John Ringo's Posleen Wars (where crocodile-like aliens invade the earth) and part Independence Day. A group from a small town rebels against the aliens tyrannical regime. They admittedly don't have much of a plan but through courage, determination, and by virtue of being the heroes of the book, they stumble their way to victory.
The echoes of John Ringo are evocative, not derivative, so that's good, but on the other hand it's not nearly as creative or as funny as Ringo. The Hidden Ship is a good, mildly entertaining summer read. I would recommend it as long as expectations aren't too high. In other words, it's not an "amazing"book despite the 5 star ratings, but it's okay.
Edit: after posting the above review, I read the first page of the other reviews here on Gooddreads. It seemed to me that the negative reviewers failed to "get" that a lot of the book is supposed to be funny, so they misunderstood a lot of it. I don't know if that's their fault, or the fault of the book for not being funny enough!
Very good story here. Of course, I'm partial to space related tales, so that could be part of my enjoyment here, but I think any scifi fan would enjoy this one. I also enjoy stories where the humans get a leg up on alien invaders, so how can you loose when you have two of my favorite things in a single story? Also, this one appears to be a self contained story, not part of a series, which is rare these days, but (in my opinion) makes the story that much better, so there's that going for it as well. Of course, if there are more in this universe, I'd not hesitate to read them, but it's nice to have a complete story in one book for a change.
Mr. McGinnis this was a fun read. I had difficulty keeping my mind on tasks when I did take a short break. I've read it through in two long sittings in a few hours. I'm so thankful for good editing! As you can see, I'm not so good.
Respect for others should transcend humanity to all- sentient known or unknown.
I know I'm not reading Shakespeare here. If I've enjoyed the smooth mechanics of reading as well as the plot it's a 5 star 🌟 from me.
Earth has been invaded by reptilian aliens. The conquering went quickly. Now it's time to fight back.
To be honest, I lost interest in this before I hit the halfway mark. I wanted to see what would happen in the book enough to keep reading, but I knew I wouldn't be continuing the series. I found the ending rushed, and a bit trite.
And really, did she need to be fat and having a gas issue? Did that actually serve any purpose whatsoever?
A traditional story of Earthlings invaded by 7 foot lizards and then eventually bested by a ragtag group of courageous but amazingly clever human rebels. The book was entertaining and reasonably well written but the plot was fairly predictable. In short, it was not bad but not particularly memorable either.
Mistakes: I found one early on in the book. Didn’t find anything else. Plot: Alien invasion has happened. This is a rather simplistic rebellion that goes without a hitch. Characters: The Mc is able to ignore getting shot twice. Nothing really to any of the characters. 7/10
Even with the outcome predetermined, we needed the how. The how was really good, could have toned the language down a bit. Nothing I haven’t heard or said but I think it has a lowering effect on communal standards. Great read and recommend it highly. On to the next one.
As a retired USAF command pilot with over 1500 combat sorties logged, I especially enjoyed the ruff and tumble of the combat scenarios. Learning how to fly one of those Crushers would have been fun. Buy the book! It's an enjoyable read. Just remember that in sci-fi anything is possible.
This was a pretty silly story, but I stuck it out. The ending was very predicable. In fact, the first time I listened, I actually fell asleep toward the end. I had to go back to finish it later, but I didn't think I missed much. Might appeal to tween boys. James Patrick Cronin did a fine job with the narration of the audiobook.
Awsum book and story, great action packed drama. Couldn't put it down until I read it all. Would love to continue reading the next book when it comes out.
And enjoyable read, fun characters, fast-paced and enjoyable. A well done self-contained book. Has everything action adventure aliens romance you will enjoy this book, can be read in one or two sittings. It is highly enjoyable.
