The Cloud: a YA Dystopian Sci Fi Novel

Rate this book
Teenager Evelyn has no reason to think she's anything but ordinary. She's programmed not to.

So when she and seven other interns at a space company wake up confused and naked on a newly-discovered planet, Evelyn has no idea she's been sent there for a reason. Or what that reason could be.

Compared to oxygen-depleted Earth the new planet is teeming with life, and not all of it is friendly... As Evelyn and the interns struggle to survive it begins to look like there's no going home. They're going to have to find a way to live on the planet. But something is hunting them... A digital entity calling itself 'the Mind' is bent on killing the interns, and on bringing Evelyn into its lair. It seems to know something about her no one else does – not even her.

In her effort to keep her friends safe from the Mind Evelyn stumbles upon a terrifying experiment that's been waiting just for her. It soon becomes clear that there's no hiding from the Mind. If she and the interns want to stay alive on this planet they're going to have to face it head on. But even the Mind is merely a pawn in the hands of the true powers that be, and Evelyn is starting to think she is too.

I walk the world of words and frolic in the forests of fiction, I paddle the pools of prose and dance on the dunes of diction.

I like to write almost as much as I like to procrastinate. I co-own a vegan cheese business with my very beautiful girlfriend. I used to be an ESL teacher in Viet Nam. Before that I baked bread for a living. Way before that I was a chef. A very long time ago I went to a Montessori school (but only until the 7th grade, which was also my final year of school). Instead of going to high school I stayed home and smoked weed and played computer games. Eventually I realized my life was slowly imploding and that I had to get out into the world a bit and, you know, find myself. Which I did. Turns out I'm really antisocial, I get bored easily, I'm an excellent cook, a halfway-decent guitar player, a terrible person to talk to when you are sad, and a serial monogamist. My favorite board game is Scrabble.

I was born and raised in South Africa, and still live in my hometown of Stanford nestled between sea and mountain where the air is crisp and the views spectacular. When I can I like to climb one of the nearby mountains and drink from the streams that cascade down their crags. This is where I get my inspiration to live, to smile, and to write.

I'm not usually one for Sci-Fi but here I am writing a book review 3 days after purchasing it. The Cloud's initial ambiguity was a great hook and a much-needed calm before the storm that was, well, everything after page 10.

The Cloud is action-packed with a refreshing plot, believable characters, and a writing style that often dipped its toes into the downright philosophical.

Okay let me start by saying I'm always apprehensive of self-pubbed authors, especially first timers, but this one really surprised me. I was immediately hooked and honestly couldn't stop reading until my eyes started hurting. There were a few moments where I was like 'Ah, I know where this is going' but then BAM, I was proved delightfully wrong. Plenty of red herrings in this book. I love being kept guessing. There were also some pretty thoughtful themes and difficult decisions for the MC, and I must say I'm still not sure I agree with some of the MC's choices. Kinda on the side of the villain, though I didn't care for (neutral pronoun to avoid spoiler) one bit. Great read, exceeded expectations, and I look forward to seeing future works from the author!

I read a draft version of this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. Good science fiction transports you to another place and this book did just that. It deals with a wide array of excellently chosen themes and brings them together elegantly and with lightness. I hope there are more novels on the way!

Wow, that was amazing. I didn't expect the complexity of the story and I was very pleasantly surprised.

So a rich tech giant offers an internship to 8 very smart and accomplished teens. On the tour of the place, instead of demonstrating the rich, he sends them through the wormhole on a habitable planet. He thinks that we are beyond help, so he hopes that they can start anew. When they wake up far in the future, the planet where they landed it's nothing but trouble. Weird things keep happening and people are dying left and right.

The story is well thought out, and totally unpredictable. You think you know where the story is going to go, but it moves in a totally different direction, and you are like, OMG what just happened.

It's a very complex ad the writing is amazing. I couldn't put it down till the last page and the story is in mind all the time.

And I have to say the ending was just ... perfect.
