Never in the history of the Western Church has Christianity been so wed to power and politics. Evangelicalism has become synonymous with one political party, one economic theory, one approach to immigration, one attitude about firearms. Political strategists understand that galvanizing conservative Christians into exercising their political clout can spell victory for their candidates. How different from the church that exploded across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa in the century after the resurrection of Jesus! How foreign to the contemporary Middle Eastern, Asian and African church that flourishes in the face of horrible persecution! How contrary to the Beatitudes and the other teachings of Jesus! This book explores what Jesus and the early apostles believed and taught about the irresistible power of weakness and humility. It is not a call to political or religious passivity. Instead, it is a plea to return to the tenets that served as the foundation for the Church of Jesus Christ. It is an invitation to abandon the pursuit of temporal power and passionately follow Jesus into a life that radiates His glory and beauty. It is an exploration of what Jesus meant when He refused to deliver Paul from his thorn in the flesh and instead asserted "My grace is sufficient for you."
I'll start by admitting my bias. Robert just happens to be my dad. But I've seen the fruit that led to the making of this work. I've watched a man leave behind the trappings of legalism and self-righteousness I watched him trade those things for self sacrifice and grace. I've walked with him while my mom had cancer or while he was dealing with class accusations that threaten to ruin his legacy in the business he had spent over 30 years building. All of it's true. It's true in the sense of absolute truth but it's also true because he's walked those roads, and he has shed those tears. All of the relationships that he mentioned are real. And Western culture it's rare to see such dedication to relationship. He has invested heavily in those relationships with people who are broken and people who are outside the faith and loved and walked with them well. There's truth in these pages I hope that you'll take the time to look for it. Because it can be life-changing
