Folks didn't like strangers in Bulwark.
Bulwark, Georgia has always been...an unusual town to say the least.
People had no business traveling in that direction. Strange stories had always come from that end...
JB Stratton, born and raised in Bulwark, always expected to live his entire life on his father's peanut farm.

But then...something happened.

Something that completely changed the direction of everything he thought he knew.
"It's the Knowing. It's that feeling when you gonna meet your someone special."
Ellie moved to town and instantly he knew that she was going to be his something special - and much to his delight, she felt the same.
"I knew it from the minute I saw you. You were meant for me."
However, JB always knew he wasn't good enough - his destiny was a peanut farm and hers was so much more.

Will he find the courage to speak up or will he let everything drift away?

A wonderful addition to the Bulwark series!

After reading the first novel, I was very curious about a few of the side characters (especially grumpy and widowed JB) and I loved how Lunden chose to explore JB's backstory in this novel.

We focus mainly on JB's younger days and his pursuit of Ellie, a girl who he thought was far above him.

He was truly a sweet character. I loved his character arc and was cheering for him the entire time.

I do wish the strangeness of Bulwark played a larger role in this one - so much potential for subplots and distractions, but they were largely unaddressed in favor of the love story.

Which, I truly enjoyed... just with such a rich setting, I wanted more page space devoted to the weird and wonderful!

Guess I'll have to read more of this anthology to find out about the mysterious Bulwark then!

The Knowing: A Bulwark Anthology
By: Brit Lunden

REVIEW ☆☆☆☆☆
Welcome back to Bulwark, GA. I was here very recently with the sheriff, but this time the focus is on JB, the old man who lives where the injured couple were taken. His wife, Ellie, died 5 years ago, and he misses her terribly. In The Knowing, JB remembers how he met Ellie, etc. It's a story of memory. When he first saw her, JB felt like he already knew her. That's The Knowing. Have you ever felt that way, like a stranger is someone you know well? I have, and it's a strange thing for certain. Some people are meant to be despite all obstacles, so there was no stopping the relationship between JB and Ellie. This story is touching, and it's magical. You'll understand better after you read it. The ending, well, at first, I didn't like it, but I later realized it was perfect. I highly recommend this short story. Interestingly, also, the Bulwark stories take place on the same day from different points of view. I like that, and it's very clever. Can't wait to read the next story!

The Knowing, the feeling that you are going to meet someone special.

Brit Lunden recaps the happenings from the first novella, Bulwark, and I always like that refresher. Sometimes it’s a long time between readings.

We met JB in Bulwark and now, his mood turns to the past and the love of his life, Ellie. He had known he would never leave Bulwark. Farm work it will be, not a football hero, even though he was that good, Bear Bryant wanted to recruit him. I love that addition to the story. I don’t believe there is a soul alive in Alabama who doesn’t know who Bear Bryant is.

So not what I was expecting, but it turned into a wonderful tale of love, second chances and maybe a little bit of magic.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of The Knowing by Brit Lunden.

This is a well-written love story that kept my heart pounding as I read it. I can't say why without giving anything away. I will say that after all the angst, sorrow, and suffering, I liked the end... I liked the end a lot. This book is part of an anthology that can be read in order or as a stand-alone. This is the second book I've read by this author and I greatly enjoyed it.

The Knowing is the first volume of the Bulwark Anthology. What made me want to read the Bulwark anthology series is that the cover of the designs are so rare, being extremely different, which I think that's a bonus point in standing a paperback series out from any other books. Then of course the blurb on the back was a must read for me. Occasionally I love to explore different types of books , I'm always on the lookout for those different types of books that I normally read. The Knowing is a wonderful fiction story, with the exception of the great football coach Bear Bryant and the football draft, all the names and places, and incidents are either the product or Brit Lunden's imagination or if, real, used fictionously. Once again the first lines grabbed my attention and I was bursting to read on. The first few lines. JB closed the door gentle, glad to have the place to himself again. Sheriff Clay Finned had taken the injured couple to hospital. Britt Lunden is a prolific author who has written over fifty books in assorted genres under different pen names. I recommend all of the Bulwark anthology collection.

I read Bulwark, the first book in this series and really liked it. The plot was dark and mysterious, with genuine characters. It’s where I was introduced to JB so I guess I was expecting The Knowing to feel similar.

As JB pondered the past and his love for his wife, Ellie, I got this warm feeling inside. I realized the plot was going to be about life, paths and choices. All the best ingredients for a love story. And what a great love story it turned out to be.

I read this even faster than the first book and had such a great time. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this exciting series.

I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.

‘How dare that woman say his beloved was a witch?’

For a famous author of children’s books to take on the nom de plume Brit Lunden in order to switch to adult novels, it seems impolite to praise her as Carole P. Roman. But the lady knows this world of literature and has written guides to assist new authors in the intricacies of Indieworld publishing, and she includes that beautiful photograph of her warm countenance on this site, offering those of us who have followed her rise in stature permission to share the ‘secret’. BULWARK was her first book of adult fiction and formed the nidus for the BULWARK ANTHOLOGY. And now she contributes Book 1 of that multi-author work – THE KNOWING.

It would not seem to be an easy step to go from children’s fantasy to adult paranormal thriller, but Brit/Carole is so polished a writer that she has made the entry into the 'adults only' realm with ease and significant success. She offers a synopsis that brings clarity to the plot without spoiling the dramatic events of the ending.

‘JB Stratton is alone in the world, and all he has left are the memories of his beloved Ellie. Dirt poor JB and wealthy Ellie feel an instant connection that is as intense and primal as the blood red earth of their home. Unseen roots connect them, pulling them into an impossible relationship. Will the memories of past lives help or hinder the path of their love? This is the story of a town isolated from the rest of the world where the impossible becomes plausible, and logic is determined by reality.’

Sequels – or additions to an original – either succeed or fail depending on the mode of progression of the author. This new novella is a continuation of the novella BULWARK and is cleverly subtitled ‘JB Stratton’s Story – and indeed it is the view of other folks in the town of Bulwark. It is a fine story with enough emphasis on football to signal a new sector of readers and a beautiful romance that sustains the author’s ability to please the senses and desires. The story is excellent, but the glow of her polished prose is what makes this scintillating book memorable.

Tension, fine character building, unexpected frights, and bizarre entries into that unknown place we call paranormal – they are all here and beautifully developed for a short novella. Said before, said again - Looks like we will be hearing more from ‘Brit Lunden.’ Move over Michael Phillip Cash – it runs in the family!

JB had known from the moment his eyes first met Ellie's that they were meant to be. His grandma had called what he experienced the knowing. He was drawn to her beyond anything he had before experienced. She was a rich Yankee, he a poor peanut farmer with only the promise of an unfulfilled dream as a football star. He was talented, but was certain he was trapped, forever destined to remain a farmer. Ellie wouldn't listen as he told her to find someone better, she wanted only him, and would even defy her parents for his love. Fate, however, had other plans for the lovers.

The Knowing - JB Straton's Story - is volume one in Brit Lunden's, A Bulwark Anthology. It is a beautifully written love story encompassing the present, past, and even past lives. It is a romance, with a hint of supernatural. It is well-written with a level of area building and character development often unseen in shorter books. It was easy to read this is one sitting, the story is sweet, intriguing, and sometimes moving. It has certainly piqued my interest in other books by this author, especially the Bulwark, which this anthology stems from. Intrigue, obstacles, fate, and supernatural combine to present a gripping tale bound to satisfy anyone who enjoys a character orientated, well-constructed read. There are little touches throughout which caught my interest, and have no doubt referenced events in the main book. I thought the conclusion of the book made the perfect ending to a tightly-knit tale. I look forward to seeing more work from this author.

This novella combines several genres. A romance tinged with the paranormal in an eerie setting provides the backdrop. Two lovers lose track of each other but are then suddenly thrown back into each other's lives. Lunden paints a vivid picture giving the reader plenty of details and intriguing character descriptions. Bulwark, Georgia is isolated and hidden, the perfect setting for the paranormal. What seems impossible becomes reality. A short read that will find impossible to put down. Recommended by fans of romance, fantasy, paranormal, and thrillers.

Love these books!

This is the third anthology I've read by Brit Lunden and frankly, they are little gems!!! I particularly loved this one for the development Lunden exhibited in her characters...careful, meticulous, thorough. The reader rapidly comes to understand what makes her characters "tick," and so, gets a better picture of what drives them as the action unfolds.

Read all three of Lunden's Bulwark anthologies. You won't be disappointed.

Having read the Bulwark first, I met JB for only a mere minute. Not knowing anything about him when he helps out a woman and her husband after they had their children torn from them by..(well you have to read to find that out in Bulwark). The knowing opened up the insites about JB and his life. Getting to know him and his wife Ellie was just a Romeo and Juliet kinda love story. Was well written and flowed like a graceful waterfall. Ahhh such a beautiful told story! I am not a fan of romance but hell I wanted more. I didnt think of this book as a romance book just a story of how two people fell in love and the world around them never mattered. So many twists and every turn got me. I was lost at first when out of the blue came the war, when it was just a beating from Ellie's brother and friends, whom wanted JB to stay away from her. But then I was found when he came to after having blacked out. Then lost again when Ellie just disappeared from JB's life and he morned for her every waking day till they met again a few years later and all was explained. Have to read to find out why she was missing for so long a time. Hehe! Amazing story. I truely loved it! Great job Brit/Carole. Thanks for the ARC..my voluntary review for such a great book! On to the next book in the Anthology: The Illusion. By DJ Cooper.

This is the 2nd book in the Bulwark series. It is actually book 1 as Bulwark was the prequel. We get the backstory on JB Stratton. He was the man that took care of the crash victims in Bulwark until the Police arrived.

I am enjoying this series of books. The books are very short so listening to them in one setting is not hard to do. This Audiobook is less then 2 hours long. Brit Lunden puts just enough of a creep factor into the books to keep you wanting more. Dan McGowan is a great narrator. I think he really brings this story to life with his interpretation of the the emotions of the characters. I can't wait to get through the rest of this series.

Wow. This is a beautiful yet eerie love story that had me teary-eyed… in a good way. I loved the ending, although I won’t give details because I don’t want to spoil it. Still, WOW! The story started out with a creepy vibe that I thought would persist, and while it definitely stayed a bit, the story was more beautiful than frightening. JB and Ellie have a most romantic love story! I can’t wait to read more of the Bulwark Anthology volumes, and hope that those volumes not written by Brit Lunden are just as wonderful.

The Knowing is a sweet love story. After reading the original Bulwark book, I enjoyed getting to know some of the characters a bit better and uncover some of the past. The extra mysterious elements added some more intrigue to what could have been a typical high school romance, it left me wanting to delve into the paranormal aspects of town and find out more.

Enjoyed getting to know more about JB Stratton and Ellie. The almost Romeo and Juliet undertones, were a nice touch with JB being from the wrong side of the tracks so to speak then to them experiencing things together that normal people didn't. And the ending! Ah! Must read!

Hello Ya’ll,
Welcome back to the small town of Bulwark, Georgia Last time I introduced you to the Sheriff Clay Finnes, of Bulwark
Bulwark was the prequel. We get the backstory on JB Stratton. He was the man that took care of the crash victims in Bulwark until the Police arrived.
JB’s wife, Ellie, died five years ago, and she was his everything, The love of his life. The Knowing, JB takes us back to the beginning, when first met Ellie.
JB Stratton was completely smitten with Ellie, like nothing he had ever experienced before. He was a starry- eyed football player with an unfulfilled dream of stardom.
A southern Georgia poor peanut farmer, he did have chance in a hand basket with her being a rich Yankee and all.
Miss Ellie captivated him, he felt an mesmerizing gravitation towards her like nothing before.
Something his Grandma had called what he was feeling… The Knowing!
Ellie only had eyes for JB, even if that meant going against her parents. This fated couple will see their share of obstacles, in this intriguing, creative book.
This heartwarming, twisty with a little supernatural read, with well developed three dimensional characters.
The authors ability to create a stunning storyline within a shorter page count book, is no easy feat. That just shows you that Brit Lunden is an amazing talented author. It takes seamless narration, along with incredible plot pacing to accomplish this.
I loved reading this impeccably written tale, and look forward to reading more from this very talented author.

I would like to say up front that I enjoyed this short novel so much that I went in and purchased Bulwark-the original that started this anthology! I still have 2 more in this anthology to read and will definitely be purchasing the rest of them! Short and well written stories!

Soul mates from different walks of life destined by fate to be separated-but never far from each others minds. JB Stratton a Georgia boy, the son of a peanut farmer, sees Ellie, the daughter of a rich Northerner the first day she attends class.

JB is accepted at Alabama on a full football scholarship and promises Ellie he will return to only her--she never returns his letters. Meanwhile JB has recurring nightmares where Ellie saves him.

They do get together and live happily ever after until Ellie dies--JB lives alone. Will he again be reunited with his soul mate?

Brit Lunden (aka Carole P Roman) is a master story teller who will keep you reading and guessing!

I received this book in the mail (along with 2 others from this anthology-did I win them?I have no idea--It was sent to me for enjoyment and a possible review-All opinions are mine and mine alone!

This is a great addition to Bulwark. It gives an account of the beginning to the continuing love of JB and Ellie even after Ellie's death. JB is a key character from Bulwark. Knowing is better appreciated if Bulwark is read before this book.

This is a very intriguingly different horror-type "quick-read" series. Each novella is quite short, yet packed with frightening weirdness. This series is a fictional small town "tucked away" in Georgia, where dark unusual 'sightings" appear. Sightings one hopes do not become his or her reality!

The book is fairly well written and the characters are realistic, for the most part. The scenes are quite well defined and one can visualize them.

This novella "came together" as it progressed, but for awhile i felt slightly "lost". I feel the reader could have stayed more connected with the story if there wasn't such an abrupt separation of the two key individuals.

I feel it was still a touching story and kept the reader' curiosity up.

*I was gifted this book with no pressure to post a positive review. This is my honest review.

Written by Brit Lunden, this is another story in the Bulwark Anthology, and I like this more than Bulwark, maybe because, while this has a bit of paranormal in the story, it is really a sweet love story.

JB, the man who came to the aid of the couple in Bulwark, is the star of this story, which is about his love with his wife Ellie. This was such a sweet romance, and other than some visions, was very real life and had it’s very real things that they went through.

Again, this story is just too short to go into any details without ruining it, but this is a wonderful little love story, and the ending really just, was the sweetest thing. Particularly because, unlike with the other story, this one didn’t have two endings, just one very satisfying ending.

If you’d like a sweet, short romance, this is a really great choice.

I thought The Knowing was a lovely romance with just a hint of paranormal. I enjoyed the main character JB, and his love for Ellie was sweet and special.

I listened to the audiobook of The Knowing. My review includes my thoughts on the book overall, as well as the experience of listening through audio.

The story surprised me a bit, as I had listened to the book Bulwark, a very paranormal story, and was expecting a lot of spooky happenings in this story. The Knowing though is more of a sweet, lovely romance that lasts the ages, and has a bit of a paranormal twist.

The Knowing is set in Bulwark, a town filled with spooky, mysterious events. JB Stratton grew up in Bulwark and expects to live out his days on his family’s farm. But then, Ellie walks into his life. New to town, Ellie and JB meet and experience the knowing.

“It’s that feeling when you gonna meet your someone special.“

JB struggles with his love for Ellie. He is plagued by his doubt of himself. He feels he is not worthy of Ellie, but when he is ready to commit, everything falls apart. Ellie disappears and JB is left with wisps of moments where he feels she is there but is unable to catch her. Will their love be enough to reconnect them?

The main character, JB was such a delight for this story. We meet him in Bulwark as the grumpy curmudgeon who is widowed, so it was wonderful to meet his younger self and understand his backstory. I really enjoyed his transition as we move through his life.

The narrator is Dan McGowan, the same narrator of Bulwark, and I again enjoyed his performance. He does a nice job with both male and female characters, and I liked the emphasis he uses as he expresses the story through his narration. I enjoyed the audio version and would recommend it for readers that enjoy the audio format of a book. The listening time was fairly short at 1 hour and 40 minutes, so it’s a quick, easy book to enjoy.

To Read or Not To Read:
I would recommend The Knowing to readers that enjoy romance stories with a bit of paranormal themes. This is the first book in the Bulwark Anthology Series, however, there is a prequel in the series titled Bulwark. I feel that The Knowing can be read as a stand-alone story, however, Bulwark was a fun book, and if you enjoy The Knowing, you should check out Bulwark by Brit Lunden too.

I was provided a gifted audio copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.

My full review of this book will post to my blog on 4/23/20. All of my reviews can be found at https://shejustlovesbooks.com/all-boo...

This was an interesting addition to the anthology. The first book (Bulwark) had a fractured fairy tale feel to it. This one is about a love that time could not deny. JB and Ellie come from opposite sides of the road but their connection won’t be denied. Normally, I’m not that into romance stories but this has enough other stuff going on with it that I enjoyed it. Plus, it was short. This story happens in the same town as Book 1 and actually starts with an event from Book 1. Yet this story works as a stand alone.

JB has more page time and more character depth than Ellie. So I would have liked things to be a bit more balanced. Ellie could be almost any woman, she’s so bland. JB works on his parent’s farm and goes to school. So he’s got almost no free time. What little free time he has, he uses for football and eventually Ellie. I liked that the story gave him something more, even though this created conflict with his dad. His mom has almost no page time and I can’t recall if she gets to talk or not. (Again, a little more balance would have been good).

In the end, things turn out well. This is a Happily Ever After tale (for those that need that in romance stories). The love through the ages and dream-like flashes to the past kept me interested in the story. 4/5 stars.

The Narration: Dan McGowan did a good job narrating this story. I liked his young man voice for JB – perfect fit. His female voice for Ellie was good too. While there were few other characters, each one had a distinct voice. The pacing was good and there were no tech issues with the recording. 5/5 stars.

In this return to fictional Bulwark, Georgia, we first see JB as a 70-something-year-old man in the present time. He helps a couple who have been injured. While they wait for help to arrive, the woman sees the picture of his wife and accuses her of being a witch. After they leave, this prompts JB to have a reminiscence about their relationship. The novella takes place mostly fifty-plus years ago. JB and Ellie meet on her first day of school in Bulwark. She's a wealthy northern girl and he's the son of a poor peanut farmer, but there's an instant attraction and what JB's grandmother calls *the knowing* between them. A secret relationship develops, but when he goes off on a full scholarship to college, she doesn't reply to his letters.

It's a very short, sweet, yet poignant novella, depicting a brief period in the early relationship between JB and Ellie. I like the added paranormal elements, both the concept of *the knowing*, where men especially will know when they meet the woman they are supposed to be with, and the Civil War dreams. The idea of romance across the highs and lows of social strata is not uncommon, of course, but this story had an added resonance with these young people who seemed not only to share this current incarnation but a past one as well. The ending was simply beautiful.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Brit Lunden yet again writes a fascinating read in her book, The Knowing. It is the first installment from the series called The Bulwark Anthology. Readers are brought to Bulwark, Georgia, a town wrapped in mystery and separated from the rest of civilization.
I have to admit that I do not normally read this genre but I really did enjoy The Knowing. It was nice to be find something new and unique to read. I found the story of JB and Ellie was intriguing. I liked the opposites attract of the tale and wondered throughout if they will be able to fight to be together. It was quite the adventure to be taken back to Bulwark. The book was romantic, magical, mysterious and suspenseful. There are a few scenes that was a little spooky and creepy that made me think a little bit.
I had the pleasure of listening to the audio version of this book. Dan McGowan is a great job bringing this story to life. His performance was perfect and entertaining. I believe he narrated it just the way the author was meant to be read. It is only a couple of hours long and I had no problem to continuously until I finished to the end in one day.
I am giving The Knowing four and a half stars. I would love to read more of the Bulwark Anthology, as well as, books by Brit Lunden in the future. I recommend it for readers who enjoy paranormal romance.
I received this book from the publisher. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Bulwark- a wall or stockade that protects or sometimes hides the truth from the outside world.

Bulwark, Georgia, isolated, hidden. Who knows what strange things can happen when the rest of the world can't see you? JB Stratton is alone in the world, and all he has left are the memories of his beloved Ellie. Dirt poor JB and wealthy Ellie feel an instant connection that is as intense and primal as the blood red earth of their home. Unseen roots connect them, pulling them into an impossible relationship. Will the memories of past lives help or hinder the path of their love? Based on the original novella Bulwark, by Brit Lunden, The Knowing continues the story of a town isolated from the rest of the world where the impossible becomes plausible, and logic is determined by reality.

This book follows the story of an older gentleman who played a small role in the original book. I enjoyed discovering more about JB's past and how he met his wife. I fell in love with the characters.
This one broke my heart it was sweet and so enjoyable. The love story between JB and Ellie was central to the story and although they had hardships it was simple soul mate love a beautiful read.
This book is short, but it's still a complete and well written story.
Highly recommend reading this and all of the series!!!

In The Knowing, two high school kids from opposite backgrounds feel an instant connection - a knowing- that they are meant to be together. Everyone else doesn't see it that way. Ellie's big brother orders JB to stay away. JB's father disapproves of Ellie's wealthy family, and her folks aren't thrilled that she wants to date a poor farmer's son. It seems like a typical story of star-crossed teenage lovers, except for the intense dreams of a shared past that they both experience. Do those dreams and the odd sense that tells them when the other is near prove that they belong with each other? Most of the action in this story takes place over 50 years before the events of Bulwark, showing that strange things have been happening in that small town for a very long time.

Being book 1 in the anthology series that follows the initial novella, The Knowing aims to bring us a little closer to some of the characters featured...one in particular, JB Stratton. You see, we come to know him after he is involved with a couple that has had a car crash...or maybe it's a car stall since it was in water, well not really water, but, okay I'm getting ahead of myself. JB lives in a cabin in the somewhat remote corners of Bulwark. He is the lucky soul in the vicinity of a couple's accident when they stumble from their disabled vehicle looking for safety. Thing is...they have a strange story to tell, and upon their removal from his property, yes, I said removal, JB's world starts to spin in a familiar yet unexpected direction.

Once upon a time, JB Stratton was a married man. The love of his life, Ellie, was taken from him all too soon...and yet he is secure in the knowledge, in THE KNOWING, that one day they will be together again....and again...and again...and again. Their souls are so entwined, even death can not keep them apart. This story is their story, and it's traumatic, tender, touching, and beautiful...but again, not without its despair. They have tough times...perhaps more than other couples seeing how they are linked through time...and they have their obstacles (aside from death itself), but they never give up. They constantly stay on the search for one another even when it seems it isn't their time, even while living their day to day lives as most of us do. Their final meeting in this world (for now) will bring a tear to your eye, but also an unexpected smile for YOU know that one day they'll meet again.

An interesting read and wonderful first addition to what seems to be an anthology with much promise.

'The Knowing' is the first anthology containing a novella from the Bulwark series. It tells the story of JB Straton and Ellie. You should definitely read the first book before this short story or you'll be confused about things and people that are referenced in the novella. Even though it was under 100 pages long, I thought this was a quick and fun read. I liked getting to know a little bit about JB and Ellie and their lives. The story is told from the third person point of view, which if you read my reviews, isn't one of my favorite writing styles. I always prefer the first person POV, and this novella was no exception. I think I would've connected to the characters a lot easier and quicker if it had been done in the first person. Even though I didn't wholly like the writing style, the rest of the story was well written with complex characters, a great setting, and an interesting plot line. I'd definitely recommend this book to fans of fantasy, paranormal, thriller, mystery, romance, and short stories.

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

The Knowing is part of the Bulwark anthology and you do need to read in order or evern read them all as they are all very much stand alone stories, even though characteres are in The Knowing we met in Bulwark, this is a very differnt tale.
This is a tale of romance – JB and Ellie are from differernt backgrounds knowing that they cant be toethger yet they are destined to. This story is about JB revisiting memories of him and Ellie in their younger years how they tried to be together but yet due to social staus it would not happen until much later.
This was a different pace to ‘Bulwark’ and there wasn;t much of the creepy paranoraml in this one, it was more a love story, but yet I really enjoyed JB’s backstory – he came across as a contankerous grummpy old man in the last book so this was a different look at him.
The audio again was unablrisges to the ebook but it was crisp and clear and I really enjoyed the narrator.
Once again I cant wait to see what in store in the next book.
