A werewolf, a witch, and a vampire walk into a murder scene . . .

Sgt. Marilyn Jaye of Supernatural Oversight (the investigative unit for all things which bump a bit too much in the night) is having a frustrating day. What should have been a simple case of a murdered ghoul has spun entirely out of control. It's bad enough that she's getting distracted from her investigations by her unreasonable attraction to Henry, a young werewolf with a terrible case of PTSD (Post-Turn Stress Disorder), especially since every Tom, Fang, and Hairy (previously known as her sensible friends) tells her she's destined to be with him. Worse, her distraction allows a second murder victim to turn up, one of the gentlemanly Victorian vampires who lives in Highgate Cemetery. If that isn't enough, the vicious werewolf who attacked and turned Henry is still on the loose. London's creatures of the night seem to be in trouble, and it's her job to protect them.

Marilyn is determined to find the killer and the rogue wolf, but she'll need a lot of help. That will include her friends, Hanover (Henry's handsome Alpha and Marilyn's ex-lover) and Julius Beer (a vampire who watches over his distressed comrades in Highgate from his ornate mausoleum). Also alternately helping or annoying her are the other members of the S.O., including her powerful sorcerer boss, the eternal spirit of Romantic poet William Blake, her ex-NYPD partner, a pool (yes, an actual pool) of secretarial sirens, and an imp who's in love with a cat. Even Henry has to tag along. And they better solve the case soon, because the killer has made it clear that she's the next target.

This humorous, cross-genre paranormal mystery/urban fantasy/paranormal romance will make you fall in love with all of London's quirky supernatural residents.

Take your pick: paranormal fantasy, paranormal romance, paranormal mystery, it’s all here, wrapped up in a shell of humorous delight!

Katherine Gilbert’s UNEARTHLY REMAINS is an irreverent look at London where vampires, ghosts, werewolves, ghouls and witches all do their best to stay under the radar of humanity with the help of the Supernatural Oversight investigative unit.

For Sgt. Marilyn Jaye, the case of the murdered ghoul is about to change her life forever and everyone seems to know it but her and the prime suspect, an unhappy, newly minted werewolf with adjustment problems! It will take the heads of all the supernatural groups, along with her orgy-loving father to crack the case before Marilyn becomes either the next victim of murder or love!

Fun and slightly silly, this mystery is a brilliantly entertaining tale of the lighter side of things that go bump in the night!

I received a complimentary ARC edition from Katherine Gilbert!

Katherine Gilbert is a new author for me, but based on her Unearthly Remains (first book in the series of the sand name), I’m promising myself that we will become well acquainted. As the book’s blurb notes, “A werewolf, a witch, and a vampire walk into a murder scene . . .”. Frankly I was laughing as soon as I read that, but the novel no joke. Rather it truly is, quite simply, wonderful. Thriller, mystery, magic and so much more. This tale had just what I wanted and was well written and with a great plot and great cast of characters. Sgt. Marilyn Jaye, is perfectly crafted and her supporting cast is also superb. Add in the Supernatural Oversight (the “investigative unit for all things which bump a bit too much in the night”), and don’t even get me started on the concept of shifters suffering from PTSD (that’s Post-Turn Stress Disorder), but there’s a ghoul killer and rogue werewolf on the loose. Serious business to be taken care of! Serious enjoyment, too, to be had for we readers. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to book 2.

This is the first book that I have read by this author and I can wholeheartedly say that I am a fan for life and I can't wait to read more of her work .... She is an amazing author and I adored every second of this book!

I loved how the storyline drags you in from the moment that you start this book and you genuinely don't have any idea about what could happen next. I also loved that it was based in a version of the UK as a lot of the books I read are set in America and I loved one written in the country that I live in. The world that this author built was so imaginative and that added to the feeling of not know what could happen or what kind of creature you could bump Into.

The characters were absolutely amazing!!! So good that I loved them all and couldn't pick out a favourite even if I wanted to! The talent that this author shows in the creation and development of the characters astounds me.

I honestly cannot rate this book and this author's work highly enough and deserves more than 5*. I recommend that everybody reads this book and I guarantee that they will be as blown away as I was!!!

Like Gilbert's first book, Protecting the Dead, this book deals with a world of paranormal creatures existing clandestinely alongside the "real" world. The true strength of both books is the cleverness and creativity in creating the societies and modes of the paranormal creatures--their prejudices, civil structures, habits, and so on. But this book is at heart a mystery, which is more compelling than the romance plot, and so appeals to the lover of "who-dunnit" in us. The bonus, and quite clever, addition in this novel are the many references to historic places and people of old London, including literary greats who have managed to cling to this world in varying ways. In short, a fun and satisfying read.

Unearthly Remains by Katherine Gilbert is a wonderful story to read.
This is the 3rd book in a great series that I have absolutely loved reading.
I highly recomend this story to everyone who loves reading about the paranormal.
I fell in love with all her quirky characters. Vampires, angels, demons, werewolves/ panthers, ghosts, and many more fun and surprising creatures inhabit London.
This book is a great cross-genre paranormal mystery/urban fantasy/paranormal romance that will make you fall in love with all of London's supernatural residents.
Not only was it in my opinion well written, there was a touch of humour which was appreciated

I received this book from the author via StoryOrigin as a review copy for a fair and honest review and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

**** SPOILER ALERT ****
Werewolves, and Demons, and Vampires!! Oh My!! To paraphrase Lyman Frank Baum. This mystery was on par with any mystery written by a mainstream mystery author. There were more twists and turns than on a Unicorn's horn in this fast paced tale of mystery, mayhem, murder, discrimination, hatred, and love.
"Unearthly Remains" was my introduction to Gilbert's writing. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
I strongly encourage you to pick up a copy. I will definitely be looking forward to Marilyn and Henry's further adventures.
In the interest of transparency: I was given a free review copy of this book and I am voluntarily sharing this review. This is my own honest opinion.

I enjoyed the characters and creative ideas dealing with the supernaturals in this book, but every once in a while, overwriting and repetition got to me. If a few scenes had been tightened, the pace would have flowed better for me. I saw lots and lots of potential and unique fun, and there were plenty of tricky interactions between the characters that deepened their relationships even more. It was a fun, quick read for the weekend with characters that you cared about.

Packed full of weird and wonderful characters this is not just a murder mystery, this is a very paranormal murder mystery. The lead detective in this book is the daughter of a sex demon and a witch, the secretarial pool is just that, a pool, and the werewolves have a totally different way of challenging for the alpha position than in any other book I've read. Excellent entertainment and no cliffhangers, I hope to read more by this author.

This was an enjoyable read with a variety of novel characters. While I liked the idea of the strong independence woman lead, I didn’t like how gooey she got around Henry, even if she acknowledged she herself hated this feeling. I also got a bit tired of everyone commenting on the scent and their belonging together…a bit too much in the story. But overall, a fun creative universe and one I will probably visit again.

4 star story, 2 star writing

Fun story that gets bogged down in the analysis of the murder mystery. Some of the conjectures make no sense and confused the story tremendously. Overall a PG-13 plot which concludes nicely while leaving room for future series of stories. The characters are likeable and well developed.

Uniquely Fun

I was introduced to this book by the authors newsletter. I was surprised at how fast I got into it. It just drew me right in. A succubus who isn't is certainly different. Then the slightly different workings of this story's universe made it even better. You will love this book!

Took a little bit for me to get into it but once I did, I couldn't put it down. I really like the wide variety of characters. The author did a wonderful job describing the characters so that the reader felt like they understood why they did what they did.
