The Mother's Mistake

Rate this book
Everyone makes mistakes. But does everyone deserve to be forgiven?

She runs past the tinkling of children’s laughter that fills the park. Heart hammering, she reaches the riverbank, breath catching in her throat as her eyes take in the small body, tangled in the reeds, pale and lifeless.

Three years later.

Claire’s life is picture perfect. A new home in the countryside. A new-born baby. A doting husband by her side.

But behind closed doors, her life is falling apart.

And when a threatening note is posted through her letterbox, saying she doesn’t deserve her daughter, it’s clear that someone knows about her past…

Someone knows that Claire doesn’t deserve her perfect life. Someone’s going to do everything in their power to destroy it.

An atmospheric, chilling and absolutely unputdownable psychological thriller about a mother’s worst nightmare. Fans of K.L. Slater, Shalini Boland and The Girl on the Train will love the twists, turns and gasp-worthy shocks of this stunning debut from Ruth Heald.

A Terrific Psychological Thriller!

Claire and Matt have moved to the country into a cottage on the property of Ruth who is Matt's mother. They have a new two month old daughter named Olivia and they are trying to save money for a home of their own. Claire seems to be suffering from postpartum depression since she is not bonding properly with her baby and she appears to exhausted and very stressed all the time, unfortunately, Matt and Ruth don't seem to notice and Claire's symptoms continue to worsen. To make matters worse, Ruth never cleaned out the cluttered cottage before they moved in and Matt seems intimidated by his mother and she really appears to dislike Claire. Now, is Claire being paranoid? What about the noises she hears in the dead of night? Why does Ruth come into the house without knocking? What about some odd disturbances that occur only when Claire is alone? These are only a few of obstacles that Claire is facing and they come with a shadowy feeling of foreboding in herself and the reader. This is a very cleverly written book that has suspense in every chapter that will continue to build until it reaches a riveting climax!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Ruth Heald and love the way she incorporated so many twists and turns that I could not predict how this book would finally end. Fantastic way to keep the reader emerged and on the edge of their seat. There were some minor discrepancies within the story but it did not affect the storyline and also this was before the final editing. Do not hesitate to purchase this suspenseful novel or you will find yourself missing out on a really entertaining read!

I want to thank the publisher Bookouture and Netgalley for the opportunity of reading this ARC!

I highly recommend this exciting book and have given a rating of 4 Suspenseful 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Stars!!

𝔘𝔫𝔰𝔢𝔱𝔱𝔩𝔦𝔫𝔤. 𝔘𝔫𝔠𝔬𝔪𝔣𝔬𝔯𝔱𝔞𝔟𝔩𝔢. 𝔘𝔫𝔭𝔲𝔱𝔡𝔬𝔴𝔫𝔞𝔟𝔩𝔢.

Ruth Heald has written a dark disturbing thriller that had me suspicious of everybody. Claire, her husband Matt, and her infant daughter Olivia move to the country and take up residency in Matt’s family‘s cottage. Claires desire for a new idyllic life in the country is quickly derailed. Not only is her cottage full of her husband’s deceased grandmother’s belongings, but she is constantly under the scrutiny of her mother-in-law. When things start getting moved around and she begins hearing things in the night Claire becomes unsettled. Top that off with Claire struggling with postpartum depression, Claire is quickly becoming unhinged. So who is out to destroy Claire’s perfect life and her mind in the process? There is also a second storyline about a abused wife that appears to be completely disconnected.

This was a slow burner with an explosive ending! Heald’s addictive writing style completely sucked me into Claire’s claustrophobic life. For the most part I was very sympathetic of Claire’s circumstances. Being a mother is hard and never is quite as glorious as you imagined it to be before you have kids. Sleep deprivation, being responsible for a tiny human, the feedings, the changings, all the crying, and to be struggling with postpartum depression on top of that would put anyone on edge. As sympathetic as I was towards Claire I was also suspicious. Just what was Claire running from in her past? And how much of what was going on was reality and how much was a figment of Claire’s imagination? She was definitely not the only one I was suspicious of I was pretty much suspicious of every single character in the story. Everyone seem to have some kind of secret to keep and everyone acted suspiciously at one time or another. And then there was the second storyline that I knew was connected, but how?

The ending to this book was wild and unexpected, but it tied everything together so perfectly. I was pretty sure I knew The Who, but I certainly had no idea of the why. A well told perfectly plotted thriller that had me completely invested.

*** many thanks to Bookouture for my copy of this book ***

The Mothers Mistake by Ruth Heald - wow! This book was so addictive, I read it in 2 sittings - I just had to know where it was going. Even though I worked out who was doing all of this early on I still could not get enough of what was happening. I will absolutely be looking out for more books from this author.

Claire and Matt move from London to the country with their newborn baby Olivia for a fresh start. Matt is opening his own veterinarian practice and they move into Matts mothers cottage. Pretty soon after they move in Claire's life starts to become a living hell - strange things start happening, she feels she is being watched and her mother in law is a nightmare. Is she just being paranoid or is somebody really after her? Matt worries about her, especially as she has a history of depression and alcoholism. Being a new mum is hard, and she wonders if something is wrong with her. I figured out who the stalker was but not why. Saying that the ending was shocking and made me gasp.

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased.

3.5 ⭐️ rounded up to 4

Claire seems to have the picture perfect life, her loving husband Matt and their baby daughter Olivia. They have just moved to the country to be closer to Matt's parents. Matt is opening a new vets practice. Claire has a secret from her past but it comes back to haunt her. She's also finding it hard to bond with Olivia plus Matt's mother keeps interfering.

I felt the story took too long to unravel itself. We know Claire has several issues and is a bit unreliable as the narrator. There are a few red herrings but who can Claire trust? The end reveal certainly makes up for the slow start.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and the author Ruth Heald for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Claire and Matt are happily married but Claire is struggling with their new born baby......a tale seemingly oft told in psychological thrillers (you begin to wonder if anyone Isn’t suffering from PND) however in this book have to say the research into the condition paid off as the description of Claire’s emotions are very real and I gained an understanding of how dehabilitating, confusing and consuming this really is....
Moving on Claire and Matt have secrets and pasts and actually move back to the Oxford village where Matt’s are yet to be laid to rest, they move into Matts Nan’s cottage opposite his Mum and Dad.....Ruth, Matt’s Mum is wonderful, as a baddie, I just loved her and her sniffy ways and comments but she makes Claire’s life hell.....then things begin to happen, notes appear, things go missing, Claire meets a new friend who encourages her to ‘have a drink’ and things rapidly get out of hand, add to the mix a back story of harrowing and graphic marital abuse and the book is a perfect psychological chiller thriller, plenty of twists and as a reader I really wasn’t sure what was going to happen next, no ‘lax’ chapters where nothing happens and the story moves ever more swiftly to a set of intense endings where all circles meet up
A really good read, had me guessing and kept me interested all the way through
My only criticism is Claire’s ability to feel faint at the slightest turn of events, mildly offputting but not enough to not give this book the score it deserves

I haven't read a psychological thriller in a while, and this book was the perfect introduction back into the genre!

Claire has just moved from London to the country with her husband and newborn. She's excited to have a fresh start, but almost immediately strange things begin to happen. Her mother-in-law is condescending and lets herself into Claire's home without invitation or warning. Things go missing in their little cottage, and Claire feels someone watching her. Is she losing her mind, or is she and her baby genuinely in danger?

This was one of those can't-put-down thrillers. Everyone around Claire seems to have a motive, and her past history with alcoholism and depression makes reality even muddier. Add to it a new postpartum depression diagnosis, and Claire's situation rapidly feels like being on a sinking ship.

I liked how the author emphasized how exhausting and isolating being a new mother can be. I felt exactly the same way when my daughter was a newborn, and sympathized with Claire, who really doesn't have a support system apart from a workaholic husband.

The ending was a big shock as well! Let's just say, I kept assuming that another character was the big baddie.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC.

This book pulled me apart, I am shredded while writing this review. The story prodded me in so many directions that I was in pieces by the time I got to the explosive reveal. And, boy, was it worth it!! The book put me through quite a wringer

Claire, Matt, and baby Olivia move to the country for a fresh start. But was that a good move? Only time would tell. And time answered, it brought about a series of strange noises, displaced possessions from one place to other, a note declaring she didn’t deserve Olivia, doubts about husband Matt’s fidelity, addiction to drink, a hateful Mother-in-Law… Whew… The list was never-ending.

My first book by author Ruth Heald, and with so many things happening to the main character Claire where she started doubting her own sanity, had me wondering too if I was going bonkers… I literally did not know whom to trust. Claire was then diagnosed with post natal depression, a busy husband and a cranky baby added to her mental stress. I swear I was getting more paranoid than her.

Generally, with such a main character, I lose interest fast. But Ruth’s writing had me enslaved to my kindle tapping away at the pages. The question burned in my mind like a blazing fire – What was the truth? Why was this happening?

2 POV, one of Claire and the other of a battered abused woman, gave layers to this story. And when the truth is revealed, I didn’t know whom to feel sorry about. Omg this was one book where my loyalties were so divided. I just couldn’t believe it!!

A maze of a book with so many dead ends, my mind kept gathering the suspects. I did guess, but the reason for such an ordeal to occur LITERALLY BLEW MY MIND AWAY!!

The Mother’s mistake by Ruth Heald is unputdownable, suspenseful psychological thriller.
After giving birth to baby Olivia Claire persuades husband Matt to re-locate to the countryside. To Matt’s hometown, where they move into Matt’s Grandmothers house who just recently passed away. When they move in, Matt’s Grandmothers things are still in the house, because Matt’s mother Ruth is not yet ready to take them away. Matt’s parents only live next door. Claire is struggling with motherhood; she is very paranoid, and she thinks she is a bad mother. But it doesn’t help when Matt’s mother Ruth tries to interfere. Ruth is not the easiest person to get along with and when weird things start happening and a note is bunged through the door that Claire doesn’t deserve to be a mother, she thinks Ruth is out to get her. But other things happen that Claire realises that someone from her past is come back for revenge.
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for a copy of this book. This is a great thriller with lots of twists and turns that will keep you hooked throughout the book. The only bit at first, I didn’t understand was the alternative chapters about a woman who was abused by her husband and her daughter suffered. But when you get to the end of the book all becomes clear. This is an excellent read.

5 big shiny fat stars which Is well deserved... having never heard of the author I’m always anxious to start a new book by an authors books I’ve never previously but this blew me out of the water literally. The blurb drew me in immediately I knew it was right up my street- full of mystery secrets and betrayal who doesn’t love that in a thriller?.

The opening chapter we meet Claire, her husband Matt and their baby Olivia they are relocating from London to matts home village in the country which is a tight knit small community, Claire and Matt are going to be living rent free in matts grandmothers house who sadly passed away until they can afford a deposit to buy their own home, Claire is hopeful for the future but is hiding a secret from her past one that comes back to haunt and torment her... Claire soon learns that her new fresh start isn’t greener and someone wants revenge on Claire for what she had done all of those years ago, but who wants revenge and why? This really intrigued me as I actually liked Claire’s character she seemed like a person I could relate to and even have a friendship with, so I was very curious to what she could have possibly done to receive the torment that she starts receiving when they settle into their new cottage.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was engaging, mind blowing, and I definitely wasn’t expecting the twist at the end and the show down of who Claire’s tormentor is, it blew me out of the water!
I’m looking forward to reading more books from this author as I know I’ll be in for a treat.

The conclusion definitely saved this for me.

I found the emotional roller coaster Claire was on to be tiring after a while. The evil controlling mother in law is starting to be a standard occurrence in these thrillers. Also, the husband that is selfish (earplugs? really?) and doesn’t ever defend his mate? Check...

I did like the writing. The characters made me absolutely crazy and I’m aware that was intentional.

Claire is your typical unreliable narrator. She can’t connect with her baby and she’s having trouble just making it through the day. She is unsure who to trust, if anyone. She has a drinking problem and blackouts so she can’t remember her actions and the things she is told are pretty crazy... but are they true?

Pretty early on in this story it was clear to me who was the problem. That’s not to say that there aren’t twists and red herrings. The thing is that there’s definitely some crazy subplots going on.

As I was getting into the final stretch I was thinking that this was pretty standard fare, eh. But then all the reveals take place and they gave the characters more depth and me a different perspective. Overall, this was entertaining and I would read more by this author.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Bookouture for a copy in exchange for a review.

New mom, Claire, and her husband, Matt, move to the countryside shortly after welcoming their daughter, Olivia, into the world. Looking for a respite from city life, Matt and Claire move into a small cottage behind Matt’s parents’ house. Claire finally has everything she could ever want, but she’s missing something—she just isn’t sure what.

Not long after moving, Claire starts to feel their move was a mistake. Her mother-in-law, Ruth, is less welcoming than she expected—cold, even. And Claire gets the sense that someone has been coming and going from her house without her knowledge. Taking her things, moving things around, only to rattle Claire. Matt thinks she’s being paranoid, but Claire knows better.

Then there’s a note left for her in her home telling her she doesn’t deserve Olivia. Claire has never forgotten what happened all those years ago—the guilt never fleeting. But now it’s clear that someone else hasn’t forgotten, either, and they want her to pay…

The Mother’s Mistake by Ruth Heald is a psychological suspense full of lies and secrets. The past always has a way of coming back to haunt you and this is all too true for Claire. We watch her spiral out of control at rocket speed and are just waiting for something terrible to inevitably happen. I had a feeling all along who the stalker/intruder was—I was right, but luckily I was still surprised by some of the details surrounding the reveal. We’re flooded with a bunch of puzzle pieces that seem haphazard. I wasn’t sure how they all connected, but when they finally came together, I wasn’t disappointed. Terrific new release from a debut author—4/5 stars.

Great book! Lots of twists and turns. Claire's life is perfect. Great husband and beautiful baby. Things turn when they move on Matt’s parents property. Claire feels more isolated with her baby and starts hearing things Her mother in law seems not to happy with her. She finally found a friend but matt’s Old girlfriend starts working with him. Is it Clair’s imagination or is someone out to drive her crazy?

Are mothers allowed to make mistakes?

We know they do make mistakes. Of course, they do. Mothers are human beings. But that is something we tend to forget. Even the mothers themselves forget about it. Why? Because society shows us amazing moms-to-be still doing yoga two weeks before their due date. Mothers walking in heels and wearing the brightest smile. Maybe only mothers glowing with happiness, looking at their upbringing with adoration. So we make them the perfect example of what mothers should be like.

My mother is a super-hero. I learned it a long time ago. She always knew how to soothe my fears and cries. With one look, she could tell whether I was happy, sad, ill, uneasy. She still can, but I no longer put pressure on her to be my rock. It takes adulthood to see mothers with their flaws, to consider them again as people, not just your umbrella against the world. Yet, my mother herself can’t take off that coat of responsibilities. When we grow up, they grow up with us, and their role changes, but never leaves them.

The Mother’s Mistake. What a catchy title! Simple but efficient. To the point. You have an immediate idea of where you’re going. Or so you think!

Matt, Claire, and baby Olivia are off to a new life, away from London. What better than the countryside and a cottage right next to Matt’s parents to offer your daughter a lovely childhood? I noticed it immediately. ‘Perfect’ A two-syllable word that can make or break you. Usually, yes, it breaks you. Trust me, I’m a perfectionist! Right away, I felt Claire’s will to create the perfect (see, that word again!) life for her family. I thought why not. Isn’t that what we all want?

Except perfect doesn’t take into account a mother-in-law who has her own ideas about how things should be done, a busy husband, and a past to hunt them all on top of a baby with needs and a personality that you must learn how to bond with. How’s that for a good programme?

When I remembered this was a psychological thriller and not women fiction, I wondered how the author would manage to tackle motherhood, a (possibly deadly) mystery, and enough room for characterisation. Soon, it became evident that Ruth Heald knows what she is doing!

Claire struggles to adjust to her new role of mother. Details on why are subtly scattered throughout the novel, as we watch Claire fight the muddy waters she finds herself in. There is no handbook about motherhood. Well, yes, there are many, but in a remote place, with only your baby as company, old scars itching and waiting at the back of your head for the first opportunity to jump back and make your life hell, you can’t be expected to be the perfect mother (we shouldn’t be expected to be perfect anyway!) The demands put on mothers are awfully heavy and I found that Ruth Heald dealt with postnatal depression in a very caring, non-judgemental way. It is important for us to read about it, yes, even in fiction. I learn how to be a better person (or how to always suspect the husband!!) when reading. What better way to give you an example of what women go through than with a character you can connect to? The intensity of the issue between Claire and Olivia only grows as other elements are thrown into the mix: a new friend, an old ex. Claire doesn’t know who she is, what she can be, and she unwillingly clings to a past that devours her. Yet, her unreliability didn’t feel like it was coming from her. Let me explain. Yes, she gets diagnosed, yes, she has a problem with alcohol that I totally couldn’t forgive (but that’s just my own past haunting me, see how the author gets to talk to every reader through all the little things she puts in her novel, including part of her heart!) but there was something off, something that kept whispering ‘she’s not crazy’ Weird cracking sounds, a threatening note, a suspicious behaviour from her husband and his family, you can’t blame Claire for all of this! I knew there was a chance she was misreading everything, and I was kept on the edge, but deep down, I knew Claire was not just chasing shadows.

With a darkening sky above her head, Claire falls deeper and deeper into a hole that seems to have been dug just for her… while in different chapters, a woman is fighting another battle. No name, sketchy details of her life, but those chapters are just as intense, painful, and they feel so real that, had I been holding a physical book, the pages would have shaken with all the feelings I was holding! I ended up guessing the who, but never could I have imagined the why, and for this, I must thank the author!!!
The Mother’s Mistake has such a force at its core, it reunites all kinds of secrets, it drives guilt to the highest point, it gives suspicion a bitter taste, it makes you run in circles until you reach the point where past and present clash in emotional and powerful fireworks. Absorbing and totally brilliant, Ruth Heald’s book is one not to miss!

Too repetitious

It was hard to even finish the book- The characters were horrible, Claire drove me nuts with her drinking and not loving her daughter. Matt was just as annoying spending his evenings with an old flame and seeing nothing wrong with it!! Glad it's all over!!!

The Mother's Mistake by Ruth Heald is a fast-paced, chilling and an absolute page-turner!
At first glance, Claire has a picture-perfect life, a loving husband Matt, a beautiful baby girl Olivia, and a new home. She has so much to look forward to. But everything is not as it seems, Claire is struggling with motherhood, she's grown distant from her husband, her mother-in-law who lives next door is constantly interfering in her life. She has only one friend to speak for - Emma, who is a mother to a baby girl herself. Claire's cut-off from her old life, job, and friends in London, stuck with a crying baby day in and day out and a husband who's too busy to help - all enough to drive anyone nuts! But when a threatening note is posted through her letterbox, saying she doesn’t deserve her daughter she knows that her past is catching up to her.
The opening of this psychological thriller is fabulous, It hooks you right in and keeps up the tension right till the very end. The story is told from alternating POV's which I found to be quite intriguing and kept me turning the pages late into the night. The characters are all well-developed. The plot is really great! It had me guessing until the end. In all, I'd highly recommend this book.

OMG Why is this book NOT all over the internet right now? Psychological thrillers are so extremely popular, I’m shocked this one didn’t pop up in my radar long before its publication date. Ruth Heald may not be a household name, but it will be after this book.

This is the story about Claire, married, new baby, trying to get away from the city, trying to get away from the terrible mistake she made years ago that continues to haunt her. She and her husband decide to go live in the country at her in-laws, where they own a cottage on their property. But once Claire gets there, she doesn’t feel the freedom that she longed for, she feels like someone is watching her and that someone is intentionally moving things around in the cottage. When a note is passed through her mail slot saying that she doesn’t deserve her daughter, Claire’s feels like her past has caught up with her, and she has nowhere to turn. With a husband who is never home while setting up a new business, and a mother in law who is extremely judgmental, Claire has no one she can trust, and nobody seems to believe her.

This book was amazing from page one, as soon as you start, you will not be able to put it down because it draws you in so fast. It's extremely fast paced, and I was able to read it in one sitting. (Part of that was because it was so good, I was completely consumed). There is an alternate voice in the story, approximately every other chapter, and it doesn’t tell you the same story as Claire. In fact, the alternate voice is telling you a completely different story, and you will spend the entire novel trying to figure out who this person is and how these two tales intertwine. I will tell you right now, you won't find out until the end, and when you do, you will never have seen it coming.

I try so hard with every psychological thriller to figure out who the culprit is before I reach the story’s ending. I will be honest; I had a really good idea who the “bad guy” was and I know most of you will as well. Trust me, having this knowledge does not affect the book at all, because having an idea of WHO this person is; is very different than knowing the WHY. At no point in this novel will you figure out the WHY until the very end. This one was a stumper; I just couldn’t put it all together, but that’s because you really don’t find out all the facts until you finish the book.

The premise behind this story is brilliant. What Ruth Heald did, and how she was able to form a story around these characters while leaving out such simple details about them was amazing. You don’t even notice until the end, when everything comes together, that there were certain things and details that we just normally overlooked and accepted as ok, until we become aware of them. (I would be more specific, but in doing so, I would point out said details, and then you it may spoil things for you). Probably one of the best things about this novel is that it takes the direction of your typical psychological thriller story-line, but ends in a completely unexpected twist that you could not have possibly imagined, truly a shocker. At this point you realize how much thought really went into creating this story, because the backstory is so unique. The suspense in this one is gripping. I can't say much more about it without telling you the entire awesome story and ruining it for you. What a brilliant debut for this author. It's not easy for me to give out 5 stars, I am extremely stingy, but The Mother’s Mistake deserves them. I hope Ruth Heald has more like this in her, because I will be first in line for the next one.

Thank You so much to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of The Mother’s Mistake for an unbiased and honest review.

Wow! This book kidnapped me and held me hostage. There was no escaping. I just could not put it down.

The author certainly opened a big can of psychology and poured a rich emotional sauce over it.

She lets us wander around in the culprit's mind and the whole way through you wonder who the 'italic person' is. You feel for her as well as for Claire.

How will this come together? Is there a connection between them? And if there is, which one?

OMG, I am so jealous of you all, the future readers of this book, because you still have to start with this gem, but I can't complain of course. I already was under it's spell and I loved it. 5 shiny stars.

Thank you, Ruth Heald, Bookouture and Netgalley.

I honestly don't know where to begin with this review, the book blew me away that much. In a word - WOW!

As a reader, I was torn in so many directions with it I didn't know how to feel. As a domestic violence survivor, I was ripped apart and felt a myriad of emotions for the "unnamed narrator" in her narrative. As I am not a mother, I cannot relate to the complete and utter helplessness Claire felt. I can only imagine. In a nutshell, THE MOTHER'S MISTAKE is brilliant!

So where DO I begin?

Claire and her husband Matt make the move from busy London to a village outside Oxford with their two month old daughter Olivia to be nearer Matt's parents. His mother has offered them the use of her mother's cottage, rent-free, while they save for their own house. It seems the ideal solution particularly as Matt is busy setting up his new vet practice. Overall, Claire seems to have the perfect life. Perfect husband, beautiful baby daughter and a new start to their lives.

But Claire has a secret. Something from her past that has haunted her for three years. It almost destroyed her once before, and as it comes back to haunt her once again, will it succeed in destroying her this time?

It isn't long before Claire's life starts to spiral out of control and becomes a living nightmare. Strange things begin happening, she feels she is being watched and she finds things being displaced around the house. Is she being paranoid or is someone really after her? Maybe she is just overtired and imagining things. After all, she is hardly getting any sleep while Matt snores endlessly every night with earplugs in, oblivious to her fears and Olivia's constant screams. It's no wonder she is exhausted.

Of course, it doesn't help that Matt's mum is constantly interfering - walking into their home uninvited, declaring "it is MY house, Claire" or always inviting Matt's ex-girlfriend around. Nor is Matt helping by not standing up to his mother and supporting his wife. In fact, he spends most of the time at the surgery with his new employee, ex-girlfriend Sarah (at the suggestion of Matt's mother, of course), while Claire is left at home alone all day with a screaming Olivia who just refuses to settle.

When new-mum Emma befriends her, Claire finally feels she has someone who can understand her struggles as a new mother. But Emma makes motherhood look so easy that it only serves to make Claire feel even more inferior as a mother. Being a new mum is hard and while she is finding it hard to bond with Olivia she sometimes feel she doesn't love her as she should. Maybe this is what she deserves...for what she did three years ago. Thank goodness she has Emma to confide in. Her only friend in this small and isolated village. She should have Matt, but he's too busy with his new practice...and Sarah.

Soon Claire begins to doubt Matt's fidelity. Why IS he spending all those hours so late into the night at the practice? Why is he not home with his wife, whom he knows is struggling? He saw what she went through three years before and how it nearly killed her, so why is he so dismissive of her and spending all God's waking hours at the surgery with his ex-girlfriend when he clearly knows she is not coping? When he knows what she went through? Her depression, her alcoholism, her guilt and now her obvious struggles with being a new mum? What is wrong with the man? No matter how much she tries to talk herself out of the obvious, she soon doubts even how well she knows the man she married.

Since moving to the village, Claire feels her life is just slipping through her fingers. She begins to question her own sanity as she discovers items being displaced around the house...or did she move them herself and not remember? She starts forgetting things, hearing things, imagining things. Matt's worried and makes her promise to see a doctor who then diagnoses her with post natal depression. Well, that much was obvious even to me but I was surprised the doctor did little to follow up. And Matt? Well, if he was so worried about his wife then why was he not at home more, supporting her, taking some of the pressure off her? There were times I could throttle that man as I was reading. And then to so openly declare, in front of everyone, that she was paranoid and imagining things...well, my heart just ached for Claire. I could really feel her isolation. No one cared. No one understood her pain. No one, but Emma.

I had to admit, I began to suspect a bit of gaslighting was going on because I doubted very much that Claire was as paranoid as everyone was suggesting. Even when the note was put through the letterbox claiming that she didn't deserve Olivia. To be a mother. Someone WAS out to get her. But who? Claire can only think of one person - Ruth. Or is it Sarah? Because she wants Matt back? Problem is, Claire really did believe she didn't deserve Olivia. and that she was a horrible mother. And despite Matt declaring otherwise, he did little to reassure her that she was.

There is a second POV in this book, in which the narrator is unknown. But one thing is clear. She is a victim of a violent domestic abuse at the hands of her vicious husband whilst trying to protect her little girl at the same time. Throughout the entire story, this unknown woman's narrative runs alongside Claire's as we watch both stories unfold with shocking and devastating results...for both. In a way, you won't see coming!

THE MOTHER'S MISTAKE is a brutal, shocking yet compelling read you will not be able to put down. It will have you questioning Claire's sanity, your sanity, wondering what was truth and what was happening. You won't know who or what to believe. And when the truth is revealed, you will feel a division of loyalties.

With so much happening, so many red herrings, false flags and dead ends, the suspect list just kept changing. I did work out the WHO but not the WHY and when the reason becomes clear - as it did for me just before it unfolded - I was blown away!

Not many books leave me with such an impression as this one did...in such a way that I pity the next one I open for fear it will simply fall into the shadow of this one. Not many books leave me feeling the next one could never compare. But this one did.

THE MOTHER'S MISTAKE is such a brilliant addictive read that really will keep you guessing till the end. I highly recommend it.

Overall, I thought this was a good read but I chose to rate it low because it was a bit too drawn out and there were quite a few things within the story that aggravated me. The ending wasn't unexpected but it was good nonetheless. I thank Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I have to give this book a 3. It was just okay for me. I am so burned out with the abusive relationships and bad mother in laws etc. It is a slow paced story that I just couldn't get invested in. I think if I hadn't have read so many like this I would have liked it more.

Tons of people are loving it and that is wonderful!

Claire and Matt thought that when they moved out of the city with their baby, Olivia, it would be a fresh start. Living in a cottage on the property of Matt’s parents seemed ideal. They could save money until they could afford to buy a place of their own.
But it isn’t the fresh start that they envisioned. Being a new mother is so hard for Claire; she is so often down, and feels nothing when she looks at Olivia. Matt’s mother is overbearing, and seems to dislike Claire and cause trouble. And Matt? He isn’t the person she thought he was. There are secrets he has been keeping and they seem to be drifting further apart. Numerous things make Claire thing she is losing touch with reality and no one seems to believe her and she feels so isolated. She only has one person, Emma, that she can count on.
The story is told primarily from Claire’s point of view mixed in with another voice that is in dire straits and seems to be filled with a life of abuse. Just who is this second voice? As more is revealed, we wonder how it is connected.
Misunderstandings, secrets, lies, jealously and betrayal are all components of this delicious tale. I read most of it on one sitting. I was so engrossed in the story even though there were very few likeable characters. I would give this book a definite 4 1/2 stars and I will be looking for more of this author’s books.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW

I loved this book. I was on the edge of my seat right from the very beginning trying to work out if this mother was going mad or if someone was really out to get her. I kept changing my mind and shouting at her to get out and run. I was not disappointed at all with this story and couldn’t wait to find out the conclusion.

This book was amazing from page one, as soon as you start, you will not be able to put it down because it draws you in so fast.  It’s extremely fast paced, and I was able to read it in two sittings.  (Part of that was because it was so good, I was completely consumed).
The Mother’s Mistake is a tense, compelling and at times brutal read, with many twists….the final reveal will leave you speechless….Brilliant writing by Ruth Heald…I loved every minute…

Claire and Matt have just moved house. They lived in the city both having successful careers but when a baby came along they moved into a house belonging to Matt’s mother that was originally his grandmothers. Claire is struggling with motherhood. All the things she thought it would be are not and she is finding it increasingly difficult not helped by that Ruth has promised to clear it out and hasn’t done a thing. The house was promised rent free until they could save a deposit for one of their own. Ruth, Matt’s mother comes and goes as she pleases as“its my house” and Claire keeps finding things have moved which Matt at times doesn’t believe on the basis that she was ill before and is worried that this is a recurrence. In occasional sections we get the story of a woman who is beaten and controlled by her husband so much so that she doesn't go out, has no friends and is not allowed interaction with others. We don’t know who this is. Claire was keener to move than Matt. Does he have a reason for this as he has told Claire little about his childhood? There is an undercurrent of various tensions even within the early stages of this book. Ruth- is she trying to help or has she another motive? Matt and his past. Claire and her illness and losing a baby beforehand. This is a very well written piece and one that makes you slightly anxious (or at least it did me!). I thought I knew who the culprit was but not why. A clever well researched book.

Claire Hughes had a really tough experience three years ago. She has risen above it and now gets a chance to have a very good life with husband Matt and baby daughter Olivia. Claire and Matt have moved into a new home and are blessed with a warm, affectionate marriage.

However, Claire really is not doing well. For starters, they are living in Matt's grandmother's home and his mother will not allow Claire to make it her own. What is worse is that Claire feels very inadequate as a mother, and has a difficult time bonding with Olivia. Things in the home seem unsettled, off at times. Then, when a note comes through her letterbox, saying that she doesn't deserve Olivia, Claire nearly falls apart.

Throughout the entire story, we have two viewpoints, that of Claire, and that of an nnamed narrator. At least one of the woman has completely fallen apart, and has experienced unspeakable angst. It is rather tragic to read.

This was a compelling read that I devoured from cover-to-cover in one sitting. I am a grandmother of several, with a newborn grandson the age of Olivia, so with some of the things that Claire was experiencing, I kept relating to young mothers. I think for none other reason that I am a very sensitive person, and thus, a sensitive reader. I do appreciate very much that the author included real feelings of insecurity where a new mother is concerned.

It became quite apparent early on that Claire had a stalker, and that certainly did not make her life any easier. As the pages passed by, I figured out who it was, but clearly understood how Claire could be fooled. What didn't help matters much was just how awful Matt's mother was. Matt did try as a husband and new father, but he gave me cause for concern at times.

I loved this book! A Mother's Mistake was a great debut novel for Ruth Heald. I do look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

One of my favorite features in books is the acknowledgements or letters from the author, and this book contained a letter. It provides great insight as to why Ms. Heald wrote the book and I think brought great awareness to post-natal depression.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.

The Mother's Mistake is a psychological thriller that will capture your interest from the start.

One of the premise's of the book is that everyone makes mistakes but does everyone deserve to be forgiven.

Claire , Matt and their baby daughter move to a cottage on his mother's property. Ruth isn't the nicest of mother -in-laws and things quickly begin to go wrong.

Claire is suffering from postpartum depression and makes some crazy decisions. At the same time , she is receiving notes, someone is gaslighting her and she begins to doubt herself.

There is something in her past that you know is a huge factor but it is unclear what it might be.

You feel sorry for Claire at the same time you are saying don't do that. She is like most new moms sleep deprived and everything is amplified.

Who should you trust in this story, her new friend Emma, her husband Matt, Sarah his ex girlfriend ?

The book draws you in and keeps you turning the pages because you want to see what will happen to Claire. Twists and turns though a bit predictable still a great read.

Good story, strong characters. I look forward to reading more by Ruth Heald.

Thanks to Net Galley and Bookouture (always a favourite publisher of mine) for the opportunity to read The Mother's Mistake.

This is a great read.
Claire moves to her mother in law’s cottage with her husband to start again, but soon gets the feeling that she’s not wanted there.
With a tiny baby to care for she expected the cottage to be welcoming, but her mother in law had not even cleared out her late mother’s belongings.
Claire tries to move on and work her way through all the clutter but with a husband who is always at work, and her mother in law as a neighbour, she starts to struggle.
Claire meets Emma, another mum in the area and life starts to look more promising, until, things start being moved around the house and Claire receives a nasty note.
Her marriage is in trouble and Claire doubts her ability to look after Olivia and even though her husband is worried about her, she doesn’t know who to trust.
Events build up to a frightening climax and I couldn’t put the book down!
This is an addictive psychological thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

Okay, I read this on my Kindle so it took me a while because I read a chapter before bed. I found the story to be okay, overall. I felt that the plot was slower than it should have been, things seemed to be happening slowly and it did make the story drag. I felt sorry for Claire because he mother-in-law was quite an unpleasant woman. I can't imagine having to deal with someone like her, and she was my least favourite person in the book. That's including the 'baddie' in this story.

I can appreciate the author's intension in making the events that happened to Claire a slow build up to making her feel 'crazy' but they felt a little too slow for me. Although, it was well written, I just found that I couldn't really sympathise with Claire, because at times I found her to be aggravating and a touch annoying.
