The Hunte Family #1

Out of the Red

Rate this book
One impassioned argument.
One dominating kiss.
One unexpected moment that turns everything upside down.
And that’s only the opening act.

Rockstar Braxton Hunte is the type of chaos that makes your soul burn…

Brax has been on tour for a decade, and some may say he swallows obstacles for fun. Well, maybe he does—he’s never encountered a riff he couldn’t handle, a treasure he couldn’t score, or a woman he couldn’t conquer. No one, especially not a buttoned-down rule-follower like the band’s new tour accountant, is going to change him.

Accountant Sara Anderson is an unabashed stickler for the rules…

Sara’s worked nine long years to make partner, and only one thing stands between her and her goal—Hunte. Now she’s going on their tour to whip the band into financial shape. So long as she gets them out of the red, the promotion will be hers. Those bad boys of rock will be tamed, no matter how yummy their lead singer is.

When rebellion confronts discipline, fireworks explode.

Passions collide, and lives are permanently altered, in this enemies-to-lovers, slow burn standalone romance set in the mid-1990s—when grunge ruled the airwaves and women partners were as uncommon as those new mobile phones.

For as long as Arell Rivers remembers, she has been lost in a book. During her senior year in college, she picked up a romance novel … and instantly was hooked.

She started writing her first novel, No One to Hold, because the characters were screaming at her to do so. The story started coming out in Arell’s dreams and attacking her in the shower, so she took to the computer to shut them up. But they kept talking.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Arell has what some may call a “checkered past.” Prior to discovering her passion for writing romance, she practiced law, was a wedding and event planner and even dabbled in marketing. She lives with a very supportive husband and two mischievous cats. When not in her writing cave, Arell can be found making dinner in the crock pot, working out with Shaun T or hitting the beach.

She hopes you enjoy her stories about flawed men, strong women and the passions that ignite!

Out of the Red is the first book in the Hunte Family series, and Arell Rivers kicks the series off in a wonderful way with Braxton Hunte. I was addicted to this one in the best way possible, and I cannot wait to get my hands on book two.

At first, I was a wee bit tentative about this one. I love a good rock star romance, it’s one of my favourite kinds of romance, and I was a wee bit worried this one would mirror those I have read before. Yes, it was different due to the time in which it is set, but I feared it would be another repeat of the trope I have read many times before. Add in the fact I wasn’t initially won over by the connection between the two characters, and I was a bit worried.

The more I read, however, the quicker the worry vanished. Once the story started to move, I found myself sucked into the events and the characters. There were some predictable elements to the story, but the amount of love I had for the story meant I did not mind. I was so addicted, so sucked in by the little things, that the things I found predictable did not annoy me but were moments to put a smile on my face because I was happy to see the way things played out.

Without a doubt, Out of the Red offers fans of rock star romance plenty of the good stuff. It offers the things that make these kinds of story so much fun, and I was hooked throughout. I was addicted, and now I’m eagerly awaiting book two.

I cannot wait for more of the Hunte family!

Out of the Red by Arell Rivers is a fantastic story about love, fame, and all the drama and angst you’d expect in a fabulous rockstar romance. Author Arell Rivers’ writing is refreshing, original and captivating, with characters that are well developed and addicting.

I love the premise of this story. Author Arell Rivers took me on a nostalgic journey through my glory days, starting the story in the mid 90’s, but going back to the late 80’s when hair bands and Aqua Net ruled. It is the journey of rock god, Braxton Hunte. His claim to fame and refusal to let go or face the harsh reality of his situation. Until he’s forced to remove his rose colored glasses by a smart, sassy beauty, who is also his band’s accountant, Sara Anderson.

The push / pull between Braxton and Sara gives me whiplash. Their banter is sarcastic, funny, sexy and biting. Their attraction is palpable. They have moments when the walls are down that are honest and emotional.

Out of the Red spans over a decade. It is engaging, angsty, sexy and real. It covers the ups and downs of fame, life on the road and pitfalls of relationships. It is the perfect start to what I’m sure will be a fantastic series. I cannot wait to read the next book, King.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book that I have read from Arell Rivers and I know that it won’t be my last. This book was so good. I loved that it went back to the 90s. You were taken back to the past and if you are old enough to understand the 90, you will like the reminders. I was in high school during that time so I know what it was like having a beeper (I know I did). You had two strong minded people who you knew were going to butt heads when it came down to it. Brax for not wanting to follow the budget and keep partying the way he always did and Sara who needed him to follow the rules and wouldn’t back down for anything. They go back and forth through the whole book because neither wants to give up control. This book will give you all the feels. I can’t wait to read King’s story.

While I had no issues with the characters in this story (except the incredibly childish ex-wife of Brax)
I found the reason behind Sara joining the tour a little (ok a lot) far-fetched. Braxton can't deal with a lot in this book and Sara deals with too much - polar opposites that do attract. I did like their relationship but the part where Braxton's actions almost cost Sara her promotion was eye-rolling-ly ridiculous. Nice ending albeit typical with an epilogue far into the future and if Brax's son King has become a carbon copy of his mother, well it left me curious as to how Sara put up with it all those years. Even though King's book is next - i would be more inclined to read about Bassist Colton.

My One and Only.....

First off great start to a new series.
Brax is a spoiled self centered Rockstar in my opinion. One that needs to grow up or get with the now and get out of his - what he used to be. He's an aging rocker stuck in his past. The love he has for his son and his music is an admirable thing though. Now just to get him from spending the money he doesn't really have hmmmm...
This is where Sara comes into the picture. She is going to be the new tour accountant and boy does this job have a lot riding on the outcome.
Sparks are going to fly, insults abound, a hot sexy front man, hot sex scenes, and a good story is what you are going to get. Excited to see what happens with the next installment. And let me tell you not sure if I like Kings character or not....we will have to see. I'm reserving my judgement.
I recommend this book.

Wow; Sara and Braxton truly grabbed my heart and kept the pages turning as I was mesmerized by this love story. As a reader you don't know what to expect as their tale unfolds with twist and turns as the writer totally grabs your attention. As I read this tale unfold, it was hard for me to put this storyline down. I kept wanting to know more. Sara an Accountant and a career woman trying to make partner in her firm is given the task to curb the spending of one of their long existing accounts. She knows she is close to making her mark and become partner when she is sidelined with this account that no one in the firm has been able to master taking out of the rears and into a profitable account. To boot it is the infomous Braxton Hunte. The band Hunte has always been a long time favorite of hers; she has swooned over Braxton and the music of Hunte for what seems like forever; She is not going to let that stop her from making partner. Braxton is a musician with a spending habit who acts more like a child then a man or is he? She is not getting her point accross by sending out memo's of a new strategy on how the band can cut back and still come out ahead; she becomes the Accountant on Tour with the band. Not one accountant with the firm has ever done that before. She is taking the bull by the horns but has she bit off more then she can chew? Sara and Braxton's story unfolds in away that in the end the writter has you fighting off tears; you will definitely need a Kleenex or several before the end of the book.

I highly recommend this book. You will be glad that you dove right into next favorite love story.

I was provided this Arc by the author. This review is strickly mine alone.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book! It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it worked well, and there were several interesting elements.

I loved that it was set in the 90s. I remember this decade well, and it made me nostalgic to read about discmans, the first cellphones, and grunge music. A fascinating time-travel experience.

The main characters were quite compelling. I’d have liked to actually see their past through their actions, instead of mostly reading about it during their conversations–it isn’t exactly true for Sara, but still. Nonetheless, their opposite natures are well described, and it makes the fact that they meet somewhat in the middle even more compelling. They complement each other in a nice way.

The hints about what was going to happen to them and threaten their relationship, were so on the nose that I was expecting it very early, which ruined the surprise for me. I won’t ruin it for you though. Same with the plot regarding their financial problems. Nothing subtle here.

But the originality of the couple–a rockstar and an accountant, with the woman older and taller than the man–hooked me to the story, and I couldn’t put it down. Yes, a very pleasant surprise.

Quickie

Out of the Red: The Braxton Hunte Story (Hunte Family #1) by Arell Rivers is a contemporary, enemies to lovers, rockstar romance told in first person, dual POV that takes place in the 1990s.

Sara Anderson has her work cut out for her. Working toward earning partnership at her accounting firm, she's been assigned a final test that could either make her or break her. Sara is tasked with getting the firm's problem client, famous rock band Hunte, out of the red. Determined to succeed where previous accountants have failed, she decides to take a rather unconventional, hands-on approach. By joining Hunte on tour, Sara will be able to see first hand what the issues are in order to make corrections and get their finances back on track and in the black.

Lead singer and guitarist, Braxton Hunte, loves living the rockstar lifestyle. He's accustomed to expensive nightly parties, high-end alcohol, and an entourage of women that travel with the band to satisfy physical cravings. The last thing Brax wants is some uptight accountant trying to tell him how to spend his own money. He should be able to spend whatever he wants without restriction. He deserves it! He's worked hard and earned it. So Sara can keep on making budgets, but the only way Brax will follow one is in her dreams.

I really loved this story! I especially enjoyed the nostalgia of revisiting the 90s. There were so many great references that took me back in time. The characters are fantastic as well - likeable, relatable, and believable. Brax and Sara are complete opposites who continue to clash and butt heads throughout the book. Their chemistry is palpable and together they are explosive! Full of witty banter, twists, surprises, and so many emotions. I can't wait to read what comes next!

Arell Rivers delivers once again with this delicious contemporary romance page turner. There’s plenty of heart, friction and sizzle to steam up even the coldest of kindles.

Sara is an accountant who has been busting a gut to make partner at her firm, at the expense of a social life. She’s decided that love and children are too messy for her orderly life. She likes things she can control and for things to add up... rock band Hunte, do not fall into that category. Unfortunately for Sara, this clients shambles of an account is the one thing standing in her way of her promotion to Partner.

Braxton Hunte is used to living and spending the way he wants to and is a pretty stubborn individual and unwilling to bend or even listen to his new accountant. Braxton is almost an anti-hero; he’s rude and deliberately antagonist to Sara, trying to drive her off of his account and off his tour. He quickly learns that Sara is just as tenacious as him, and much less buttoned up than he rudely assumed. The problem with Brax is that he doesn’t always see the bigger picture and how his actions have consequences for people other than himself.

The characters are so well written and relatable- even the evil ex wife. So many writers would have just made her a b*tch and she is, but Brax hurt her badly at a time she was very vulnerable, so you can understand why she’s never forgiven him- even if she does go to the extreme of making lives miserable. That’s what makes Arell Rivers such a joy to read - all her characters are well thought out. Brax, for all his flaws, will make you swoon.
Definitely recommend this book.

**I graciously received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest, unbiased review.**

You KNOW a book is good when it makes you feel strong emotions.

This one is one of those books.

From the moment I stepped back into the mid 90s and met Sara, I was hooked. Her storyline is one I haven't really read in other novels: hardworking business woman who puts work before anything else and is trying to make partner at her accounting firm. She's independently fierce and doesn't have a need for anything besides order.

And then she gets put on the Hunte account, and chaos ensues.

Braxton Hunte is HOT. Like, a sizzling ball of rock and roll and hotness. He's also a jerk when it comes to Sara. At one point during a heated exchange between him and Sara, I actually put the book down because I was so mad at Braxton that I wanted to throw something at him.

Again. You KNOW a book is good when it makes you feel strong emotions.

The evolution of Braxton and Sara's relationship - from hate to love and everything in between - is one that had me staying up at all hours of the night to get the book finished. Their story is raw, emotional, steamy, fiery, passionate - I can keep going on and on. This isn't your typical rocker story, which I absolutely loved. Arell Rivers became one of my favorite authors after reading this book; it's been one of my top three favorite reads this year, for sure.

Take a trip back in time! Out of the Red, written by author Arell Rivers, gives you the Braxton Hunte Story, a musician, which takes place in the 1990’s…think…land lines, tour buses, discman, hardly anyone had cell phones yet, internet wasn’t huge, and tabloids were our information stations!

When Sara Anderson’s final challenge by her accountant firm to make partner consists of getting the band Hunte’s account “out of the red”, she knew she had her work cut out for her. Easiest way to do this…go with them on the tour for a couple weeks…easy enough…right??? Even when she used to have the biggest crush on the lead singer, Braxton.

Braxton, really likes to blow money and doesn’t like to follow a budget! He is a man-whore and likes to have the entourage follow the rock band tour. He is hot and he knows it. His band was amazing…and he is determined to put them back on top!

The storyline of Out of the Red was great! The supporting characters (bandmates: Colton, Ricky, and Lex), Hunte’s Ex-wife (Hilary…and holy moly was she a beastie!!!) and their son (King) were all really well written. I really enjoyed this book by Arell Rivers and am looking forward to the next book in the series, KING.

Out of the Red was definitely an original type of rock star romance, and I, for one, totally loved it. At first, I wasn't sure the direction it was going in, but despite that, I couldn't put down. It's the first in The Hunte Family series, and it totally has captured my heart already. It's the journey of rock star, Braxton Hunte, who has the big hair & entourage of girls that he makes sure to pay their expenses to follow him, even though he isn't producing the number 1 hits anymore. Sara gets involved as the final accountant trying to get the band back on track, and the battles are something else, not to mention, they have some serious chemistry. Which is crazy since she is so organized, while he's so chaotic, but opposites do attract. They fight, she makes budgets, they get to know each other, he goes rogue, and finally their chemistry won't be denied. Which leads them to the hottest night either has ever had, which is a miracle for him, and an eye opening event for her, as they lit the sheets on fire. Then there's some hurt feelings, drama from the ex, and twists the had me dropping f-bombs like crazy! And still, it's not your average rock star romance because for real, perms are so 80s! Anyway, if you want to know how it all pans out, if Brax ever really grows up, just one click this baby because it's awesome! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This is the first book I read by this author. As I read it I really liked it. Sara is the accountant that has to try to get Brax’s band out of the red because they don’t worry about how much money they spend. She tries to make them see they need to cut back & do other things to improve themselves. Brax also has a boy, King, that he doesn’t get to spend time with because of his schedule & his ex. He becomes intrigued by his accountant & things blow up due to his spending & not realizing his own people are hurting his bottom dollar. Then when Sara ends up pregnant he may end up missing out on another chance at being a dad.
I did a lot of fussing at these characters but they pull thru & not make me hate them as bad.

OMG!!! I just love Brax and Sara. Ms. Rivers really knows how to write awesome Rockstars.

I enjoyed the fact that in the beginning Brax and Sara didn't really like each other. Sara, a buttoned up, super organized accountant with her life all planned out, had idolized Brax for years and had a huge crush on him but meeting him in person was a major let down. Brax was as Sara put it "a man-boy". His life was always in chaos, he was used to doing what he wanted, when he wanted like a spoiled child. They had an immediate dislike of each other but over time came to admire came to admire, like and love each other. They turned out to be really good for each other.

Ms. Rivers, as in her previous works, made the characters realistic and endearing. It was easy to care for the major characters and want to know what happened next. I could not put the book down, staying up to 3:15 am to finish it. This is definitely a book I will read again and again. It had all the feels and of course a HEA. I know the next book in the series is set to continue with Brax's son King but I really would like to see Brax's best friend Colton get his own book. I really liked Colton even though he was a side character.

I am a true Arell Rivers fan. I've read all of Ms. River's books thus far and look forward to reading her new works for a long time coming.

Braxton Hunte is a bad boy and he loves it!! Braxton has an ex-wife and a son named King. Then you have good girl Sara Anderson and she works for an Accounting firm!! Braxton Hunte is the lead singer of the band, Hunte, and the band isn't doing as good as they used to. They are playing smaller venues but, they are spending money as if they were still playing sold out stadiums. Sara wants to make partner in the Accounting Firm and was given one last test and that is to bring the Hunte Band back into the the black. Sara decides that she is going to tour with the band to see what is going on with the money. Well she decides to give each band member an envelope with a budget as to how much they are allowed to spend. Boy that did not go over real well and Braxton and Sara end up going toe to toe. At one point Sara was advised by friend to make nice with the band members and after a bit a few band members did what they could to stay in budget or below. At some point things between Braxton and Sara start to get hot. Sara also found out that someone was stealing money from the band. Sara gets to meet Braxton's son King and his ex-wife at King's Birthday Party and the ex-wife was not nice at all. Not going to say anymore as I don't want to give any spoilers. You truly have to read this book to find out more!! I truly loved this book and can't wait to read King's story!!

Bad boy, handsome rock star, Braxton Hunte - meets innocent and naive tour accountant. Sparks fly, but their stubbornness is front and centre. In order to get something she wants, Sara, is sent on a mission to curb the spending of the music group Hunte; the boys want nothing to do with this, they won't even listen to her - she eventually turns things around - they develop a friendship, but there is lots of work to be done - and with regards to the band's money, things aren't as they seem. I would like to have seen more of this part of the story brought up - consequences?

Brax and Sara get closer - they actually talk to each other, lean of each other - some of their past is painful, it's nice to see the emotional support. But, Braxton takes things to far, to get something done, and in the end it's too for Sara to overcome, and she leaves - both of them heartbroken, but not wanting to face what they actually mean to each other.

They come face to face at a charity concert - they talk, and admit things that needed to be said - I loved their HEA! and I loved the glimpse into the future - stupid Hilary!!!

An endearing rockstar romance I enjoyed!

Rockstars are essentially my crack. I love reading about gorgeous, sexy as hell rockstars meeting and falling for the women who end up taming them. Braxton and Sara are the perfect characters to pull that off. I saw many similarities between Hunte and my absolute favorite band, Bon Jovi, which made me love the story even more. It was an extremely slow burn romance. The really good stuff didn't start until I reached the middle of the book. That along with the fact that Sara was a bean counter, which is one of Brax's favorite terms for her, are the only reasons I only gave four stars. I just got a little bored by all the numbers talk. Braxton Hunte is the lead singer of the band, Hunte, which isn't quite as successful as they once were. I loved the fact this story took place in the early 90s due to the fact I spent a lot of time then at rock concerts. There were so many bands back in the 80s that weren't able to survive due to a lot of changes in the music scene and Hunte is just like those real rock bands. They are playing at smaller venues but still spending money as if they are still selling to sold out stadiums. Thus in comes Sara Anderson, who is working hard to become partner at her accounting firm. As a final test, she is handed the Hunte account to see if she can be the first at the firm to get the band out of the red. In order to achieve her goal, she decides to go on tour with them to see if she can accomplish what others couldn't. This brings her toe to toe with Brax which starts a heated enemies to lovers story for the ages. You see how a larger than life character like Braxton still has insecurities as does Sara who never saw herself as anything other than plain Jane. They are able to give each other the specific things they were lacking. But then everything pushes in creating angst and doubts. I truly loved the way the author began to bring the story to an ending that had me smiling so hard my face hurt. I'm looking forward to the next installment where we get King's story. I love any story that leaves me feeling warmth as if I played a part in them reaching their HEA, which this book certainly did.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review!

I've never been hit with nostalgia quite like I was while reading Out of the Red. Not only because of all the early 90's references but also because I have taken 4 accounting classes at uni so I definitely know all about the bottom line and expenses and I completely understood Sara's characterisation in this novel. It was so different because she was the accountant and he was the rock star with the out of control spending habits! Most of the novels I read, the billionaire is always the alpha male and is always chasing the quiet artsy woman who suddenly tames their playboy ways (how stereotypical of me)

Not to say that Braxton Hunte isn't a playboy, which he most definitely is because let's face it, he's a rockstar and I mean, you expect it from these guys (once again I am stereotyping ;)). But Sara isn't there to tame him from his playboy ways, she's there to make partner of her accounting firm and the only way she's going to do that is if she keeps Hunte out of the red and to stop them from having to declare bankruptcy!

It's not an easy gig for Sara. She thinks, throwing a budget under the band members doors every morning will easily squash their money troubles and the band will be on easy street. However in doing so, she creates delicious mayhem of the fabulous fangirling type.

All along, you know that Sara is a fan of Hunte's, not just the band but the lead singer Braxton as he is professionally known. So when he barges into her hotel room and explosively tries to reason with her, the searing kiss he gives her to shut her up only ignites something within them and Brax can't seem to get the accountant off his mind. Although thankfully, Sara isn't willing to let her shot at becoming partner go and her ambition is spread out through the pages. She's not one to be conquered by a guy and told to sit at home and create babies and cook dinner every night like her best friend. That's probably my favourite part of this whole book. She doesn't let her attraction get in the way of what she wants.

And when Brax ruins her chances of becoming partner, she doesn't back down. She takes aim and she shoots directly at the source. Because lets face it, he should have known better after spending two weeks on the road with his accountant who never shut up about helping the guys be profitable for the first time in years.

I honestly loved this book. It was so nice to have a different setting of era and I am always a sucker for a rocker romance.
