Several years after the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Sasuke Uchiha travels through a forest. Despite having once been an international criminal, he was granted freedom and a new outlook because of the friendship of Naruto Uzumaki, the love of Sakura Haruno, and the trust of Kakashi Hatake. He meets two young boys, Ōmitsu and Komitsu. Ōmitsu is forced to confess to Sasuke that their family was killed by Akatsuki.
Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.
Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.
Personally, I feel that Akatsuki is one of the best villain organisations in aniverse, boasting members with memorable personalities and unthinkable techniques.
When I read the first page, I sincerely thought I was given a misprinted cover book of Sasuke's Hiden, and the back of my mind was nagging, "Umm, isn't this Akatsuki Hiden...? I get that Sasuke was briefly part of them (p.s.: I never acknowledged that, it felt too unofficial) but we're talking about those who wear the rings on the cover page, ya get what I'm saying? It was after I read Chapter One that I see what the author is trying to do - parallel world experience. While there is nothing similar between what Sasuke and Itachi experienced with the minor characters in their respective chapters, I argue that they merely served as mirrors for the Uchiha brothers to reflect on their relationship, and sentiments towards their one another. They were meant to see themselves in the bee siblings and that memory trigger would in turn affect and justify their actions.
Each chapters are segmented by the partner system, so even though I wanted to save Itachi (the best) for the last, it would make sense to dive into his and Kisame's story after Sasuke's appearance in the Prologue. Initially, I was expecting one chapter for each members and their stories before joining Akatsuki, instead I got neither - turns out the "untold" side of their stories is really their adventures in Akatsuki with their partners. One of the problems with this is, as in Itachi and Kisame's chapter: Kisame's inner thoughts are compromised and unsatisfyingly compensated with more action. Honestly, after reading Itachi Shinden, I'm convinced it takes an entire novel's length to really understand any of these people. Even after two novels, I continue to learn more about Itachi in this novel. As expected of this mature duo, I had a high time reading their dialogues.
Next up is the comedic couple of the team, Hidan and Kakuzu. Their dialogues never fail to crack me up - one minute they are grumbling and complaining to one another like an aged couple, the next one of them starts whining like a wilful child and the other eventually yearns with a sigh like a parent to child. They are perfect for each other, in the partner sense, of course. As with the previous pair, it deals with a never seen before technique in the canon, with countless references to Lord Jashin and Money.
We then proceed from the Destroyers to the extreme end of the spectrum - The Artists. By the time you're this far into the novel, you can't help but feel you're watching another filler episode of Naruto Shippuden, but it's a filler done right. With the introduction of a female cast, I knew I was getting my hopes up for nothing by wishing for Deidara's hormones to react... It did not even need to last, I would be satisfied with a longing backwards glance or even a hug. Then I realised this ain't no Fanfiction.net, and promptly shoved my inner romantic away. Despite my rants, I am contented with the ending (Deidara you go!).
I would be lying if I said I'm looking forward to reading Nagato and Konan's story, and fortunately the author seem to know that and kept it really short. In fact, nothing much really happened, it was mostly flashbacks from Konan's perspective. However, this limited canon material (those flashbacks) was taken advantaged by the author, and aptly incorporated into the plot so it felt less of a 'revision' than a ploy. If I were to think of myself as a ninja in Narutoverse, I would probably live my life like Konan, who lives for her man (men).
One of the most beautiful things the author did was to show the ripple effects of the members, so even when no partners crossed paths throughout the novel (you can read each chapters as one-shots), the stories remain connected via the places they visited, the people they met, and the words they left behind. It was a reminder that the black cloak with red clouds is just one side of their identities, and they are capable of doing more than just destroy (even if that's what they do most of the time). However, as I'm nodding head and tearing up at the reformed and repentant Sasuke reminiscing about Itachi, something more devastating dawned upon me - they are all dead. All these colourful, kick ass, deplorable, yet undoubtedly loveable characters, could only exist as memories in their Universe. Even when none of them set out to be villains, their beliefs and actions invariably led them towards the path of such, which would only be greeted with demise at the end.
"You would only know what kind of person you are when you are met with death in the face." Itachi couldn't have been more right - if we take a moment to recall their deaths, their "untold" sides were already revealed then.
The epilogue nicely encapsulates the natural cycle that governs the Universe, "cause and effect," and surprisingly (or strategically), Akatsuki left hope in its wake. While it ended on a happy note, I closed the book with a heavy heart.
ولی موخره قشنگ بود: “The Akatsuki too had family. The Akatsuki too loved. They too were shinobi, they too were human.”
The art of pursuing yourself may be violence against someone in a sense. Perhaps a too"" strong individuality may not be able to gain an understanding of others. Still, they moved on their way""
He’s making fun of art! I’m going to kill him!"
You would only know what kind of person you are when you are met with death in the face."
I can't deny I'm a sucker for friends to lovers where one of them dies and there's revenge and a villain origin story. Said this, Yahiko's and Konan's part was the one I liked most.
(Note: This review will not make sense to you if you are not familiar with Naruto's basic story and characters. I suggest you read up on them before reading my review)
Naruto is a series where I find the villains to be far more interesting than the main cast.
Now, that's not to say there are no interesting characters in the main cast - though my favorite from there is most definitely not the main character. Kakashi holds that honor, probably because he's far better developed and has cooler abilities than Naruto. The other characters in the main cast have their interesting aspects, but none are as cool to me as those who serve as the main villains for most of the series, the Akatsuki.
Each member of the Akatsuki is cool in their own way, from Kisame (my personal favorite - ironic, because when I was a kid, I was terrified of sharks, due to how they're drawn on many a famous shark movie poster) with his water abilities to Deidara with his ability to create clay sculptures and then cause them to explode with a single word. And cool as they are, being that they're bad guys - and minor ones, at that, for the most part - there's only one fate you know will befall them: death. While I'm a Naruto fan, it's kind of disappointing that most of the cool characters are villains, and thus doomed to die, while all the good characters, who are far less interesting, will live. So to be given a novel that focuses almost exclusively on the Akatsuki is nothing short of a dream come true.
When I say "almost" exclusively, I'm referring to the fact that the book opens with a wandering Sasuke, feeling remorse for his misdeeds. I'm not a huge fan of Sasuke's character, because...well, to make a long story short, let's just say he gets away with a lot of things he frankly shouldn't. But thankfully, he doesn't appear much - instead, after he meets with a boy who lost his family to the Akatsuki, the rest of the novel unfolds, focusing on their exploits.
My favorite chapter of the book, naturally, is that focusing on Kisame and Itachi, though the one focusing on Hidan and Kakuzu is also pretty awesome. The chapter focusing on Sasori and Deidara wasn't as interesting as the others, though it just being one focusing on them makes it enjoyable. And then there's a short chapter at the end, which is basically not much more than discussion between Tobi, Konan and Pain.
Relating to that last bit about Tobi, one of the book's final scenes is a short conversation between him and Zetsu. All but a few of the Akatsuki members believe Tobi to be Madara Uchiha, and reflecting this, Zetsu calls him by his true name, Obito. I'm not a fan of Tobi's character, especially knowing he was Obito, who was such a likable character when first introduced, but the scene shows the character's human side, specifically him saying, "Just you wait, Rin." Fortunately, he isn't the only character to have their human side shown; the closing lines of the book are, "Even the Akatsuki have family. Even the Akatsuki have things they love. Even the Akatsuki are both Shinobi and human." And at least here, it doesn't come completely out of nowhere, nor does playing up their human attributes feel undeserved, like so many other villains.
What makes the book particularly enjoyable for me as a reader is that we know the whole time that none of them will die in the book. Yeah, we know they'll die in the main manga story, but at least they'll make it through here, and it shows some of their crimes outside the main story. Always fun to see. If there's anything I would have added, it would maybe be some backstory and to expand on their characters, but this isn't anything too severe - it just being a book about the Akatsuki members makes it an awesome read.
Which brings me to the only other issue for the book: it only ever came out in Japanese. Viz did translate some of the other Naruto Hiden novels; why can't we have this one in English? This means, unfortunately, that unless you can read Japanese, which I can, you'll have to rely on fan translations to enjoy the book. But if you're a fan of the Akatsuki, or just a Naruto fan in general, the book is totally worth buying, and worth reading more than once.
Hidan part was the only entertaining section. Great base idea. Wished they had a grand narrative connecting all the characters and short stories. But the translation I read might‘ve not been very good.
Unsurprisingly, Kakuzu and Hidan chapter is my favorite. It was always entertaining with the zombie brothers. But Konan's chapter tho, it was so beautiful, yet sad at the time. God, the angst. And I also like how the prologue and epilogue was Sasuke's. It's always nice reading from his point of view.
And the last line, yes 'Akatsuki' had family, 'Akatsuki' were humans too. If there's one thing I got from Naruto, it's probably how there's no pure evil in the form of human. There's always a reason on how they ended up on the bad side. So yeah, I think Akatsuki is one of the best villain out there because they have back story and whats not.
I feel like this gif represents my (and Sasuke's) feelings right now after reading this. I'm just mad. Mad that they didn't decide to animate this novel. It would be top saddest anime scenes probably. Firstly, I wanted to mention that I don't like all Akatsuki members, f.e. Hidan. I never symphatized with him much, but I think it would be enough if I say here that this novel made me do it. I felt like here, finally, each one of the members had they own time and story. We could see not only how they cooperate, but also their motives and understand why they act like they act. Just like the last words in the book said, they were portrayed as humans, not monsters or pure evil creators. Secondly, experiencing Sasuke and Itachi moments is always sad (seriously, I've been watching this anime for like 10 years and even after watching some scenes like 10 times, I still cry after Itachi's last farewell) and here they touched this sensitive part of mine too, especially showing Sasuke's point of view... This one has to be my favorite among Naruto Hiden novels. I market like 10 fragments and ima read them many times, I'm sure about that. If you are Itachi and Sasuke fan like me or you simply want to know something more about Akatsuki members (finally giving some character screen time they deserve) I recomend this one.
Me entretuvo bastante 😋
I was only able to find a really bad english translation, so I had trouble understanding half of what was going on in the book. I'm sure the book is better than this and hope I'll be able to find a better version in time.

«Naruto-eyed niichan**, are you a ninja?» This time, it was Sasuke’s turn to open his eyes wide at those unexpected words. «…Naruto?» Komitsu pointed at Sasuke’s left eye, who was feeling bewildered even if he didn’t show it. «Because your eye goes round in circles and it looks like a naruto fishcake.»
"Also Akatsuki had a family. Also Akatsuki had loved ones. They too were shinobi, and were humans."
Really nice novel that followed the Akatsuki members. I especially loved the part of Sasuke and Itachi that was connected. The brothers love.
