Ohio promises freedom. Kentucky threatens bondage. Only one thing would entice an escaped slave to take the risk.
In 1838, escaping slaves know Ripley, Ohio is a good place to cross into freedom. But slave catchers know it as well. Micah Spencer spends a frozen night silently waiting for runaways, unaware that the next escaping slave will change his life. Runaway slave Opal knows she’s risking her life and that of her infant by leaving Kentucky and making a desperate journey north. If she is to make it, she’ll have to trust the people she fears. Constance Drake admires the heroic abolitionists of Ripley but wonders if she has the courage of her convictions. When she’s asked to cross into enemy territory, she’ll have to rely on her faith and every ounce of bravery she has.
An exceptional adventure into the past. I got this book because it is set in Ohio, where I am from. It proved to be quite a story about slaves and Underground travel loaded with facts and insights in a compassionate storyline. My only complaint, which I chose to ignore in my rating, was the actual printing. There were several places with printing mishaps in the first several chapters. I could not find anywhere to tell me what company printed this book. The story, however, 5 Star for anyone who likes historical fiction and a plus is that it would be acceptable for YA.
Was a pleasure to dive into this story and difficult to put it down each evening. Such a difficult, sad and tragic time in our history and to have a story finish with a positive, uplifting ending makes it a doubly hard time to find the next book to read.. it will have a lot to live up to.
