Far from the myth of surf, sand, and orange juice, Mark Lane's snapshots of life in the Sunshine State are more likely to feature gargantuan insects than bikini-clad coeds.
Mark Lane was an American attorney, New York state legislator, civil rights activist, and Vietnam war-crimes investigator. Sometimes referred to as a gadfly, Lane is best known as a leading researcher, author, and conspiracy theorist on the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.
This book was just given to me by my high school sweetheart (Facebook...gotta love it). The author is also in our high school graduating class. This book so captures what it means to be a native Floridian...back when Florida was not wall-to-wall condos, before Disney and Miami Vice... Back then when your kids went out to play you didn't teach them about strangers, you taught them about gators, spiders, snakes, insects, rip tides, razor-sharp oyster beds and emergency first aid. The paradise of my childhood...which is so hard to explain to my "northern" friends, who think I am from "The South." No, no, Florida is not the South...it is an island unto itself.
This is a compilation of Mark's hilarious columns from the Daytona Beach News Journal and a must read for anyone you know who lives in(or visits) the greater Central Florida area.
