From my 8-year old son:

I like the mystery of what the nebula is. You can feel how the characters are feeling. I would want to know the heroes, but I wouldn't want to be in the situations that the villains put the main characters in. It's scary. I like how the book ended. I want to know what happens next.

From me:

I love the format of this book. It's mostly a novel, but it has really beautiful illustrations thrown in to break up the text. The layout makes the book fun to read. Cruz is a relatable kid, and I appreciate that ALL the kids in here are smart, independent, and brave. The story is entertaining and moves along quickly. The ending perfectly sets up the next book, and my son is looking forward to reading it. I would give it five stars, but my son said four.

Okay, this was really good! Really liked it!!! The adventure, the suspense, it's not super fast-paced, but still a very good book! Cruz is a nice character, Emmet is cool! Sailor is just, yeah awesome!!! Bryndis kind of, not some much on...Dugan is kind of funny...and Renshaw was fun!
Okay, so this is a short review but walk away with you should totally read this book! They are fun, enlightening, and just pretty great!

I am nine years old and this is one of my favorite books I have read. One of the things I like about it is that the story includes many science facts. The book is a real cliffhanger with a lot of action. If you read it you will always be looking forward to the next book in the series; I know I am!

Tegemist on fantaasialooga, kuid mis on üsna realistlik, sest paljud avastused on juba tehtud. :) Igal juhul sobiv raamat teismelistele teaduse populariseerimiseks.

Cruz has just been accepted into the elite Explorer Academy, which only accepts 25 students per year. In the midst of his classes on anthropology, science, geography, history, and conservation, Cruz also has training sessions in a virtual reality program designed to prepare the students for real-life exploring all over the globe. Then Cruz starts to receive threats from an unknown enemy, and discovers a mystery in the school. His mother died working in the top-secret labs at Explorer Academy, and Cruz is determined to find out what really happened to her.

I loved this book so much! The adventure, the mystery, the engaging characters, the impressive setting at the Academy... I love it all. But the best thing of all... the puzzles and codes!!! I LOVE puzzles and codes.

The plot is full of twists and turns, and there is so much history and depth to the story as Cruz discovers the murky past of the Academy. His mother's mysterious death provides a serious counterpoint for all the fun explorer training and student shenanigans.

I was really pleased with the futuristic tech in the Academy, from the virtual simulations to Cruz's tiny bumblebee robot. It's all so fascinating, and creates a rich setting for the story.

Cruz is such a relatable character. He has drive and energy that propels him into adventure, and he has a very high sense of honor and truth that is the foundation of his relationships with other characters, including friends and teachers and his family. I felt like I was racing along with him through every scene, puzzling through the mystery with him, and going through all the emotional ups and downs of his experiences right by his side. I cheered when he won, and clenched my fists when he was in danger, and cried a little when he mourned his mother's death.

All the supporting characters are memorable and refreshing. Cruz has friends among the students, and some frenemies too. The friends build trust and rapport with one another, and then they get annoyed at the frenemy characters who are trying to make trouble.

I really enjoyed seeing Cruz in class interacting with his teachers, since I am a teacher, and I love the classroom dynamic and the students' enthusiasm for learning. I also appreciated actually learning some real facts about exploring and conservation along the way!

His close relationships with his father and aunt are the root of Cruz's character, as we see how they guide and support him with their family love. I just adore the depth of those family ties.

I would recommend this book to readers aged 8 to 80 years. I can't wait to read more from this series!

A STEM adventure novel for fans of Rick Riordan and other fast-paced ensemble stories. Parents and grandparents will love the throwback feelings found after reading hardy boys and Nancy drew because these characters are solving mysteries making dangerous choices in hopes of discovering truth. Recommend for ages 9-12, readers who love gadgets, tinkering, solving puzzles, traveling, and adventure!

Man, I enjoyed this re-read wayyyyy too much😂 I just love these books, they're so fun! The characters are great and I loved being with them again!💖
Cruz is a great character! Very relatable and sweet but has his own flaws as well!! Love him!💖 And Sailor and Emmet are amazing!! Sailor is so fun and cracks me up, she's just great! And so, so loyal!💖🥰 And Emmet is just so sweet, and funny without meaning to be which is the best kind...lol! He's such a good friend to Cruz and his own struggles are great!💖
All the characters are amazing tho!💖🥰
The concept of the series in general is very cool!!! With all the cool gadgets and global adventures! And the pacing is perfect enough fun scenes mixed in with the action!💖
Can't wait to re-read the rest of the books so I can get to the two I haven't read yet and finally finish this awesome series!💖🤩

This is the type of book that I'll probably read dozens of times. It's the kind of book that I would never dare dog-ear the pages or toss it in a box like it's just some old book. This book is going to sit on my shelf for the rest of my life begging me to read it over and over. Yes! It's that good!

Really 4.5 stars. I am impressed with Nat Geo's first foray into fiction. I know the finished product will be even better, with completed illustrations and profiles. I am looking forward to the rest of the series. I sense that it will be popular with both the science and adventure readers.

Positiivne:
* tüüpiliselt imeline kool suunab õpilasi koostööle, mitte konkurentsile;
* kaasaegsele teadusele orienteeritus;
* raamatu lõpus olevate reaalsete teadlaste tutvustus;
* KAARDID!

Simple, fun and fast going read.

Explorers academys first story reminds me somewhat of Harry Potter. No it doesnt have the magic you can smell from the book and there are no wizards but there is a killed parent, interesting new school with tasks that remind me of mazes and the road to philosophers stone. At points it was annoyingly cliché but then again it was sweet and fun. All in all enjoyable read but nothing special.

Exciting and kind of scary. I was a little bothered by how much of the book the main character was hiding dangerous things from trusted adults and his dad but it turns out sharing the burden of difficult things with trusted, loving adults is rewarded in the end. My 9-yr old is reading the series. I will continue to read along as there are a couple of things I’m unsure about where the author will take things. The kids in the stories are 13yr olds and the audience is probably meant to be a bit more mature than 9 but it was still great for his age. It reminds me of Harry Potter without the witches and spells and using scientific inventions to help the outside world - encourages study and a love for school, the virtues of honor and character above academic and all other achievement, honesty and close loving relationships with parents, loyalty and kindness among friends and between kids and teachers. I am looking forward to reading more of the series!

#FirstLine ~ "Cruz!"

This book is so great for kids. It is a wild and action-packed adventure that kids (and parents) will love. I adore that The Nebula Secret is book one of seven to be released in this series brand new Explorer Academy Series. The book is based on real-life science, exploration and mission of the National Geographic Society. This is what sets Nat Geo apart from others. With the action packed adventure, code breaking and exploration this group of students will attend the Explorers Academy and get to really dive into a thrilling quest. All kids will be able to relate to the characters, will get immersed in the science and will love traveling the world. This series will be a hit and we cannot wait to continue on the adventures.

Great book for tweens! I bought this for my son a couple years ago and he loved it enough to put it in my To Read stack, which he doesn’t do very often. I finally worked my way to it and am glad I did. He developed an interest in 3D printing after reading this, but didn’t directly tell me the book is what sparked his interest. Now that I’ve read it, I put the pieces together and we’ve had some fun conversations about science and technology. Now, he’s getting a 3D printer for Christmas along with the fourth book in the series (he’s already read the other two). This isn’t great literature, but it’s a good adventure/mystery with plenty of exciting science that really appealed to my smart son. A great intro to science-y science fiction.

Plausibility issues really killed the story for me. Someone tries to murder the main character, but he doesn’t tell anyone because they might not let him go to his awesome boarding school. Like, really?

And then at the end the protagonist blames his best friend for conspiring against him even though there’s a perfectly serviceable antagonist available. Seriously?

And most worrisome of all, the big-bad is a pharmaceutical company hiding a revolutionary medicine for profits. In a world where there are conspiracy-theorists who actually believe that sort of thing, this plot line seems irresponsible.

I would recommend this book for any age, girl or boy. The art in the book is sooo captivating and draws you right into the story. Trudi Trueit is a great author and I can’t wait to read the second book. I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a great, interesting read.

2 stars: meh

I think the idea behind this book is good, trying to teach kids about science in this fictional story. At the end of the book the author goes over the actual science.

The story is boring. This is like taking the Harry, Ron, and Hermione trio and putting them in Enders game novel keeping it PG rated. Nothing is bad about that, but it's not an original/interesting plot.

The characters didn't develop in this book which makes it more boring.

This book is absolutely breathtaking! The amount of imagination shows how much time the author put into it. The characters are obviously very intelligent. The school that Cruz and his friends go to sounds super fun, yet also very challenging. Every single turn of this book reveals adventure, excitement and danger! I can't wait to read about Cruz's next adventure!
