A random mom in a Facebook group was talking about how her son was gifted Dog Man and she didn't want her kid to read it, and how to go about that. I went into the comments, bc that's my toxic trait, and I noticed a lot of moms praising the books, saying it made their kids into avid readers. I decided to give it a go and check one out at the library for my 1st grader. I wouldn't say he was a "reluctant reader" but he was in the phase where he knew a lot of sight words but reading was still a bit hard, so he'd push back on reading out loud and it was starting to be a chore. Boy did that all change. After reading the first book he immediately wanted #2, so I got him the box set and he blazed through these so fast! He stays up at night with a book lamp, and once referred to recess as "read-cess." He's read all the books and re-reads them. Yes, it's got toilet humor. Yes, they misspell some words. It's a supposed to be a comic written by 3rd graders. These books got him in a great habit of reading, and now he is building the confidence to read chapter books with more difficult plots and fewer illustrations. He's a huge Dav Pilkey fan now and has read all the Super Diaper Baby books, and has started Captain Underpants and Ricky Ricotta. Thanks to Dav for making so many books in this format to get the kids excited about reading.
