A random mom in a Facebook group was talking about how her son was gifted Dog Man and she didn't want her kid to read it, and how to go about that. I went into the comments, bc that's my toxic trait, and I noticed a lot of moms praising the books, saying it made their kids into avid readers. I decided to give it a go and check one out at the library for my 1st grader. I wouldn't say he was a "reluctant reader" but he was in the phase where he knew a lot of sight words but reading was still a bit hard, so he'd push back on reading out loud and it was starting to be a chore. Boy did that all change. After reading the first book he immediately wanted #2, so I got him the box set and he blazed through these so fast! He stays up at night with a book lamp, and once referred to recess as "read-cess." He's read all the books and re-reads them. Yes, it's got toilet humor. Yes, they misspell some words. It's a supposed to be a comic written by 3rd graders. These books got him in a great habit of reading, and now he is building the confidence to read chapter books with more difficult plots and fewer illustrations. He's a huge Dav Pilkey fan now and has read all the Super Diaper Baby books, and has started Captain Underpants and Ricky Ricotta. Thanks to Dav for making so many books in this format to get the kids excited about reading.

Oh my goodness! Dav Pilkey to the rescue! I have a now 7 year old son who was very much a reluctant reader. These books were recommended to us by other mums at school of children who weren't keen on reading.
My son got into Dog Man when he was 6 years old, during covid lockdowns when school was closed. He instantly was reading a book a day, as they are simple and comic style so not too much reading per page. But loads of fantastic bright, engaging illustrations.
Being able to tell his grandparents he had read an entire book in one day gave him such a confidence boost and after a few of these books, he moved onto books with more text. From there he's come on so well, as a 7 year old he now has a reading age of 10.
He has actually read all of the Dog Man series, Cat Kid and some Captain Underpants.
I honestly think a lot of that comes direct from Dav Pilkey's fantastic skill of getting reluctant readers confident.

I felt like the Captain Underpants books lost their way and got too complicated in the last half of the series. These books stay simple and are just entertaining. My kids love them.

I like this one because we get to see more Of where is cat kid who is the father which was peety, I think but other than that More story about dog man teaming up with a cat or more of a kitten but still more interesting if there more Drama about dog man and the younger kitten.

My 7-year-old won’t put this down! He’s started reading on his own, quietly to himself. It doesn’t teach him anything valuable but it’s entertaining and replacing screen time so I’m happy!
