His enemies whisper into the ears of his judges. Rotting in a cage, Cris is imprisoned in a city heavily infiltrated by his enemies. Their system of justice demands Cris account for his actions, but even if he can argue well enough to save himself, his bewighted son will surely be put to death. His task, as impossible as it seems, is to convince his captors that a wight should be spared. Or, of course, Cris could burn the whole city to the ground.
