This volume is almost entirely from Koyuki's perspective, which, while it doesn't help us get a handle on Konatsu, does nicely advance the romance plot by showing us how Koyuki is truly falling in love with Konatsu. She's almost growing dependent on the other girl, which is an issue that the story will eventually have to work on, because ultimately they can't be just like the frog and the salamander - and neither would they want to be, because then the salamander (Koyuki) would have to kill the frog (Konatsu). That's an issue that Koyuki's beginning to become aware of, and I'm looking forward to how she handles it when volume five comes out.
Full review of volumes 1-4 eventually appearing on ANN.
You’ll always be Honami to me, whatever you’re like.
3.5 stars. Very sweet as always. There were some interesting developments in this volume, and while Honami and Konatsu are still a bit of a mystery to each other, you can really feel them getting closer in little ways. I loved the small moments we got, like Konatsu visiting her when she was sick, and those glimpses of the relationship between Honami and her mother, whom we haven't seen before. Honami's anxiety about texting Konatsu during the school trip was so real and so cute. I wanted to hug her. And I really love the slow burn journey we're going on with regard to Honami's self esteem and self image issues.
I love the way the mangaka draws the animals too. They're a liiiittle bit too anthropomorphised for my tastes, but I still do find it cute when the fish talk to each other and whatever. Also, I'm terrified of frogs, in any form, so the fact that I don't mind the frogs in this is a little miracle in and of itself.
This volume had an adorable ending (what a good hug!) and I can't wait to see where it goes.
More of a 3.5 star rating; This was another slow paced volume but I liked it because it was more so in Koyuki’s perspective. We got to see her anxiety about graduation a bit and a lot of her anxiety over her friendship/feelings for Konatsu. My issue is that because this volume, and the previous one, have been so slow-paced I only see things between the main characters as a friendship with a small crush. I understand that they need time to fully understand and process their feelings for each other, but I’m worried with how things are going to actually progress between the girls once Koyuki graduates.
fhshajs this is too cute aaaaaah, the whole volume is yearning and animal names love language, she said she could be her frog and then in exchange she'll be a salamander jdbshwhwh ahem so cute "a salamander and a frog...they should have been more honest about telling each other how they really felt"
omg and when she was in her bed with the blahaj reading the book
"retiring [from the aquarium club]... graduating...this is awful..."
SO SWEET AND CUTE AND CUTE AND JUST EKDJRKAKSJKH it’s so perfect for a bad day cause it’s just a really lovely story where nothing really bad happens and everything will be okay and just😭 love this series, also for some reason English version of the books aren’t listed on good reads which is kind of strange?
I love the recurring salamander/frog theme and it is super cute. I felt bad the Koyuki was sick for the festival but I love Konatsu hanging out with Kaede. I am a little confused about why they (Konatsu and Koyuki) are not allowed to celebrate after George went through the ring... onto the next to help find out why.
This needs to be made into an anime, stat! I just feel like the blues and the immersive setting will come alive on screen. I really loved this volume, and Koyuki’s character growth, learning more and more to be herself and embrace her feelings. Everything about this manga is just so sweet and pure! A great summer read and I can’t wait for the next volume!
A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow is a lighthearted yuri manga about loneliness and change during highly transitional periods of life and growing up and honestly, it executes it pretty well. Scenes and interactions are fluid, and Koyuki and Konatsu both represent their respective feelings authentically and in a way the audience could relate to.
“I thought I had changed. I thought I had found myself. But… letting people see me like that… is still scary.” “You’ll always be Honami to me… whatever you’re like. If there are parts of you I don’t know yet, then I want to get to know them. And if someone says that isn’t you… then I’ll tell them that they’re wrong!” (pp. 153-155.)
“I’m not a good role model. I began falling apart when I met Konatsu. If Konatsu spoils me like this, what will I do? This isn’t like the salamander story. After all… I’m going to graduate first, right? I… wish I could be her salamander.” (pp. 159-161.)
It just feels so authentic for Koyuki to mull over that salamander and frog story for the majority of this manga (after Konatsu’s comment, of course) and to overthink it, underthink it, then finally come to her shaky conclusion here at the end of this volume. And the first quote from above (pages 153-155) punches me in the chest like I’d been reading this whole volume just to build up to that brief exchange where Konatsu followed after Koyuki, and merely sat next to her until Koyuki felt ready to talk.
I love that Koyuki’s father has the intuition to tell how special Konatsu is to Koyuki. I don’t know if he sees the embers of young love or if it’s merely the connection between the two, but he’s able to tell what Koyuki needs and who she needs it from. He’s able to take a step back and let Koyuki make her own choices and I admire him as a father for that. I also like how Koyuki’s mother is made out to be someone different from that with her own quirks, personality, and relationships. She doesn’t necessarily see what Koyuki needs nor who she could be receiving it from and that obviously has stressed her for some time. She sees her daughter has become a social shut-in, and she knows pushing her won’t help it at all, so she nudges her gently time and again but otherwise gives her appropriate space and love. She can’t read the room the same way the father can, but likewise, the father has also been an observer for a lot of Koyuki’s school life, especially when compared to her mother’s involvement.
3.5 stars and I’m rounding down because this volume didn’t quite do it for me and it took me a while but I think I figured out why. Make no mistake, there are still a ton of good parts in this series, but this wasn’t as strong as I’d hoped.
The book separating our two leads for a good chunk of its story is not necessarily a bad idea - it certainly gives us a chance to see Koyuki’s anxieties at their absolute worst (oh I’m so glad to be old enough to have missed out on playing text message chicken while in high school) and forced her to reckon with her feelings...
...but Koyuki and Konatsu haven’t been together enough to make me feel like this was the right time for this to come in the story. Yes, we have a previous three volumes of them becoming friends, but the pace of this series is so slow (and that’s not a pejorative, merely an observation) that it feels like more should have happened before they get pulled apart.
Your mileage may vary, but I feel like they should have been on the cusp of something before this trip split them up, but with everybody being so guarded it’s hard to tell where things stand at any given moment (this series makes a simple hug look like a victory in the decisive battle of any given war).
I did like a bunch of things in this book and it was nice to see Koyuki struggling to see the aquarium show at the start when she was sick, and the aftermath when Konatsu visits her was probably the highlight of this volume.
Further, while I don’t think the Tokyo trip was used as judiciously as it could have been either, the random encounter Koyuki has with a stranger there is also pretty fun too. And the rapid transition of the open house from victory to anxiety attack that leads into the finale was quite memorable (and believable).
I don’t mind all the frog and salamander symbolism, but it remains to be seen if it will amount to anything. Still, it served as a stuffed animal delivery vehicle, so it can’t be all bad. And this is a particularly inconsequential detail, but I really loved that somebody noticed Konatsu continues to wear her old school uniform.
My guess is that this volume will function better for me once I have a subsequent volume in hand to sandwich this one in place. Right now it feels like it was a bit too soon, even as it was putting gas in the tank for the future.
Lo he disfrutado muchísimo. Ojalá poder darle más de 5 estrellas a este volumen porque se las merece.
Volume four continues to be as sweet as the previous ones. This book centers completely around Koyuki and her feelings for Konatsu. She's anxious over wanting to be near Konatsu but fearing she'd be too forward with it if she said something, and also the fact that she'll be graduating soon but Konatsu still has a year to go. What will happen to them?
This volume didn't have any clear highlights but it's slowly building up Koyuki's feelings and also deepening her character which has turned out a bit different than you'd think in the beginning. She looks like this cool older student but she's actually not very confident person.
I might've said this before but if you like Bloom Into You, you may very well like this one too.
'A Tropical Fish Yearns For Snow' continues to be dramatic and full of longing emotion - the two girls are separated by various events and continue to miss each other desperately, while still not really being able to express how much they mean to each other. It's kind of odd that I keep hearing that this isn't intended/ending up as a romantic pairing, because they're _so_ into each other, to the exclusion of everyone else - even as they talk about wanting to be able to be friends with people, we see them putting off their peers for another chance to be together. Ah well; it's cute and full of melodrama, and with two adorably overwrought introverts.
(Review’s in English, but I read the German translation)
Ahh I can't wait for them to actually *talk* they are so damn adorable and it makes me so happy to see them being happy with each other? Even when they aren't together just the amount of comfort they get from each other.. ahh Also..their hug ;__;
Oh and I almost forgot! The notes of the editing / translating team at the end are so nice - they explain their change in translations/mistranslations and everything in a honest, easy, and fun way. I like that
4 stars. This series is really, really, slow and I’m honestly not sure where the story is going but I’m enjoying the ride. This one is from Koyuki’s point of view and we really get to see her anxiety at play here. Poor girl. The representation was well done and felt honest but this wasn’t all angst and sadness. There were some fun moments like the trip to Tokyo and when Koyuki was sick and Konatsu came over to check her was adorable. This was a great volume and I’m excited to see what happens next.
3.5 rounded down. There was a dramatic moment near the end where it was a little unclear what actually happened. I think Koyuki got first-named in front of an audience? Or possibly she had a Feeling while looking at Konatsu in public? That should have been a lot clearer. Anyway, good aside from that, featuring continued fluff.
The yearning is coming, the yearning is coming! I love how soft and sweet and cozy this romance manga is, set by the sea with the aquarium club. And the covers are gorgeous. I hope we get a confession soon!
This is getting agonizingly sad. I just want them to get together already!!!! Not just because I’ll be happy but for their own good. I also realized that this manga reminds me of Blue Flag. I should read that again too. Also, Honami’s parents are hella fine.
This series is nice to read. Not a ton is happening, but I like seeing these characters live their lives. I don't recommend this series to everyone but I personally like to have a slower softer series to read in between action packed ones. I love the style and the tropical life. Very sweet girls.
Another good volume in the series. This was really enjoyable. I like the artwork and the character growth. It had a good pace, good story. I look forward to the next volume.
