Seasons of an Amish Garden Story

Seasons of an Amish Garden: Four Stories

Rate this book
Enjoy a year of beautiful seasons in this story collection, as young Amish couples manage a community garden and harvest friendships and love along the way.

Spring Is in the Air

As the young people of Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania, plant a garden in memory of their friend, Katie Ann begins to worry that her older brother, Ephraim, is dating her best friend. What if she somehow loses them both? But Christian, a new boy in the community, also works in the garden—and falling for him may be exactly the distraction, and lesson, that Katie Ann needs.

Home by Summer

Clara Hertzler is surprised when Jerry Petersheim, her old friend, comes to the garden to drop off his younger sister—especially because Jerry has been gone for years, and now seems to be living as an Englisher. As the friends get to know each other again, Clara pushes Jerry to examine why he abandoned his Amish beliefs. Will Clara help Jerry renew his faith in God, and will they find love beneath the summer sun?

The Fruits of Fall

Tena Speicher has come to live in Bird-in-Hand after her fiancé left her for an English woman. When a homeless veteran comes to the fruit stand one day and asks for food, Tena is not sure how to respond—but Wayne intervenes and offers to let him stay in the barn. Afraid to trust Englishers, Tena must learn, with Wayne’s help, that everyone is a child of God and deserving of kindness.

Winter Blessings

Ephraim and Mandy have dated for some time and now have plans to marry. But after a series of unexpected events and misunderstandings, they wonder if they should go their separate ways. What will happen when their friends at the Amish garden conspire to bring them back together?

4 beautiful and uplifting novella length stories all by author Amy Clipston. These stories each take place in one of the four seasons and revolve around a community garden dedicated to a deceased community member in his memory and the proceeds from this garden benefit one of his favorite charities. Each novella follows one couple and is complete in itself. We get to follow the ups and downs of the relationship with each couple.Very well written and enjoyable stories. I have read many of this author's books and they keep getting better and better.
I look forward to reading many more books by this author.

I absolutely loved these four stories and the young people in them. I was kind of annoyed with two of the boys for how they behaved, but I had to remind myself that they are all young, and the situations were very emotional for them and the girls they loved. The idea to set each love story within the theme of the seasons, where they all come together to work on a community service project and romance develops one couple per season, is so clever and works so well. The cat, Hank, really took center stage in these stories, still sitting at the kitchen table as if he expects a dinner plate himself!

FTC DISCLAIMER: I RECEIVED AN E-ARC FROM THE PUBLISHER THROUGH NET GALLEY. I VOLUNTARILY OFFER MY HONEST REVIEW OF THE BOOK, THOUGH IT IS NOT EXPECTED OF ME! RECEIPT OF THIS BOOK IN THIS MANNER DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR THE CONTENT OF MY REVIEW!

This is a book of 4 short stories that are tied together by both the theme of a garden and the group of people working in it. The stories revolve around all of the people working the garden finding love with another person in the garden group or maintaining a relationship started prior to the garden's formation.

My problem was, I had a hard time connecting with anyone in the individual stories. In the Spring story, I hated how selfish Katie Ann, Ephraim, and Mandy seemed. It didn't seem true to the Amish way to me, and no one made mention of it! Granted, anyone can slip away from that selflessness path, but I thought that others in the community would have mentioned it to bring the "wayward" one back onto the path. That didn't happen in that story. In the Summer story, I found Clara to be too pushy and too demanding of Jerry to be truly likable, and Jerry himself seemed too uncertain to be believable. In the Fall story, Tena was too closed off and too fearful to be likable, though I did want to know more about what happened with the homeless man. The Winter story cycled back to Ephraim and Mandy, but Ephraim was too stubborn and set in his "plans" to even consider Mandy's point of view. It made me feel as though he wasn't ready to compromise, which is what makes a marriage thrive, and thus wasn't ready to marry.

All things considered, the book didn't leave me with that uplifting feeling that I have when I finish a good Amish story. While I was entertained, I was merely marking time and not fully enjoying the read.

An enjoyable read from beginning to end, each story building on the previous.
We have met some of these characters before, and if you miss the previous introductions, don’t worry there is plenty of information offered so you won’t be left out, and you get to meet “Hank”.
These are sweet romance offerings with a spin put in to wonder if these young people will be able to make a life together. From beginning to end you will be pulled into these young adult’s lives.

I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Zondervan, and was not required to give a positive review.

The book includes four continuous novellas by Amy Clipston. A group of young people hoping to make a remembrance for a deceased community member and his widow, take on a project of a garden and baked goods stand. The profits from which will go to the homeless shelter near by.

Their goals are very worthwhile as they work together to tend the garden, work at the stand and purchase supplies as needed. As they work on the garden with love and caring, you can also see a similitude of how it represented their lives and how they must nuture their relationships with others as they would a garden. I really loved the inner meanings of the stories and how each was woven together in love and kindness, just as they cared for their garden.

I felt this was a very inspirational book and really enjoyed it as well as the happy feelings it shared.

I received an ebook copy from NetGalley. All thoughts are my own.

I really loved this Novella. My heart felt bad for Katie Ann. I still feel she was right for feeling the way she did. Maybe her delivery was wrong but she had a right to feel the way she did. I understand being in a new relationship and falling in love. But, Mandy was too caught up in her feeling for Ephraim. At the end of the day no relationship should cause you to lose focus on things that you committed too.

#2
I loved the story of Clara and Jerry. This story is a reminder that sometimes you have to listen carefully to GOD. You might think he is not speaking to you, but he is. It’s a whisper and you just have to open you heart to hear.

#3
I’m still enjoying this book and getting to know more about each character. I’m in awe of how a young group have come together to not only grow a garden, but to maintain it and donate money for a good cause. I’m still trying to warm up to Tena and what she went through. Looking forward to what’s to come for everyone for winter.

#4
I realized in the beginning that Ephraim was stubborn and didn’t want to see others views. He showed that when Katie Ann tried to express her feelings. My heart hurt for Mandy and what she was feeling. By the end of the book I couldn’t help but smile.

I give this book 5 stars. I enjoyed getting to know the characters. One thing I really enjoyed was that it was one book with 4 different stand alone novellas. However, each part tied in as one story with the same characters . Their garden not only helped others for a good cause. It brought 4 amazing couples together. At the end one of the couples asked her husband, who he thought would get married next. That’s a question I would love to know the answer too. I hope this isn’t the end of the Garden couples. I loved them all. Great book Amy Clipston.

Amy's book Seasons of an Amish Garden is a must read. In each story we are all taught a good lesson. In Spring Is in the Air Katie Ann learns that jealousy can almost ruin a friendship and that she was wrong in the end.
In Home by Summer Clara must have faith that Jerry will make the right decision. Turn prayer over to God.
In The Fruits of Fall Tena must learn to trust and forgive.
In Winter Blessings Mandy and Ephraim must learn to compromise in their relationship.
You will find yourself praying, laughing and crying with each story.

What a fun read by Amy Clipston! I loved how all four novellas were like a continuation of the characters each season and even a special kitty cat made an appearance. I enjoyed the seasons changing in the garden and how the characters changed as well with each season. The growth, love, and understanding that Amy Clipston incorporated in them shone through in her writing. Definitely a must read!

This was a very enjoyable set of stories! They were all the perfect length. All of the characters were real and relatable. I really enjoyed each story. They all faced different challenges on their lives and relationships. It was nice to see them turn to God to find healing and peace. I would love to see what comes next for all of them!

I enjoyed reading Seasons of an Amish Garden by Amy Clipston. It contains four novellas all by Amy. They focus around an Amish garden and an Amish couple and their friends. I found this novella to be a quick easy read. It held my attention from start to finish, I did not want to put it down. I suggest that others go get a copy. You are going to love it as much as I did.

A sweet collection of 4 stories spun-off from Amy Clipston's The Christmas Cat. I heavily suggest you read that novella first because it sets the background and tone for these four wonderful love stories.

Spring Is in the Air is about Katie Ann. She feels as if she losing her best friend and bother as they both find love with each other. Will Katie Ann find love as she learns to accept the changes life has to offer?

Home by Summer finds Clara learning what it means to love someone enough to let them find their own way back.

The Fruits of Fall is a heart-aching story about Tena. She finds herself afraid of Englishers after a terrible experience in her life. When a homeless man wanders up and asks for him she learns to face her fear head-on with the love and patience from Wayne.

Winter Blessings is the story of Ephraim and Mandy. When life starts throwing curve balls will their love be strong enough to withstand them?

I am a fan of Amy Clipston and Amish stories and Seasons of An Amish Garden did not disappoint. You will find yourself cheering on the couples as they learn about love and the work it takes for it to grow.

Perfect for any time of year read but get it now to ease yourself into 2019 with some love and happiness.

I've read several heavy-duty books in a row and needed to lighten up my reading. Seasons of an Amish Garden filled the bill perfectly. I love Amy Clipston's Amish fiction books and this olio of four novellas matches the quality of Amy's other writings--engaging, entertaining, and enriching for the soul.

There are four novellas to match the four seasons of the year and each novella focuses on one couple, and the obstacles that the couple has to overcome.

Katie Ann believes that Mandy's dating her brother is detrimental to their friendship. Her best friend has become forgetful of obligations because all she can see is Ephraim. When a new boy joins the group planting a garden in memory of a neighbor's husband, he just might be the distraction Katie Ann needs.

Clara and Jerry are becoming close, but Jerry isn't a member of the church yet.

Tena has been traumatized by an Englischer, but when one shows up, another of the group, wants to allow him to stay in Emma's barn. Tena can't get past what happened and is truly afraid, but Wayne wants her to trust him about the man.

Mandy and Ephraim are planning their wedding, but when Ephraim's sister and her husband show up to move into their parents' home, Mandy thinks this is the perfect time to move their wedding back a bit. She needs more time to plan and Ephraim thinks she just doesn't want to marry him anymore.

In the first novella, a sales stand is built to sell baked goods and vegetables. There are many cookies, brownies, pies, and other yums sold throughout the four stories and all the proceeds go to the local homeless shelter.

This is a relaxing read with five stars, two thumbs up, and a peanut butter pie for your honey.

My thanks to Zondervan publishing for allowing me to read and review this book.

Seasons of an Amish Garden by Amy Clipston is another outstanding read. I couldn't get enough of the characters. Inside this collection, I had four amazing stories. Each one featured a character from the previous story. I liked how each friend went through similar problems but went about them differently. Every character had a different personality and way of handling things that didn't make plots boring. Then, there was the emotional attachment to the protagonists, as well as the ones created by the writer's words. I fell in love hard and fast.

Sweet, heartfelt, and clean, Amy Clipston has won over my heart and soul with this Amish collection. As with any Christian fiction, there were many lessons, morals, and more Pennsylvania Dutch to learn. It was perfect.  Themes of friendships, friends to lovers, and finding their Amish faith again was fun to follow. Overall, I highly recommend this book to all readers.

I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.

Yay! A collection of just Amy Clipston’s novellas!! These are all connecting to her Christmas story, The Christmas Cat. It’s a novella featured in the anthology An Amish Christmas Love. It was so nice seeing those characters again!

Spring is in the Air: 4 stars

I really felt for Katie Ann - it’s never easy being a third wheel. She and Chris were so sweet and I like that he helped her deal with her feelings of resentment about her brother and best friend dating.

Home By Summer: 4 stars

I liked Clara and Jerry. Jerry was such a sweetheart, helping out the widow with tasks around the house. He and his sister had a nice relationship too.

The Fruits of Fall: 3 stars

I didn’t like Tena quite as much as Clara or Katie Ann. She was quite timid and scared of all non Amish people. I felt for what happened to her family, but I was glad wayne was able to change her viewpoint somewhat. I liked Alex, and the way that the group of friends came together to help him.

Winter Blessings: 3 stars

Probably my least favorite in the collection. The arguments between the couple were a bit over the top and neither one of them handled their disagreements well. I was glad that they got some good advice from their families and learned to work better together.

Overall a sweet collection of novellas. I liked that Emma’s garden played an important part in each story.

The Seasons of An Amish Garden is a collection of four stories written by Amy Clipston.
They include: Spring is in the Air, Home by Summer, The Fruits of Fall, and Winter's Blessings.
A group of young people, who live in Bird-in-Hand Pennsylvania decide to plant a garden in memory of Henry Bortrager and donate the proceeds from the roadside stand to Henry's favorite charity The Bird-in-Hand Homeless shelter.
More than flowers, vegetables, and fruit are grown while the young people plant, take care, sell, and harvest their crops. Love also grows for four different couples.
I found these heartwarming stories of romance to be very endearing and could not put the book down as I read how each couple's relationships grow while paying homage to a man that was well liked in their community. I had a hard time putting this book down, as I was anxious to see how each couples romance blossomed and grew like their garden

Seasons of an Amish Garden is a fantastic combination of four novellas written by Amy Clipston. Each story centers around a different season all involving gardens. Each story has inspiring characters and a wonderful message for the readers.

I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response and all opinions are my own. I have rated this book with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful book that I can highly recommend to others.

Seasons of an Amish Garden was an excellent read! The book is divided into 4 stories but each story includes the same characters that you get to know. But every story is from the point of view of a different person. It all starts out with planting a community garden to help the local homeless shelter. And in each of the 4 stories, you will see 4 couples fall in love during their involvement at the garden. Each story is about a different couple and how the garden brought them together. It was such a great read that I was finished in 3 days!

Spring Is in the Air: 2 stars
Home by Summer: 3 stars
The Fruits of Fall: 3 stars
Winter Blessings: 2 stars

Each story involves romance and a community garden. They are companion stories to The Christmas Cat. I liked the couples in all but the last story, but they are involved in the first story, too. I found them annoying. It made those stories unenjoyable. I like that each story has a happy ending. Even for the characters that I didn't like.

Beginning in one March, and following a group of friends through to the following March, this book watches as four couples go through transitions in each of the four seasons. It is divided into four short stories, where each story focuses on a different couple, and introduces new situations that I haven't seen in Amish fiction before. (Some had been touched on, but not made the central focus of the story.) My favorite was summer, and the most surprising story was winter -- it was a most unusual love story scenario. All in all, however, this is a set of stories that will make you sit back and examine yourself, your relationships, and your faith.

A group of young Amish adults work together on creating a memorial garden in Bird in Hand, Pennsylvania. They want the garden to help people. They decide that the produce they raise will be sold and the profits donated to the local homeless shelter. This story covers a year, all the seasons of a garden. As they work on their project they get to know each other better. And several people grow more than romance. They grow love.

Amy Clipston writes stories that capture the heart. Her characters are multifaceted and interesting. They have foibles. While the Amish live in simpler circumstances, they are not immune to envy, jealously, doubt and anger. In each season’s story an Amish couple must overcome difficulties in their lives. By listening to their friends, families, and faith, they are able to be happy.

There is a magic to Amy Clipston’s books. Read this book and if you haven’t read any other Amy Clipston books, go get those and read them too. You will be glad that you did.

This collection of stories is based off the novella the author wrote in An Amish Christmas Love, The Christmas Cat. A group of Amish youth are stranded at a widow's home during a storm and they enjoy getting to know her more and reminiscing about her husband. He had a special place in his heart for the local homeless shelter, so the youth decide to raise money to donate in his honor. In this book are four stories revolving around the garden and the young people who come together to take care of it. I love the concept, but some of the relationship drama seems immature and contrived. My favorite parts were with the widow, Emma, and her wisdom that she shares with her young friends.

These novellas were amazing!! Each story hooked me right from the beginning! However in the first and last story I wanted to smack Ephraim upside his head for being a stupid idiot!! Despite Ephraim being a stupid idiot in the first and last stories I absolutely loved these stories.

Four novellas about different Amish couples. Starting in the Spring, then Summer, Fall and Winter, the reader is lead through the misunderstandings, loves and pains of each couple, and since they are all friends, the reader sees the progress of each couple as it goes along as well. Fun to read, and while it is didactic at times, it is done well and not imposing. Highly recommend this book.

Regardless of my relationship with the author, this review reflects my honest opinions of the book. This novella collection, all by Amy, takes readers through creative stories as we follow a group of Amish young people through the four different seasons and the community garden they manage and harvest.

I think Amy Clipston is the reason I enjoy novellas so much. She has such a way of writing a novella that, although it is shorter than a full-length novel, she doesn't hold back on details that are critical to the story.

What I particularly loved about Seasons of an Amish Garden was the way each of the stories were connected. While different characters were the focus of each story, it was fun getting to see the same characters throughout this book, something you don't usually see with novellas.

Amy did a fantastic job, as she always does, of drawing me into the story. I enjoyed traveling through each of the seasons with these characters. It was fun getting to watch the characters grow and see their friendships develop. This was a very creative way to assemble a novella collection and it was one I enjoyed very much! Seasons of an Amish Garden by Amy Clipston is a beautiful collection of four novellas.
Spring Is in the Air, is the first novella in the collection. Katie Ann Blank enjoys being with her friends as they get together a few times a week and work on a community garden at Emma Bontrager's home. Katie Ann's brother, Ephraim and his girlfriend, Mandy, who is also Katie Ann's best friend, enjoy helping. Katie Ann can't help but feel like a third wheel around them. How could she ever tell them that? Perhaps with the help of a new special friend, Chris Lantz she will be able to.
The second novella is Home by Summer. Clara Hertzler enjoys helping at Emma Bontrager's community garden. One day she sees an old friend, Jerry Petersheim pull up to Emma's house in his truck. He decided to live the English lifestyle a few years ago. Clara has not seen Jerry in awhile, but right away their friendship is rekindled just like when they were in school. Could their friendship lead into anything more? What of Jerry's English lifestyle and Emma's Amish faith?
The Fruits of Fall is the third novella in this collection. Tena Speicher has recently moved in with her relative, Emma Bontrager after her fiancé, Lewis, broke off their engagement. Tena is making new friends at Emma's and a special young man, Wayne King has caught her eye. Alex McCormack, a homeless man, shows up one day at their community garden stand and Tena is very afraid of him. You will definitely want to read this novella to see what happens next with Tena, Wayne and Alex.
The final novella in this collection is Winter Blessings. Mandy Bender and Ephraim Blank are really looking forward to their upcoming wedding. Life circumstances change quickly and they are forced to reevaluate their relationship. Should Mandy and Ephraim continue with their engagement, or is friendship in their future instead?
Emma Bontrager's community garden brought these special friends together and you will most definitely enjoy reading about all of the precious memories made here.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from NetGalley and have given my honest opinion.

If you’ve followed my blog for sometime now, you’ll know that one of my favorite genres, outside of thriller novels, is Amish fiction. And, in that Amish Fiction, I have 5 top favorite authors. One of those is, without a doubt, Amy Clipston. I fell in love with her writing style and books way back when I read a book she did that wasn’t Amish fiction. Every time I pick up a novel by her, she sweeps me off my feet and puts me in the heart of the book, as she did with this new one.

This is a collection of four novellas. These novellas feature the characters from her novella in An Amish Love collection. Each story here brings us a different season, in which the garden that is planted will grow. Each story, each season, brings something new to the book, taking the reader on a whirl wind ride of love, hope, fun, and memories.

The characters that Clipston brings us back to, all feel like coming home to family. They are chiseled perfectly, their emotions radiating right off the pages. My personal favorite from this collection is Home By Summer, which is following Clara Hertzler and Jerry Petersheim. I loved the message woven into this particular story. Understanding, hope, and most of all, renewed faith in the Lord above. I felt so refreshed after reading their story!

Anything less than 4 stars for this captivating read, would be injustice. The pages of this book will pull you in, have you up late into the night, making new friends, and enjoying time with old friends. If you are looking for a book that will refresh your mind, your soul, and take you through the seasons of life, then grab a copy now. You will not be sorry, and if you’re new to Amy Clipston’s work, you’ll be a new fan, instantly! Amy Clipston, hats off to you, once again, for another collection of heartwarming stories that I won’t soon forget!
