Everything You Need: 8 Essential Steps to a Life of Confidence in the Promises of God

Rate this book
Many Christians feel unprepared and uncertain when it comes to living each day as followers of Christ. We often know what we are supposed to do, and even why we are supposed to do it. Yet when we lack confidence in ourselves and our spiritual development, we fail to live boldly as difference makers in our world.

As one of the world’s leading Bible teachers, Dr. David Jeremiah wants readers to know that this lack of confidence is both unnecessary and unhelpful. In fact, the Bible makes it clear that—in the same way skilled hikers pack all the necessary supplies before a journey—God Himself equips all believers with everything they need to walk and work with confidence as members of His kingdom.

Everything You Need continues Dr. Jeremiah’s focus on helping the church strive for spiritual victory through Christ. Using his signature depth, wisdom, and compassion, Dr. Jeremiah explores 2 Peter 1:5–10 to highlight seven critical tools God provides each of His people: virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. When we use the equipment God provides, we can live confidently in the knowledge that we will never stumble.

Dr. David Jeremiah, founder of Turning Point Radio and Television Ministries and senior pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church, felt God’s calling on his life at a very early age. Born February 13, 1941 in Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Jeremiah was raised in a family deeply committed to ministry. At the age of eleven, Dr. Jeremiah and his family moved to Dayton, Ohio where his father, Dr. James T. Jeremiah, was the Pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church, and in 1953 became the President of Cedarville College in Cedarville, Ohio.

As Dr. Jeremiah was sensitive to God’s leading in his life, he followed in his father’s footsteps. In 1963, Dr. Jeremiah received a Bachelor of Arts from Cedarville College. In that same year, Dr. Jeremiah married his college sweetheart, Donna Thompson who also was attending Cedarville College as a business major. He went on to earn a Masters degree in Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1967. He completed additional graduate work at Grace University and was granted the Doctor of Divinity degree from Cedarville College in 1981.

In 1969, Dr. Jeremiah began Blackhawk Baptist Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and developed a Christian school grades K through 12. In the 12 years he served as pastor, Blackhawk Baptist Church grew from 7 families to 1300 members. He also launched The Bible Hour television program.

Dr. Jeremiah heeded God’s call, and in 1981 he and his family moved to California where he became the senior pastor of Scott Memorial Baptist Church, now Shadow Mountain Community Church.

Shadow Mountain Community Church is one of the largest churches in San Diego County. It is also the home of Southern California Seminary and Christian Unified Schools.

As Dr. Jeremiah began his ministry at Shadow Mountain, he felt God’s calling to continue the broadcast ministry he started in Fort Wayne. In 1982, Turning Point Ministries became a reality.

Today, Turning Point's 30-minute radio program is heard nationally and internationally on over 1800 stations and translator/satellators. In recognition of Dr. Jeremiah’s commitment to teaching the Word of God, he received the Broadcaster of the Year Award in 1999 from the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB), in August 2002, received the Award of Merit from the Western Chapter of National Religious Broadcasters for Excellence in Broadcasting and Faithfulness in Service, and in 2006 Turning Point received the Best Radio Teaching Program Award. Dr. Jeremiah has served on the Board of Directors for the NRB since 1996.

Turning Point launched a television program in 1982 in San Diego and went nationwide in 2000. Now seen around the world through cable and satellite technology, as well as on terrestrial stations all across the United States, conservative estimates suggest that close to 200 million homes around the world have access to Dr. Jeremiah's Bible teaching each week. Turning Point Television offers a half-hour Bible study message and a full hour worship service with the same great preaching. Carried on several national and international networks such as TBN, ION, and INSP, Turning Point Television has most recently been added to Middle East TV Network and BET, the Black Entertainment Network.

Dr. Jeremiah is a sought-after conference speaker for organizations around the country. He frequently speaks at Cedarville College, Dallas Theological Seminary, Moody Bible Institute, Billy Graham Training Center, Phil Waldrep’s Senior Adult Celebrations and numerous NFL, NBA and Baseball chapels.

Along with his speaking schedule around the country, Dr. Jeremiah also finds time to fulfill another passion in his life, writing. His books are always gripping and right to the point. Some of his books include Escape the Coming Night, The Power of Encouragement, What the Bible Says About Angels, Prayer The Great Adventure, which brought him The Gold Medallion Award in 1998, God In You, Gifts from God

As always, I really enjoyed this book of Jeremiah's. More and more, I find myself appreciating the depth of insights, encouragement, and spiritual help that he packs into his books, and this one was no different. Though there was no Bible study included, like many of his previous books, I used it as one anyway, jotting down my favorite lines and reading one chapter a day. Each chapter focused on another quality (kindness, love, faith, etc.) we as Christians are called to develop in order to glorify God and draw others closer to Him, and they continually inspired and motivated to work on them. May I grow to show those qualities in my life! I'd definitely recommend this book.

This book was a gift from my Dad, who is a fan of Dr. David Jeremiah’s preaching. I figured we could read the book and then talk about it together. I would highlight some passages/scribble some notes in the margins as I read, and then text/call him about it.

The general structure of the book follows the passage 2 Peter 1:5-7 - "But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love." Every chapter is essentially a sermon reflecting on one of those virtues from the passage, so I would not personally read this book in one sitting. I think reflecting on the chapters and talking about it with someone is/was a good idea.

One thing that I was impressed by – Dr. David Jeremiah is very literate. He tied in innumerable examples from psychology books, other sermons, and pieces of fiction into this book, which I really appreciated. I would often stop reading this book to go look up a concept or add a book he references into my ever-growing Goodreads “to-read” pile. I also appreciated the sheer number of stories in the Everything You Need which illustrate the diversity and creativity with which we can serve God.

Here is a quote from Everything You Need which best explains the sentiment:
“If there are ten thousand maturing Christians in your city, there will be ten thousand maturing ministries for God’s glory, each unique. If there are five hundred maturing believers in your town, that’s how many personal ministries will develop. Each of us will be productive and fruitful as we develop the qualities Peter described. We can’t help it.”

I love this reading this author's books. His writing is so profound in scripture and always incites me to a more fervent desire to lead a more committed life for Christ. Also he has inspired me to start memorizing scripture so it becomes part of my mental meditation through out the day, as I have been memorizing 2 Peter 1,which this book is about. "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness" 2 Peter 1:3 this has now resonated in my soul that I can live a life pleasing to God ,especially in the ungodly times we live in right now. and then Peter tells us how through the other verses what steps to take. This is my 3 rd book by this author and another 5 stars. Keep on writing more books that will strengthen our faith to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Great read to give Godly outline on the 8 essential steps to a life closer and in confidence with God. While I enjoy Dr Jeremiah’s real life examples, there are just too many! Sometimes there’s enough in just God’s word rather than example (every single paragraph) about how the word is lived out today

Welcome to televangelism 101, where every page has an illustration that may or may not illustrate a point and every chapter is filled with platitudes and misapplication of Scripture. There's some encouragement here for sure, but it's 200 pages that could be 20, and it's got a lot of misleading things too so...skip this one.

God Gives You Everything You Need
David Jeremiah's "Everything You Need" is based on 2 Peter 1:3-11. As always, Dr. Jeremiah's depth of Biblical wisdom flows through each page as he examines seven critical tools God provides to each of His people: virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. The book is an incredible reminder to Christians that whatever you need is already stored away in the vault of Scripture, and you can open it with the key of faith. All the promises of God are available to enrich you and to meet all your needs. As he teaches, the author gives examples, stories, and illustrations that perfectly emphasize his points. This book touched my heart, made me want to improve my own walk with Christ, and build better relationships.

This book is based on the scripture 2 Peter 1:5-8. “...If these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. The verses prior are what makes the focus of this book: diligence, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. Jeremiah is very well-read. He quotes from several other books as well as stories from people he knows. I found this added a lot to the book. The stories were so interesting and had me googling for more information about them as well as adding more books to my to-read list. This book is best read in short bursts with time to reflect. I hadn’t heard of David Jeremiah prior to reading this book, but I will definitely be reading some of his other books.

Everything You Need is a thought provoking and engaging read. Dr. Jeremiah's passion on the subject is infectious and it pours from every page. His uses many illustrations to show the traits of 2 Peter lived out in every day life by normal people.
I enjoyed the way he delved into the passage as a pastor would, but yet kept the book informal and personal. This book was rich in both information and application of living a confident life in the God. It will definately be one that I read more than once.

I needed this book! What a refreshing and powerful book. The way Dr. Jeremiah intertwined scripture with personal stories and stories from other people was extremely well done and impactful.

I have been struggling with the idea that I have not loved the Lord with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength and this book was a wonderful encouragement and gave me the push to refocus my walk. His wonderful look at 2 Peter 1:3-4 and the life of Peter was extremely helpful and eye-opening for me in this particular point in my spiritual journey.

Read this book!

This was okay. I stopped about 100 pages in. I just started to feel like it was reading a little self help. There were good things and I found some of it helpful but I felt like it was becoming more focused on what I can start doing to improve on myself and I felt like there were times in it where I wish it talked more about relying on God more and the importance of a relationship with God to improve on things in my life. It just felt like it was missing some things for me.

What a blessing this book has been to myself and the small group which read this together. I read it via e-book, and have so many digital highlights, as well as a notebook full of life changing teachings. The author has a fantastic blend of Scripture, teaching, and everyday examples. All are very well thought out and arranged in an enjoyable and impactful read. One will not forget what is read and taken away after having finished. Highly recommended.

Once again, David Jeremiah has a winner. Using II Peter chapter 2 as the basis for this book Dr. Jeremiah covers the qualities that should be part of every Believer's life. Throughout the book are life stories of many people that enhance understanding of just how these characteristics should/can be used to further the Kingdom.

David Jeremiah is generally one of my favorite authors, but I found this book a little harder to follow. The point that I walked away with was I need to be intentional with my acts of love.

David Jeremiah generally has a lot of stories/illustrations, but this book had absolutely too many for my liking.

David Jeremiah’s books are all worthwhile reads.

He uses true life stories to illustrate the lessons he is teaching. His writing style is easy and enjoyable and not deep and technical. I have learned a lot by reading his books and have added to my faith in Jesus and Christianity.
