decided to start the year off by psychoanalyzing myself <3

to put it simply, this is exactly what i needed to read. as a lover of the enneagram, this was like food for my soul! i am a hardcore type 3 and the way that mccord goes into detail about why 3s do things the way they do or feel things the way they feel MAKES SO MUCH SENSE! i felt so incredibly validated while reading this that i just have to share a couple statements that really hit me hard.

“type 3s grew up believing that it was not okay to have their own feelings or identity. they sensed or were told that they needed to set aside their real selves to become successful and admirable. they inferred this message to mean, ‘you are what you do’. so they became fixated on performing and excelling so that others would see their accomplishments and express amazement. [...] they tended to show off and exaggerate their achievements to get applause and respect from others. if they didn’t tell someone about what they accomplished, then they couldn’t receive the praise they sought. type 3s are focused and competitive because they believe only winners are loved.”

“feeling that you can only be loved by being or appearing accomplished, you avoid failure at all costs. you will shape-shift into any image that helps you appear successful and hide anything that doesn’t conform to this image.”

“your deep fear of failing and being worthless or incapable causes you to struggle with deceit, hiding parts of yourself you don’t want others to see and displaying only a successful exterior. in doing so, you become unaware of who you are authentically in your own heart, which impacts your relationships- with others and with yourself.”

so basically...this entire book was a callout in the best possible way. and i love how interactive it is too! there’s lots of space for responding to prompts and jotting down your feelings! i highly recommend this series to anyone who wants to do some soul searching and loves the enneagram! great read to kick off 2022!

The enneagram is something my wife and I have been studying and learning for about two years. I am a 3. And for years I have been functioning in a very unhealthy way but could never put my finger on why. We have read .any books on this subject, and they have helped, but this one was so real and personal for me. This book is not something that you read, but it reads you. This book becomes a personal journal of your heart. The question are soul touching. This book makes me want to continue to read on my 3ness.

Really great prompts for reflecting on your strengths and weak points as an Enneagram 3. Everything is from a Christian perspective, so if that's not for you, be aware.

I would have preferred if an actual 3 had written something like this. It was pretty good overall, but it missed a lot of nuance and didn't explain things in a personal way. I know it's probably aimed at people who are beginners at the Enneagram so that's why it was more simple and less detailed, but if beginners feel like they can't relate to how the type is described it can leave them confused. Unfortunately I've seen a lot of that.

Personally, the book became more helpful to me about halfway through when it started talking about the different directions. There were good, useful tidbits and I definitely felt like I grew.

ON BRAND as the token 3w2 that i am, i am constantly devouring all the information i can get my hands about becoming an even better, polished version of Me™️.

this book is more on journaling prompts rather than info about enneagram type 3 (not groundbreaking), so i’d only really recommend this book if you plan to do some active self reflection and journaling. Please also note that the author speaks from a Christian perspective. Otherwise, i would highly recommend looking into “The Road Back to You” and “Personality Types” as they are more informative reads.

The book is broken up into small digestible chapters. There are questions with every chapter to help you process the material. I liked how brief the chapters were. I learned a TON about type 3s. Really enjoyed the questions at the end of each chapter. The layout of the book is aesthetically pleasing and I loved the graphics and charts.

This was FANTASTIC. I have been comfortable with the enneagram and my type for a long time, but this book was so well written. It gave real tactical advice for seeing growth, changing patterns in your life, and great examples and insights to really understand yourself. I will be sending this book (in their type) to my entire circle for SURE

An easy but thought-provoking read

I enjoyed the simplicity of this book. It was simple yet profound. I will be thinking about Beth’s descriptions for quite some time. I read this in Kindle, but would like to purchase a hard copy after reading this.

Helpful tool to bring more self awareness. Clearly stated that our core desire, fear, weakness, and longing can only be satisfied by the Lord. Wish there was more scripture in the book.

If this was the first Enneagram book that I have read, then it might be a better rating. There is a greater God-centered focus, which I enjoyed. Overall, it was similar information to all the other books about the Enneagram.

The analysis of 3's was very helpful, but relatively brief. The reason I rated the book lower was because clearly half of the content was boilerplate material that's included about generic enneagram material in every book of the series. The information is fine, but it felt like it inflated the length of the book, which is really more like a booklet.
