Dragon Ever After #4

Sleeping Dragon

Rate this book
Caleb’s no Sleeping Beauty. He’s a cursed prince determined to protect his kingdom from an evil enchantress.

Firstborn and Heir to the throne of Ardell, Caleb will do anything to save his kingdom and his parents.

Even if it means sacrificing himself to a dark curse.

Trapped within the spell, unmoving and barely aware of his surroundings, Caleb is resigned to his fate. Until a bold, half-fey princess frees him and gives him a second chance to confront the Grey Enchantress.

Exiled from her home and her sisters, Evie's been on her own for a long time.
Unwilling to sit in her cottage and knit away the days, she'd accepted a clandestine mission. One that fills her with purpose. One she'll see through to the end, no matter the cost.

Saving Caleb wasn't part of Evie's mission, but she didn't regret it.

At least, not until she realized the oath she made meant getting in the way of Caleb's only hope of defeating the Grey Enchantress.

If you're looking for a clean fairy tale fantasy romance featuring dragon-shifters, fierce princesses, adventure, magic and happily-ever-after, don't miss the entire Dragon Ever After series of re-imagined fairy tales.

A beautiful fairytale.
A truly beautiful tale this fantasy was a joy to read. It is the fourth book in the series and it has the charm of the first book and I think it was my favorite of all the books. Evie was a delight and Caleb was awesome too. The book had a sweet ending that I liked. This fantasy has it twists and turns that will keep you on your toes. The action was good and the outcome was great. I enjoyed the book and I am happy to recommend it. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

Content:

language: Mild. I think there were two mild swears in the whole thing.

Violence: Mild to barely there. Most of the book is peril, not actual violence, just the threat of the bad guy.

Sexual: Mild. There's chaste kisses/hand holding etc.

It's finally done. The bad guy got vanquished (no surprise) and all the princes of Ardell got their girls.

This book is about Caleb, heir to the throne and described by his siblings as the responsible, duty-driven one. The whole 'sleeping beauty' aspect of the story wasn't as long as I wanted it to be, it was only peripherally there, and it felt more like a forced thing so this could be touted as a Sleeping Beauty retelling.

Evie was okay, I would've liked more of her animal talking powers looked at, because that's fun and quirky. But there was too much to be wrapped up here to really delve into anything. This just felt all kinds of rushed and not well executed on a few levels.

The stakes never get raised much through the entire series, they just plateau and the princes go off to find their romantic interests while being all broody and intense (or trying to be) about what's going on back home and trying to rescue their kingdom/parents. The series is entirely focused on the romance, and the plot just seems to sit there as a background device so they have something to do while they dance around their romantic attractions.

The romances are pretty much the same each book: The two meet, one saves the other, then they have an 'inexplicable draw' towards each other that they don't understand and can't ignore. There is literally perhaps one or two sentences where the romance is actually more than just that vague 'there's something about him that pulls me in' thing. It's pretty boring.

If I wasn't intent on reading the Wolf books, and didn't have a thing about going in order, I'd never have finished this series.

Once again, I'm glad I found this author's later books first because they are waaaay better (though definitely still not perfect) than these early series. Seeing the author's growth is actually the fun of reading through this in order for me right now. That's pretty awesome to see.

An entangled tale.

This truly is a well thought out detailed tale of magical beings adventure and never ending drama with mystery and suspence woven into all the different kinds of magic and spells that seem to be tcentral to this amazing series.
Ms Amberley Holland is an author who has the uncanny ability to describe both the power of a spell the mystery that surrounds it and the detailed effect that spell or the magical influence that causes the spell to work, in such a way that as the reader you could almost believe what she is describing is true.
That being said this same scenario can be applied throughout this whole tale as Ms Holland certainly does not hold back when it comes to the intricate detailed needed to express information about the surrounding area the characters were in or giving us detailed information about each character as they learn about the world they have been dropped into and the people they must fight against while understanding themselves as they grow into different people with powers or strengths and learn who they care about who they will become and who their lifelong partners could be.
Honestly, it's as detailed as Lord of The Rings, including having an evil sorcereress, who tries to claim all the power for herself.
Without giving too many actual details away if you enjoy fantasy and paranormal romance, then the combination of both will keep you smiling throughout the four book series that this tale revolves around.
You will find it hard to put this magical mysterious adventure down.

3.5 stars.

After the disappointing 2nd and 3rd installments, I am happy to report that the last book in the Dragon Ever After series has brought back the magic of the first--somewhat. The writing still needs work: the exposition gets repetitive, and there are far too many choppy, run-on sentences--though I understand they are being used for dramatic effect. At least the pacing works much better compared to the previous two books, where the scenes were bogged down by exposition. Here, the exposition still drags a bit, but the dialogue is slightly improved. Fight scenes are still confusing, though. The romance has also improved: while it's still insta, at least Caleb and Evie's connection makes some sense, unlike Haddon and Pip (they were far too sudden and completely out-of-nowhere).

There's a lot more that I wish could be improved upon in this series (and loose ends that haven't been addressed), but I am happy that the main conflicts have been resolved. And a good HEA with no eye-rolling moments! (That was my biggest gripe with book 1.) Also I'm in a good mood, which certainly helps with the rating.

Final note: This book seriously needs proper labeling with the correct series and book number. I was barely able to find it using the regular search menu.

Sleeping Dragon
By Amberley Holland.

This truly is a well thought out detailed tale of magical beings adventure and never ending drama with mystery and suspense woven into all the different kinds of magic and spells that seem to be central to this amazing series.
Caleb heir to the throne of Ardell has again found himself to be in the hands of the mystical Grey Enchantress who is determined to destroy everyone within his family due to her own evil ideas and wishes, Caleb knew the chance he was taking but never expected to be turned into a living statue, one that could not be changed back to himself easily will another powerful being be able to help??
Evie and her sisters found that the power’s they developed did not play well together so the family had to go their supper ate ways, to keep each other safe, their own magic could cause destruction to each other so separation was their only option.
Hiding in the forest from soldiers, Evie heard them talking about taking the statue to the Enchantress, so knowing who they were talking about, she steals the wagon and helps Caleb get free from his prison.
Never having thought he would find someone who could capture his attention, Caleb is amazed when this stunning smart witch catches his eye. Little does he know this witch has a story of her own.
Without giving too many actual details away if you enjoy fantasy and paranormal romance, then the combination of both will keep you smiling throughout the four-book series that this tale revolves around.
You will find it hard to put this magical mysterious adventure down.

Fun finale!

Sleeping Dragon is the fourth and last in Ambeelyn Holland's Dragon Ever After series. I did not read the other three. I found that I could follow the action of this one reasonably well anyway, although it was clear that there was a lot of action before. I received the book free and I suppose the rationale was that was to make the reader want to go back and purchase the others. While I found this one a fun way to spend a couple of hours, I didn't feel any need to read the others. As a marketing strategy, I would say it would have been better to give away the first book.
There was an interesting low-key romance of the insta-love type as well as lots of fighting and so forth. I personally preferred Melissa McShane's far more intense dragon series, but the true dragon fan will want to add this one to their library.

This final installment in the Dragon Ever After series was just as charming as the rest--and possibly my favorite story in the series. It is challenging for Sleeping Beauty to be an engaging story, but Evie's unique power as cursebreaker made her dedication to helping Caleb make sense. I really liked the characters in this one and how Caleb is an active part of the story even as he is cursed to "sleep" by the villian of the series. It cleverly tied the various fairytale elements together, leading to an HEA I could believe in (sometimes a challenge for a sleeping beauty story) If you like dragons and gender swapped fairytales, this series checks all the boxes.

This author has given me the pleasure of reading this ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. I will tell you, from the very start the excitement builds as Evie plans to rescue a captured prince. How will her magic save him against the Evil Valia, and how will she free the world from this empress who can turn royalty to stone. Be prepared for many twists and turns, nail biting moments and fairytale romance. A must read

A great story. It was quite entertaining to watch Evie and Caleb dance around each other due to the secrets that each one holds. Plenty of harrowing combat scenes enfold. Several of the other favorites of the series made delightful cameo appearances. And, as to be expected, the ending is oh so sweet.

Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Happily Ever After. Haunting. Inspirational. Romantic. Scary. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.

It wasn't Bad. The conclusion of the overarching plot was somewhat satifsying. Still I felt something was missing. There are epilogues, but You have to sign up to the author's newsletter to get them. I don't want them that badly.
There was some chemystry between MCs, but still the first Kiss came out of nowhere, and from then on things felt a bit forced in the romance department. All in all, a nice, quick read to spend an afternoon.

A fast paced adventure

This is the first book I've read in this series and I wish I read them in order. While it can be read as a stand alone tale, I did feel in the beginning that I was on the outside and had to play catch up. Though I will admit, the author did a great job of filling in the pertinent information, I find myself wanting the other stories. This was a fast paced and intriguing adventure, and a good read.

Interesting

Even though this book is obviously part of a series, and not the first, didn't detract from the story. I haven't read any of the others, but I expect I wouldn't get so much repetition that I would feel I already knew rhe stories told.

I liked the main characymyers, I liked the way their story was told without too much miscommunication as is iften the case with a romance story.

Entertaining and whitty.

Cute whitty story. Pulled me in and kept me engaged. Loved the characters. Some bits a bit sappy but clean. It ends predictably but still good. Quick easy read.

Themes of curses, exile, siblings, family, betrayal, treasure hunts, explorers, dragons, wolves, magic, love. Breaking curses.

Great ending to the series. One last romance, between Caleb (the eldest prince of the 3 brothers) and Evie (the youngest triplet). All is wrapped up with the final battle against the grey enchantress, and sisters reuniting.

This is a nice fairytale and pretty well written. It’s okay and a nice read but it didn’t grab and hold on like I want a fantasy to.
