Magic Blood: The Warlock #2

Mages and Masquerades

Rate this book
Time is ticking, lives hang in the balance.

I traded in my life of magic and demon hunting for a quiet one a long time ago. In the space of a couple of nights, I've become homeless, jobless, and I'm now hiding from people who want to open a back door to Hell itself. Things could be worse; I could be alone, too, instead I'm rooming up with the sexy mage, Levi, and that's been... interesting. Then one night I get a phone call from out of nowhere, and suddenly we have a lead on the book we've been looking for; or an invitation into a trap.

Never one to take my own best advice, I spring into the lead head-on and go where it takes me, because the fate of London and the whole of the British Isles is at stake if I don't find that book. Good thing I used to be the best demon hunter in the entire United States; I'm gonna need every ounce of training if I'm going to succeed.

Teaming up with Tansey Morgan, author of the hit series "The Last Serpent", Katerina Martinez is back doing what she does best; writing gripping, action-packed urban fantasy you won't want to put down. If you like snark, danger, action, and romance with a bit of bite, this book is for you!

Great sequel! Hailey, Levi and the gang are back trying to deal with the fall out of this book that was stolen. We also meet someone from Hailey's past that joins them in their mission to get the book back. I'm excited to see what happens next.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Great addition to this new series written by two amazing authors. Hailey is back dealing with all of the issues that come after losing the book they needed so badly. What follows is a complicated mix of twists, turns, and surprises that will keep you guessing as the story unfolds. Wonderful read that I highly recommend to fans of the genre. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Yeah…. Nothing happens in this book. Just a group of magical operating people chasing down some leads to get to some powerful book and every one of them has issues… It was incredibly dry to sit through with all the action and the looming danger and the tension I just did not feel connected to. These people are fully engaged in what they are doing to secure what? Safety of humanity against demons? The stakes seemed hard to register. They are just a gang of fledgling magic users being lead by a battle and life scared mage through some trials to get to some very powerful magical book. And all of that summed up should promise a lot right? But when put into practice story-wise it hardly delivers….

The h keeps everyone at arm's length and keeps disparaging their lack of experience and know-how. She does not want to be their leader and I can guestimate that she gets all grumpy when she recognizes that some heavily invested leadership will whip these magical people into fighting shape. And cuz she bucks at that responsibility or getting so emotionally invested in this group of people after what happened to her sister she resents them all for expecting her to have all the answers and guide them through all of this. But also does not let them have enough say in how things should be done cuz they lack the know-how to know any better. So this creates some team tension and instead of things being focused on the action at hand I as a reader only want the h to get her head out of her ass. She is a natural-born leader and if she does not take full charge of these people they are all gonna just end up causing a lot of harm to each other.

These scars from the past just keep weighing her down and in turn, they seem to weigh the story down as they do not contribute to any kind of progression or catharsis for the h to admit all these feelings out loud and move on with what she needs to do there, action-wise. There is an attempt at some sort of romantic interest between h and Liam character, I guess that is the potential H, that is muddied by bringing in a third for their potential love triangle with the appearance of an ex. I just don't see the point in him being there either. He brings nothing to the story and just delays any potential bonding between the h and H and with her future team as well as he just dredges up all these emotions from her previous life.

Again when spelled out like this all of that seems rife with tension and great story build-up, but it just seemed dry as one of their English biscuits. I could not connect with any of it. I wish I could better pinpoint why this did not work for me, it just didn't. It had great potential. But as it is I am slowly contemplating on giving up on this series the more the story goes on.

Hailey, Levi and the rest of the gang are back but are dealing with the aftermath of the situation of losing the book to Delilah and her demon friend. Hailey has managed to lose everything in a matter of 48 hours. Her apartment is no longer safe as she believes Brutes are sitting on it or nearby waiting to grab her and she’s had to walk away from her job. She walked away from demon hunting two years ago after suffering a huge loss, but demon hunting isn’t done with her, not by a long shot. Now the game is on to somehow reacquire the book that was stolen so that they can keep more Hell Holes from being opened and more demons released upon the world. Seems pretty cut and dry right? Should be pretty straightforward…if only it was.
Mages and Masquerades by Tansey Morgan Katerina Martinez will grab you from the beginning and keep you page-turning for a good while. Hailey is in need of some money so she does what she needs to do to get some. Of course, this also means reaching out to someone she cut off two years ago. Mason…and they have history together. I’m thrilled with how gripping this story starts off, but it does slow down a bit, but don’t worry the pace picks back up in the right places. I have to admit I was waiting on the tension to make a show between Hailey and a couple of the other characters and the authors don’t fail to disappoint. Of course, there is drama and tension between more than just Hailey and this one character. The authors give us romantic tension, history tension and so much more. So this keeps the story moving and engaging. I love the layers of this story and how well done it is.
There isn’t really anything that I don’t like about this book. It is well done from start to finish. I like how the characters come together and the surprises that the authors write into this book. Once again the authors do a beautiful job working together seamlessly to make this book truly enjoyable. I will admit that I was disappointed that the phone call doesn’t result in the meeting I was expecting, but it works nonetheless.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. The authors have written another engaging addition to this series and I look forward to the next as the drama and suspense build as does the romance. I can’t wait for the next book!

This book starts where Demons and Deception finished, with Hailey having left her home because it's not safe but more importantly to her, she's had to cut her ties to her beloved library.
We learn more about her back story with the introduction of a new character from her past, a sarky, sexy, smirky man who could definitely light a fire or two, who ends up involved in Hailey's hunt for the book she lost in Demons and Deception. We also learn more about Levi and his past when he and Hailey trade confidences.
The action is a little slower than in the first book but it ratchets up towards the end, at a very swanky house on the River Thames, when a new villain pits himself against Hailey. I love his name and am sure that we will see more of him, not least because all Hell could be breaking loose soon, quite literally.
We also get to see more of the Eyes - Morpheus, Ivy and Tank - and their talents. They are great sidekicks for Hailey and Levi and I love Tank with his 'as long as I can punch someone, I'm in' attitude.
I like the way Katerina and Tansey have interwoven their own writing strengths together, using the types of mages from Tansey's Harlequin Harem world and expanding on them. Warlocks, Scions, Elemancers, Shades, Seers, mages galore and you'll just have to read this series and the Harlequin's Harem series to find out about their talents.
Now I just need the next book to see where Hailey and her gang go from here. Bring on the mayhem!

This book has everything I’ve come to love and expect from these authors, along with several twists I never saw coming. I was already head over heels in love with the first book, and this one managed to be bigger, badder, and better than that one. The story kept me glued to the pages to the point where I had to finish it in a single sitting. In it, we get to learn things about Hailey and Levi’s pasts and start to see some visions of what the future might hold. This story combines both urban and epic high fantasy in a compact morsel that, while satisfying, still left me craving more. I’m dying to get my hands on the next book now.

This series just keeps getting better and better with the addition of this second book. Tansey and Katerina are the dynamic duo teaming up to write this entertaining series. It is well written and they really compliment each other.
I love the addition of the new character Mason and the insight his appearance gives to Haileys past. I really like the tension between Levi and Hailey... will they or won’t they? Maybe we’ll find out in the next book. I love the ride of twists and turns that the authors take you on with the addition of a second grimoire and the uncertainty of why exactly Cerberus wants it. All in all, it was a fantastic book... book three is going to be epic.

Serial success

Katerina and Tansey make an entertaining, exhilarating writing team. This series flows and the dialogue is so true to the characters. I have empathy for these people, some, not so much. The tensions ratchet up, way up I in this installment, keeping yo you on the edge of your seat. That seat, however, is fastened in a mine cart careening about in the dark just over the ceiling of Hell. Katerina Martinez writes so smoothly about the lives of supernatural beings I'm beginning to question their existence. And what is she?

This book is the prime example of how to write action. There is such amazing fight scenes. I was just hooked on the first word. And, the chemistry between the hero and heroine are amazing. I love how there is a slow-burn feel of their relationship. Romance comes second, and fighting comes first. Usually, I don't read books with a lot more fighting than romance, but Morgan does a great job. The slashing, weaponry, and fight scenes have amazing technique. This is a great urban fantasy novel. I cannot recommend it enough.

This is my honest and unbias opinion of the story. This was an amazing story to read it is book number two in the series. I so fell in love with book one in the series so I am so in love with this story with all the twist and turns it kept me on the edge of my seat. I highly recommend this book to all and if you happen to but it you won't be disappointed at all trust me you fall in love with it like I did.

I’m really enjoying these quick stories, this new friend group is fun and each character has different unique abilities and strengths that they bring to the group.

I’m not huge into the love triangle but her ex gives us glimpses into who she use to be before she left the US and her old life behind.

We got to meet a new evil villain that we didn’t know much about or what his plans are but I can only assume we will be seeing much more of him.

The second book in this series kicks off with a bang and made me love Hailey even more...she is pretty kick ass!! Mason is a great addition and it is funny how they both are together, pretty realistic I think. Then we add in the other exciting characters, especially Levi, and it is another great book by these talented authors! I loved learning more about Hailey and Levi’s background but this book is a bit slower pace than book one, which is fine and left me wanted book three so I could see what happens next. Great series!

This book starts out exciting and ends even more exciting. The group is starting slowly to come together and try working with each other. Add in an old friend, an unknown foe, and I am excited to see where this series will go.

Book two was much more awesome than book one, I think! Mason was a great character edition. There was more action and excitement in this one as well. We got to learn a bit more background on our MC. Definitely a great continuation of this series and I am most excited to see where it is headed!

Mages and Masquerades is such a fast paced and fun book to read. Hailey and Levi along with some friends are in search of a book that seems almost impossible to find, until they finally catch a break. Awesome storyline and characters, looking forward to the next book.
