CapStone Conspiracy #1

CapWar Election

Rate this book
A spellbinding political thriller from the USA Today bestselling author of The Last Librarian.

Deception. Mass surveillance. Fraud.
Manipulation. Assassination. Revolution.
The CapStone conspiracy has finally gone too far.

Hudson Pound, a common man with no political ambitions and no baggage, seemed the perfect candidate. They were convinced he could easily be controlled. They were wrong. The next presidential election . . . Time to run!

The media loved him, the public was enthralled, everything went his way—flawless, as if scripted. Yet his past loomed heavy, the compromises stacked up, and the truth threatened to crush him. While the all-or-nothing race meant life or death, "running” took on new and dangerous meanings. With stakes so high, winning the election might prove more important than staying alive. There can be only one winner in the CapWar.

What if your vote really doesn't count? You aren't truly free? And your life is being manipulated? The truth is a bigger lie than you can believe. The truth is you believe it anyway.

This riveting political financial thriller will appeal to fans of Vince Flynn, Daniel Silva, David Baldacci, Tom Clancy, Brad Thor, Lee Child, Andrew Peterson, Brad Taylor, Clive Cussler, L.T. Ryan, and Nelson DeMille. Start the ELECTION, get the EXPERIENCE, build the EMPIRE.

Brandt Legg

USA TODAY Bestselling Author Brandt Legg uses his unusual real life experiences to create page-turning novels. He’s traveled with CIA agents, dined with senators and congressmen, mingled with astronauts, chatted with governors and presidential candidates, had a private conversation with a Secretary of Defense he still doesn’t like to talk about, hung out with Oscar and Grammy winners, had drinks at the State Department, been pursued by tabloid reporters, and spent a birthday at the White House by invitation from the President of the United States.

At age eight, Legg's father died suddenly, plunging his family into poverty. Two years later, while suffering from crippling migraines, he started in business, and turned a hobby into a multi-million-dollar empire. National media dubbed him the “Teen Tycoon,” and by the mid-eighties, Legg was one of the top young entrepreneurs in America, appearing as high as number twenty-four on the list (when Steve Jobs was #1, Bill Gates #4, and Michael Dell #6). Legg still jokes that he should have gone into computers.

By his twenties, after years of buying and selling businesses, leveraging, and risk-taking, the high-flying Legg became ensnarled in the financial whirlwind of the junk bond eighties. The stock market crashed and a firestorm of trouble came down. The Teen Tycoon racked up more than a million dollars in legal fees, was betrayed by those closest to him, lost his entire fortune, and ended up serving time for financial improprieties.

After a year, Legg emerged from federal prison, chastened and wiser, and began anew. More than twenty-five years later, he’s now using all that hard-earned firsthand knowledge of conspiracies, corruption and high finance to weave his tales. Legg’s books pulse with authenticity.

His series have excited nearly a million readers around the world. Although he refused an offer to make a television movie about his life as a teenage millionaire, his autobiography is in the works. There has also been interest from Hollywood to turn his thrillers into films. With any luck, one day you’ll see your favorite characters on screen.

Legg now writes full time – his favorite endeavor ever! For more information, visit BrandtLegg.com, or to contact Brandt directly, email him: Brandt@BrandtLegg.com, he loves to hear from readers and always responds!

***** Another Great One!

Let’s face it. There are page-turners, and there are page-turners. But what I have always appreciated about Brandt Legg’s books is he gives us that and so much more. Along with believable characters, great plots, and well-written prose, there’s sure to be a depth to his books, be it technical know-how verbiage, researched weapon terminology, or police and security methods. In this book, he once again shines, as he lets us in on a dirty political network filled with cover ups, terrorists, and conspiracy; a frighteningly real web that discloses an unqualified presidential candidate, the true underbelly of politics and ultimately, how human lives are completely expendable. A great read!

This book is an exciting ride from the first page until the very last.

The thing is, CapWar Election is almost too close to home to be comfortable. With so many still at odds with each other over the last presidential election this book will make you think. Are we really in control of who becomes the president of the United States or are there powerful men back behind the scenes pulling all of the strings?

Author, Brandt Legg will make you stop and think while he takes you the ride of your life. That is the true of sign of a great writer.

I want to read more of this story, so I will get the next in the series. I admire the way the author has made the characters so real that it is easy to follow their emotions and relate to them. The storyline is so evocative of today's events and the politics that have become so oppressive. It's a very timely novel and at the end, it gave me hope for tomorrow, which is saying something significant. There's not enough positive floating around these days. While there was a good amount of evil deeds in the reading it basically set the tone for bringing about redemption that has to come from the main character. This is one reason why I want to read the next book in the series. I want to see if he can pull it off.

CapWar Election, the first book in this series blew me away. It’s a political thriller with genuine thrills. A hardware store owner accepts an opportunity to become the next president and his life is forever changed. Action, conspiracy, dark secrets, and even murder, combine to make this one of the most exciting books I’ve read lately. The story haunted me long after I finished reading. I’m looking forward to book two.

If a reader likes political conspiracies and the good guys (maybe) trying to defeat those who want to have government on their own terms, this novel is right in your wheel house.

My only problem with it is it's a continuing story. I may or may not continue on. Too many books to read to get tied up with a continuing, never ending story.

CapWar Election is not meant to be provocative, but even if you take it as mere fiction, it stirs through raises a lot of “what if” questions. What is the meaning of leadership, when a a bought-and-paid-for politician arrives at a position of power? Can such a leader find the courage to break away from the corruptive forces to which he owes his position? Can he chart an independent course of action, for himself and for the nation? “He had to stop them. There was to much to fix. He had to live.”

Written in fast pace, dynamic style, this political thriller has suspenseful ups and downs: assassination attempt, media attack on the private life of the candidate” “turns out not many people have a perfect family. it’s yet another reason for the electorate to identify with Hudson Pound, the everyman candidate.” There is also a faltered performance at a crucial debate. “With just days before the country voted, Hudson lost his first debate.”

Looking forward to read the next book in this exciting new series.
Five stars.

Election - An Absolute Thriller

I have never found a book by Brandt Legg that I haven't loved to read and my only criticism is the feeling of loss when the final book in each series ends. I want to scream and cry with the feelings of loss that runs through me. I am never prepared for the books to end, it feels as if a close friend has just died unexpectedly.
The only way I have of getting through my personal feelings of loss is to start reading another series that Brandt Legg has written.
This story of an election is the first in the CapWar series and is written in the same marvelous style that only Legg can master!
ENJOY!!

Very good read.

Good even-paced read. Kept my interest. Believable characters-not prepackaged or out of a can. Would definitely recommend for a fresh look at the genre.

‘We have it in our power to begin the world over again.’ – Thomas Paine

One of the reasons author Brandt Legg has been so successful in his writing and publishing and selling his ten books to date is his magisterial management of his website. From his biographical data we learn that he is ‘a former child prodigy who turned a hobby into a multi-million dollar empire. At eight, Brandt's father died suddenly, plunging his family into poverty. Two years later, while suffering from crippling migraines, he started in business. National media dubbed him the "Teen Tycoon," but by the time he reached his twenties, the high-flying Legg became ensnarled in the financial whirlwind of the junk bond eighties, lost his entire fortune . . . and ended up serving time in federal prison for financial improprieties.’ Or as Brandt shares, ‘Twenty-five years ago, sitting in a hot, humid federal prison cell in Virginia, I first dreamed of being not just a writer, but a writer who could earn a living, support a family and keep writing. But I had dropped out of high school, having only completed tenth grade English. As I sat on that metal cot, penniless and heavily in debt, with almost a year left on my sentence, it seemed an impossible dream. Still, for more than two decades, while doing everything but writing, I somehow kept the dream alive. Amazon's KDP changed everything.’ One year later he began anew in retail and real estate. In the more than two decades since, his life adventures have led him through magazine publishing, a newspaper column, photography, FM radio, CD production and concert promotion.’ He is also a gifted landscape photographer.

At first glance it appears that CapWar ELECTION is extremely timely, reflecting the nation’s political corruption and fake news and the onerous man at the top. Brandt offers a word about this book before the story begins: ‘Because the world seems so polarized these days, and so much becomes political, I thought it would be a good idea to say a few words up front. This is a political thriller. It is fiction. I do not necessarily agree with the views of the characters in the story. The action takes place during the next presidential election, sometime after Trump. As much as possible, I tried to avoid current politics.’

Another of the reasons Brandt’s thrillers/suspense novels work so well is his ability to subtly let us in on the tenor of the tale from the first few paragraphs – ‘The five individuals had flown separately on private jets to the remote island. No one knew they were there. Each of them had obtained a certain amount of fame, and were used to seeing their names in the media. However, if their attendance were to be discovered, it would not only be disastrous for their reputations, but would also likely mean a long prison sentence. They sat at the large, round, Bolivian rosewood and mahogany table adorned with an inlaid, classic map compass of holly and ebony. “Thank you for coming,” one man said, framed by the floor-to-ceiling windows providing a 360-degree view of the Pacific. “We all know the dangers we face. We have planned and built NorthBridge for several years, using every form of secrecy technology there is. Now we’re ready. From this moment forward, we shall only address each other as our member names, our ‘also known as’ identities. I am, as you know, AKA Washington.” “There’s no chance the NSA, or anyone else, for that matter, can listen in on us?” AKA Hancock asked. “Not here,” AKA Washington assured him, also making eye contact with each of the others. “Now, it’s time for the final vote. Our point of no return.” “Because we’re talking about more than protesting the government,” said AKA Jefferson, one of the two women present. “This is about civil war, revolution . . . overthrowing
the United States government.” AKA Washington nodded. “I thought we were planning to avoid violence,” AKA Adams said, clearly trying not to sound argumentative. AKA Hancock laughed. “That will not be possible.” “There have been other successful transitions that occurred without violence; the People Power Revolution in the Philippines, the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia, the Rose Revolution in the nation of Georgia—” “Tiny countries removing dictators,” AKA Hancock interrupted. “We’re going to take over the world’s oldest democracy, a nation with the most powerful military the planet has ever known.”

As Book 1 of his CapStone Conspiracy series Brandt’s synopsis pulls the story together well: ‘The most tumultuous US presidential election in history, the worst-ever domestic terror threat, and corruption strangling the very heart of America’s democracy . . . it is all insignificant as the CapStone conspiracy threatens everything. What if you could become President of the United States? What would you be willing to do for the power? What if there were no choice? Hudson Pound, a common man with no political ambitions and no baggage, seemed the perfect candidate. They were convinced he could easily be controlled. They were wrong. By the time he understood, and they realized their mistake, it was too late. The truth is your vote doesn’t count. The truth is you really aren’t free. The truth is a bigger lie than you can believe. The truth is you believe it anyway. The truth hurts . . . especially when it lies.’

Read one of Brandt’s novels and it is likely you’ll reach for the next in sequence. Fine writing in a genre that often leaves us wanting more. Brandt supplies it.

Enter the Washington Club where the world's richest players compete to win. Their bet- "President of the U.S.A". Where powerful Rooks, Bishops and Knights are in play, a pawn is persuaded to become the King. The pawn is your average American Joe with no political experience, caught in the maelstrom. Throw in domestic terrorism who are so powerful they assassinate presidential candidates and to bring down the corrupt political system and all hell breaks loose.

CapWar ELECTION
by Brandt Legg

One of the most amazing books I have read in a long time.

For fans of conspiracy and politics this will certainly not disappoint - it is dynamic from beginning to end.

After reading many other book sets from this author, I was keen to get to grips with this one. I am so glad I did and now I can't wait to get hold of the nest in this series.

In our current times of political confusion... this is a masterpiece!

Not one to miss and highly recommended.

An unexpected candidate runs for the Republican Party in the U.S. Presidential elections – no, it’s not a documentary of recent events in the States, ones which we are all only too familiar with, but the premise of Brandt Legg’s latest trilogy. Author Legg sets the events in a post-Trump era where he places an unsuspecting and innocent hardware store owner, Hudson Pound, in the hands of a billionaire who wants to make him the leader of the free world. As the events proceed, Pound comes under attack, literally and figuratively, on his electoral road, which leads to some intense action scenes throughout.

The novel takes the reader on a fast-paced journey of deception and conspiracy as the protagonist and his immediate family discover the realities behind what they thought was a democratic system designed to elect the best man for the job. Add in a mysterious extremist terrorist group, which will stop at nothing to influence the results, and a dangerous personal secret Pound and two childhood friends try to keep the ever-vigilant Press, and his political opponents, from finding out, and the level of intrigue and skulduggery keep the pages turning in this tense thriller.

Like his other three series, this, book one in the ‘Capstone Conspiracy’ series, will become a must-read for fans of Legg’s novels. More than just a run-of-the-mill political thriller, ‘CapWar Election’ takes a hard and critical look at real events and questions the understanding most of us have about the way the U.S. electoral system works, whilst at the same time entertaining us with a cracking tale of corruption and double-dealing. You will find you will be thinking about this one even after the novel is finished. A great read: I’ve already started book 2.

What if every American's coveted privilege of voting a candidate into office was just pure hog wash? What if secret groups actually had the power over voters to control the outcome of an election and the economy? The day Hudson Pound went to his bank for an extension of his business loan was the last day he would be known simply as Hudson Pound, hardware store owner and local hero. That day unbelievably propelled him into being a Republican Presidential candidate at the behest of the powerful millionaire, named Arlin Vonner.
Once the candidacy gets under way, the candidates start dropping like flies, at the hands of an evil domestic terror group claiming responsibility. Add to that Pound's skeletons from his childhood, a meddling popular reporter and you have all the goods for great read! Brandt Legg has written a BRILLIANT Grisham-type political thriller in CapWar Election that will make your head swirl with questions and similarities to what is actually going on in our government today. Thank goodness book 2 in this series is out. I give this masterpiece five well earned stars! A MUST read!

I am a big fan of Brandt Legg and was looking forward to this book coming out.

Hudson Pound, an unsuspecting hardware store owner, is a puppet candidate in the U.S. presidential elections. The man pulling the strings, a billionaire, is looking for someone he can control in the office of the President, and Hudson fits the bill.

This is a fast-paced story with numerous plots and characters, a gripping thriller that kept me glued to the pages. As always Brandt Legg pulled me into his protagonists minds, as they weaved their way through a minefield of corruption and deceit, terrorism and power struggles.

it is an eye-opening story, capturing the imagination, but at times crossing lines of fiction and reality. Don't miss it. Highly recommended.

Can't say enough about this book. It's a thriller without scaring me to death, However it is keeping me awake reading, and interfering with my work as I take every spare minute to read. Also, I'm grabbing every commercial break to catch a few more pages. I even have my face buried in the book as I walk on the treadmill. Golly, Mr. Legg, you are a big distraction here.
The forward warns us that we may be offended by the political views of some of the characters. Not to worry--so far, I'm fine.
Author Brandt Legg has tackled a difficult subject--politics. He lays out what might happen down the road during an American presidential election if we Americans continue on our current divisive path.. That, my friends, is scary.
Brandt obviously knows a thing or two about politics. You will recognize composites of all your favorite political "types," as well as touches of James Bond. As a political junkie, myself, I'm enthralled by this fictional story, which is all too true in places.

Being a huge fan of author Brandt Legg, I was thrilled to see this new novel available. As a conspiracy enthusiast myself this story drew me in like bees to honey! This is a fast paced thriller set in the future and focuses on a most politically charged presidential race. One innocent man will be sucked into government control and the tragedies and chaos that ensue from this election. Legg really showcases his talents here as a master of a potential best selling political thriller.

CapWar Election was my first book by Brandt Legg. I was absolutely hooked, couldn’t stop reading, and am itching to get the next book in the series.

I’m normally a mystery reader, but CapWar Election may have turned me into a political thriller junkie. (That is, as long as the books are written by Brandt Legg.)

Against a backdrop of a heart pounding plot that just doesn’t stop, the characters in CapWar Election jump off the pages as memorable and beautifully fleshed out, and the writing is superb: a fast and error-free read.

I especially loved Mr. Legg’s main character, Hudson Pound, a hardworking, decent hardware store owner. He’s a good family man, he served and loves our country, and he’s the kind of guy you’d enjoy chatting with at your local hardware store. Yet, in spite of the good life he now lives, Hudson is haunted by a decades-old secret from his past.

When this everyman, this non-political, decent Joe is tapped for the presidential election by one of the richest men in the world, nobody can believe it, especially Hudson. His loving wife and children support the move though, because they believe in him and know he could change the world for the better.

Through corruption, lies, murder, sabotage, and more, Hudson races to the finish line with outstanding courage, while the reader flips pages as fast as he can.

Seriously, folks, this thriller needs to be made into a blockbuster movie. It is that good! Thank you, Mr. Legg, for this supremely satisfying read.

“Capwar Election” the first in Brandt Legg’s intriguing political thrill-ride “CapStone Conspiracy” series opens as billionaire Arlin Vonner entices solid citizen, devoted father and husband Hudson Pound into running as a Republican candidate in a bid for the Presidency. Pound seems like a man the people can identify with and a winning bet for those with money and power but the question for them is can he be controlled?

As the election gears up and Pound becomes a leading favorite, he also becomes a target not only of a reporter out to besmirch his good name but a domestic terrorist group who wants him dead. With conspiracy, hidden secrets, assassinations and homeland terrorism never far from his presence in the political arena Pound must decide if winning the election is worth the price he might ultimately pay.

Fast-paced and intriguing intensity and suspense begin building with the death of a Republican nominee in a car explosion; Pound's life threatened by the terrorist group NorthBridge; and his house burned to the ground. Well-developed with a scenario that too eerily resembles the outcome of the most recent American elections the story takes on a dark and sinister aspect. Interwoven into the mystery of who really runs the government, the powerlessness of the people and the emergence of a more visible homeland terrorism group is the sensationalistic, often inaccurate aspect of journalists’ reporting.

Breathing life into the plot are compelling, multifaceted characters like good-looking 46 year-old Hudson Pound who’s honest, smart, down-to-earth and charismatic; his son the idealistic, appealing and determined Schueller Pound; the enigmatic, arrogant, high-powered billionaire Arlin Vonner; and the cocky, critical journalist Fonda Raton. It’s personalities like these and others that heighten the tension and excitement of a story that flows smoothly to a climax that begs for a second book.

I thoroughly enjoyed “ Capwar Election” and can’t wait to wade further into the CapStone Conspiracy in the next book.

This is another novel that I received from the author in return for an honest review. I selected this novel from another one of those promotions that pretty much every author seems to send out to promo the works of related authors.

This story details the unexpected run for presidential power by the owner of a group of hardware stores backed by a mysterious multi-billionaire (Vonner). As the book progresses, the reader discovers that the backer is part of a group of power brokers (much like the Illuminati) known as Capstone.

This was not a book that I likely would not have found without the assistance of the promotional because I had never heard of the author. That being said, I have really enjoyed the book and am likely to try to continue with the series.

All things considered, I really enjoyed this author's work and as such, I would definitely recommend this book to any political conspiracy afficiandos and would give this novel a solid four stars out of five.

As with all reviews, this is just my five cents worth.

I just finished CapWar Election by Brandt Legg, a Kindle Unlimited free book. Wow! It is the first book of the CapWar trilogy. I thought I was losing interest in reading for the first time in my life. Nope. I just needed to find a book that grabbed me and wouldn't let me go until I finished it. This was that book.
The people of the United States elect their President every four years from a slate of candidates that they choose. Or do they? Every country controls its own economy, society, and people. Or do they? Or is everyone in the world a pawn in the Cap Wars that have been going on for generations among the wealthiest and most elite of the elite? Can one basically good common man, Hudson Pound, be elected President with the help of one of the elite who insists he's a good guy and wants to return autonomy to the people? Does he really want to, or is Hudson Pound just another pawn in the fight for ultimate power over the world? I already downloaded Books 2 and 3 to find out.

Thank you for the opportunity to read your book

The Presidential Elections in the USA. Hudson Pound, the nominee selected by Vonner a multi millionaire, learns of the manipulations and terror acts carried out by several powerful groups who want complete control of the world and with their influence and money are bent on succeeding. Shades of the power struggles happening behind the scenes in today's world perhaps?

This fast paced thriller touches on so much that is the reality of the struggle in society in current times for so many people. The control, lies, manipulations, and murders of those who seek the truth is all within the pages of this story.

Will Hudson Pound and his family survive the attacks both physical and through the media to win?

Brilliant!! A highly recommended read if you enjoy this genre

This is a suspense filled action thriller that will really get you thinking about what's real and what's not. Are conspiracy theorists really crazy or are they on to something or is the answer somewhere in the middle? When a regular guy is chosen by a billionaire to go from owning/running hardware stores to being President you have to wonder! Yet he's a really likable guy. He's smart, engaging, can see that changes need to be made and wants to be the one to bring them about. As a reader it's hard not to root for him he's that genuine! Along the way he learns that all is not what it seems - not really a shocker unless you're not as cynical as I am - although the depth and breadth of the puppet masters is eye opening. Although this is fictional it doesn't feel like it. I would LOVE to see this made into a movie!!!

What an outstanding effort to bring out our thoughts and feelings on politics, division, change, and how blame lies on everyone.

This is again as all of the authors books seem to be an exciting and fast paced story that has many twists and turns. I feel like it can interest, challenge, and make you think and examine your beliefs and ideas about Washington regardless of you affiliation to party (Democratic/Republican) or ideology (Conservative/Liberal).

This book as the first in the series is the story of how Hudson Pound gets selected as a presidential candidate, follows the campaign , and ends with the election. Characters are built and grow throughout and the story is outstanding!

I have already started book 2 and can't put it down or stop wondering where book 3 will go.

Rigged elections

This is quite a novel of people in high places, financially well off, orchestrating elections to take control of money, media, politics, even Presidential elections for their cause. Hudson Pound is an interesting man with a nonpolitical background who is selected to run for President. One should read this novel to understand the manipulation that could go on in selecting government officials. Thank you Mr. Brandt Legg for writing this novel and look forward to continuing the series.

A terrifying story, especially if what is suggested is the truth: That every major election in the United States is rigged in some way by a tiny percentage of the population...using whatever powerful influences they have at their disposal. This book focuses on the plight of a hand-picked regular guy who is tabbed by one of these powerful men to run for president. Despite the regular guy's well-founded doubts, he is assured he will win and become the next president of the United States. His "handler" uses every trick in his vast repertoire to ensure his success. This is book 1 in a series.

Are our elections like they are described in this book?

I don't know. But if they get as bad as they are described in this book, we're all in trouble. Overall it was a good read. The only thing that I found strange was that one of the ultra rich guys in this book was named Booker Lipton. He only had a minor part in this book. But he was in a few of this author's other books and played a major role.

I was looking forward to reading this book, but I just couldn't get into it... Read 36 pages in all and was happy to just let it go and not try to get through it because I felt that I needed to; I don't waste time any longer on a book when I have so many others that I want to read. It is odd because I have enjoyed political mysteries in the past and have a couple on my want to read list.

Political thriller

I like to read when I try to fall asleep. This one worked for me. Usually I crash out after a couple pages so this one did the trick. The premise of an unknown running for president being bankrolled by a billionaire works okay. The action goes along at a good pace. Not too bad of a read.

This author can take the present and explain it (or its possibilities) in a book that the reader does not want to put down. Everything that I’ve read by him is a mind challenge in an easy to read story. This one takes the reader behind the scenes in the American presidential election wrapped up in the control of the rich.
