The vastly differing world views of the male and female lead –

The purpose of food:

Female lead: To fill my tummy!

Male lead: Art!

The impression they have of each other:

Female lead: Impossible!

Male lead: Too stupid!

Is there a possibility that you would date the other party?

Female lead: Who, who wants to get together with this peculiar weirdo!

Male lead: She’s so stupid, I’m the only person capable of accepting her.

This is a story about how an arrogant and cold male idol successfully PKs the female lead’s black-bellied childhood playmate before bringing the female lead along in his domination over the world of gourmet food. The male lead is an extremely talented chef; however, he suffers from blindness – thus, his other senses are all hypersensitive with the exception of his sight. With his perfect sense of taste and his ability to accurately determine people’s attitude and feelings through their vocal tone and their breathing, he is better able to discern the truth and people’s real underlying intentions when compared to the common man.

Personally, the saving grace of this novel is the tension it creates from the competitions. It's thick enough to cut cake, and definitely kept me on my toes. Those scenes were the ones I looked most forward to. The details of the dishes and the progress of the MC, Lin Ke Song, is also noteworthy. We start with her only being able to cook instant noodles, to becoming a great chef! It made me feel sentimental when it ended.

Romance-wise, I feel like this novel did not deliver. I did not find any of the fluff I was expecting. The ML, Jiang Qian Fan, showed affections the most only when Lin Ke Song's down: the lack of confidence scene and the heartbreak scene. I find it unacceptable, because the timing is so weird, almost like he's taking advantage of her whenever she is at her weakest. Imagine having a crush of 10 years on the 2nd male lead only to be told by the male lead that 'months being with me is worth more than that 10-year longing you have.' Then proceeds to Lin Ke Song getting forcefully kissed while crying. Sure, they were very sweet, but the means to get her heart somewhat bugged me.

Also, with the 10-year crush, how could it have not progressed? It's very hard to believe that they are both that dense, Lin Ke Song and Song Yi Ran. Her cousin also has unwarranted animosity towards her. It's laughable, since it's like one of those mindless characters just there for hostility. I wish the other characters could have been developed more, especially the contestants Li Ke Song participated with. I mean, I still don't know why that one contestant continuously helped our MC.

And lastly, I do wish I've gotten to see a future version of Lin Ke Song. Did she become a really awesome chef that could stand on par or above the others? Where will she work? I will definitely read the sequel if ever, although the sequel itself is unlikely to happen. It makes me sad now that I've reached the end of their story.

Originally I gave it five stars because I enjoyed the romance, but then I downgraded it to 4 stars because none of the food descriptions enticed me at all, but then I bumped it back up to five again, because I’d read it again for the romance.

So, actual rating 4.5 stars

The best part was the closeness between the lead couple without a viable male or female antagonist that can put tension on their relationship even though two people half heartedly tried. The cute adorable and syrupy romance was missing when there was plenty of opportunities to work true romance into the plot instead of forced kisses that feel like harassment rather than romance building. They got together rather abruptly which felt awkward.

The focus was cooking competitions and that kept me reading almost to the end. The last 20 episodes were anticlimactic since the major cooking competition ended. So, the ending was boring. Throwing in more competitions and new competitors detracted from the story. Would be better to see a time jump with new restaurants, new family and their genius babies with genius tastebuds creating world class recipes.

I am very happy miracles of recovered sight caused by a new tragedy didn’t appear.

Fluff at its absolute finest, with a hint of sadness and bitterness at points to make the sweetness complete. I'm so full of warm and fluffy feelings and my vision is all pink sparkles, having just finished the book. I want more more more more but that's not to be. T.T

Don't let the description fool you. The male lead is very much a cool-headed character. He'd probably use an exclamation mark like 5 times in his life. lol
