Sweet Water High #3

Kissing the Boy Next Door

Rate this book
Talking to him is forbidden, so why can’t I stay away?

It’s been five years since Wes and I have spoken. Five years since he decided our friendship was less important than our parents’ fight. So when we’re forced to practice a duet together, I expect him to keep our contact to a minimum.

Instead, he’s telling me the feud between our parents has gone on long enough. That he misses me and wants to fix things between us.

But I’m not going to fall for it. I won’t fall for his charms like so many other girls have in the past.

If only my stupid heart would listen to my brain. Because kissing the boy next door is no way to fix a family feud.

Or is it?

1 town. 1 high school. 12 sweet romances.

Cute little pallet cleanser.
*ೃ༄ Wes and Lauren were once best friends but since their parents business deal gone wrong they're forbidden to go near each other. But after Lauren is forced to join the track team, she finds herself getting closer toward Wes and meeting in secret but secrets are unveiled as they try to find out the history of their families feud.

*ೃ༄ Honestly did not give a fuck about the main couple, but I absolutely loved the storyline with the parents. It wasn't crazyy but definitely interesting and very realistic. It was pretty well written for a book of this stature. It intrigued me.

*ೃ༄ I actually do think that this couple will stay together and get married.

✦ Honestly pretty interesting. No complaints.

Well, since I didn't really read what this one was about, I was caught by surprise--a pleasant surprise. I was expecting a friends-to-lovers story, but it's actually like a modern Romeo and Juliet, with these neighbors as enemies.

Former best friends, Wes and Lauren, are victims of their parents long-time feud, but when they are forced together, both in running and choir, they realize there might be more to their relationship. There are some undeniable sparks of attraction that intensify as these two try and solve the mystery of the feud, and some pretty hefty secrets emerge as they chip away at it.

I really enjoyed these characters, especially the easy-going and good-guy, Wes. He's a charmer and really helps Lauren loosen up, yet he's there for her through some hard times. As great as these teens are, their parents have some work to do, hah! I can understand their decisions, yet those choices caused a lot of years of heartbreak and missed relationships. But alas, who's perfect?

This is a great series and I love how each installment builds another piece of Sweet Water High.

Content: mild+ romance (kissing, vague talk of intimacy)

More Than Just Fluff

This book was surprising! I went into it thinking it would be a cute YA book and it was but it was so much more than that. There was depth and struggle that felt substantial. The growing attraction was great and I felt things right along with Lauren. So good!

If you can't tell I love romance. Anything to do with love, and so of course I loved this book!
And Judy Corrys' writing never fails to disappoint.

I loved this trope and want to see a lot more of it! And it was high school romance so it was so cute, and I was here for it. And Wes oh Wes, you have been added to my book boyfriends because I love you. And you know what I'm MAD about is the boys at my school look like a trash bag and all the boys in these books are like a freaking dream. I am not happy that they don't exist!

Family Secrets

This was a little bit like a modern-day Romeo and Juliet story: Wes and Lauren used to be best friends but then something happened between their families and now they aren’t speaking. They aren’t even allowed to go to the beach at the same time... one family even claims to have a restraining order against the other! The teenagers have no idea what even started the fight between the two families but when Lauren joins the cross-country running team at school for necessary gym credits, and both Wes and Lauren sign up to audition for the school choir, the teens have no other choice but to spend time together.
-‘The Carmichaels and the Schultz family did not do things together. Not anymore...’-
-"I am well aware of the feud between your families. I'm also aware that feuds are oftentimes a waste of energy. How about we teach the older generation a thing or two and let the younger generation show how mature they can be?"-
Will the bitterness and the feuding continue, or will old wounds be healed and friendships (or more) be repaired? What is the big secret keeping the families apart?

Once I started reading, I was hooked! Great story, very well written. Engaging storyline. Loved it!

I'm a big fan of Judy Corry's writing—whenever she has a new release, I pick it up as soon as I can. While I didn't love this as much as some of her other books, Kissing the Boy Next Door is an enjoyable read that took some turns that I absolutely did not expect. I liked Wes and Lauren as a couple, and I loved the way everything turned out with Lauren's family.

This was your typical contemporary teen romance book. Very sweet and lighthearted. There were a lot of cringey and embarrasing moments though. If you are looking for a YA book where the main characters have a Romeo and Juliet style family feud going on between them, this is the book for you.

Things I liked:
- Love the ending!
- The romance is so sweet! I love the romance plot in this book.
- So dramatic! So many plot twists!
- I was invested in this story and was engaged the entire time.

Because kissing the boy next door is no way to fix a family feud. Or is it?

Despite living next door to each other, Wes and Lauren never spoke. Their families even went so far as to make sure they weren't on the beach at the same time.

When Lauren showed up at cross country practice, Wes, as the captain of the team, was designated to show her the ropes, breaking their five-year silence.

Wes was super sweet. It was so obvious he was glad to spend time with his one-time best friend. I loved the way he had noticed so much about her during the years they were prevented from seeing each other.

When the two decide they are going to solve the mystery of the origin of the ir families' feud, they had no idea the things they would learn or the grief it would cause. Once the dust settled, Lauren's dad's confession was extremely touching and unexpected. I love her dad!!

I do confess that I struggled with writing this review. I am (still) torn in my opinions of the story. As an adult reading it, I loved it. Yes, the kisses were a little more passionate than I am used to reading, yet they were still clean.. It's just one of them may have gone on for two pages.

The difficulty I have with this is that the story is written for young adults. High-schoolers. The whole premise of the story is Lauren and Wes sneaking around together when their parents have forbidden it. And Lauren reads her mother's private journal, which is how they learned what had happened. They spoke of the parties she sometimes attended with her friend at which there was underage drinking. Yes, she said it wasn't ""her thing"", but there was nothing indicating that there was anything wrong with that.

If the story was for adults, I would have given it a full five stars. I loved and enjoyed it. But I would hesitate to let my nieces read it without having discussions about the subject matter to make sure they realize that though these things make for a sweet and swoony story, Lauren and Wes' behavior was simply unacceptable.

So, if you are reading this review to decide if it is right for your daughters, I'll leave that judgement to you. If you are considering reading this for yourself as an adult - I encourage you to read it. And if you are a young adult, do keep in mind that while you are under your parents' roof, you need to respect them, even if you don't agree with their choices.

It was good

https://ladiikeiii.wordpress.com/2019...

••***Spoilers throughout this review**••

I thought this book was way better than the others to this series that I read... it kept me interested... I figured that Lauren dad was the real dad, especially when they were trying to figure out what the family feud was all about. The whole time it wasn’t even Wes parents nor was it her dad (the man that raised her) fought... more so it was her mom, keeping those secrets from both her husband and daughter even though her husband knew already. But it would’ve been better if her mom was women enough to tell Lauren about her birth father. Nobody told her mom to spread her legs and rebound with TJ aka Travis aka Lauren and Wes cross country coach! Then end up pregnant and keeping it a secret... if only she would’ve been truthful I think that family feud wouldn’t have happened because her mom felt some way when Wes mom asked her questions about TJ... But in the end, I'm glad that everyone finally got along and forgiven each other...

An enjoyable well written good clean fun romance. The characters are great, interesting, relateable, and well developed.  This amazing storyline has forbidden love, mystery, family secrets, and intrigue while trying to solve the mystery of what drove the wedge between their two families. Lauren and Wes were best friends and neighbors until their parents feud ripped them apart. They get a second chance when they are on the same cross country team.
This story is full of surprises that you won't see coming.

I loved this book! Once I starting reading I couldn’t put it down. There is a modern Romeo and Juliet theme with best friends to lovers also going on. It has some mystery as Lauren tries to discover what caused the feud between the families. The romance between Wes and Lauren has sizzle but is also so sweet. I loved it!

This one was adorable and had some good swoony moments...I love a good enemies-to-lovers/forbidden romance. :) Wes and Lauren had a cute love story. Although I had to remind myself that she was 17 because sometimes things were SO obvious but her inner thoughts made her seem oblivious. So I guess her POV wasn’t my favorite. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But I still really liked this one!

Super fun and interesting

This book centers on 2 characters with a Romeo and Juliet upbringing and it was such a fun read because there was a touch of mystery in the book too. It was definitely worth the read.

Adorable, G-rated, YA romance with a touch of Romeo and Juliet

Lauren and Wes are both seniors in high school. Their families have been next door neighbors their whole lives. Both families are equally prosperous millionaires, rich enough to have their own sprawling mansions on a lovely private beach in North Carolina, and each family owning their own plane. Their mothers were best friends throughout high school up until 5 years ago when Wes and Lauren were 12 years old. Unfortunately, at that time their mothers suddenly became enemies, and Wes and Lauren were forbidden to play with each other anymore. Lauren has never fully understood why two such good friends would abandon each other, and over the years she has frequently missed the fun and affectionate friendship she used to have with Wes.

Then comes the day that a seemingly entirely unrelated event begins to turn the family feud around. Lauren discovers that she doesn’t have all the PE credits she needs in order to graduate from high school, and her least objectionable option is to sign up for the cross-country team, in spite of the fact that she's not a very good runner and actually dreads having to run. To her dismay, she discovers that Wes is on the team. She doesn't tell her parents he is on the team, for fear they will pull her off of it. Instead, she does her best to avoid him, but it proves to be impossible. He’s the most talented runner on the team, and Coach assigns him to give her pointers. Suddenly, after 5 years of estrangement, they are starting to talk to each other, and not only while at practices for the cross-country team. They also bump into each other on the beach behind their homes and at the school choir, where they are assigned to perform a duet together at a major school function. In the process of these frequent encounters, Lauren and Wes are both finding it impossible to continue shouldering the burden of their parents' fight, because each admits that they would really like to re-establish their former friendship.

I really enjoyed this cute YA romance. Both Lauren and Wes are very sympathetic characters, and I was rooting for them to get together. Though this novel is told solely from the first-person point of view of Lauren, through her eyes we get to know Wes very well as a kind and decent guy.

This romance novel involves three very popular tropes of the romance genre: reunited friends, a non-tragic homage to Romeo and Juliet, and a G-rated version of “friends become lovers.” There is a strong, secondary plot of family drama connected to the romantic conflict of the family feud. There is a satisfying HEA for both the romance and the family drama, with all loose ends believably and fully tied up.

All in all, this is a quick, enjoyable read which is suitable for all ages.

I rate this book as follows:
Heroine: 4 stars
Hero: 4 stars
Subcharacters: 4 stars
Romance Plot: 4 stars
Family Drama Plot: 4 stars
Writing: 4 stars
Overall: 4 stars

Lauren and Wes had been best friends for years until five years ago when their parents decided there was a feud and they could no longer spend any time together. Even though they were next door neighbors, they weren't allowed to be seen together. Lauren was hurt that Wes had valued their friendship so little that he could no longer be her friend.

During Lareun's senior year, she discovered she was short a PE unit and had to take up a sport in order to meet the requirement to graduate. So, cross-country it was, even though she was so not a runner. Wes just happened to be the best runner on the men's team. They also had choir class together and were asked to sing a duet at the concert. The more time they spent together, the more Lauren began to see that Wes was still a wonderful person and she began to have feelings for him and he seemed he might have feelings for her, too.

In order to practice, they had to sneak around behind their parents back and during this time, they decided that they wanted to put an end to the feud. As they discovered secrets that might have led to the feud in the first place, they realized the secrets could destroy Lauren's family. Was it worth the risk to find the truth? When the dust settled would it be possible to put the pieces back together?

This was a sweet, clean YA romance and the third in the Sweet Water High series of books. I appreciate it when an author takes the time to right a book concentrating on the story and not littering the book with foul language or sex scenes. I enjoy a story that is swoon-worthy but clean and this author accomplished just that.

I was given an arc copy to read and I willingly offer my honest review.

This was a great story. I enjoyed seeing how Lauren deals with the conundrum she is stuck in; cross-country running to get her PE credit. Lauren and Wes have been next door neighbors for years. I liked how the couple were best friends when they were growing up, but then separated suddenly due to a feud between their families. Lauren and Wes are thrown together for a duet in choir and in the cross country team. I enjoyed watching their friendship re-ignite as they work together secretly on their duet. Lauren finds her mother's journal and her eyes are opened to several skeletons that are in her mother's closet. Wes is there to help her navigate the information that Lauren finds. I loved the plot twist, it certainly added a depth to the story. I recommend to anyone that loves teen romance and finding one's identity.

4.9 stars!

i really enjoyed this book, it had the highschool element without it feeling immature and it flowed really well (i personally liked this writing more that the last one in the companion series— but it was also longer so it got to know them better)
i feel like normally books like this the one who we are inside the head of is annoying and you’re just like yelling at the page to have her actually try to clear some stuff up, but in this book it Lauren was not like that, even though there was definitely miscommunication (mainly in the amazing subplots) and that the book actually had build up!

also just saying that i love wes so much, he’s literally so sweet and genuine and caring!

well i’m going to bed bc it’s currently 6:11 am bc i read it in one sitting without looking at the clock

i will definitely be continuing the companion series and also looking into more books by this author!
btw— the companion is written by other authors!!

Judy Corry’s, Kissing The Boy Next Door, the 3rd YA novel in the Sweet Water High Series is a tender read with plenty of romance and enough twists to keep the reader turning the pages.

Lauren Carmichael and Wes Schultz were inseparable in grade school, but a family feud between their parents separated the two friends for years. Now that Lauren has joined the track team, Wes and Lauren are thrown together over and over and before long sparks begin to fly. As time goes on both Lauren and Wes are determined to solve the mystery of their parents' feud and loss of friendship, but what they find will forever change the course of all their lives.

A sweet read with plenty of family drama and romance, Kissing The Boy Next Door will be sure to please any reader at any age. A great continuation of the Sweet Water High Series.

Lauren&Wes❤️ OK, so this one was bound to happen from book 1 - Charlotte spotted how Wes was looking at his neighbor Lauren inspite of their families' feud and I was waiting for this story to unfold. I loved them! They have been friends as children but then there was a falling out between their families and they lost their friendship. Now they pretend to be enemies, but both of them really miss each other and how things were. So when circumstances throw them together in more than one way, Lauren and Wes decide to try to amend things and get to the bottom of this feud. Oh, did I mention that apparently now that they are both seniors, there are more feelings involved than just friendship. Really it was so, so cute to watch them together (sigh...). Lauren and Wes are my favorite couple so far from the Sweet Water High series.
Narrative: 1st person following Lauren
Religion: none
Sensuality: chaste, only kisses

Teen drama with messy real life situations

I have read several of Jody’s books and so have wanted to read this one for a while so I grabbed it up when she put it on sale. I decided to start it late in the evening early morning and was intrigued enough I stayed up the rest of the night. I slept a few hours and then spent half the day reading to finish it up. Lauren we are introduced to slightly from another series or at least her hit twin cousins that lived in sweet water for a short time. But in this story we get to see two best friends reconnect after their parents have been fighting for 5 years. Wes and Lauren uncover their mystery of the “feud” to allow themselves to hang out again but what they didn’t anticipate was uncovering some big secrets and a romance and deep feelings for each other. This was a clean sweet romance with some intense kissing.

Another great book (standalone but also part of a collab series with other authors) by Judy Corry. I liked the characters and story progression.

This may be a petty thing, but I was disappointed that this was another book by Judy Corry that had the Phantom of the Opera as sort of a key piece of the story (The Ruse was more centered on it, but still. I wish a different musical was referenced here). Also, the duet was a fairly big piece of the book but it was fade to black and we only heard how it went after it was over. I wish there would have been details about their chemistry and desire during the performance.

Content: fade to black kisses, references to a couple sleeping together, a line about muscles in her lower abdomen swooning, reference to underage drinking, lies and secrets between parents, kids, and spouses.
