MechWarrior brothers Morgan and Patrick Kell have successfully faced their first challenge in forming their new mercenary unit The Kell Hounds, toppling a criminal kingpin from atop his illegal empire on Galatea.
But while enjoying their recent success, the brothers Kell, along with the capital city of Galaport, come under threat by a new enemy—Bishop Arlington Poore, a religious zealot who wants to bring the entire planet under his repressive theocracy—and is willing to starve millions to do it.
Soon enough, the newly-formed Kell Hounds have their first job—put down this uprising as quickly as possible. But when a madman has converted thousands of civilians to his side, how will Morgan and Patrick quash his misguided crusade without shedding innocent blood?
As far as a first jaunt for the still-forming Kell Hounds, a strange hostage situation involving religious zealots is hardly what I was expecting. But here we are and have Morgan Kell and his new mercenary group facing off against whare are essentially Christian fundamentalists.
But I suppose it was a good enough challenge since it's not like they're at their target strength just yet. And how things border on being a bit of a potential civil war as they're all on the same planet, and that's always something to mine for drama and character conflict.
Mech combat was still relatively light as it's not like the "enemy" of this book was a big army with lots of mechs. There were some atrocities and some disturbing moments but on the whole it was a good first effort that demonstrated how the Kell Hounds could make good use of mixed forces including infantry and those silly arena-level ultralyte mechs.
This book expands the story and history of battletech . The Kell Hounds are important to the plot off many future events.. And it is a very good read fast paced. With a villian to dislike and combat to enjoy. And in Stackpole tradition a mech loses containment.
The whole Kell Hounds Trilogy has been kind of a behind-the-scenes look into the lore of the Battletech universe, before even most of the Legends books were set. It was fun to read about Patrick and Morgan Kell and their contemporaries, Katrina Steiner, Ian Davion, and others. Great books, highly recommended.
The brothers Kell are still on Galatea recruiting when the Kell Hounds end up on their first sortie. A religious crackpot has essentially seceded from the planetary government and they control all the food production on planet. So Morgan, Patrick and the fledgling Kell Hounds have their first mission
Another enjoyable short novel filling in more of the early days of Battletech fixtures in the form of the beginnings of the Kell Hounds. A good read that I’d well worth your time.
