Hitches, Hideouts, & Homicides by Tonya Kappes
Campers & Criminals book 7. Cozy mystery southern style. Best read as part of the series in order.
Another body is found by Mae West in Normal, KY. Mae and her Laundry Club ladies investigate the murder though law officer Hank prefers more caution. Plenty of twists and unlikely unraveling, the story is amusing and filled with southern charm.

🎧 this series so far is narrated by Joanne Parker who does a wonderful job with the various characters from their emotions to cadence. I prefer this method of reading for this author for the editing issues I find in the written versions, though a couple were noticed here as well. I listened to this at a slightly higher speed for me of 1.6 because of the southern drawl.

Visiting Normal, Kentucky is always a wonderful experience! Tonya Kappes writes the heck out of this town and I love everything; the characters, the setting, the mystery, and even the romance that is beginning to form nicely between Hank and Mae. If there were ever a fictional town I would be able to visit this would be it- hands down! The people of Normal are just so sweet, tight-knit, and friendly. Not only that, the small town feels just speak to me. If it weren't for Tonya's ability to write the way she does I wouldn't feel this way. So thank you!

Hitches, Hideouts, & Homicides is the 7th book in the Camper & Criminals series. Each book does feature a new mystery but I personally recommend reading these books in order as the characters grow in each book (especially in the romance department). In this one, Mae stumbles on yet another dead body while hanging out with the gang at a local hoedown. Unfortunately, that's not where it ends though. Mae simply can't help but stick her nose in the investigation and with a little help from the ladies at the Laundry Club she may just find out who the killer is.

Readers, this is one of my FAVORITE cozy series and I highly recommend it to all that read the genre! Tonya brings the town of Normal, Kentucky to life! You can practically feel the sunshine on your back and hear the laughter from the people! It's that good! Then, when a little mystery is thrown in you become consumed with finding the killer just as Mae does. It's just perfect! So make sure to grab your copy of this one releases on May 28th!

Hitches, Hideouts & Homicides by Tonya Kappes is a good addition to this series. I can always count on Ms. Kappes to provide me with a good mystery filled with twists and these sweet and quirky characters that I would love to spend time with in Normal, KY. There is some major friction in this one between Mae and Hank because of her snooping around the latest murder. I do understand his concern but he should know by now how Mae is which she needs to find answers to her questions. I know Mae can't help herself but I do wish she would listen to Hank just a little more. Also Abby is acting more than quirky in this one which has Mae confused.

A quickly paced plot with several suspects, a cold case that involves plenty of rumors but no concrete facts and enough red herrings to keep me turning the pages until the reveal. I truly enjoy each book in this series.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. All of the above opinions are my own.

Picking up shortly after previous book, our story beginnings with the opening of a new motel in the old train station. When Mae discovers a dead body the night the big Hoe Down Celebration, she’s determined more than ever to get to the bottom of the murder mystery, despite what Normal Detective, aka boyfriend, Hank Sharp has to say about it.

Hitches, Hideouts, & Homicide is the seventh tale in the Camper and Criminals Cozy Mystery series. After taking a two month break from the series (due to a few frustrations with the series), I was looking forward to getting back to Normal. However, that joy was short-lived as the things that irritated me about the series seemed to grow over the course of listening to this short tale.

The mystery itself was interesting, however Mae’s overzealous determination to uncover the truth at all costs ruined it for me. She was so busy coming up with theories via gossip and tossing around accusations, that I never felt she had a firm grasp on who really did it until she stumbles on to the answer.

Additionally, the characters I once loved are all becoming a bit overly dramatic. Dottie suddenly has secrets and is a standoffish with Mae. Abby is a psycho stalker over Ty. Mae is even more obnoxious, especially to Hank. They all rubbed me the wrong way, which was extremely disappointing. I also felt the ending was abrupt, leaving some of the smaller, personal threads unfinished.

Narration: I’ve come to love Ms. Parker’s southern drawl and how it adds ambiance to these stories. The series is shared from Mae’s first person narrative, and Ms. Parker’s voice fits Mae’s personality: friendly, courageous, and determined. Overall, Ms. Parker fits the southern, small-town feel and pacing of the narrative. Each character has a slightly different voice fitting his/her age and gender, with her male and older women characters having deeper voices. Her narration is the highlight of the stories.

I have to wonder why anyone would visit Normal when there has been at least a dozen murders in a couple years. I like Mae and the residents; however, I’ve become frustrated with inconsistencies in the world-building and the overly dramatic and stupid behavior from one or more characters. Unfortunately, I think it’s time to say farewell to Mae, Hank, the Happy Trails Campground, and Normal, KY.

My Ratings:
Story: C-
Narration: A

I was delighted to take another trip to Normal, Kentucky and meet up with my old friend Mae West and her cohorts. I’m listening to this series on audio and it makes me feel like I’m right in the center of Mae’s Happy Trails campgrounds.

Of course Mae is always stumbling across dead bodies and sticking her nose right into the investigation. This story is no different.

Once again, the author gives us a fast-paces murder mystery to figure out. It’s intriguing and features a town of quirky characters. One of the most enjoyable things for me is seeing how the characters continue to grow.

This is the 7th book in the series and I’ll be listening to more in the very near future.

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Anytime I get to spend time with Mae and her friends is time well spent. Mae does not back down from anything and her friends always have her back. Hank, her boyfriend and detective of Normal, Kentucky, does not know what to do with her. He is afraid for her safety and he really cares about her a lot. Some days he is ready to pull his hair out.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and creating Southern towns that seem authentic. These descriptions pulled me into the story right from the beginning and pulled me along for a great read. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The mystery was suspenseful and had enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider. It was not easily solved, which is how I like my mysteries.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I am already looking forward to reading the next one.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

I love visiting Happy Trails campground and Normal, Kentucky. I wish it were a real place because I would be on my way there. Of course I would be wearing a bullet proof vest. No sense in taking crazy chances. Dead bodies just seem to be attracted to Mae West, owner of Happy Trails. Some folks might believe that is a bad thing. I guess, though, if I was a murdered body, I would want her to find me. See, she is the nosy type. She doesn’t let anything get in the way of finding out who did it and why...not even a handsome law enforcement guy who enjoys her company. He really shouldn’t worry too much. The Laundry Club Ladies would never dream of letting her get into trouble by herself. Um, sorry. I mean they wouldn’t dream of letting her solve the crime by herself. I can’t tell you just what happened but rest assured a body is involved. So are a bit of romantic issues. Just what is going on?

If you are looking for some camping excitement pick up a copy of Hitches, Hideouts and Homicide. If you need to be convinced a RV might have your name on it, pick up the entire A Camper & Criminals Series. You will find find yourself looking forward to some small town camping for sure.

The book has some recipes and hints at the end of it. There is no sex or adult language and violence is kept to a minimum. I was provided with an uncorrected, electronic copy of the book for reviewing. It is possible that the corrected version of the book is slightly different. I am definitely planning to buy my own copy.

This is the 7th installment in Camper & Criminals series by Tonya Kappes. I was happy to return to “Normal, Kentucky” and Happy Trails campground. Every time I read one of these books it makes me want to visit Kentucky and the Daniel Boone National Park.

This was another one I couldn't put down until I read the last page. The previous owner of the Old Train Station motel is murdered and there are so many suspects to choose from, most tied to a previous bank robbery, that may or may not have happened. Mae with the help of the Laundry Club ladies are going to figure out who the killer is...

Its full of personality, non-stop action, and plot twists which keeps you interested till the very end.
I thought I had identified the killer early in the book but as I read on there were some red herrings and just when thought I had it all figured out, there were some really big twists.

I cant wait for the eighth installment in this series, I highly recommend this to cozy lovers.

I requested and received an Advance Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.

Normally I enjoy these for the light cozies they are but boy was Mae West an awful person in this book. I feel as if a different author wrote this one because 😒😒👀👀 what. Happened??? Mae was rude, unreasonable, insensitive, irritable, putting her hands on people..and all the thing. Abby was stalking Ty, Dottie was hiding stuff and acting out of character, it’s like this book was a serious anomaly.

The murder of the trainer who was rumored to have also been a bank robber in the past got lost due to the utter chaos of character decimation. Ughhhh

One of the locals has turned the train station into a motel and everyone is looking forward to the Hoe Down being thrown right before its opening. When the Hoe Down finally arrives fun is being had by all until an unexpected lightning storm knocks out all the power leaving everyone in the dark. Mae hopes that she can be of service and volunteers to see if she can fix the problem. When Mae finds another body and realizes that the storm may not have been the cause of the blackout her mind starts to turn. She finds something near the body and thinks it might be a clue to what could have happened but the police are looking at it like a suicide. Mae thinks there was more to the mans death and that suicide had nothing to do with it so she takes her thoughts to her group of friends. They've solved mysteries before why not this time too. Meanwhile several businesses have been broken into and even one of Mae's campers. With two mysteries to solve Mae jumps right into the deep end the only problem, this time she may not be able to get herself out. This is such fun down home series that truly gives you a taste of the south. The Southernisms bring the story to life as well as the characters and pulls you into a lifestyle all its own. I love how well the author brings the south to life, its a character all on its own. I look forward to seeing what Mae and her gang get involved in next!

Mae West owns and runs the Happy
Trails Campground in Normal, Kentucky.
The campground is located within the
Daniel Boone National Park.
The author takes us to a extremely well
described hoedown at the refashion
Old Train Station. This makes you feel
you are right there in the barn.
When the lights suddenly go out, Mae
discovers a body outside the back of the
barn. Who would want this horse trainer
dead?
Two murders, two robberies in town, a gun
stolen from a camper, a young man with a
backpack appearing in places he shouldn’t
be. What is going on in the Normal area?
Mae and her Laundry Club Ladies decide
to investigate.
The characters are very colorful, well defined,
interesting with southern charm adding to
their flavor. There are two fur babies, Fifi
( Mae’s poodle) and Chester( Mae’s boyfriend
dog) plus Rosa, the horse.
The book has murder, robbery, adventure,
twists and turns, captivating writing that turns
into a titillating story. A real page turner with
recipes and camping tips at the end.
This is book # 7 in the Campers & Criminals Cozy
Mystery series. It can be read as a stand alone.
I volunteered to read Hitches, Hideouts, & Homicides.
Thanks to the author for the opportunity. My
opinion is my own.

Mae and Hank are at odds once again when she and the Laundry Club gals are investigating the murder of a local man suspected of being a bank robber. A list of suspects a mile long and motives of all varieties has Mae all over the board and Hank frustrated at all the gossip! A fun bunch of characters that actually has me considering "glamping" as an option for a vacation this year! The plot is entertaining and keeps you turning pages to see what happens next!

Hitches, Hideouts, Homicides was a fun mystery. A country hoedown turned murder scene!

The Gist: A horse trainer's been killed at a hoedown and one of Mae's friends...might just wind up being accused!

I like Mae overall. I get a little frustrated with her sometimes because she does get a bit too nosy when there's really no need and winds up in trouble. But she's caring and always there for her friends and I like how hard she tries at everything.

There's a small bit of romance going through these (very small) and it's okay. I like Hank as well but he can get a bit hard nosed, too, not that I blame him all the time. I do wish there was a bit more romance on page instead of just telling us. Ex-- you never see them say I love you but she's like we said I love you a few times over the months. Okay, well, I'd like to see some of these major romance points, too.

The mystery was well done. Lots of possibilities. I had it figured out but she threw in some good curveballs that had me questioning myself and choice.

Overall, a good read. Editing is still iffy but wasn't the worst of the series in that regard. Nice characters, great setting, fun mystery.

Great if you like figuring out puzzles

Not the mystery in the story, but the mystery of what the author is trying to say amidst the typos and plot errors. This author has decent story ideas, but needs to proofread her work. Every one of her books is filled to the brim with errors.

This was another good read in the series. When someone is murdered you can bet Mae and her band of friends get together. They try and solve the case. Even though her boyfriend wishes she wouldn't. I was yet again surprised by who did it and was glad that it all worked out in the end. I enjoy these characters and look forward to reading more.

"Hitches, Hideouts & Homicides" earns 5/5 Hoedowns...Clever & Engaging!

We're back to normal! Well, not so quick...Normal, Kentucky, may be a delightful small town in Kentucky, but murders are always popping up. Ok, I love it! Mae West, owner of the Happy Trails Campground, has atoned for her husband's crimes, made several friends, and become an important member of the community. But, she also seems to stumble upon one too many dead bodies, and with assistance from good friends and the ladies of the Laundry Club, the mystery is solved and justice served. Along with the amateur investigation punctuated by giggles and a bit of trouble, Mae is navigating a romantic entanglement with Sheriff Hank Sharp, who loves her, cares for her, and is often exasperated by her amateur detecting. In "Hitches, Hideouts & Homicide" Mae is compelled to investigate the murder of Jay Russel uncovering links to a decades old cold case. Kappes unfolds a clever complex mystery using a delightful first-person narrative sharing Mae's inner thoughts and ideas along with vivid descriptions and dialogue that portrays well personality and tone. I love the southernisms on display and bonus...Recipes and Cleaning Hacks from Mae West and the Women of Normal, Kentucky and Happy Trails Campground. Enjoy Campfire Baked Apple Dessert, Campfire Cinnamon Rolls, and Coconut Curry Soup, and make sure to use the RV Essential Checklist.

Something is off about that book, after reading the whole thing I can’t recall anything good or bad, it was so bland and unmemorable.

In this installment, Mae West is solving another case, her boyfriend becomes really annoying and doesn’t add much to the plot development. The murder case is not so interesting to follow, though there were some unexpected things.

The secondary characters are charming and quirky, and I enjoyed them more than the main characters. The setting is still great, a small camp not far from the town, where everyone knows each other, charming and cosy.

The writing style is a bit simple and repetitive at times. Also, some of the character's actions and decisions seemed unrealistic and forced.

Hitches, Hideouts, & Homicides is another exciting installment in Kappes' Camper and Criminals mystery series. Mae once again finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation when she finds a local horse trainer dead under suspicious circumstances. When Mae's good friend Dottie is revealed to have a connection to the deceased, Mae becomes determined to find the real killer and prove her friend innocent. Naturally things don't go as planned, and Mae finds herself facing danger once again.

Kappes does a great job at setting up this new mystery with some great conflict for Mae. I absolutely loved seeing a strong focus on Mae and Dottie's friendship with the progression of this mystery. The book's secondary characters always add so much to the story so I was thrilled that Mae and the reader got to learn more about Dottie. The mystery also resulted in some tension between Mae and Hank with Hank asking Mae not to get involved. Kappes did a great job at setting up great internal conflict for Mae with some of the people closest to her while also creating a great mystery. The book captures the reader's attention from the beginning and never lets go. Overall Hitches, Hideouts, & Homicides proved to be a great read that I would most definitely recommend. I look forward to reading Mae's next adventure.

This was first published on my blog "Lecture toute une Aventure"

My opinion:
Normal is sure a place with a lot of murders and mystery and those attract Mae like nothing else....even when she wants nothing to do with it- for our pleasure-.

When Mae finds a new corpse during the grand opening of the new motel she can't stay away especially when friends ask her help...even if it makes her boyfriend edgy. She is loyal and determined as well as clumsy ...so between murder, possible stolen, hidden money and her job at the camping she is very busy and need her gang from the laudromat to help her clear her mind.
There are a lot of humour with all the girls ( without forgetting the dogs always too cute and funny) and the space of the investigation is just great with several twists . We follow her with a lot of pleasure and we do get our answers as well .

A great cozy mystery for an excellent reading time. even better read in order but perfect as stand alone.

Mae West, the campground owner, not the actress, once again finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation. And once again her boyfriend, and lead detective is ordering her to keep her nose out of it. There is more tension in their relationship because of this. While there isn't a lot of emotion at play in the books, there is a little more in this one as Maw struggles with her feelings toward Hank. As far as the mystery goes, if you've read any of the other books in this series, you know the gist of it. Mae has a knack for getting people to talk, allowing her to gather clues and or motives and suspects. She also gets lucky a lot. Once she gets a gut feeling about something, nothing will stop her from finding out the truth. It's an easy book to read and follow. It reads quickly as well. Same fun characters, though they seemed to be a little less zany in this book. We meet a couple new people too. As a bonus, there are recipes and camping tips at the end of the book. :) There is no sexual content, and only the slightest of violence, and is safe for teens and up.

*I volunteered to review an ARC of this book.

Welcome to Normal, Kentucky - or at least what passes for "normal" in Mae West's campground. She sure experiences a lot of wacky adventures there and I totally enjoy reading about them! When a murder stirs up old secrets, Mae finds herself investigating to the dismay of her boyfriend, Sheriff Hank. There is such a quirky cast of characters in this series and they definitely add color to the books. There were plenty of suspects all with believable motives - how am I supposed to figure it out? That's the fun in a Tonya Kappes book - just when you think you know who or what it is...then you find out it's not at all what you thought - fun!!

Although I did receive an ARC from the author, I am leaving my review voluntarily.

Mae West is once again in the thick of a murder when she comes across the body of a competition riding coach.
This is another fun story from Normal Kentucky, we have a 40-year-old bank robbery, and a murderer who is after the hidden loot. There are well developed characters, a good bit of humor, and several twists to keep you guessing.

This series is so fun!

The mystery in this was fine, I kind of didn’t care that much about it. I just like the small town vibes and the friendships. There all a lot of characters and I low key be forgetting who they are and how they are related, but it didn’t affect my enjoyment. Still don’t love the romance. He actually annoyed me a lot in this one.

There are some hikers roaming around Normal. They have been sites around Mae's campground and around the new motel that is having a grand opening. Hank isn't happy about this and has warned everyone to be on the lookout especially now that a couple of stores have been broken into and things took. On the night of the grand opening of The Old Train Station Motel, a thunderstorm comes through causing the lights to go out. Mae goes out to the barn to see if the breakers are alright, while she is there she stumbles over the body of Jay Russel. He is a horse trainer. It has also been rumored that he and his friend robbed the Normal Bank twenty years earlier, though it was never proved and Jay said he never did it. At first, they thought Jay killed himself because the gun found was registered to him, but later it was ruled a homicide. You will have to read the book to see how Dottie is involved in all of this. Also Rosa, Jay's prize horse is missing! I voluntarily reviewed a free ARC of this book.
