Colemans of Heart Falls #1

The Cowgirl's Forever Love

Rate this book
Return to Heart Falls—a place for family, friends, and falling in love.

The first stand alone novel in a new trilogy by New York Times bestselling author Vivian Arend.

Lisa Coleman committed to stay in Heart Falls until her sister’s baby arrives, but after that, she’s moving on. She’s not sure exactly what is on the agenda, so it’s good to still have a few months to figure out her dreams. While she’s waiting, there’s no reason she can’t enjoy herself with the very sexy local veterinarian. A naughty interlude with a man who knows all the right moves would be the perfect distraction from Coleman chaos: newborn baby! New dog! New found family?!

Josiah Ryder is beginning to feel women only want him for one thing. Playing fast and loose was fun in the past, but it’s time for a change. He’s ready to prove he’s in it for the long haul, but the one woman he truly wants insists she’s in town for six months and not a moment longer. He’ll have to pull out all the stops to make Lisa realize nothing out there can compete with finding forever right under her nose.

Cheating on the Six Pack Ranchers 😉

4.5 stars - I feel like I'm cheating a little as I've been listening to and reading the initial Colemans series, Six Pack Ranch, and here I am, skipping ahead. I won't apologize because this was a copy I received from the author instead of my bookcase or the library. No, that doesn't make it better, but it does make it my goes anywhere copy.

Did jumping ahead cause any grief? Nope, not even a little. There are references to the main characters in prior books here and there, plus, we get the wind down of Caleb and Tamara's story (which I'm assuming preceded this but I haven't confirmed). Considering that, there were no concerns at all.

Now that I've shared more info than is possibly necessary, let's talk about Lisa and Josiah.

There are so many things I love about this story:
- They are quirky and have big huge hearts.
- The story touches on being self-conscience about one's body... from a male's perspective.
- Ollie! The terrier that burrows her way into their lives and hearts.
- Each is supportive of the other before and after they solidify their relationship.
- The cards Josiah, and later Lisa, carry and 'act' out throughout the book.
- Their chemistry (it's HOT!)

There's so much more, but I'd give too much away. The Coleman family welcomes new family members into the fold with open arms, and it is touching. I look forward to continuing my love affair with the Colemans!

This was the audio version. As such, here's my quick two cents on the narrator, Tatiana Sokolov. I like her voice and inflection throughout. It would've been ideal to have a male for Josiah and the other men in the story, but she made it work.

Story: 4.5 stars
Narration: 4 stars

UPDATED 9/2024: It's All in the (Cue) Cards
Lisa Coleman and Josiah Ryder are cute and so easy to love! I loved revisiting them, and it was all the sweeter because I've read the rest of the books that came before it - Rocky Mountain House (Six Pack Ranch and Thompson & Sons combined) and The Stones of Heart Falls series.

Lisa Coleman was smart and sexy, and both descriptors turned him on.
-- Josiah Ryder

One subplot that had a bigger impact now that I've read the Rocky Mountain House series is George Coleman and how he really turned things around. I loved seeing that! Of course, reading my original review shows that prior reading wasn't necessary.

I read along with the audio book. Tatiana Sokolov does a great job even if I'd like a male counterpart on occasion.

***4 ‘I Bet’ Stars***

Diving into one of Vivian Arend’s books always feels like coming home and The Cowgirl’s Forever Love was no different. It was sweet, funny, smexy and filled with a lot of heart, along with that small town vibe where everyone is all up in everyone else’s business and giving a not so unobtrusive nudge here and there when they feel it’s necessary.

I loved Lisa and Josiah. Both are good, hard working people who tend to put others ahead of themselves, but they thrive on being there for them and helping when and where they can. Lisa has a sneaky streak, but comes by it honestly and good naturedly. And Josiah is simply a good man, who has a few...quirks...insecurities...that I would never have guessed at, but all they did was make me love him harder for it.

As for their journey to their HEA. It was a lot of fun. I loved how upfront and honest they were about what they were feeling and what they wanted, or at least thought they wanted, not only for themselves but each other. Their bantering was fun and the sweet and smexy going on between them was on point. There were many issues to deal with and the angst was low, but they did have a few hurdles to get over and I loved how things ended up for them.

This was a fun, quick read and filled with all the goodness I’ve come to expect from the author. There were a couple of twists tossed into the mix that I really enjoyed and am looking forward to seeing how they all play out in the series. I loved catching up with all the people I’ve met so far in Heart’s Fall ~ and there are quite a few, though not as many as in Rocky Mountain House ~ but Sonora is definitely my favorite and with what happened in epilogue I definitely cannot wait to get my hands on the next book!

Lisa Coleman has been in Heart Falls helping out her sister’s family at Tamara deals with a difficult pregnancy. She doesn’t mind at all, helping others is what Lisa lives for but she is looking forward to exploring the world when her sister doesn’t need her anymore. Josiah Ryder gives so much of himself as the area’s veterinarian, and he has realized he is ready to find someone to share his life but the woman who interests him has one foot out the door as soon as her sister is able to take care of her family again. Despite that, Josiah decides to take a chance and maybe convince Lisa she can find everything she needs right in Heart Falls. Ms. Arend gives reads an engaging love story even though this couple is busy and have to steal moments to be together. I actually think that’s what I loved so much about this because they didn’t hop in the sack together right away, there was a bit of a build up, they kept getting interrupted and it forced them to slow down and really learn about one another. Neither had a perfect childhood and both have their own scars from them, but together they work through their pasts and begin to embrace the people they’ve become. I loved the banter between Lisa and Josiah, their interesting dates, and the way they are so much alike even when they don’t realize it. There were a couple of twists and turns in this story, but they just added to the entertainment value and made me curious about what’s to come in future books. The Cowgirl’s Forever Love is classic Vivian Arend and it was an excellent addition to her body of work.

I hate to say it but I found this book a bit wanting. Which is a shame because having read Arend's Six Pack Ranch and Stones of Heart Falls series I was already in love with all of the characters. Oh there were some really good parts. There's a couple of seriously life changing events in store for the Whiskey River portion of the Coleman clan. There's a big event for Tamara and Caleb. There's a cute little pup Ollie, although I don't really get why a female dog would be named Ollie? And it was really nice that at least one character knew from the very start what he wanted from the relationship so they didn't both spend the entire story having casual sex, giving each other orgasms and becoming BFFs while still clueless as to their deeper feelings.
My problems with this story begin with my perception that the two main characters Josiah and Lisa just didn't spend enough time together to truly fall in love and want to spend their lives together. Even when Lisa found herself with less demands on her time Josiah was still rushing around taking care of one veterinary emergency after another. It just seemed like they only got to spend a few stolen minutes or hours with each other every few days. Also, even though I know at the start of any contemporary romance I've ever read, at the end of the story the guy will get the girl or the girl will get the guy. But in the good stories the author forces you to forget that knowledge at least a little bit so you can have just a little doubt as to whether the couple can overcome whatever obstacles are keeping them from their happily ever after and enjoy the suspense. For whatever reason Arend never gave me one moment to doubt that eventually Josiah and Lisa would be together even as Lisa continued to struggle over what she was going to do when she no longer needed to take care of Tamara and her family. Lisa has been a wonderful character. She's witty, snarky, bright and manipulative in the best of ways. In this story we discover she was the behind the scenes force for major changes back home in Rocky Mountain House. What we don't find out is what she's using her talents for now that she's no longer nursemaiding Tamara or helping run the family ranch? Okay, she and Josiah are happily in love forever. But what is Lisa doing to fill her days when she's not busy with Josiah or dreaming of places she wants to see? What's her new career? And lastly (and this is a pet peeve of mine not unique to Ms. Arend) the epilogue had nothing to do with seeing Lisa and Josiah in their new happily ever after. It was totally focused on setting up the next book in the series, Karen and Finn's story. I don't mind a little bit of a tease to get us interested but not the total focus of the entire epilogue. I would have liked to have seen more of Lisa and Josiah's life.

This was a very sweet book, no drama, just a couple with a major attraction to each other and figuring out their relationship and how it fits into what they saw as their life. Lisa, for the most part, is the one that has to figure things out. She had plans, help her sister til the baby came then it was "me" time, which she planned for a lot of travel. Josiah threw a wrench into her plans, but their developing relationship made it worth it to figure out how to have it all. And have it all they did by the end in a way that worked in a huge way for them both!

How I love this series about Heart Falls, they are engaging and somewhat realistic so I feel I know all the people.
This one was sweet, funny, passionate and of course a happy ending.

Characters is well described and developed in to personalities with flaws that we all can have and that’s part of the reason I feel connected to them.

It’s a good storyline that progresses nicely

No unnecessary descriptions of surroundings

Fun and good dialogues that sounds natural when I read.

These books from Heart Falls is one of my favourite series and I’ve read them several times.

If you like a world of ranchers and their stories of finding love I do recommend both this first book in a new series and all the previous books in the other series from Heart Falls by this author.

5 stars

This is a spin off series of a spin off. We continue the story of the Coleman sisters (Whiskey River Coleman's) with Lisa Coleman. Lisa moved to Heart Falls to assist her older sister, Tamara while she is pregnant and has her child. Lisa is at a cross roads in her life. She has been an homebody staying in Rocky Mountain House for her whole life. She wants to get out and experience new things and travel. In the 6 months, that she has been in Heart Falls with her sister and her family, Lisa met the love of her life. Does she pursue their relationship and give up her dreams to travel and have new experiences? Or does she take a chance of love?

Vivian's writes very moving emotional stories with wonder families and friends. You want to move to Rocky Mountain House or Heart Falls, Alberta and be a part of the gang.

It's not that I didn't love this Veterinarian falls for his best friends sister in law, it's just that it felt meh.

Lisa and Josiah shouldn't be good for each other because she wants to spread her wings and fly and he wants to grow roots and settle down. That's total opposites if I ever did see one. However the build up and relationship building was a great part of this book. We get to see them slowly fall for each other and build a relationship with a strong foundation which was adorable to watch.

I found that there wasn't ever really a "conflict" even though her wanting to not settle down was the conflict it wasn't that strong of one. Which made me constantly go well where's the rough patch for them or where's things that need to be worked through. I think because it was a flat read it was hard for me to not love it more.

Lisa Coleman
Josiah Ryder

Lisa is helping her sister Tamara and her family until Tamara has her baby. Josiah is the local Veterinarian and good friend of her brother in law Caleb. What started out as a little fun until the baby was born, began to turn into something more. Lisa is a very caring person, but is trying to decide what she wants to do in the future. She is happy helping people, whether that be family or organizing a fundraiser for an animal shelter, but she wants to travel, learn and have an adventure. Josiah loves animals and has an acting background from his family. This is a very good, fast reading book. I liked both characters and enjoyed the change in their personalities as their relationship progressed. I would definitely read more books by this author and this series. This book can be read as a stand alone.

She is there short term but he is looking for forever

Josiah is looking for someone to settle down with but needs to overcome things and feelings from his past before he can truly do that. Lisa is only in town to help her pregnant sister until the baby comes in is about six months. Then she is going on adventures to figure out what she wants for her life and where she wants to be. Josiah finally after a few months realizes that he wants to see where things can go with him and Lisa. Can he convince her that staying in Heart Falls where there are many people who care about and love her? Who is the woman training to be an EMT that came to help Tamara when she went into labor and looks like the Coleman family enough that at first look Tamara thought she was their sister Karen? Is she related to the Coleman's and how?

The Cowgirl's Forever Love

WOW! What a heartwarming story. This story is about Lisa and the veterinarian, Josiah. Lisa was temporarily loving with her sister Tamara while she was pregnant. She was wanting to make contact with Josiah but he seemed to be shying away being with Lisa. His previous relationships are what was keeping him from Lisa. Not sure when the tide turned but these two finally got together and promptly fell in love. The big surprise came when the Coleman sister's found out they had a half sister (Julia). We didn't quite see a marriage proposal but these two are working on their happily ever after. FANTASTIC job Vivian! I would recommend this book. Can't wait for Karen's story.

Audiobook Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 5
Story – 5

Another great story from Vivian Arend!

I listened to the Heart Falls Christmas books before listening to this so I already knew that some of the secondary characters had their HEAs but that didn’t diminish my enjoyment of this story one bit. Lisa and Josiah were really great together. This story also has some seriously hot scenes between Lisa and Josiah. I like how the end of the book gives a little teaser for the next couple’s story and I’m looking forward to listening to it. Tatiana Sokolov did another great job performing this story.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

great addition to the series

Really enjoyed Josiah & Lisa’s story. It was sweet, funny & they sexy. What starts out with Josiah running every time Lisa comes close turns into Josiah deciding that Lisa is his future & plans to get her to stay in Heart Falls. Add in a puppy mill, a start up animal rescue, 2 new roommates, a found dog & the home birth of Tamara & Caleb’s baby as well as a new sibling & we have a great addition to the Coleman’s of Heart Falls series. Author Vivian Arend is definitely keeping up with the sizzle & the drama that’s carried on from the Rocky Mountain House series. Definitely recommend.

Josiah and Lisa are each other but have been avoiding each other. Lisa agrees to a date and both are drawn to each other. Lisa has short plans of stating only until her new niece or nephew is born. Josiah wants more but isnt sure how to change Lisa's mind. Together they find unwanted and abused dogs but agree to do a fundraiser a few months later. Lisa freaks when Joaiah tells her he loves her but Lisa finally admits that she wants Josiah and together they will explore and live a great life together

Great read!

I really enjoyed this story! I loved watching Josiah and Lisa finally taking their chance and the openness with which they did so. Once Josiah knew that Lisa wasn’t planning to head back to Whiskey Creek he knew he had a chance to convince her that maybe what she wanted was in Heart Falls. This story was sweet and I loved getting to see the familiar faces from the Stones of Heart Falls series. It was an engaging and entertaining read and I can’t wait for Karen’s story!

Love Josiah and Lisa

Josiah has seen all of his previous girlfriends married to someone else making him wonder if he wasn’t good enough. Mid thirties have come and gone he’s ready to settle down, but Lisa is only in Heart Falls for a few months. He doesn’t want a fling but Lisa is so tempting, could he talk her into setting with him? I love Vivian’s sweet sexy romances and this one is one of her best.

Love the Coleman Women

The Coleman clan are a great bunch, but those Coleman women rock. We met Tamara Coleman in A Rancher’s Heart when she got her HEA with Caleb Stone. In this book Tamara and Caleb are integral characters while her sister Lisa is in Heart Falls to help them as they await the birth of their child. Lisa’s own HEA comes in the form of Josiah. As with the other books in the Coleman universe this one was well written and extremely enjoyable.

Lisa Coleman wants to stay in Heart Falls until her little sister Karen arrives then decides to stay for six months. Josiah Ryder is done with fast and easy woman and wants to settle down. He has his heart set on being with Lisa but she is only in town for six months. Lisa and Josiah have a little romantic fun. Josiah must convince Lisa to stay or she will leave forever. I really enjoyed reading this contemporary western romance fiction novel.

It was so easy to lose yourself while getting immersed in this book. The love between Josiah and Lisa just blew me away! The family dynamics of the Coleman ladies continue to twist their way into your hearts.
This is the first book in the Colemans of Heart Falls series and a great one for the series start. As always, I am looking forward to reading what Vivian Arend has next. Recommended read. It continues to be a pleasure listening to this series with Tatiana Sokolov narrating.

Lisa & Josiah
Lisa Coleman has come to Silver Stone ranch to help her older sister Tamara with her family. Tamara is having a difficult pregnancy and she needs to help with the girls and keep the house running. She's hoping by spring she will figure out her next move.
Throw in a look alike EMT named Julia, an illegal puppy mill rescue, and a very sexy Vet Josiah, and you have a really good story. I'm loving this series.

Lisa gets her man

The Whiskey Creek Colman ladies are making lives away from Rocky Mountain Home. Lisa goes to Heart Falls to help Tamara. Local veterinarian Josiah finds Lisa quirky and fascinating. Throw in a sweet terrier and it's a love match. This is a low angst, fun, sexy read.

The story flow is really smooth. Not much complications.
Love the main characters, sub characters and the hotness between Lisa and Josiah.
I just wished that this was written or narrated in a dual POV type.
I can feel it more if it's on a dual POV. Just saying.
Still recommending this book and the series.

HATED h, she’s flighty, doesn’t help her pregnant sister, instead she goes and basically harasses H, he’s shown no interest in you and when you try to kiss him he literally ran away from you and you still try to get him to sleep with you? She’s downright pathetic, has no respect for herself and flings herself all the time at H🙄

Lisa wants more for her life. She is helping her pregnant sister with her other 2 kids. Once all is settled Lisa will be off on her next adventure. Josiah wants to settle down but is nervous to get involved with a woman who only wants his money. Josiah is intrigued by Lisa's independence. How does he convince her to stay? This audiobook was entertaining and well narrated by Tatiana Sokoloff.

I vacillated between 3 and 4 stars for this novel. Most of Vivian Arend's novels have gotten 5 stars from me. She's a talented writer. Her talent still showed in this work. Lisa and Josiah are both likeable and well-developed characters. The interactions among Lisa's family members were well-done. However, the story moved a bit too slowly for me. I also like stories that have more angst than this one did. Still, a good story with a satisfying HEA.
