Games Workshop Group PLC (often abbreviated as GW) is a British miniature wargaming manufacturing company. Games Workshop is best known as developer and publisher of the tabletop wargames Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000 and The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game.
Even by modern GW standards, the background material in here is pretty weak. There are a few interesting ideas, and some unique locations, but for the most part it's the usual over-the-top stuff they've come to rely on.
The amount of devastation and bloodshed is so constant and so predictable that it ceases to have any real impact. After the 17th regiment is wiped out by some sneak attack or plague or the like, it starts to lose any weight.
That being said, the actual mechanics in here are pretty neat. Lots of inspiration for campaigns and unique formations, and I was very pleasantly surprised by the back half of the book. For someone like me who's into narrative gaming, there's a lot to chew on here, even if the story, ironically, is the least interesting.
This campaign book was really my starting place for playing 40K. I love the setting and all the narrative beats it gave to help break away from matched/competitive play. I still use some of the missions for my current games of 30K.
