I'd had it with magic. Me and it were no longer friends.

This addict went cold turkey. Five years I'd been clean for, not even a taste of the good stuff. No longer a space cadet.

Life was quiet, life was good. Life was as boring as a conference on boring hosted by Professor Boring McBoring from Boringsville University. So, I have to admit, that when I got drawn back into the Hidden world I wasn't as reluctant as I made out.

What I wasn't expecting was having to deal with a dragon holding the dwarves' gold hostage, accidentally unleashing a maniac on the city, and fighting for my life as everything goes into free fall. Oh, plus I've got myself lumbered with a rather keen wizard-in-training.

Now I'm almost out of time, certainly out of luck, but I have responsibilities and I will fight until the bitter end. Problem being, the end is looking decidedly nasty, and a blast from our collective past threatens to leave the entire world a barren wasteland.

Hi, I'm Faz Pound, and, once again, you can call me Black Spark, Dark Magic Enforcer.

I'm also considering swearing off the magic again.

The books are a tad repetitive but the adventures are getting better. I do like that there’s no love triangle (even though Faz can be a perv) and he and Kate are a solid couple. Dancer is more involved and now we have Mithnite who is learning to be a warlock.

Full disclosure, I was provided with an advance copy of this book by the author as part of his “A-Team” in exchange for an honest review.

The worst case of the Mondays ever!

Hidden Spark picks up five years after the conclusion of Neon Spark. Having successfully tracked down and eliminated Kimiko Kochi after impossible odds Faz has entered retirement from the magical community. Being totally magic free for the past 5 years, he is a new man… and totally miserable. A deep depression grips him complete with night terrors and general feelings of worthlessness. But he is resolute… the addict is reformed and he will no longer partake of the stolen magic he so desperately craves. When the phone rings one early morning, not unlike many other occasions, Faz knows what he must do.

Get back in the game

But of course an Enforcer’s job is not easy, especially when it involves dragons, dwarves, gnomes and fanatics running amok in the streets of Cardiff. Luckily, Faz has Kate and a sidekick this time to help him out but the situation spirals quickly out of control until it turns into an all-out war for survival. It will take more than the Black Spark to set things right this time.

I was wondering where the Dark Magic Enforcer series could go after the ultimate resolution of Faz getting the revenge he’s waited a century to deliver. I seriously thought that the series would be over after Neon Spark but I must say that I am glad that it wasn’t. The 5-year gap between Neon Spark and Hidden Spark, in my opinion, was perfect to set the stage for a new era in the Cardiff Hidden community. The councils have settled down and installed a new head with the wizards and vamps actually playing nice for a change as the community as a whole appears to have healed and rebuilt after the prior troubles that plagued them. During this time, Faz has been playing farmer with the chickens and setting out porridge for the hobs. As he resumes his enforcer duties after being so purposefully checked out for so long it’s like he’s coming out of a daze and opening his eyes to all that he’s missed. The unlikely situation of Faz taking a younger wizard under his wing and letting him tag along for some on the job enforcer training is interesting too with Spark being an alone, the dynamic of having a sidekick is pretty amusing to watch develop. As usual there is no end to the fast paced incredible amounts of action and situations that keep our favorite Enforcer on his toes. From the dwarven kingdom to the bowels of a volcano, our hero really has his work cut out for him this time. And with an ending that had me screaming at my kindle… I am very ready for Dark Magic Enforcer 7!

After his trip to Japan, where he finally avenged the deaths of his parents, Faz Pound had had it with magic. He returned to Cardiff and tried to live a ‘normal’ life, refusing to use magic. Instead, he retreated to his farmhouse with his vampire girlfriend, Kate. But, after five years, he’s bored out of his skull, and realizes that without magic, he is nothing. He aches to return to work. His friend, Dancer, now head of the UK Council of the Hidden, calls and offers him a job. He wanted to get back in the saddle, but going after a dragon that is keeping the dwarves from their hoard of gold wasn’t really his idea of the first job he wanted after a five-year hiatus. But, he takes it.
Now, Faz, the Black Spark, a Dark Magic Enforcer, is no friend of dwarves—heck, dwarves aren’t particularly fond of each other, and Faz knows that he’s really no match for a real dragon, but a job’s a job, so off he goes to the underground lair of the Queen of the Dwarves. There he finds not ‘a’ dragon, but The Dragon, the legendary mage who brought magic to the world. The Dragon wants his help, he wants Faz to help him escape the dwarves’ lair with his skin intact. Faz shrugs and complies, only to learn that The Dragon has a whole other agenda, one that could be fatal to Faz and all his friends. Faz discovers that it’s not real dragons he must fear—it’s all the other snakes skulking around in the grass, the woodwork, and just about everywhere he turns.
Hidden Spark by Al K. Line is the sixth book in the Dark Magic Enforcer series, and while it’s not the best of the lot, it’s still one heck of a fine read. The author knows how to pull the reader into the mind of his characters, to make you smell the brimstone, or is it Sulphur, and involuntarily duck when Faz’s tattoos start to pulse. Take my word for it, you’ll enjoy this book.

Wow! Spark is back and better than ever. The roller coaster ride this book puts you on makes you grab on not want to let go. The book is full of non-stop, great action with characters we have all come to love, especially Faz Pound, Black Spark. There is a new addition to the cast of motley characters whom I am anxious to get to know more about; and we get to see everyone, with Grandma only making a cameo appearance, but the small glimpse is nice. I really enjoy the way Spark has come to be completely comfortable with himself and the people around him. He's really grown as a character and the books are really fun because of it. We get a little of everything: lava, zombies, paninis, and tiger shifters...and one character I don't want to spoil! There is a cliffhanger ending which makes you desperate to get the next book in the series. I know I can't wait to see what happens next and you need to read the book so you can say the same thing. Wonderful edition to a great series. If you haven't started this series yet, you need to as soon as possible. If you have read the series, this is one you need to grab as soon as possible. Highly recommend!

A rollicking adventure

Black Spark is a fun character, and watching him grow into a 'proper' wizard is engrossing. The writing is good, the story sold, and the snarkiness is endless. Plus, winklepeckers.

Definitely read it.

Great Urban Fantasy

All the Spark books are excellent. This one continued the story adding a new apprentice for spark an incredible fight with the creator of magic and ends with a surprising outcome for our hero.
Got to read the next one.
