A favorite, surpassing the sea of ECON101 books; the storytelling alone makes me revisit this annually. The most accessible and engaging intro to "the market society" (capitalism) you can ask for, unraveling this enigma while rooted in real-life concerns and historical/global scope...

--A flow of stories grounded in real world history bringing to life the big-picture logic and contradictions of our global market economy, with minimal jargon and zero abstract formulas. You can supplement the rest elsewhere; the purpose here is to get you inspired to explore...

As a teacher of economics, I have always believed that if you are not able to explain the economy in a language young people can understand, then, quite simply, you are clueless yourself.

--Varoufakis is a compelling speaker as well, with many lectures online.

0) Note: the pre-capitalist summary is based on Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies, which takes a separate review to unpack.
1) The historical creation of the land market (real estate): with the increasing global market in traded goods (note: markets for "real commodities" pre-date "capitalism"), land was given a price (commodified, no longer solely tied to ancestry/tradition) by estimating how much in real commodities (ex. wool) it can generate for exchange on the global market.
2) The historical creation of the labour market (wage labour contract): the commodification of land brought about the "Enclosures", where the "Commons" (common lands) were privatized and serfs kicked off feudal land (with State force) so landlords can switch to raising commodities for the emerging global market (or at least hiring a few serfs as proto-entrepreneurs and extracting rent).
...Clearly, only some property rights matter, and only some State force is bad interference on markets. The remaining landless serfs were free to starve, or sell their labour (thus, human labour is commodified on a grand scale, creating the labour market); unlike some vague "human nature" of "buying/selling", this is a grisly history that remains (prison industrial complex, militarized borders) to enforce dependency of the dispossessed towards markets both for wages and goods.
...Note: this section on England's internal Enclosures relies on The Origin of Capitalism: A Longer View. Such privatizations were also experienced externally in the British Empire via colonialism. Less is More: How Degrowth Will Save the World portrays market privatization as creating "artificial scarcity" and counters this with the "radical abundance" of expanding the social Commons, which has been the pillar of raising life expectancy (and crucial to decolonization), i.e. public sanitation/health, land reform, education, women's rights, social security, etc.

...Land and labour are 2 peculiar "markets" conveniently omitted by pro-capitalists who want to portray market exchange of "real commodities" as the totality of human nature, as if we live in a world of individual shopkeepers (each owning our own means of production rather than dispossessed, how convenient!) bartering our products with one another.
...However, land and labour markets feature "fictitious commodities" as nature and humans are not "produced" (with a cost of production) just to be bought/sold on the market.
...We can see the transition from "societies with markets" (markets for real commodities have long existed) into a "market society" ("capitalism", a term burdened by propagandist baggage; this transformation is detailed in The Great Transformation: The Political and Economic Origins of Our Time).

3) The market society's logic: real commodities as well as land/labour/money (see later) are transformed into commodities (for market exchange); thus, "exchange-value" (i.e. what can be earned from selling on the market) becomes an end-in-itself and obscures "experiential-value" (called "use-value" by Marx). Capitalist production seeks to sell commodities on the market rather than personal use.
...This has plenty of consequences on:
i) labour (ex. abstracting/objectifying it into the commodity, i.e. Marx's "commodity fetishism")
ii) money (ex. money's power to exchange for any commodity, symbolizing exchange-value's end-in-itself, thus endless accumulation where money grows more money; this is different from experiential-value, which has limits)
iii) environment (see below), etc.

4) The "Great Reversal": how capitalism begins with debt (the loan to raise the capital needed) as opposed to beginning with production (serfs farming), thus debt merges with entrepreneurial profit-seeking (selling on the global market to survive paying rent/competition and ultimately accumulate power). Money is the 3rd peculiar market with fictitious commodities.
5) How industrialization required such large loans that private banking/financial markets proliferate, where the loan money is created out of nothing (i.e. private banks create credit-money, magically borrowed from the future, anticipating future productivity gains will pay it back; this accounts for most of private bank lending, which is not just lending out other savers' deposits). Debt (and its accompanying expectation of future profit) fuels capitalist growth (thus, "economic growth" is synonymous with "economic health"). 6) How this debt-driven dynamism brings inherent instability (as opposed to some harmonious, natural equilibrium of perceptual growth raising all boats envisioned by pro-capitalist utopians): private banks profit from more and bigger loans (greater interest payments), a clockwork for speculative bubbles given their magic of conjuring money/debt. We can see this transformation culturally, where many major religions used to condemn the charging of interest as "usury", but this withered away with the power relations of debt under capitalism:

7) Repeated crises necessitated reforms:
a) Debt forgiveness: Limited Liability + bankruptcy laws instead of debtors' prisons, although overwhelmingly for the rich; history reveals how important debt forgiveness is when extended to the whole of society: ...And Forgive Them Their Debts
b) Central banking: "apolitical" money (ex. Bitcoin) is a dangerous fallacy in several ways, from its curious lack of dynamism (rigid quantity) to its lack of political guarantees/crisis management. "Apolitical" implies being outside the possibility of democratic scrutiny; the market is one-dollar-one-vote. This is also why political democracy is insufficient, because power has left to reside in the economic sphere of unaccountable banks (central and private), corporate bureaucracies, etc.
c) Public debt: since the rich evade taxes, this is the main alternative to actually keep the economy running, providing enough private surplus (spending power)/physical and social infrastructure. If we simply shrink state spending (ex. Bill Clinton's budget surplus), then society is forced to rely on private finance (Bill Clinton's further deregulation of Wall Street) who profit from high interest charges/booms and busts. Reagan infamously cut state spending on social needs but ballooned state spending on military; that is the American way. Finally, government bonds are a gift providing crucial liquidity for private banks.
...These reforms try to keep money circulating ("recycling") and ensuring faith in private banks/money/markets so they do not become idle as capitalism spirals out of control, but this cannot resolve the paradox of private banking's instability (where capitalism is run on debt, and periods of stability assures bankers to make riskier loans). Varoufakis connects the dots to real-world financial crises in:

8) Private banks amplify deeper instabilities: human expectations of the economy’s health/other's expectations make capitalists’ hiring (labour market) + investment (financial/money markets) volatile:
a) Those who believe in market equilibrium believe the market will always adjust for unemployment. If you cannot find a job at your desired wage, just drop your wage and an employer will be happy to hire you. However, labour is a unique commodity because it is a means (zero experiential-value, i.e. you are not hired to be friends with the boss) to an end (profits, exchange-value). Dropping wages could signal a slumping economy, thus the employer may expect slumping demand and thus will not hire you despite your discounted wage. This pessimism can spread to other capitalists and become self-fulfilling!
b) The same applies with the money market, where lowered interest rates (the cost of borrowing) may actually scare off capitalist investment because they expect a slumping economy...

9) Even deeper we go: the crisis of profitability... Profits are the sole driver of capitalism (not social needs, which would be socialism); without profits, the lights go off. Profits require prices > costs, but:
a) Competition forces prices down and to not stray far from costs, which itself is falling through automation/larger economies-of-scale.
b) Automation for cost-cutting adds up to overall less employment/less wages, thus less demand (purchasing power) to pay for the increased production (overproduction).
...The irrationality of the profit motive becomes clear during crises, when wealth is hoarded and goods even destroyed (to keep prices from crashing further) as social needs are abandoned (ex. the endless Great Depression in The Grapes of Wrath, which was only ended by the creative destruction of WWII and its new war markets, the greatest war in human history).
...Note: even during the good times, many social needs are abandoned by lack of profitability, i.e. the millions of preventable deaths each year from inadequate drinking water/starvation/vaccine-treatable diseases in global capitalism's most-exploited regions despite the mountains of hoarded resources.

10) The existential crisis of environmental destruction: the endless accumulation of exchange-value (quantified with money) as an end-in-itself (obscuring experiential-value) results in stunning externalities (external to market pricing): a forest (immeasurable experiential-value, thus immeasurable positive externality) has no exchange-value until it is privatized and cut down for lumber (or privatized to sell/rent/speculate). In fact, a forest on fire has more exchange-value from the firefighting stimulating market activities!
...A key negative externality is pollution (i.e. cutting costs by dumping it on everyone else), which is crucial for capitalist's endless accumulation/viral growth despite its long-term endangerment of human survival.
...Privatizing the environment will only further exacerbate exchange-value's dominance; "Tragedy of the Commons" is actually tragedy of capitalism's individualist profit-seeking! (see: Mexie's video and Governing the Commons: The Evolution of Institutions for Collective Action)

This is a lovely book and I’ve asked both of my daughters to read it and have already started talking to one of them about it. It is nice for a couple of reasons. The first is that it explains complicated ideas in highly accessible ways. As he says at the start, you probably shouldn’t trust anyone who can’t explain even difficult concepts in a way that a reasonably educated person can understand. This is doubly true of economics, particularly since our world is run according to the dictates of economists – you know, if you are going to ruin my life with your austerity policies, then you should have the decency to explain to me why I should do without health care and an education system for my kids. And more than the vague platitudes Dire Straits parodied (We’re gonna have to pay what’s owed, we’re gonna have to reap from some seed that’s been sowed).

The book uses science fiction and Greek myths to provide metaphors to help explain economic concepts. It also references some of my favourite books – like Guns, Germs and Steel – to provide a kind of ‘why us and not them’ background to economic development. He also references some ideas from behavioural economics, not least the idea that moving from transactions of social solidarity to those of financial exchange often undermine what is best and most human about our interactions. The example he gives is of people giving blood – something dear to my heart as I’ve been doing this for years. In Australia you don’t get paid for the blood you donate. I do it because I think it is a nice way to give back to society without getting to choose who you are going to help. Too much charity is about us giving to ‘people like us’ or people so distant as to be abstract concepts, more than fellow humans – I like the idea that I’ve no idea who my blood will end up in – that it could potentially be someone like my current prime minister, who I would struggle to pour water on if he was on fire.

In other countries they pay people to give blood. You might think that the countries where they pay you would end up with more blood. That they would have the people like me still doing it, but also other people (poor people perhaps) who need the money. So, A plus B ought to be more than just A alone. This isn’t how it works out. As he says, making it a financial transaction puts people off donating – because the idea of ‘selling’ your blood seems distasteful. In this case we have moved from altruism to a financial transaction – and the value of the transaction isn’t enough and perhaps never could be enough to make it seem worthwhile – whereas when it was being done for free it became something quite different.

The same thing happened years ago when a city council I used to work at contracted out a service that they once provided as a community service – meals on wheels for the elderly. The organization that won the contract thought that they would be able to continue to use the volunteers that had ‘always’ helped out. But even though the contract winner would still be delivering meals to the very same old people, the volunteers were not at all happy to be asked to donate their labour so that an organization would be able to profit from it. And the organization was planning to profit from the contract. The commodification of transactions isn’t really compatible with social solidarity.

The discussion in the book of the transition from Feudalism to Capitalism is also instructive and interesting. He links this to the enclosing of land and therefore the removal of peasants, who had to then go to towns searching for work. As such, they had to sell their labour for the first time – making their labour a commodity – something that is a precondition of capitalist production. The author is particularly good at explaining the difference between work that is done to sustain social interactions and work that is done in exchange for wages, and how the previous, in patriarchal societies, wasn’t always ‘fair’ either.

He explains the problems associated with replacing human labour with machines and how this undermines economic development since it allows those who own the machines to horde so much of society’s wealth.

I think his explanation of how and why markets are likely to fail is useful since it is so clear and so clearly, and pointedly, directed at arguments against the ‘tragedy of the commons’.

This is a fast read, and one that never gets beyond the common reader who is paying attention. It explains difficult concepts like how banks can create money out of thin air, how they have incentives to do this little magic trick a little too often, and how that ultimately means governments will need to step in as the whole thing comes crashing down. It explains how inflation and interest rates work and are interrelated. Like I said, there are a lot of otherwise complex ideas explained here in ways that are both easy to follow and, in fact, really engaging. And that is as it should be.

در طول تاریخ، تمام دولت‌های برآمده از جوامع کشاورزی مازاد خود را با بی‌عدالتی زننده‌ای توزیع می‌کردند که به نفع آنهایی بود که قدرت اجتماعی، سیاسی و نظامی داشتند...چطور این حکام توانستند قدرت‌شان را حفظ کنند و از جانب اکثریت در امان بمانند؟ پاسخ این است: با پروردن نوعی ایدئولوژی که سبب شد اکثریت عمیقا از ته دل باور کنند که تنها حکام آنها حق دارند فرمانروایی کنند؛ باور کنند که در بهترین جهان ممکن زندگی می‌کنند؛ که همه چیز همان طور است که مقدر بوده؛ که وضعیت بر روی زمین بازتاب نوعی نظم الهی است که هر گونه مخالفتی با حکام در تضاد با قدرت مشیت الهی است. ص 26 کتاب
جان مینارد کینز، یکی از برترین اقتصاددان‌هایی که تا کنون زیسته در مقاله‌اش این طور می‌نویسد: «عشق ورزیدن به پول به عنوان نوعی دارایی ... می‌تواند فی نفسه یک جور ابتلای منزجر کننده، یکی از گرایشات نیمه مجرمانه و نیمه بیمارگون شناخته شود که آدم می‌تواند با چندش تحویل متخصصان بیماری‌های روانی بدهد.» ص 118 کتاب
یک جامعه‌ی معقول و به قاعده نه فقط باید مدیریت پول و فناوری را دموکراتیک کند، بلکه باید مدیریت منابع گیاهی و همین طور زیست بوم را نیز دموکراتیک کند. چرا این قدر تاکید روی دموکراسی؟ چون، با نقل گفته‌ی شوخ طبعانه‌ی وینستون چرچیل، دموکراسی شاید شکل خیلی بدی از حکومت- معیوب، پرخطا، نابسنده و فاسد نسبت به آنچه به مردم وعده می‌دهد- باشد، اما از تمام گزینه‌های دیگر بهتر است. ص 158 کتاب

كتاب رائع يستحق القراءة

في كتابه الاقتصاد كما أشرحه لابنتي يطرح يانيس فاروفاكيس تساؤلات مثل

على مدار 8 فصول، يتعمق الكتاب في شرح جوانب علم الاقتصاد الأساسية كافة بأسلوب شيق، يستخدم خلاله أستاذ الاقتصاد قصصا وحكايات شخصية وعامة، ويتطرق إلى الأساطير، ويشرح مفاهيم اقتصادية معقدة عبر أمثلة شديدة البساطة والتركيز.

This is a farce of a review. This is the review equivalent of "felt cute, might delete later." My brain seems to be crashing. You have been warned.

Yanis Varoufakis who was the minister of finance of Greece in 2015, witnessed firsthand the workings and implementation of the worst austerity measures in recent times and so is certainly well equipped to write an econ-101 book. We'd have to be fools to not heed his warnings.

This is a very powerful book and here are some powerful things I learnt from it:

1] Question : Where does money come from?
Answer: Vacuum.
Recent detailed studies and observations have revealed that in line with its ever-evasive nature, money also originates from nothing. Obviously you can't create something out of nothing unless you possess God-like properties. So poof! All the money in the world disappears this very instant in order to eradicate the logical fallacy created by its existence. Nah, this is just wishful thinking. Turns out, there are individuals with God-like powers who conjure up money from nothing:

Creature: Banker.
Dominion: Financial sector.
Powers: Spontaneous generation of highly valued paper, crashing the global economy and triggering slow annihilation of the planet.

How do they possess such immense powers? We gave it to them! How is this system that is surely unstable sustained? Why, of course! In the same way any religious dogma is sustained - through propoganda induced faith and some good old state sponsored violence.

(Unrelated: In a recent interview, Varoufakis estimated that in 2009, 12 trillion dollars were spontaneously created and funnelled into the US economy alone. Between 2008-2020, the largest amount of money in the history of capital has been circulating in the financial system while there has been the lowest level of investment in jobs, green transaction and technology compared with the liquidity available. Is your national healthcare system crashing right now in light of the covid-19 crisis? Oh, worry not! It is not due to lack of funds, it is simply because the government has no vested interest in keeping you alive! It's nothing personal - it's just that as an individual you don't generate the massive amounts of profit that they REQUIRE.)

2] Public debt: the weapon of bankers. (Along with the blood of the young but while that's just consumed on full moons, public debt is a 24X7 thing.):-

Consider the popular folklore thay the state provides services and goods in exchange for the taxes we pay. Note, however, this simple contradiction - the rich aren't taxed enough and the average worker's wages are too low to pay a compensatory tax that can collectively keep the state running.

So where has the additional money come from? The answer is: public debt. And who has provided the government with the requisite loans? The bankers, of course! And where have the bankers found the money? I hardly need tell you that they have conjured it from thin air, just as they did with Miriam’s loan. You can start to see how paying low taxes works doubly in the bankers’ favour.

3] Eat the rich (obviously not literally) before they eat up the planet. :-

Remember the tragedy of the commons? That popular 'theory' that was less popularly although thoroughly dismantled by Elinor Ostrom? Yeah, turns out that the rich have a propensity towards the destruction of the planet simply because it favors profit returns and have been churning-out/funding propoganda driven 'theories' for decades now.

The reason the rich and powerful, along with their intellectual and ideological supporters, recommend the complete privatization of our environment is not that they are opposed to government; they’re just opposed to government interventions that undermine their property rights and threaten to democratize processes that they now control. And if, in the process, they get to own Planet Earth, that’s OK by them too!

4] Democratize vs commodify:-

So this is the epic battle of our generation.

Your era will be typified by the momentous clash between two opposing proposals: ‘Democratize everything!’ versus ‘Commodify everything!’ The proposal favoured by powerful and influential people and institutions is ‘Commodify everything!’ They want to convince you that the solution to our world’s problems is to accelerate and to deepen the commodification of human labour, land, machines and the environment. ‘Democratize everything!’ is the recommendation that I have been building towards throughout this book. Take your pick. The clash of these two agendas will determine your future well after I am gone. If you wish to have any say in that future, then you and your contemporaries will have to form an opinion on this matter and articulate good arguments with which to win others to your point of view.

I don't share Varoufakis' optimism. I'm afraid it might already be too late to make a choice.

Enough of this. Please read the book.

Note: Nowhere in the book does Varoufakis say anything about bankers consuming the blood of the young. That's just my personal conspiracy theory.

إن الاقتصاد شديد الأهمية لدرجة أنه لا يجب أن يترك للمتخصصين في الاقتصاد.

على هذه الجملة المنطقية والمتناقضة في الوقت نفسه، ألف يانيس فاروفاكيس هذا الكتاب. بصفته استاذاً في الاقتصاد ووزير مالية سابق لبلده اليونان، فقد تراكمت لديه الخبرات العلمية والعملية، وبصفته يسارياً فهو مهتم بنواحٍ معينة مثل عدم المساواة وحقوق العمّال وحمى تسليع كل شيء.

كما يظهر من عنوان الكتاب، فهو موجه للمبتدئين ومن ليست لديهم أية خلفية في ذلك العلم الشائك. نص صديق للقارئ، زاخر بالأمثلة اللطيفة والاقتباسات من الأدب والحكايات الشعبية. استمتعت بقراءته واستقيت منه بعض الأفكار المهمة مثل القيمة الاستعمالية والقيمة التبادلية، الدين العام، العلاقة بين البنك المركزي والبنوك التجارية، التضخم والانكماش...إلخ كما أبدع الكاتب في توضيح فكرة تنبؤات المستهلك التي تحقق نفسها بنفسها، فكرة عجيبة وقد أثبتت التجارب صحتها. أما الفصل الخاص باقتصاد معتقل الأسرى الأوروبيين أثناء الحرب العالمية فقد كان الأروع بلا شك.

أعتقد أن الكتاب يفتقر إلى التقسيم والطرح المنهجي، لم أشعر أنه يبدأ عاماً ثم يصبح أكثر تفصيلاً، لم أجد تدرجاً معيناً أو السير نحو استنتاج محدد. يعتبر مدخلاً ممتازاً على أن يُتبع بكتب أكثر منه كثافةً وشمولية.

کتابِ ساده ی واروفاکیس کتابی کارآمد و البته خواندنی ست. نویسنده که خود در دوره ای بسیار بحرانی وزیر اقتصادِ کشور ارجمند یونان بوده است با تسلط به موضوعِ اقتصاد و سرمایه داری شرحِ کوتاه اما دقیقی از مشکل ها و شکلِ کلی جامعه ی بازار داده است. به گمانم خواندن چنین کتابی در این روزهای آشوب زده که داریم تا اندازه ای دیدگاه های تازه و البته دیگرگونی خواهد داد. طبعن با شرایطی که در پیش برد جامعه ی ما رو به سقوطِ ازلی ابدی وجود دارد باید دستِ کم این سقوط را آگاهانه انجام دهیم. اگر دقت کنیم چیز عجیبی در فرآیند ذهنی ما وجود دارد و آن محکوم کردنِ پیوسته ی گذشتگان و گاهی تقدیس آنهاست. فراموش نکنیم که ما گذشتگانِ آیندگانی هستیم که بی تردید نفرین مان خواهند کرد از بس بی خردانه روزگار گذرانده ایم و از بس در انفعالِ ناخوشایندِ ذهن را خانه ی عنکبوتان کردن سپریِ دوران کرده ایم. باری یادمان بیاوریم که هر روز که بگذرد فاصله ی ما و آن دیگران بیش و بیشتر می شود. دیر زمانی نخواهد بود که تمامِ ساختارهای رویایی ما که از پای بست ویران است فرو ریزند(مگر نریخته اند هنوز؟) و راه گریز تنها و تنها انتحار جمعی باشد. شاید من برخلاف نویسنده چندان خوش بین نباشم به سرانجامی که او در کتاب ترسیم می کند اما این را یقین دارم که دست کم برای ما که مجالِ چنانی نداریم، امید بیهوده بستن را جز تباهی چاره نیست

چاپِ کتاب بسیار دلچسب است. نشر بان خوب و خوش دست و خوش خوان کتاب را چاپ زده. ترجمه هم پذیرفتنی ست اما کتاب پُر است از اشتباه های چاپی و دو سه تایی اشتباهِ نوشتاری

دیگر نوشت 11/12/97: در گفت و شنودم در صبحِ جمعه ی کسالت بار که باز هم خبری از کسی نشد! دربارهی کتاب حرف ها زدیم. هر دو گمان می بردیم برخی بخش ها گنگ مانده اند و نامفهوم رها شده اند. نمی دانستم کار از ترجمه می لنگد یا نویسنده که واروفاکیس است نتوانسته آن گونه که باید شرح را کامل کند. با این وجود کتاب خواندنی ست و ارزشمند

•ما العلاقة بين أسلحة أخيل التي صنعها هيفستوس بيديه وتوافر الأسواق؟
•لماذا يملك بعض الناس كثيرا بينما يملك آخرون قليلاً؟
•ما العلاقة التى تربط " التاريخ المأساوي للدكتور فاوست" مسرحية كريستوفر مارلو الشهيرة بالدَّين والربح؟ ومن المنظور الاقتصادي ما السبب الذي جعل قصة د. فاوست للشاعر جوته التي كتبت في مطلع القرن التاسع عشر تختلف في نهايتها عن قصة مارلو في القرن ال١٦ عشر ؟!
•ما الذي يجمع بين قصة أوديب ملكا وبين قوة العمل والمال؟
••لهذه الأسئلة والكثير غيرها إجابات مثيرة وممتعة في هذا الكتاب.
يوجه الكاتب والاقتصادي يانيس فاروفاكيس حديثه لابنته فيقول:
« منذ القرن التاسع عشر كان رسل مجتمع السوق الاقتصاديون الذين يؤلفون الكتب ويكتبون المقالات الصحافية ويظهرون الآن على شاشات التلفزيون ومحطات الإذاعة وعلى الشبكة العنكبوتية. عندما يستمع الناس العاديون لهم أو يقرأون ما يكتبونه، يميلون إلى استخلاص هذه النتيجة: الاقتصاد أمر تقني وممل للغاية. وعلينا تركه للخبراء. لكن الحقيقة تفيد أنه لا يوجد خبراء حقيقيون، وأن الاقتصاد أكثر أهمية من أن يترك للاقتصاديين كما رأينا في هذا الكتاب، تحدد القرارات الاقتصادية كل شيء من أبسط الأمور إلى أعمقها. إن ترك الاقتصاد للخبراء يعادل ما فعله أولئك الذين عاشوا في العصور الوسطى من ترك رخائهم في عهدة اللاهوتيين والكرادلة ومفتشي محاكم التفتيش الإسبان يا لها من فكرة مريعة!»
_ عندما كانت تقابلني كلمات مثل تضخم، ربح، فوائد، دين عام، مصرف مركزي وغيرها من المصطلحات الاقتصادية غالبا كنت أشعر بالملل، اختيار هذا الكتاب كان موفق لدخول عالم الاقتصاد.
•• يناقش الكتاب الكثير مما قد يشغل ذهن من لم يقرأ سابقا عن الاقتصاد .. أو من خلفيته عن الاقتصاد جامعية مملة لا تسمن ولا تغني من جوع كما هو حال معرفتي بالاقتصاد..

⁦✍️⁩السبب الاقتصادي _الحقيقي_ وراء إلغاء نظام القنانة وطرد الفلاحين من الأراضي والذي أدى لتحول كبير في بريطانيا من مجتمع بأسواق إلى مجتمع السوق..
⁦✍️⁩_رواية ماري شيلي "فرانكنشتاين" البعيدة النظر عكست قلق كاتبة حساسة من الآثار المترتبة عن التكنولوجيا على المجتمع.
«_بات محرك جيمس واط البخاري وكثير من الاختراعات التي تلته جزءا لا يتجزأ من مجتمعات السوق وذلك فحسب بسبب دافع الربح والتنافس بين أصحاب المشاريع الساعين وراء الربح الذين أنجبتهم مجتمعات السوق. افترضي للحظة أن واط قد عاش في مصر القديمة في ظل الفراعنة واخترع محركه البخاري في ذلك الوقت. ما الذي كان سيحدث؟ تخيلي أن واط حصل على مقابلة مع الفرعون لعرض اختراعه. كان جل ما يستطيع توقعه هو أن يعجب حاكم مصر باختراعه ويضع في قصره محركا أو أكثر ليظهر للزوار والأتباع مدى عبقرية إمبراطوريته. في ظل غياب تنافس أصحاب المشاريع على الربح، ومئات آلاف العبيد الذين كانوا رهن إشارته، لن يستخدم محرك واط لتزويد المزارع والورشات بالطاقة، ناهيكِ من المصانع.»

⁦✍️⁩_حكاية إيكاروس الذي حلق بجناحيه قريبا جدا من الشمس تشبه حماقة مجتمعات السوق في تقدمها المؤلم نحو الأتمتة (Automation) واستبعاد قوة عمل العمال من الإنتاج..

⁦✍️⁩••• الوهم الخطير للمال غير السياسي... بالنسبة لي من أمتع فصول الكتاب، فمن خلال قصة حقيقية عن أحد معسكرات الأسرى في الحرب العالمية الثانية يشرح الكاتب لابنته كسينيا عن طريق سوق مصغر : ظهور عملة السجائر، التضخم والانكماش، معدلات الفائدة، والفارق بين اقتصاد معسكر أسرى الحرب واقتصادات السوق النقدية.

⁦✍️⁩ يعطي الكاتب لمحة سريعة وبسيطة عن عملة بيتكوين الرقمية بمميزاتها وعيوبها.
•• على مدار صفحات الكتاب يظهر لنا إيمان الكاتب الراسخ بالديمقراطية باعتبارها الحل العملي الوحيد لكل المشاكل، يستعير مقولة ونستون تشرشل الساخرة:« قد تكون الديمقراطية نمطاً فظيعا من الحكم _ معيبا وغير معصوم وغير فعال وفاسدا مثل الأشخاص الذين يتكون منهم _ لكنها أفضل من أي بديل آخر»
ويقدم حجج قوية تدعم وجهة نظره دون إرغام القارئ أو ابنته على اعتناق أجندته ولكن على تكوين رأي ووجهة نظر خاصة..
أحب أن أختم المراجعة بهذه الأبيات الجميلة التي انتهى بها الكتاب:

«بدترین بردگی از آنِ احمق‌های خوشحال به‌شدت تلقین‌شده‌ای است که زنجیرهایشان را می‌ستایند و بی‌صبرانه از اربابانشان به خاطر لذت پابوسی‌شان شاکرند.»

واروفاکیس این اربابان رو معدود ثروتمندان و نظام سرمایه داری میدونه و زنجیرها هم ؛

مثال عالیش، مراکز خرید که با معماری و موسیقی و طراحی داخلی به طور کلی همه چیز طوری طراحی شده تا ذهن رو بی‌حس کنه و ما را با سرعتی بهینه از میان راهروها و فروشگاه‌ها عبور دهد و خلاقیت و خودانگیختگی را با چیزهایی بر دوش ترک کنیم که احتمالاً نه لازمشان داشتیم و نه وقتی داخل شدیم می‌خواستیمشان.
نویسنده ماتریکس رو به مراکز خرید که نمود سرمایه‌داری هست ترجیح میده!

یکی دیگه از این زنجیرهای سرمایه داری : رسانه‌های جمعی که هدفشان سرهم کردنِ اجماعِ جمعی با تصمیمات سیاسی الیگارشی برضد منافع خودم��ن یا کره‌ی زمین. نمونه‌ش رسانه‌‌های خودکامه، فیس‌بوک، اینستاگرام...

نویسنده کلاً اقتصاددان‌ها رو بی‌سواد و غیرضروری میدونه، با اینکه خودش اقتصاددان و وزیر اقتصاد یونان بوده. به فیلسوف و انسان آزاده معتقد هست و اقتصاد رو اصلا علمی نمیدونه مثل فیزیک و ریاضیات. اقتصاددان‌ها رو پشگوهایی پراشتباه با قدرت تلقین بالا به توده‌ها میدونه که بازار رو به هر سمتی که سرمایه‌داری بخواد میبرن.

راه‌حل‌هاش :
جامعه‌ی بازار دموکراتیک، اشتراک ابزار و سودِ بازار و در ادامه‌ش مسئولیت جمعی.


در آخر به دخترش که این کتاب رو براش نوشته میگه که انجام پرش ارشمیدسی برای نجات بشر لازم هست.

«و اگر بخواهی بزرگ که شدی انسانی آزاده بمانی و راه خودت را در این جهان پیدا کنی، ضروری است که نوعی آزادی نایاب اما حیاتی را در خود بپرورانی: آزادی برآمده از این دانش که اقتصاد چگونه کار میکند و از توان پاسخ به این پرسش میلیارد دلاری که: «جلو چشمت و در
جای دیگر آدم‌ها چه بر سر هم می‌‌آورند؟!»»

این کتاب وقایع‌نگارانه نیست، همچین قصدی هم نداره. فقط تاریخ مختصری از سرمایه‌داری است و خیلی لذیذ و زیبا، حتما پیشنهاد میکنم ، حجم زیادی هم نداره.

Buddy read with R Nair

"The worst slavery is that of heavily indoctrinated happy morons who adore their chains and cannot wait to thank their masters for the joy of their subservience."

I've been meaning to read a book explaining how Capitalism works for a very long time, and I'm glad to say that this concise yet inclusive work of non-fiction delivers splendidly.


Written in very simple language, this book explains:

The necessity of surplus for states to exist.
The emergence of profit as an end of itself.
The commodification of everything and the triumph of exchange value over experential value.
How the rich have accummulated (and keep accummulating) wealth, and why there is so much inequality.
How banks work and profit (including debts, interest rates, inflation and deflation).
Why financial crashes happen, and how public debt is not always a bad thing.
The faulty arguments of Unemployment Deniers (those who maintain that being unemployed is a personal failure stemming from the refusal to accept low wages, not a failure of our economic system).
The effect of our expectations on the course of the economy.
How machines and automation fit into our world.
The impossibility of de-politicizing money.
Why the destruction of the environment is a direct result of exchange value ruling supreme, and the call of the rich and powerful to privatize the entire planet (already happening).

"The reason the rich and powerful, along with their intellectual and ideological supporters, recommend the complete privatization of our environment is not that they are opposed to government; they’re just opposed to government interventions that undermine their property rights and threaten to democratize processes that they now control. And if, in the process, they get to own Planet Earth, that’s OK by them too!"


The author has also used great works like Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Faustus (not Faust) by Marlowe, Thoreau's allergory of the stag hunters, and The Matrix movie to illustrate how our fears and attitudes towards the turn our lives and the economy have taken bleed into and influence art. These stories were especially illuminating and shall remain unforgettable.

Even though reading Varoufakis's book has filled me with unmitigated despair at the world's current state of affairs, the mere act of educating ourselves offers a glimmer of hope for the future. By not blindly trusting the economists (who are not real scientists, by the way), we take matters into our own hands, and we are indeed capable of changing the course of history if we unite and remember what really matters, and that is not money in itself.

We have a very powerful enemy: the rich minority who has accummulated inconceivable private wealth built and then maintained on the back of state-sponsored violence (not as a result of their honest efforts, as they would like us to believe).

"State-sponsored violence isn’t the only thing governments have provided for the powerful since then. Whenever the state has used its revenues to pay for roads, tunnels and bridges over which goods can be transported, to maintain the hospitals and schools that deliver workers’ health and education, to support the downtrodden and unemployed, to police the towns and cities or to organize in any way the peaceful and stable functioning of society – whenever it has done any of these things (and many more besides), the state has provided the conditions in which individuals, especially the most powerful ones, have been able to pursue their path to wealth. Seen from this angle, the state has always provided the rich with a magnificent insurance policy. And the rich have returned the favour by doing all they can to avoid paying their premiums."


However, by participating in political life, and by extension, in the economy, we have the chance to choose to "demoratize everything" instead of "commodify everything, including the forests, the rivers, the atmosphere...".

Turning a blind eye will not make the problem vanish into thin air (we don't have superpowers like the greedy bankers). Amidst overwhelming propaganda, misinformation, and sheer stupidity, taking action is not a luxury; it's a must. Unless we want to confirm Agent Smith's description of us as stupid viruses:

‘You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not…There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.

Honestly, you will learn so many things that may seem awfully obvious in hindsight, yet most of us fail to make the connections. This should be compulsory reading for every person directly touched by the economy, namely, everyone.

An eye-opening, concise, and powerful read!

Două cărți excelente am citit săptămâna asta, fiecare mi-a furat câte o noapte (scriu despre asta duminică dimineață, la ora 7,15) M-au inspirat în egală măsură. Cartea lui Varoufakis este una dintre ele, despre cea de-a doua voi povesti săptămâna viitoare.
O carte scrisă în nouă zile, fără note de subsol și termeni greu de înțeles, cum adesea folosesc economiștii, pentru a părea interesanți, “Economia pe înțelesul fiicei mele” explică lucruri pe care cu toții ar trebui să le știm, să le stăpânim, pentru a fi mai puternici în fața banului. Desigur, asta nu se întâmplă, pentru că școala tradițională nu ne învață nimic despre economie în general, cu atât mai puțin chestiuni despre sursa inegalității, despre cum și de ce s-a trecut de la o economie a piețelor la o economie de piață, despre bani și stat, despre nenorocita de datorie, care a devenit motorul lumii, despre mariajul ei cu profitul și despre surplus și competiție. Explicațiile lui Varoufakis sunt plastice, te trimite la doctorul Faustus, dar și la Ulise și Ajax și armele lui Ahile. E de citit și apoi de dat copiilor. Vor privi cu totul altfel lumea, banii, afacerile și lăcomia. Astfel de cărți nu pot face lumea un loc mai bun, pentru că economiștii continuă să aibă un rol mult mai important decât ar merita unii care nu au absolut niciodată dreptate, dar pot face oameni mai buni. Ceea ce vă doresc tuturor.

قصة الاقتصاد.. من أيام استخدام الأصداف كعملة وصولًا إلى البتكوين.

الكتاب حلو ومكتوب بأسلوب ممتع ومناسب جدًا المبتدئين.. كشخص معلوماته مش قوية في المجال دا بدأت أمشي مع الكتاب واحدة واحدة فلقيت نفسي بتفاعل مع اللي بقرأه وأفهمه وأسأل نفسي أسئلة أفكر في إجاباتها.. وبعدها ألاقي الكاتب بيجاوب الأسئلة اللي كانت بتدور في دماغي.. وأكتر حاجة عجبتني هي الأمثلة اللي بيقتبسها من الكتب والأفلام والأساطير ويطبقها على الفكرة اللي بيشرحها فيخليها أقرب للتخيل..

الكتاب بيتناول مفاهيم أساسية زي الدَّيْن، المصارف العامة والمصرف المركزي، القيمة الاستعمالية والقيمة التبادلية، العلاقة بين الاقتصاد والسياسة، التضخم والانكماش.. لكن أحلى وأمتع جزء هو بالتأكيد قصة معسكر الأسرى في الحرب العالمية الثانية.

اللي كان بيضايقني إني أوقات كنت بقرأ الفقرة كذا مرة عشان أفهم، مش عشان صعوبة المحتوى بس عشان الصياغة كان فيها حاجة غلط.. ملعبكة شوية أو الجملة مش مترتبة صح.. معرفش دي مشكلة ترجمة ولا النص محتاج علامات ترقيم ولا ايه..

بس غير كدا الكتاب جميل ومفيد ويستاهل القراءة.

In this book, Varoufakis shows us how the growth of human civilization gave birth to the first systems of politically-legitimized inequality (and how ancient and feudal inequality, characterized by "societies with markets", gave way to a much different kind of world, that of the "market society", of capitalism, in which everyone is driven to, compelled to, sell their labour, and in which the only real value is "exchange value").

Varoufakis also takes us on a tour of several key moments that truly define the capitalist world as we now know it: the imposition of debt via the contract (with Marlowe's Dr. Faustus); the expansion of capitalism via debt-financed industrialisation (with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein); the "black magic" of how private bankers create money out of nothing (with John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath); the irrational mysteries of money and labour markets (with Jean-Jacques Rousseau's fable of "The Stag and the Hares" and the myth of King Oedipus); and the triple threat of our current economy, automation, virtual currencies and environmental degradation (with Star Trek and The Matrix).

In the end, this is a highly entertaining and informative little book, for the neophyte and initiate alike. I wish my own father had given something like this to me when I was a teen. Varoufakis closes with a juxtaposition of two ancient Greek concepts, idiotis vs Eudaimonia: idiots are those who place themselves outside of civilization by refusing to think of the common good: an idiot is literally a privateer, someone who minds only his own business, and ignores that of others. True happiness comes from understanding our true, interconnected nature, and involves an environment and an economy in which each of us can literally "flourish", grow from tiny acorns into mighty the oak trees of our fullest potential. Varoufakis challenges his daughter to see past the conventional wisdom of those idiots whose technocratic mumbo-jumbo would prevent us from reaching toward a more democratic world, one in which eudaimonia is a possibility for everyone. I have a hunch which side his daughter Xenia (whose name's "etymology comes from the Greek word xenos , meaning ‘stranger’ or ‘foreigner’ and translates as ‘kindness to strangers’" (146) will pick. He seems like a pretty good dad.

در کتاب حرفهایی با دخترم درباره ی اقتصاد آقای یانیس واروفاکیس ، اقتصاد دان معروف و وزیر سابق دارایی یونان در نامه هایی به دخترش که در استرالیا زندگی می کند نظر خود را در مورد وجود نابرابری ، اقتصاد های ضعیف و پیشرفته ، تاریخ سرمایه داری و شاید آینده اقتصاد بیان کرده .
او برای بیان مطلب از کشاورزی شروع کرده و این که با انقلاب کشاورزی مازاد محصولی بدست می آمد که باید مبادله می شد ، با افزایش مبادله نیاز به سکه های طلا و نقره و سپس حذف آن ها و خلق و ایجاد پول ، سپس تاسیس بانک ها و نقش محوری بانک مرکزی ،ارزش بسیار زیاد محیط زیست ، دخالت سیاست و دولتها در اقتصاد و مطالب چالش برانگیز دیگری در کتاب پرداخته .
او نگاهی منفی ( بر آمده از دیدگاه چپ ) به نقش بانکدارها و خلق پول بدون پشتوانه یا در حقیقت چاپ پول از هیچ جا دارد و نقش بانکها را در بحران های بین المللی مانند فروپاشی اقتصاد در سال 2008 (در اقتصاد رو به موت ایران زیاد احساس نشد ) بسیار پر رنگ می داند به داوری او شرایط آسان وام دهی بانکها از جیب سرمایه گذاران دیگر باعث پدید آمدن اقتصادی بادکنکی و سپس ترکیدن آن شده
یونان کشور نویسنده در پی این بحران اقتصادی ورشکسته شد ، واروفاکیس به طرح این سوال مهم می پردازد که ا��ر دولت وقت یونان بسته کمکی اروپا که باعث پایین آمدن شرایط زندگی و اقتصاد ریاضتی برای یونانیان شد را قبول نمی کرد چه اتفاقی می افتاد ؟
واروفاکیس به شدت از دیدگاه کالایی شدن همه چیز یا همه چیز برای مبادله انتقاد می کند و به گونه ای خواستار مشارکت همه مردم در ثروتهای عمومی می شود ، او در حقیقت دو قطبی می سازد بین سرمایه داری (روش فعلی اقتصاد جهان ) و جریان دموکراسی سازی و مشارکت همه مردم .

او برای بیان بهتر مطالب کتاب بارها از داستان های معروف مانند فاوست و همچنین فرانکشتاین کمک گرفته که باعث شده مطالب کتاب به شدت قابل فهم شود ، همچنین نوع خاص نگارش او و مخاطب قرار دادن دخترش ، نویسنده را همانند پدری دلسوز و مهربان برای خوانندگان کتاب نشان داده .مجموع این عوامل کتاب را به اثری ماندگار و خواندنی تبدیل کرده .

این کتاب اولین تجربه خوندن کتاب با موضوع اقتصاد برای من بود،اگه همه کتاب ها اینطور باشن آدم عاشق مباحثی میشه که فکر میکنه سختن و پیچیده.کتاب با پرسش های ساده و بنیادی پیش میره و هر بخش از فهرست، زیرمجموعه های هم داره.پاسخ به سوالات با مثال و رجوع به داستان ها و کتاب هایی مثل خوشه های خشم،فاوست وفرانکشتاین و فیلم های نظیر ماتریکس ادامه پیدا میکنه.کتاب دید جدیدی مخصوصا نسبت به بانک ها بهتون میده.
نویسنده کتاب اقتصاددان یونانی و مدتی وزیر اقتصاد یونان بوده.دلیلش رو هم برای نوشتن این کتاب این طور بیان میکنه که اقتصاد خیلی مهم تر از اونه که به اقتصاددان ها بسپریمش،پس باید جوانان ما درباره اش اطلاعات مفید و کاربردی داشته باشند.
کتاب درسال 2013 به یونانی نوشته شد و در 2017 به انگلیسی ترجمه شد.
دراخر بازم هنری میلر میگه:در پیشنهاد کتاب به یک دوست هرچه کمتر حرف بزنید بهتر است.منم دیگه صحبتو کوتاه میکنم.

کتاب «حرف‌هایی با دخترم درباره اقتصاد» اثر یانیس واروفاکیس، اقتصاددان و سیاستمدار یونانی، یک اثر غیر داستانی که با زبانی ساده و قابل فهم، مفاهیم پیچیده اقتصادی را برای مخاطبان جوان و بزرگسال توضیح می‌دهد. کتاب به صورت مکالمه‌ای بین پدر (واروفاکیس) و دخترش نوشته شده است و همین شیوه‌ی روایت، باعث جذابیت و در دسترس بودن آن برای خوانندگان می‌شود.

خیلی منو یاد کتاب « اقتصاد به زبان ساده» میندازه با این تفاوت که اون کتاب موضعش لیبرال بود و این کتاب سوسیال ( با ادبیاتی ساده اما متفاوت) هر دو کتاب زبان ساده ای دارند که نقطه قوت هر دو کتابه .پیشنهاد من اینه اگه مبتدی هستید هر دو این کتابها را با هم بخوانید تا با استدلالهای هر دو دیدگاه به طور یکسانی مواجه شوید.بنده پس از سر و کله زدنهای بسیار هنوز به نظر واحدی نرسیدم اما در نهایت فهمیدم در هر برهه تاریخی و در هر فرهنگ و کشوری یک‌ جور سیاست اقتصادی کارآمد است و نمیتوان نسخه جهان شمول برای کشورها و اقتصادشان پیچید ... اما کتاب
درحالی که کتاب «اقتصاد به زبان ساده» با این جمله شروع میشه :«درس اول اقتصاد کمیابی است چیزی در جهان نمیتوان یافت که فراوان باشد و نیاز همگان را برطرف کند » این کتاب کاملا موضعی عکس دارد و همان اول کارش را با به چالش کشیدن نابرابری آغاز میکند : «چرا انقدر نابرابری ؟ » کتاب از یک مثال شروع میکنه « چرا انگلیسی ها بودند که به استرالیا حمله کردند و نه برعکس؟» و میپرسه چرا بعضی کشورها فقیرتر هستند بعضی ثروتمندتر؟ میگه « نوشتار ، بدهی پول دولت همه از مازاد کشاورزی و در پاسخ به نیازهایی از این مازاد بوجود امد و از ان اقتصادها فناوریها و ارتش ها سربراوردند شرایط جغرافیایی اوراسیا طبیعت زمین و آب و هوا به این معنا بود که کشاورزی و مازاد و تمام انچه با ان امد با نیروی زیادی زمام امور را به دست گرفت و منجر به ظهور حکام دولتهایی شد که در راس ارتش هایی مجهز به فناوریهایی مثل تفنگ بودند با این حال در کشورهایی مثل استرالیا اوضاع جور دیگری بود مثلا بومیان استرالیایی هیچ وقت کمبود غذا نداشتند چون ۳-۴ میلیون نفر در هماهنگی نسبی با طبیعت زندگی میکردند در نتیجه هیچ دلیلی برای ابداع فناوری کشاورزی وجود نداشت تا برای انباشت مازاد یا در فرصت مقتضی به کار گرفته شود » و درباره اینکه چرا در سطح اجتماع برخی افراد فقیرترند برخی ثروتمندتر ؟ به همون ترتیب یعنی با « مزیت دسترسی به مازاد انباشته شده »و به این ترتیب نویسنده نابرابری را به چالش میکشد و به دخترش :) میگوید اینکه تو چیزی را داری یا نداری لزوما به شایستگی تو برای داشتن یا نداشتنش ربط ندارد
در فصل دوم چگونگی ایجاد جامعه بازار (در مقابل جامعه دارای بازار که همیشه از دیرباز وجود داشته ) را با مفهوم جهانی شدن تجارت و پس از آن انقلاب صنعتی توضیح میدهد و انرا سرزنش میکند : جهانی که در ان ارزش مبادله بر ارزش معنوی چیزها مقدم است و همین انرا میگرداند جهان مذمومیست ...
در فصل ۳ میگوید اقتصاد جوامع بازار بدون وجود مفهومی به اسم بدهی با سود ( یعنی همان ربای خودمون ) از کار می افتاد ودر فصل ۴ میگوید اگر این وام دادن توسط سیستم بانکداری به طمع سودش بی وقفه و افراط گونه تکرار شود با اختلال در بازچرخانی پول باعث فروپاشی اقتصاد میشود
در فصل ۵ میگوید بازار کار و بازار پول دو بازار ادیپی هستند به این معنا که وقتی گروهی خوش بین است خوش بینیشان خود تداوم بخش و خود تحقق بهش است و وقتی بدبین است بدبینی انها نیز خود را تداوم و تحقق میبخشد . بازار کار صرفا مبتنی بر ارزش مبادله کار نیست بلکه مبتنی بر خوش بینی و بدبینی افراد در مورد کلیت اقتصاد هم هست و درنتیجه پایین اوردن سراسری دستمزد میتواند منجر به عدم استخدام جدید یا حتی خانمه خدمت کارگران شود و همین استدلال را برای بازار پول به کار میبرد ( در حالی که در استدلال لیبرالها و طرفداران بازار آزاد اتفاقا برعکسه مثلا کاهش دستمزد یا کاهش نرخ بهره نتیجه ای عکس میدهد)
فصل ۶ : نویسنده میگوید اتوماسیون با جایگزین شدن کار انسان و پایین اوردن هزینه تولید باعث بیرون کشیدن عامل انسانی از تولید کالا شده و با کاهش قدرت خرید مردم باعث فروپاشی خودش میشود. نویسنده به جایش ایده هم راستا کردن منافع انسان با گسترش ماشینها را پیشنهاد میدهد به این شکل که بخشی از ماشینهای هر شرکت بدل به اموال همه شوند و درصدی از سود که به آن بخش میرسد به صندوق مشترکی بریزد که باید به صورت برابر بین همه پخش شود تا تاثیر مثبت بر تقاضا و قیمت داشته باشد « و اکر روزی برسد که فرایند تولید واقعا به شکل کامل به دست رباتها اداره شود و ما انسانها دیگر نیازی به کار کردن روی طراحی با تولید رباتهایی که رباتهای دیکر را میسازند نداشته باشیم ان وقت همه قیمتها و همه درامدها به تدریج کاهش می یابد تا اینکه در نهایت هر محصولی مثل هوایی میشود که تنفس میکنیم به قدری فراوان که هیچ کس نباید برای ان پولی بپردازد هر قدر هم که ارزشمند باشد انوقت و تنها در ان زمان است که میتوانیم مثل کاپیتان پیکارد در پیشتازان فضا لاف بزنیم که مردم دیکر درگیری وسواس گونه ای برای انباشت چیزها ندارند و ما گرسنگی احتیاج و نیاز به مالکیت را از بین برده ایم ما از کودکی خود درامده و بزرگ شده ایم »
۷-«در زمان بحران مالی ۲۰۰۸ شهروندان خشمگین جهان رویای نوع جدیدی از وجه رایج را در سر می پروراندند که سیاست زدایی و ملیت زدایی شده باشد و به دور از دسترس اصحاب زر و زور باشد که به دست مردم و برای مردم خلق شده باشد و نه بانکداران و نه دولت بتواند انرا دستکاری کند» یعنی :بیت کوین اما ایراد ان : «مقدار ثابت بیت کوین بحران اقتصادی را محتمل تر میکند به خاطر اثر ضدتورنی یا اثر انقباضی یعنی همچنان که کسب و کارها محصولات بیشتری تولید میکنند هر بیت کوین نسبتا کمیاب تر میشود بنابر این ارزش ان بیشتر و بیشتر میشود این یعنی قیمت هر ماشین و ابزاری که با بیت کوین ها سنجیده میشود حتی سریع تر از سرعتی سقوط میکند که اتوماسیون به بار میارد و این ممکن است در تمام سطوح رخ دهد :تنزل قیمتها . این فی نفسه و به خودی خود مسئله ای نیست اما به مشکل بزرگی تبدیل میشود اکر دستمزدها سریع تر از قیمتها نزول کند به این معنی که کارگران فقط بتوانند مقدار معدودی از محصولات متنوع را بخرند این اثر ضریب بی ثبات کننده ای را به معیارهای بیش از حد انعطاف پذیر بانکها می افزاید و ساده تر جرقه فروپاشی اقتصادی را میزند دومین مشکل عدم امکان افزایش نقدینگی با عرضه پول است که واکنش زنجیره ای ناتوانی در پرداخت بدهی همگان را به رکودی سریع می کشاند»
در فصل ۸ هم میگوید محیط زیست در معرض خطر این مدل اقتصاد ماست و برخلاف پیشنهاد بسیاری از اقتصاددانان بازاری کردن ان راه حل نیست
نویسنده میخواهد بگوید تمام اینها را (نابرابری / مفهوم جامعه بازار /مفهوم بدهی و سود / چگونگی کارکرد بازار کار و بازار پول و اتوماسیون و... نباید به عنوان اصول پذیرفت و نباید نسبت به آنها همان موضعی را داشته باشیم که مثلا نسبت به یک قانون فیزیک داریم! نویسنده میگوید هرچیزی نهایتا باید در خدمت همه انسانها و نه معدودی از انها و در خدمت محیط زیست باشد اینکه چقدر چنین چیزی شدنیست ...؟

4.5 stars, rounded up to 5 simply because of how much I enjoyed it.

This is a brilliant ABC of economics, in particular the Marxist critique of capitalism. I didn't learn all that much (mainly I got some ideas for how to Talk To My Son About the Economy), but Varoufakis is such a great storyteller, and he brings economic concepts to life in a very powerful way. An excellent primer, and goes well with the less Marxist but very useful Economics: The User's Guide. Varoufakis does a really great job reclaiming the concept of democracy for socialism, pointing out that the enormous disparities in wealth in market societies produce corresponding disparities in access to decision making.

I knew it was coming and therefore wasn't terribly disappointed by it, but the weakness of the book is its conclusion. We're shown all the gnarly contradictions of capitalism, only to be led to a sort of radical Keynesianism brought about via parliamentary elections. This gives Varoufakis a get-out clause when it comes to making a serious analysis of actually (or formerly) existing socialism in the USSR, China, Vietnam, Cuba, Korea and Eastern Europe; and it tends to ignore the experiences of those dozens of countries, primarily in the Global South, that have sought precisely such a path as Varoufakis outlines, only to have their dreams shattered at the hands of the CIA. Chile, Indonesia, Congo, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Philippines and Brazil all come to mind (Killing Hope: U.S. Military and C.I.A. Interventions Since World War II and The Jakarta Method: Washington's Anticommunist Crusade and the Mass Murder Program that Shaped Our World are good places to start on this topic).

As such, I think 'Talking to My Daughter About the Economy' suffers from a certain eurocentrism. Nonetheless, a very useful book and I plan to read more by the author.

من عادة كتب الاقتصاد أن تكون باردة وجافة و"ثقيلة دم" وهذه الأمور أعدك أنك لن تجدها في هذا الكتاب.
الكتاب جميل وسهل ولطيف، يحكي فيه المؤلف - وهو الوزير المتخصص بالشؤون المالية والأستاذ في علم الاقتصاد - عرض موجز وسريع لرحلة المال، وكيف اخترعت الأسواق، ولماذا هناك تفاوت طبقي كبير بين الأغنياء والفقراء.
8 فصول، أحببت منها الفصل الخاص بالدَين، والفصل قبل الأخير المتعلق بوهم الفصل بين المال والسياسة، والتفريق بين القيمة والسلعة كان ممتازاً ووضّح فيه الفرق بين الأصول والمتحركات.
أنصح به كمدخل لفهم صيرورة الاقتصاد مع أمثلة طريفة وأسلوب عرض مميز.

گاهی برای درک مفاهیم پیچیده، لازم نیست سراغ نمودارها و فرمول‌های سخت رفت. کافی‌ست پدری باشد، دختری، و گفت‌وگویی گرم میان آن دو. واروفاکیس همین مسیر را انتخاب کرده تا یکی از دشوارترین حوزه‌های فهم، یعنی اقتصاد، را به ساده‌ترین شکل ممکن روایت کند. کتابش نه رساله‌ای دانشگاهی‌ست، نه برنامه‌ای سیاسی. بیشتر شبیه نامه‌ای‌ست که پدری برای دخترش نوشته، با صداقتی انسانی و لحنی صمیمی، اما نه بی‌ طرف.

او از ابتدایی‌ترین پرسش‌ها شروع می‌کند: چرا نابرابری؟ چرا بدهی؟ بانک‌ها دقیقاً چه می‌کنند؟ چرا پول این‌قدر مهم است؟ چرا به‌نظر می‌رسد همه‌چیز، حتی رؤیاها، کالا شده‌اند؟ و به جای این‌که پاسخش را در زبان خشک اقتصاددانان سنتی بدهد، سراغ اسطوره‌ها، تاریخ، و قصه‌ها می‌رود. پرسشگری‌اش از سقراط می‌آید و انتقادهایش از کارل مارکس و جان مینارد کینز تغذیه می‌شود. اما نه مارکسیست است، نه کینزیِ محض؛ بیشتر یک روشنفکر چپ‌گرای مستقل است که از سرمایه‌داری افسارگسیخته بیزار است اما آن را حذف‌ناپذیر می‌داند.

او اقتصاد را نه علمی خنثی، بلکه صحنه‌ای اخلاقی و سیاسی می‌بیند. صحنه‌ای که در آن، ثروت و فقر، پیروزی و شکست، نه فقط حاصل تصمیمات فردی، بلکه نتیجهٔ ساختارهایی‌ست که مردم را به نحوی نابرابر در خود جای می‌دهند. در روایت او، بانک‌ها نه معبد سرمایه‌گذاری بلکه کارگاه‌های جادویی‌اند که پول را از هیچ می‌سازند و در عین حال، بدهی را به زنجیری برای کنترل انسان‌ها بدل می‌کنند. او می‌نویسد که پول، یک قرارداد اجتماعی‌ست و وقتی سیاست از پول جدا می‌شود، فاجعه آغاز می‌شود.

اما این کتاب، با همه سادگی و روشنی‌اش، بی‌نقص نیست. گاه چنان در تلاش برای ساده‌گویی است که پیچیدگی‌های بنیادین علم اقتصاد را قربانی روایت می‌کند. رابطه بدهی و سود، کارکرد واقعی بانک‌ها، نقش فناوری یا حتی پیدایش بازارها، در بستر تاریخی و تئوریک بسیار غنی‌تری قابل بحث‌اند که کتاب تنها گوشه‌ای از آن‌ها را روشن می‌کند.

از سوی دیگر، واروفاکیس از منظر چپ به موضوع نگاه می‌کند، اما این نگاه گاه یک‌سویه و اخلاقی است. او سرمایه‌داری را نقد می‌کند، اما درباره شکست‌های تاریخی اقتصادهای دولتی سکوت می‌کند. او قدرت و خشونت سیستم‌های بازار را افشا می‌کند، اما گاه از نمایش خشونت‌های پنهان ایدئولوژی‌های رقیب می‌گذرد. در نتیجه، مخاطب ممکن است با جهانی خاکستری روبه‌رو نشود، بلکه با دو قطب روشن و تاریک مواجه شود: سرمایه‌داری فاسد در برابر انسان‌گرایی ایده‌آل. چنین تقابلی اگرچه از لحاظ عاطفی جذاب است، اما از نظر تحلیلی جای نقد دارد.

همچنین، کتاب در جای‌جای خود از سیاست حرف می‌زند، اما سیاست را به اخلاق تقلیل می‌دهد. گویی همه چیز با صداقت، گفتگو، و نیت خوب حل‌شدنی‌ست. در حالی که عرصهٔ واقعی سیاست، عرصه منافع، قدرت، رقابت و گاهی بی‌رحمی است. شاید برای دخترش، این تصویر ملایم‌تر و امیدبخش‌تر باشد، اما خواننده بالغ‌تر می‌داند که تصویر واقعی اقتصاد، تیره‌تر و چندلایه‌تر است.

نکتهٔ دیگر، اروپامحور بودن کتاب است. واروفاکیس از تجربه زیسته‌اش در یونان و اتحادیه اروپا می‌گوید، اما به جهان سوم، استعمار اقتصادی، یا نابرابری ساختاری در خاورمیانه و آفریقا چندان نمی‌پردازد. این غیبت، هرچند توجیه‌پذیر، اما خواننده‌ای از ایران یا لبنان یا هند را مجبور می‌کند تا خودش پیوندها را بسازد و زخم‌ها را در روایت او پیدا کند.

با این همه، «حرف‌هایی با دخترم درباره اقتصاد» کتابی‌ست که باید خواند، نه برای این‌که کامل است، بلکه برای این‌که شروع خوبی‌ست؛ برای این‌که یادمان می‌آورد اقتصاد درباره عدد و نمودار نیست، بلکه درباره زندگی مردم است؛ درباره آن‌که چرا کسی نان ندارد، کسی میلیون‌ها دلار جابه‌جا می‌کند و کسی دیگر خوابش نمی‌برد چون قسط عقب افتاده دارد.

واروفاکیس می‌خواهد دخترش بداند که در جهانی که همه‌چیز قابل خریدوفروش شده، باید از حقیقت مراقبت کرد. باید پرسید، باید شک کرد، و باید دانست که نابرابری نه تقدیر است، نه طبیعت؛ بلکه تصمیمی‌ست که پشت درهای بسته گرفته شده. و این شاید مهم‌ترین درسی باشد که از پدری به دختری می‌رسد.

Yanis Varoufakis, the cheeky former Greek minister of finance and a saavy economics professor, delivers an explanatory book on modern capitalism for the non-academic, using a variety of examples from European history, Greek mythology, and pop culture to make his points.

Varoufakis believes that understanding economics is key to a truly well-functioning democracy. Yet, the jargon-filled academic field of economics obscures important ideas in strange language and uses inane examples that make it difficult for non-economists to understand. This (willful?) opacity then makes it easier for the people who do speak the lingo to pull a fast one on the rest of us. His goal with this book is to demystify a number of the more important economic topics of the time.

What's particularly interesting about Talking to My Daughter is the longer historical range/lens that Varoufakis uses to explain economic phenomenon, and its grounding in European / Greek perspective. Whether he's using the myth of Oedipus Rex to illuminate how the power of prophecy can markets to self-sabotage, or the story of Faustus selling his soul to Mephistopheles to explain the rise in contract-based debt, it is entertaining. Rarely will you find a discussion of economic phenomenon using a blend of stories from feudal Europe and Greek mythology from an American scholar; in fact, rarely do American universities teach the historical basis of economics at all, except for Smith's invisible hand.

Overall, Talking to My Daughter About the Economy is a provocative alternative look at of many of the current weaknesses and threats posed by the global economic system that helps put it in global historical context. Read my longer review of the book here.

Probably one of the best books ever written about the economy and the history of Capitalism (and to think that he finished writing it in only 9 days), the difference being that Varoufakis is not afraid to demystify and simplify his vocation whereas his colleagues have a egotistical tendency to make economic concepts sound more complicated than they actually are to attract more research funding. This is an absolute must read for every young person today, to understand what kind of a world we will inherit and what to do with our inheritance.

با داستان ها و مثال هایی که نویسنده میگفت درک مطلب رو خیلی اسونتر میکرد (البته باز هم برای من کمی سخت بود و نیاز به تمرکز داشتم برا خوندن کتاب)

"وقتي به دنيا آمدي نام تو سنيا Xenia برايم خيلي جذاب بود، چون ريشه آن كلمه يوناني xenos به معني غريبه يا خارجي بر ميگردد كه به مهرباني با غريبه ها ترجمه مي شود . جذابيت اين نام تا حدي ناشي از اين باور من بود كه بهترين راه ديدن كشور خودت ،جامعه خودت ،ديدن آن از چشم يك خارجي يك بيگانه است .سعي كن به صورت ذهني به جاهاي خيلي دور سفر كني– نه لزومن براي حركت دادن جهانت –كه فكر كن چقدر ميتواند باشكوه باشد .براي ديدن واضح همان چيزي كه هست انجام اين كار به تو اين فرصت را خواهد داد تا آزادي ات را حفظ كني و اگر بخواهي بزرگ كه شدي انساني آزاد بماني و راه خودت را در اين جهان پيدا كني ضروري ست كه نوعي آزادي ناياب اما حياتي را در خود بپروراني آزادي برآمده از اين دانش كه اقتصاد چگونه كار مي كند و از توان پاسخ به اين پرسش ميليارددلاري كه : "جلو چشمت و در جاي ديگر آدم ها چه بر سر هم مي آورند؟ "
پس ديگر بس است به اندازه كافي اذيت شدي چون ما با هم يك دور كامل زديم و به اين پرسش بازگشتيم كه "چرا بعضي خيلي دارند اما باقي خيلي كم "شايد بگويي وقت تلف كرده ام . من در عوض فقط اين شعر مورد علاقه ام را دارم:

بعد من خواسته باشم كه براي ستاره ها شمع روشن كنم كه اگر زبانم لال به وقت خاموشي حمله ي عصبي بهشون دست داد اگر زبانم لال به وقت جراحت دچار افت هموگلوبين شدند زبانم لال به وقت اندوه تنها شدند .من چشمهام ببينه كه سر سوزن رو در شريان اصلي فرو كنم و دردشون نگيره .مي بيني ؟اون گوشه يك خانوم محترمي دست به سينه و چهار زانو نشسته و داره يك درميان با خودش و يك درخت پير صحبت مي كنه ، نامبرده ساعت هاست كه سايه ي قلب بزرگي رو در گرافي منتج به روشنايي آسمون مشاهده كرده اما از تشخيص عاجزه. از مطرح كردن علل آب رفتن سايز كليه ها و بهبودي كودكان گونه سرخ عاجزه ،از انتخاب پاي مصنوعي متناسب با اون زائده ي غمگين تن اون گربه ي سه پا. از پيوند رنگ سبز به برگهاي پژمرده اون اركيده ي خجالتي عاجزه، از درمان تب مديترانه اي و بدخيمي هاي خاور ميانه اي و بيرون روي هاي كانتري هاي قدر قدرت و انتخاب بين بدتر و بدترين عاجزه .عاجزه عاجزه از اعمال محدوديت مصرف سديم در دختركان باردار معصوم ،زيبا ،فقير ،غمگين و شايد اهل افغانستاني كه فشار خونشون مدت هاست از محدوده نرمال عبور كرده. از انتخاب ميان بدتر و بدترين عاجزه مي دونم خودم خوشم اومده انگار و علاقه به تكرار بي سرانجامش داشتم( لطفن اون فتحه لعنتي رو از پيشاني ت تكرار خط بزنيد ). عاجزه از ترميم زخم هاي دست محمد عليرضا روزبه كه هر روز بيشتر و بيشتر ميشن از پس مانده هاي نوك تيز و فضولات عفوني سطل هاي زباله .اه اصلن نميخوام وارد اين بازي كثيف بشم و براي رسيدن شقايق و گودرز به هم آستين بالا بزنم و عجز شريف رو به مسخره ترين شكل ممكن دستمايه اهداف شومم قرار بدم و حس ترحم برانگيزم .عجز ما ترحم بر نيانگيزه به لحظه لحظه هاي خاموشي ستاره هاي نفيس سوگند و لطفن اگر متوجه وخامت اوضاع هستيد با هيچ كجاي جهان تماس نگيريد اگرچه حالا خيلي دير شده خيلي دير شده دير دير دير دير دير اما با هيچ كجاي اين جهان دو زاري و نا امن و بي در و پيكر تماس نگيريد بگذاريد تنها و در سكوت، زمانه به دست خويشتن طي كنيم بالاخره ما هم خداي مهربوني داريم .داريم داريم داريم . تغيير مسير اشك ها گواه اين وجوده و من خسته ام از اثباتش براي مردم براي همين گاهي با درخت ها و گربه هه و اركيده هه همراه ميشم براي تمرين سجده . مي دونيد چي ميگم؟ (خودم مي دونم )

سوال: چرا بعضي خيلي دارند و باقي خيلي كم؟
جواب :قلب من در بدو تپيدن در اين جهان به تمامي سياه شده و از پاسخ به اين پرسش طفره رفته و خواهد رفت با نپوشيدن نخراميدن نشنيدن نديدن ...هيئت نور رو خدشه دار كردم ، شما هم . خدشه دار كرده ايم .اين مرحله براي نوازش گونه هاي سرخ نيست اينجا بايد طولاني مدت خيلي خيلي طولاني مدت ايستاد و به ستاره ها خون تزريق كرد (گروه خوني مطابقت داده شده با قلب هاي از بدو تولد سرخ) زنده مي مانند ،نسل نور به آسمان سرمه اي مهاجرت خواهند كرد و ما اينجا مي ميرم. فداي سر ستاره ها.

Yanis Varoufakis, economics professor and former finance minister of Greece, subscribes to a simple view that I share: if you can’t teach your subject to kids, you’re not such a good teacher….. (OK, string theorists might get a let off on that one, but only maybe). Now, for those of us who teach history, sociology, cultural studies and the like it might seem that we’re getting off easily in comparison to Varoufakis, who teaches economics. Towards the end of the engaging and highly accessible history of capitalism he turns his focus on those who see economics as a science, whose complex economic models obscure and obfuscate the everyday experience of those of who live with their edicts, and the window-dressing of politicians who implement their plans and advice – and he is in no way forgiving of those who make his/their area of expertise one of untrammelled confusion.

Varoufakis teaches by story-telling and cutting through the density of much that passes for economic theory to find everyday events, situation and scenarios that can help explain the points he making about money, markets, power, work & labour and global (or, rather glocal) ecosystems. In keeping with Syriza, the party for whom he became finance minister, his history is largely a Marxist one constrained by the historiographical insights of Karl Polyani while his economics is, for the most part, Keynsian, but what we might see as small-state Keynsian in that he sees a world that is predominantly democratic where decision-making rests on cooperative community approaches with a democratic state (although he doesn’t suggest the relationship between these two levels, and that’s not the point of the book). In that sense, he is working in a framework provided by fairly orthodox heterodox economics (if that’s not an oxymoron).

As orthodoxically heterodox, Varoufakis is in good company and although there is quite a lot about that outlines economic approaches that reject the dominant neo-liberal leave-it-to-the-market style, there is little I have seen that is this accessible and this engaging; he seems to have read his intended audience well. Of course, that means there are many who will find fault – for not being sufficiently Marxist or Keynsian or whatever the preferred style is, for being over-reliant on game theory or underplaying the environmental aspects of capitalism’s development and order or countless other problems. Then there are those who will find fault with his ‘oversimplification’ of economics or his politicisation of the ‘market’. One of the many things I have learned as a teacher, alongside the need for humility, is that there are many ways to tell the same story or make the same point and our readers/students/pupils need to hear several different forms to get it: we hear and read differently, and diversity in writers’/teachers’ voices is essential.

To my mind, Varoufakis has achieved something more of us should aim for; demystifying a set of social relations more often than not presented in complex ways that limit our ability to be involved in debates about and the politics of those relations. When that limitation is imposed on something as essential as ‘the economy’ it is profoundly undemocratic and dangerous. If this invigorating economics ‘text’ demystifies those relations and enhances our economic literacy, which I am convinced it must, Varoufakis has done us all a favour.

If you’re concerned that there is an economic discussion going on around you and want to get to understand the underpinning system – set aside the frankly magical and mystifying language of economic management and go for politics and systems analysis. This is good place to start – but beware it will encourage you to find more demanding texts, and so it should! I would have liked a suggestion for further reading – but Naomi Klein’s No is Not Enough is a good start.

Before he launched Progressive International with Bernie Sanders in 2018, before he wrote books on the world's response to the 2008 financial crisis, before he was Greece's Finance Minister in 2015 during high-stakes negotiations between Greece and the EU on how to cope with Greece's economic and budgetary collapse, Yanis Varoufakis wrote a book (in Greek) explaining economics to adolescents (such as his daughter). It was subsequently translated into many other languages, but not into English until 2017.

His daughter was, I think, around 11 years old at the time he wrote this book, although I cannot find that detail just now so I might be slightly off. In any case, he was clearly writing at someone who was old enough to talk to about complex issues like how finance works, but not so old as to already have done a lot of reading on that. The book is, of course, a good book for adults to read as well, largely because most of us have not done that much reading about how finance works either.

More importantly, much of what we have read about how finance works, is not true. In some cases it was never true, but more importantly, finance today does not work the same as it did 100-200 years ago. Most of the money in our economy, today, has no physical existence, not even as paper. Most of the government debt, is not for the purpose of the government being able to spend more (it is for financial institutions such as banks to be able to buy a reliable bond that is highly liquid, and absolutely safe).

Not everything in Varoufakis' analysis is correct, in my opinion. He seems entirely too confident in the ability of democracy to rein in government excesses on behalf of the wealthy and well-connected, and therefore not particularly worried about government accumulating more and more power. It also seems clear to me that, the larger the polity, the more remote its leaders are from any given citizen (and the closer they are to the very wealthy). Thus, the government of Greece is much closer to caring about the welfare of ordinary Greeks, than the EU, which begs the question of whether it is a good idea for Greece to have committed their economic welfare into the hands of a bunch of non-Greeks in Brussels.

But, while his view of the world and how it could/should work may not be any better than the neo-liberal ideology which reigned from the end of the Cold War until 2008, it is at least a different view, and he is at his best when he is puncturing that neo-liberal ideology by pointing out the many ways in which the reality does not match the theory.

I have a 13-year old daughter; it had occurred to me when I began reading this book that I might wish to give it to her when I was done. If she had the slightest bit of interest in economics, I probably would. In the meantime, I think reading it myself has stimulated a lot of fresh thinking about how our economy works, and how it ought to work instead. Any book that does that is worth reading.

نقدی بسیار مؤثر و قدرتمند بر نظام اقتصادی سرمایه داری یا آنطور که نویسنده ترجیح میده بگه، «جامعۀ بازار». نویسنده میاد و از ابتدا فرق قائل میشه بین ارزش مبادله و ارزش تجربی. بنیان جامعۀ بازار، ارزش مبادله س، و بنابراین هرچیزی که ارزش مبادله یا قابلیت تبدیل شدن به پول رو نداشته باشه و وارد چرخۀ ایجاد سود نشه، بهتره که نباشه. و به همین دلیله که نابود شدن محیط زیست سود و ارزش مبادلۀ بیشتری داره در قیاس با حفظ اون که فقط ارزش تجربی داره. به همین دلیله که سرمایه داری برابره با ثروتمند تر کردن ثروتمندان و فقیر تر کردن فقرا، زیرا منطق چنین نظامی کالایی کردن مطلقاً همه چیزه.

و راه حلی که نویسنده ارائه میده برای من به غایت جذابه: اینکه ابزارها و ماشین آلات اصلی تولید تحت مالکیت اجتماعی و دموکراتیک در بیان، سود حاصل از تولید و کار توزیع جمعی بشه، و حداقلی از نظارت دموکراتیک، در قالب دولت های دموکراتیک، بر روابط اقتصادی حکمفرما بشه.

به طور کلی کتاب بسیار جذابی است، به خصوص اگر کسی مایل باشه نقد اندکی سوسیالیستی، ولی در کل غیر چپ، بر نظام سرمایه داری ببینه.

I'm surprised that people rated the book with 2 stars! But then again people who like and profit from Capitalism obviously won't like this book. The book is brilliantly written.
