Cordially Invited: A seasonal guide to hosting any occasion and making a memory out of every day

Rate this book
For as long as Zoe Sugg can remember she has loved welcoming friends & family into her home, whether it's to celebrate someone else's big day or just being with friends, there is nothing she enjoys more than putting her energy into making any occasion special.

In Zoe's eyes the best thing about getting people together is there really is no right or wrong way: maybe you want to plan a throw-everything-at-it shindig, or simply make a special effort for one guest. Mostly it's about how people feel when they're in your company. How the smallest of gatherings can feel momentous, and the biggest of parties can feel intimate.

Over the years Zoe has shared glimpses of this side to her in her videos, with millions of viewers taking daily inspiration from her life. In Cordially Invited she shares her best and never seen before ideas in print. Divided into seasons, and woven through with Zoe's own stories and memories, this book reveals her favourite events - big or small - throughout the year and how to celebrate them in style.

From practical ideas for how to feed your guests and hacks for unexpected get-togethers to simple but impressive DIYs and those personal touches people will remember, Cordially Invited is Zoe's blueprint for making an event and a memory out of each day.

My friend received this book as a “gift" she didn’t want, so you can bet I was extremely excited to read it. We poured ourselves a few glasses of wine and dug into THE instructional guide of our time.

First, do you need instructions to take walks? Because you're going to learn how to... twice. That's right, this book has instructions for taking a spring AND fall walk. This is information we all truly need.

As I was thumbing through though, the thing that struck me the most was that about fourteen different bloggers should probably be suing to get a part of this book, because there are verbatim crafts directly from Pinterest, several times. The Halloween section in particular seemed to be the part where the author just gave up and copy pasted. At least she took her own pictures though.

Let’s talk about the garlands - did you know the only thing your party needs to be a success is a garland? Paper bunnies on a string, second grade paper rings, all the obvious things that you wouldn't think someone could stretch into a four page instructional guide with a dozen accompanying pictures to pad the length, but no, somehow, the author found a way to do it.

Did you guys know you should consider your budget before throwing a party? The amount of guests? Did you know you should send thank you cards to people who invite you to their houses, or that you should bring a present? Did you know that to be a good guest, you shouldn't arrive too early or stay too late? Truly, no one has ever thought of theses things before.

Oh, did you need some ideas for games? She's got you covered. No, not instructions for fun games, just lists of games you could play. She divides it up by the type of parties you're having (dinner party games, small friend groups, big parties) but it's just a list. You could google it and save yourself some money.

And now for some crafts. You can make a chalkboard sign... by taking a chalkboard and writing on it with a chalk marker. Get a black Halloween pumpkin with gold dots... by painting a pumpkin black and then putting gold dots on it. You can plant a herb garden... by buying pots and herbs from the grocery store and then putting the herbs IN THE POTS. It's revolutionary.

This book is the most obvious thing I have ever read. There are no meaningful tips, or helpful tricks - it's all the basics you could learn from speaking to a person who has thrown a party. I cannot stress this enough - it's not like you're getting expert level tips. The section about having a "Cereal Party" in particular is among the worst ideas I have ever seen, and the guide is essentially just a list of things you could eat for breakfast. Seriously, she lists a bunch of cereals, fruits, seeds, and milks you could have. It read like a grocery store aisle. Party, right?

After going through three quarters of the book, I flipped back to the cover. Zoe Sugg. That name seemed so familiar. So I googled, and remembered that she's a Youtuber - not only that, but the one that was embroiled in a ghost writing scandal a few years ago, where she tricked her young fans into buying a book loosely based on her life, that she claimed to write, and didn't. In a way, Cordially Invited feels like a direct response to this - I can almost hear her, pacing around her house, thinking "I can't write a book, they say - ha! I'll show them... I'll write about something I know - like being a Youtuber! Oh wait, I tried that already, and it was so bad, they had to hire someone to do it in my name. Well... how about non-fiction?"

Now, onto what I did like. The design is beautiful - I have to hand it to Zoe Sugg, she knows how to take a pretty picture, even if they've already been used in thumbnails for her videos and blog, but that's splitting hairs. I guess I'm of the opinion that if I'm spending money on a thing, I'd prefer if it be dedicated to the project, but that's just me. The colours are nice, the typography is clean, and it's a beautiful looking book. But that's all it is - beautiful *looking.*

TLDR: Overall, I would suggest that you make a Pinterest account for free, rather than spend your money on this book, unless you are truly clueless and need your hand held through the smallest of tasks. But it is fun to read with a friend and a glass of pinot.

I haven't read this book.

I haven't purchased this book.

I'm going to tell you why.

I think what she tried to do was have a book targeted at an older audience rather than her usual demographic. I get that. The thing, however, is that roughly 80% of her audience is under the age of fifteen. Home girl really is out here writing a book about how to be a homemaker for kids who are more worried about their SAT scores.

From what I gather, save yourself the time and money. If you want the recipes in this book, just go check out her YouTube channel. If you want to do any of the crafts, go on pinterest.

(This video is basically this review but if I actually bought the book)

Do I hate Zoe? No, not at all. Do I think her yes men got a lil money hungry? Very much so.

Wow what a disappointment, basically just being told how queen zoe thinks you should behave in someone's house, told how to make simple "recipes" which have been posted 5 thousand times on Pinterest already. And how to make some paper decorations I used to make when I was 6 😦 to then be told how to throw a "cereal party" and how to "make a den" so basically being told how to put some cereal in a bowl with some fruit and how to put some sheets up.. Again been aware of how to do these things since I was 6. Just appears to me that zoe is very money hungry and will do anything to expllot and get money out of her young fans which I already knew due to the over priced advent calendar she brought out last year 😱 stop writing books zoe, well I say writing but I'm dubious as to if she even bothered writing this one herself :/

I love Zoë and was excited to get this. I was very disappointed. The photos are lovely and the book is aesthetically pleasing, but it lacks depth and real insight - I didn’t want loads and loads of recipes, but that was what I got. Not at all what I expected. Still I enjoy flicking through it.

I'm sorry this is perhaps the worst 'book' I have ever read. Can I even say read? I just looked at page filler photos and basic, and I mean very basic recipes and crafts to try. Dont waste your money on this money hungry youtuber.

This book is so very, very Zoe. It is well-structured, prettily designed and the contents are every bit what you’d expect from a book by a lifestyle blogger. “Cordially Invited” consists of four parts: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. All of them contain a general introduction to the season they focus on, as well as guides to certain parties, recipes, DIYs, and more.
Everyone has been commenting on how beautiful this book is and I will gladly agree. The design (in terms of backgrounds, fonts etc.) is very simplistic, contrasting the pictures, which are very aesthetically pleasing, but always seem pretty… busy. I also love how basically everything is accompanied by at least one photograph.
The quality is great as well. The pages are thick and the paper feels like it is high quality. The photographs are well (and obviously professionally) done. I am not a big fan of the cover, but that’s – of course – a matter of taste.
What isn’t really a matter of taste is a certain complaint that I’ve seen quite often. “Cordially Invited” is full of great, cute, creative ideas, but many of them are not necessarily useful to the target audience. Now, I am well aware that Zoe’s audience grows (older) with her and that this book was not targeted at younger teens. However, I am a (young) adult and part of the very demographic that was meant to buy the book. Yet, I find that many of the tips are not as useful as they might seem. As other people have pointed out, Zoe spends quite a bit of time stating the obvious (or re-using recipes she’s already shared on her channel). Another chunk of the book is about stuff that I will not be able to recreate because of different reasons. Many of the recipes, for instance, require ingredients that I do not typically buy, either because they are too expensive (I’m a student, alright?) or because you only need a really small amount and I would never end up using the rest of it. Especially the chapter about winter contains lots of ideas that are (from a financial point of view) no option for many readers. I don’t want to really bash Zoe and her book for this, though. Why? Because the book is basically a written form of both of Zoe’s YouTube channels. She throws parties for lots of people. She has a huge house and lots of money to spend because YouTube made her rich. The dimensions she can allow herself to think in are just very different from what I can afford. Sure, she tries to be relatable (and to a certain extend she is), but you have to keep in mind she’s not an average twenty-something-year-old. I knew that when I got the book, and so did all of you.
All in all, “Cordially Invited” was what I expected it to be. I wanted a seasonal guide with a few bits and pieces that would inspire me – and that is indeed what I got. I am sure that I will get it out at the beginning of each season to help me get in the mood for the months to come. I’ll have to say, though, that I would not have payed the price of £20 that it usually costs. I was lucky to get in on amazon (UK!) when they had it for £10 to celebrate the release (which they still do today, 12. Oct. 2018) and I also had a voucher, so I ended up paying only £3 for it. Obviously, I could not not get it. I did say before that the quality is very nice. Moreover, the book has about 250 pages, which is actually decent, and I’ve seen Zoe work on it in her vlogs. Therefore, I know that she put a lot of time, effort, and love into the creation of “Cordially Invited”. However, I also said that I am a broke college student, and you’ll rarely see us buy books for £20.

I've been a Zoella fan for a couple of years now, and I love her as a Youtube personality, and that is why I found myself picking up the book on the shelf reading the familiar name. I flipped through and regretfully was becoming more and more upset at the contents within. Really Zoe? How to make CEREAL and SANDWICHES? It looks like she took the simplest ideas off of Pinterest, and slapped them in the book. But don't worry, there is some creative Zoe in there, that you can see for FREE on her youtube channel since she recycled the ideas. Granted, it's really pretty, and if you want to use it for decoration on a coffee table then, by all means, cuz that's all it's good for. In conclusion, if you're able to READ THIS, I hope you also know how to WALK which she gives a nice how-to, TWICE IN THE BOOK. I can't.

Aesthetic, creative content and idea-sparking pages. I’ve always wanted to be the perfect hostess and live in a Texas-sized house surrounded by homemade canapés. That’s the dream, right? I felt this book shoved me a little bit closer to making that a reality. Now all I need is a Texas-sized lottery win too. Like Zoe, I adore doing everything to excess. And I’ll support her in all her achievements.

I adore this book. It's so aesthetically pleasing, the recipes are brilliant and the way Zoe writes about hosting and decorating makes me want to hold gatherings with friends and family more often. There are so many crafts, recipes and ideas that I want to try out. I also reviewed Cordially Invited on my blog here: https://janaybrazier.blogspot.com/201...

Not for Me

I know there has been a lot of hate surrounding this book but I did enjoy Zoella videos as a teen and I wanted to read her new book due to being a Girl Online fan when the series was first released.

Let's start with the positives: the pictures are beautiful, the recipes are helpful, some of the ideas are cute and I like her personal experience tidbits.

On to the negatives; the lists. The lists suggest that us readers aren't intelligent enough to understand that blackberries and blueberries are...berries. I also disliked the pages that ramble with "a tip is that you should remember to have a spare charger for a friend". I had to skim several pages because her writing style wore me out. Way too wordy, frankly uninteresting and I believe she might have run out of ideas because she tells us how to take a walk IN EVERY SECTION of the book! I also do not like the lists that advertise things the average reader associates with each holiday.

I am not a hater and I really appreciated the good parts of this book although I was bored and felt lack luster 44% of the time.

You are a unique, beautiful, artistic woman. But please don't keep writing books without your editorial consultant!

There is nothing original about this book. It’s overpriced for its content. The content itself is infuriating & borderline stupid. I’m disappointed.

Over the years I've enjoyed watching Zoe's main Youtube channel and vlogging channel and loved watching her create great events and dinners for her friends and family as well as decorating her home and making fantastic gifts. Zoe has an amazing eye for style and a creative streak that comes across in all her beauty and homeware lines, her videos and now her new book, Cordially Invited. This is her first non-fiction and lifestyle book that will guide you through many different types of events and get togethers for a range of people. Zoe also gives helpful tips and ideas to her readers on how to make people feel entirely at ease and comfortable at any event or gathering.

I loved the way this book covered the four seasons of a year and the holidays in between like Easter and Christmas so it was like you could read through and prepare for the whole year. One of my favourite parts of this book too was the Pup Party section that included pupcakes because even though I don't have a dog I have plenty of friends with puppies that I would love to bake for! The whole Halloween section was so cosy too and it really put me in a DIY mood with Halloween only being a few weeks away now! I loved the look of the decorations and all of the recipes were super simple but also so adorable like the chocolate skeleton biscuits and ghost meringue.

I was also impressed to find that it not only discussed great ideas but this book also had a fantastic amount of recipes, DIY projects and even group games and activities for different events. Cordially Invited can be your one and only for all your events, gatherings and parties with everything you could need inside this one book with a beautiful cover and amazing photos to go along with it. I am so thrilled to have this book in my collection now and I know I will get so much use from it year round.

(Thank you to Hachette Australia for sending a copy of this book for review. Cordially Invited is now out in stores and online!)

I've seen a few bad reviews of this book but I really loved it. Being someone who is also really into all things home and organising things, this book was right up my street. The pictures are pretty and I like the recipes and other ideas. I also enjoyed the little tips she put in throughout. The entire book is, to me, very aesthetically pleasing and I would give it a high rating as I feel Zoe put a lot of effort into it which you can really see. I guess it all comes down to personal preference but for me, this book is really good.

I used to be a fan of Zoe's and got this book last year when I still followed her actively. Finished it now when I don't even really care about her content but I this book... this I enjoyed. I loved hearing about different occations you can celebrate and the hosting tips both Zoe and her mom have written in the book were fun and helpful. Now I know how to make even the smallest gatherings and sleepover just a tiny bit more special and better. The Autumn section was BY FAR my favorite. Photos in this book really really stunning. Cordially Invited is a beautiful coffee table book!

If I could honestly give any book a huge DO NOT BUY sign it would be this book. I am a huge fan of Zoe, I like her content and she's very relatable even though I live in totally different country. But when I heard about this book, at first I thought it would include special recipes or unique things she does off camera. There was not a single thing that was unique at all about her crafts or recipes. It's was bordaline embrassing because of the obvious instructions and tacky designs. How to make mashed potatoes or a million buntings?! What a waste of money. Its now selling for 10pounds but why would you buy that when you could get a Jamie Oliver book for 13 pounds?? (it's on sale too on amazon)
Please do not waste your money on things you can literally Google and find online, extremely disappointed.

I'm not too sure who this book was aimed at? I read through the book once and only took from it a couple of ideas which in hindsight I could have just google searched or found on Zoe's social media for free. But the majority of the book did not have any unique and original ideas. This would have been nice to keep as the photos are aesthetically pleasing and would be great as a coffee table book, however the advice confused me as although I follow Zoe on Youtube and her social media, I did not feel like I was the target audience even though I'm pretty sure that was her intention.

Many creatif projects and it's a really fun book to read. Very joyful. But when you get further in the book, you realize that it has not anything special of spectacular that you didn't already knew or you could easily find on the internet. I felt like it wasn't worth the money honestly.

I have been a big youtube fan for as long as I can remember and have followed and met many YouTubers. being dyslexic makes it very hard for me to get into a book and really enjoy reading it. however practical fun bok like this with things you can do in it and recipes makes it for a better read for me. I like how it is so warming and is set via the different seasons and it gives you something you can do in each of the seasons. like Zoe, I love the different seasons in their own individual ways and having a book dedicated to informing you and giving you ideas you can do throughout the year is practical and perfect. from baking to parties and things to do this is definitely my go-to book since its release to inspire me with many things to do. my only downside to this book is that all the stuff can be done when you're stuck for more. it would have however taken forever to make a book suitable to giving you something to do continuously over the spring for example. the images in the book are also very interesting as you can see clearly what is trying to be portrayed and can give you the inspiration to do it for yourself. I would definitely recommend this book as it is perfect all year round (obviously).

to add to it my copy is signed :) very excited by that too :)
happy reading
