Laura and her family are warned by a friend that their town has been targeted for destruction with napalm bombs so they start to get their things ready to leave at a moment's notice. When it comes, they barely have time to get out of there before their former lives are totally destroyed and the couple and their kids head for a family homestead in Yuma with Laura's friend Kelly and Mike's parents. They see the signs of destruction as they cross the country which leaves them wondering if Yuma is going to be the safe place to start a new life that they hoped it would be.

I first met these characters in a short story prequel called Burn District, which covers the family getting that first warning and preparing to flee, then the two hour warning and actual attack on their town as they try to flee to safety. My review of this prequel can be read here. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... It has taken me a while to get round to reading the first full book in the series so I thought it was time to see what happens next and decide whether or not to continue with the series. I really liked the characters and thought that this was a different take on an apocalypse event. Now on to my review of the first book in the series.

We follow Laura, Mike, their daughters Elise and Carin, son Ned, and Down Syndrome son Mike Jr, Mike's parents Randy and Carol and Laura's work friend Kelly as they go to Yuma to live with Laura's dad Steve who owns a property there. Laura's sister Jenna is estranged from her family after making hurtful comments about Mike Jr so she is not with them and Laura is unsure what she wants to do about it. Mike's brother Dennis also has nothing to do with his family and is not there either. I suspect that we might find out more about them in future books and it would certainly be interesting if they joined the group with their own friends. I liked seeing how everyone settled in to Yuma after their road trip and start looking at preparing for their future. I liked the scavenging trips where they come into contact with a mixture of good and bad survivors, and this was the more interesting of the two plots.

The second plot we follow is that of Miranda, a blogger who is trying to expose the lies of the government over this so called virus which has been the excuse for mass murder and the relocation of people. She provides people with the story that the burn is really to get rid of those who are a drain on resources. The government decide it is time to get rid of Miranda and her family are also forced to flee from a burning in their own area. We see the government conspiracy starting to unravel as those involved in the burning start to turn on each other or are targeted by other forces at play. I did find the idea of this interesting but the collapse of the conspiracy seems to happen very quickly after we have just met everyone involved in it so it all seemed a little bit rushed. I'd have expected this plot to be drawn out over at least two books before it all fell apart. I also didn't much like the characters we met during this plot especially the opinionated Victor and Grace.

My issue with this book is that I started to dislike quite a few of the characters, now that I'm finding out more about them. I don't know why Laura even invited Kelly when she treats her so badly all the time. I do agree that Kelly is lazy when it comes to certain chores but she does her share of scavenging. Every time Kelly talks to a male, Laura is on about her 'flirting' even when she isn't. We do see from Kelly's own thoughts that she is not interested in Mike at all, and the impression that she was is the result of an attempted joke she made when drunk at Laura's house once. Then Laura gets mad at Kelly and Steve briefly sharing an interest in each other and giving Kelly the cold shoulder. I'm not sure why Laura has turned into such a bitch but it was annoying. When Laura's 16 year old daughter falls in love with a stranger she's known for days and decides to leave with him, her and Mike just agree to it which is crazy in the middle of an apocalypse.

Randy becomes a right pain too. When he met Carol she was already pregnant with Dennis and instead of taking him on as his son as promised, he verbally abused Dennis and made his life a misery until Mike was born. Now that Randy had his own son, he tried to make amends with Dennis but it was too late and Dennis left home the first chance he got. The fact that Carol did nothing to stop any of this puts them both on my shit list along with Laura. So when Carol starts to moan about how dull life has become living in a trailer with the lazy Randy, I had no sympathy for her whining. The most interesting character in this book is Mike Jr. I really liked the introduction of a character with Down Syndrome and the fact that he is not only the nicest character, he is more than capable of looking after himself, contributing to the new society, and protecting his family when it is required. Mike Jr is certainly my favourite.

There were elements of the book that I did like. I liked certain characters especially Steve and Mike Jr, and Miranda and her friends were interesting too. In fact I wish the author had focused more on Miranda rather than dragging her disfunctional family into it. It just filled the book with more characters to not like. I liked seeing the real story behind the burns and that conspiracy was more interesting than the Victor roadtrip. I also liked the scavenging missions of the other plot and every scene with Steve and Mike Jr. I feel that plot has a lot of potential if the bitchy angst was diluted a bit. I did feel that it took away from the plot and that the conspiracy part evaporating did happen too quick to make sense. There were certainly issues with plot and characters that reduced my enjoyment of the book.

Am I going to read the next book? I'm not sure. I sort of want to know what happens but it's not really top of my priority list at the moment.

Burn District: Yuma - a review by Rosemary Kenny

When Hurricane Sandy hits the eastern seaboard of America, it wrecks the hitherto peaceful suburban lives of of residents in the Brandywine River Valley, including the Davis family - Dad Mike Senior, Mom Laura and their four teenagers, Down's Syndrome sufferer Mike Jnr (17), Elise (16), Carin (15) and the youngest, Ned who's just 8 years old and the 'baby' of the family, in this dramatic adventure by Suzanne Jenkins that's a must for your bookshelves!

As they learn from next-door neighbour and Government employee, Pete, it's not the storm that's their greatest danger, but the fact the Government's got no antidote to a deadly virus raging across the continent and their only solution is to create the eponymous 'burn districts' - whether people remain in their homes and offices or not - to hopefully stop the virus in its path. whether this will work is debatable, but their only hope is to gather together Mike's parents, Laura's widower father Steve and a friend of the couple's, Kelly, who Laura feels is somewhat of a risk to her marriage, as Kelly and Mike 'spark' off each other when they're together.

What happens on the long trek to hoped-for safety is engagingly told by the author and a rising sense of danger is expressed by the encounters with looters and others who won't have the family's best interests at heart to say the least! Will they be able to meet up with Steve, who didn't make it to the initial rendezvous, but may be waiting for them on his ranch near the Mexican border? Will it be safe for them to go further South if he is, or will they be safe from the ever-encroaching menace that seems so unbeatable?
If you want the answers to these and more questions, get your copy today and let all your friends know not to miss out either!

Disturbing

The story is a disturbing look at society in USA when a lunatic is in charge and starts making bizarre decisions.

I’m not really sure how it all started but it seems the President Clarke was a lunatic who thought the economy of the country was going to hell in a handcart and he along with his aides and advisors came up with using a hurricane as an excuse to try to take control. The hurricane is said to have brought a virus that isn’t explained nor what its consequences are. Nonetheless the President thinks that the socially disadvantaged are draining the USA economy, health services etc. The President’s solution is to obliterate that part of society but bombing their homes and localities using Napalm.

The bombing of these areas has obvious consequences that people start to flee. Society completely breaks down in the face of Armageddon and the only way of surviving is by looting whatever one can get one’s hands on.

The story follows small family units and a group that are intent on finding out what is happening so they can warn the wider population. The families and the group’s paths cross as their aims of finding a new homestead intertwine.

The story doesn’t really have an ending so that along with its unclear start results in only three stars. As I already have Burn District the prequel perhaps I should have read that first as it may have set the scene better that this book. I’ve also got Burn District 2 but I will read the prequel first and write a review about that too. I might then alter this review but I’m not prejudging anything.

First Sight: The Prequel: An interesting intro to Jack and Pam and how they met. The family and friends of Pam are interesting in their own right and I'm interested in reading more from this author. This book was well written and orderly, giving enough information about everyone and everything. 5*

Burn District - A well written short story about the horrors a Pennsylvania family must face while fleeing their home to safety in the Southwest. Introduces the characters and scenario before the burning. Sets the pace for Burn District: Yuma. 5*

Burn District (1 or Yuma) - Why are we worried about WMD, when the higher ups in our government can do this to the USA? Included is a prologue, which I appreciate. A well written, action packed suspense with believable characters and a fast paced, developed plot picking up where the prequel Burn District left off. This series definitely should have the reader rethinking social and constitutional beliefs. Editing didn't catch all the mistakes. It's helpful to read Burn District first. 5*

Burn District by Suzanne Jenkins is a gripping story about the end of the world as we know it. I gave it four stars.

I received a complimentary Kindle copy from Amazon. That did not change my opinion for this review.

"While the government shuts down around them, Mike and Laura hide out in the Arizona desert with family and friends. Looting becomes a way of life. Soon, strangers arrive at their encampment with news from the outside and it doesn't sound good. How long do they have before they must run again?"

♥️💙🌅 TOTALLY CAPTIVATING.

October 2012:

Hurricane Sandy ravages the New Jersey shores.

The families watched television attentively, waiting for reassuring news.

After the hurricane, the first cases of a deadly virus were reported...

------------

After the prequel, here is a totally captivating sequel that mixes genres.

I liked following the characters who survive after an "apocalypse" which is not at all what it appears to be.

An amazing read, read in one go because I couldn't put the book down.

I can’t wait to read the sequel!
I recommend.

The scenario in this series could have been called post-eplocaliptic just a few years ago, but in these troubled times it is all too possible. So well imagined, so well written, from the point of view of private Laura and Carol, who are on the run, trying to survive the odds, and from the point of view of those pulling the strings, the political machinations that cause havoc in the country.

Just love it. Five stars.

The plot of this book was pretty great but it was a bit disappointing due to not really being able to like the majority of the characters. I also felt that alot of the drama/bitchiness in Laura's family took away from enjoying what the family was getting done. miranda and her crew were ok but we did not get much info on them.

The conspiracy/politics was pretty hard to follow because it was kinda half done. It was ok.

Interesting story. How do we survive without the internet and electricity? This dystopian novel deals with life in America when the government decided to do away with those on government assistance. Whole towns are burned with Napalm. Deals with survival tactics of 2 main families. Well written. Thought provoking. I'm ready to read the next one!

I was most interested in the escape story of Laura her family, how they try to build a new life. When more and more persons were introduced I became a little confused and I felt there was too much politics. But overall I liked the story and I'm going to start book 2 now.

It's not a favorite of mine.

Not a favored format. I don't particularly like changing back and forth between characters. None the less the story was different and the characters were real. They didn't shine trying to cope with disaster.

No ending

Book leaves you hanging. Sorry excuse for writing of you can't or won't complete a story. Come complexity obstructing land itself to an ending, but she could have tried.

A Snappy and Fast Read

This is a great read for quarantine: it is fast, fun, and doesn't tax one's time or intellect. Yes, there are glaring plot potholes, several editing errors, and a few factual oops. But it is fun. Read, relax, and enjoy.

Burn District 1 by Suzanne Jenkins is the story of a family having to flee their home after Hurricane Sandy causes a deadly virus that has the potential to devastate the world’s population. The outbreak provokes a government overreaction. Fleeing their home in the Brandywine River Valley just ahead of government napalm attacks on infected areas populated by the poor, they make their way across the country to Arizona, where things are only marginally better, determined in the meantime to see that people know the truth.
A profound subject that, unfortunately, poor proofreading and line editing mars in this book. There are a number of grammatical problems that should have been caught in the proofreading stage, and the author does far too much telling rather than showing the reader what’s going on and how it impacts the characters.
With all the telling, though, the reader’s not given enough back story on the family to understand what motivates them, and the story tends to go back and forth in time which I found quite confusing.
Top marks for the theme, but I have to detract for the execution.

There was quite a bit of potential, but overall I was somewhat disappointed. The characters are caricatures in some ways, and I was distracted by how well each of them fit their part. As a special needs parent, I do think the author did a pretty good job with junior, though. In the end, I wasn't caring what happened to any of the main characters... I am curious about how the country rebuilds, but probably not enough to follow the story with these women.

My new pet serial novel

I love how everything gets pulled together, yet leaves you wondering about the future. I read so much that it's hard to keep me from finding faults. This is a great first in a series. Thank you

Thought Provoking!

In the current political climate this doesn't seem too far fetched. There are certainly people out there that wouldn't have a problem if something like this happened! Shows where narrow minded self importance will get us.

Good book

End of civilization as we know it, but not from other countries. Our power hungry gov. decides to bomb everyone who are are welfare or illegal. Sadly that's not a surprise. Good characters, just hard to imagine people so ready to come together so quickly.

Two and a half stars. The premise has a lot of potential but the character development was really lacking and overall, it ended up being a disappointment.
