In 1934, after the death of her mother, Megan Kinkade is put on a train bound for Maine to live with her estranged father. Megan soon discovers that her father, whom she supposed to be a respected and wealthy doctor, operates an insane asylum.
Megan’s newfound life becomes anything but normal as she encounters a peculiar boy and the asylum’s misfit patients and staff. As a community outcast, Megan is met with heartache, reckless friendships, and the chance for love as she tries to find acceptance from town’s people and classmates.
Megan’s adventures take her through a strange new world of unexpected secrets and haunting pasts that blur the line between reality and illusion.
This is a great read. It goes through the range of emotions that deal with many of the trials America faced in the 1930's from the perspective of a young woman growing into an adulthood. The book takes many unique turns and the author keeps you on your toes as fall in love with the characters. Although this is fiction, we can all relate to the trials and heartache, as well as the life lessons and personal growth the main character endures. Ill end with my favorite passage from the book.
"Some people send their whole lives searching for who they really are and never make the discovery. When all they'd have to do is stop looking outside of themselves and look within."
Words cannot describe the love I have for this amazing book. M L Everett has a way of bringing characters to life and making them feel as if they are a part of you. You laugh with them, cry with them, and love them as if they are family. This book teaches so many life lessons. I have learned so much about friends, family, and caring for those who are labeled as ‘different’. I am so fortunate to have been able to read this book. It will be in my heart “today, tomorrow, and forever.”
If you liked Before We were Yours, Where the Crawdads Sing, Sold on a Monday, The Glass Castle or other books of the same era, then you're sure to like Loons by ML Everett. Well written and full of engaging characters.
I. LOVED. THIS. BOOK....!!! It was hard to put down. It was engaging and I felt I knew all the characters because the author did such a good job of describing them. This book tugged at my heartstrings and had me in tears in three places. There were surprises and suspense that kept me coming back for more. I have to say, I actually missed some regular tv shows for this book. I can't wait to see what this author has in store for us in his next book. I will definately buy it. I am a fan.
Wow, what a find! This book took me on a journey that was so easy to get lost in. I felt myself take on the life and raw emotions of the main character, Megan. Seeing through her eyes came so easily thanks to the incredible pictures painted in my mind from the author. I highly recommend this book and the unpredictable path it takes the reader on. Great book!!
This book is a delightful read with unexpected twists and turns leading you descriptively through its pages. Engaging Christian imagery and wordplay give depth to a seemingly simple storyline that magnifies the characters, their actions, and the daily routine of their lives. A little bit of mystery....a little bit of suspense....and a who lot of enjoyment!!
This book is a testament in youth, strength, love, and humanity. It's a reminder of the cruelties and ignorance of youth and humanity and also the goodness and kindness everyone has within. And of America in the 1930s. Definitely a book to read again.
