In Elizabethan England, a fifteen-year-old boy is entrusted by his dying brother with the mission of warning Christopher Marlowe of a plot on his life.
A native of Lynchburg, Virginia, Ms. Faulkner developed her love of history growing up and taught school in Virginia before moving to New York City where she wrote many books for children.
Faulkner writes as though she personally lived in the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1, so comfortably does she describe highways and laws of the time! When Dickon is summoned away from his studies at the university, he hardly expects it is to take care of his brother's last moments on earth, or that he will be tossed into a race against time to warn the playwright, Christopher Marlow, of a plot against his life. From highway rogues to lovable friends, he grows and adjust to life outside of the books-heading straight into the plague area and danger. Lovable characters set in a time that is hard to find good books cast in! The difference in a fifteen year old character in such a setting is quite a contrast to the usual fifteen year olds in most novels, and Dickon is well rounded. Cecily is such a lovable spitfire, Robin a loyal actor of the road, and I learned ever so much about England in one fiction novel than I have in many a history book.
