J.D. Groom's short story "Envy" is full of action, and shows that life at the top isn't always all it's cracked up to be. We never know when those we're envious of actually might envy us. This story depicts the sort of relationship nobody really wants, but more importantly, the kind of friendship every person on the planet needs. Well-written, engaging, Envy is a real page-turner with real moments of chilling suspense followed by elation.
After reading the preview of this short story, I downloaded it and ate it up right away – it’s that good! Kate is dominated by her wealthy boyfriend/boss, and the feeling of losing oneself under someone else’s control is portrayed extremely well. I’m never sure how to rate short stories as they often leave me wanting more, this was no exception but perhaps that’s a good thing. This was a well written, enjoyable quick read with a good dose of tension and I look forward to the rest of the series. 4.5 Stars
This is a fast-paced quick read. The MC is trapped in a controlling relationship with someone very powerful. You get a real sense of the suffocated sensation of her life being sucked out of her and losing the person she once was. When the opportunity to escape presents itself, she needs to figure out of she's strong enough to go. A great short story that will have you turning the page until the end.
A great short story of a toxic relationship and how abuse doesn't need to come through physical pain, at times even worse. This short story kept me on the edge of my seat. Perfect in all directions. Perfect for those who barely got time to read but wish to read a complete, exciting, story in one sitting. I only wish I could see what happened with Joe afterward.
A somewhat dark gripping short story about mental abuse and how it isolates people from the world. It was a quick read that made me think, and I would absolutely have wanted more of this. It had everything a short story needs though. Nothing was missing. Well done.
