Everyone knows you don’t mess with Fae on a New Moon.
But the Fae that Aisling Quinn deals with don’t need a thin Veil to cross and jeopardize her carefully created life. As a powerful witch, she’s battled for agency in realms determined to control her. Now, she has a circle of friends she loves, a job where she excels, and a craft she’s perfecting.
Enter a handsome stranger magically linked to her and the Fae fiancé who won’t leave her side until threats against her life stop. As if that will ever happen.
Aisling has trained in magic use, self-defense, and secrecy, but no amount of training prepared her for a curse that hits so close to home. Then again, she never anticipated having two men by her side ready to fight, and die, with her.
With a diverse cast of characters and no shortage of danger or romance, the explosive world of A Curse in Ash, the first in an adult contemporary fantasy series, will leave you breathless for more.
Julie is the author of the fantasy romance In Ash series. A Curse in Ash, A Prophecy in Ash, and A Destiny in Ash. This is a completed romantacy trilogy.
She also self-published her first book, Shoot Down the Wendy Bird: A Collection of Flash Fiction & Poetry in January 2016. She graduated with a degree in Psychology from Cabrini College.
Julie's got a soft spot for awful SyFy movies (honestly, they're SO bad they're amazing) and will defend Sharknado until the day she dies.
I am incredibly biased because Julie is one of my favorite people in all the land but this was honestly incredible and after that ending I need book two, like, yesterday. Also, Brynach can GET. IT. This was SO! GOOD!!!!
Put this one on your TBRs people! Spicy fae alert!
I haven’t been this sucked into a book in a while. A Curse in Ash is addicting, fast-paced, and sheer fae perfection. Whether you read a lot of fae books or this is your first dip into the Seelie and Unseelie courts, this was one of the best and clearest descriptions of how fae worlds works. AND THE SPICE! Put on your pearls because you will be clutching them!
We are tossed into Aisling’s world of fae, witchcraft, and newly found adult life freedom. She’s got a great friend group and a job working with an investigation team of potential fae related crimes. When a smexy guy from Ireland comes to town and they are forced together through things they can’t control, things get spicy. Torn between the sexy fae prince she’s known her whole life and this bond with hot Irish man…why choose? Dear god, please don’t choose, girl. When mysterious things start happening in town, Aisling takes it into her own hands to figure out what is going on. I know, it’s like all my buzzwords in one description.
I genuinely loved this book, the plot held my attention and constantly had me questioning things but cast is amazing. The characters are what made this book. There’s so much healthy representation across the board and I loved (and loathed) everyone who walked onto the page. I can’t wait for book two and Dexter can suck it. That is all.
This book was amazing. I am always a suck for MFM relationships, and now that I have this polyamorous fae/witch fantasy romance in my life, I will never look back. The next time anyone asks me for a fantasy romance book, I am going to recommend this one! It is a fast-paced, swoon-worthy, addictive, and positively queer. Julie wove this world together seamlessly and I never had any issue understanding the magic system or the politics.
I do want to mention that this is a CONTEMPORARY fantasy romance story-but we do travel into the Fae realm.
One of my favourite aspects of this novel was the healthy conversations surrounding sexuality and consent. Our thruple communicates clearly to one another throughout the novel about how they feel, what their expectations are, and what they are comfortable with. I loved seeing such a healthy representation of a relationship.
Ash is a woman who knows what she wants, and she isn't afraid to lay it all down on the table for everyone around her. She loves fiercely and the men in her life love her back equally.
I am in love with Brynach. Yes, Riordan is such a sweetheart. But Brynach has my heart. He is this buff, broody, powerful, Unseelie prince - but he also stays up late to play video games, always has dinner cooked for when Ash comes home, and is protective AF. You can't come up with a better man.
I will say that this book leaves off on a cliff-hanger, and I am so annoyed that I have to wait for book two! I am so excited to see more of Ash, Riordan, and Brynach. I also adored Breena and hope we get to see her character evolve and deepen in future books.

(Sept 21) Review to Come BUT in the meantime let me tell you…. IT IS A POLY FAE/WITCH FANTASY ROMANCE!!! WHO SAYS OUR BADASS MC HAS TO PICK BETWEEN TWO MEN? NOT HER. SHE GETS THEM BOTH. AND SHE IS KICKASS AND CONFIDENT IN HER SEXUALITY AND ISNT AFRAID TO PUT PEOPLE WHO OVERSTEP HER BOUNDARIES IN THEIR PLACE.
I’m also just hello soft of Brynach (her Fae fiancé who is a secret gamer, a great cook, and buff as f*ck)
First off, how the holy baby jesus are you going to end a book like that? I feel attacked.
Secondly, the author is a friend and I was given an early copy of this book to review. So as always in this situation, keep that in mind while reading my review.
This is the adult, SPICY, fae, witchy, polyamorous, romance, action flick, rom com book we've all been waiting for. There were a lot of things about this book that stood out to me (as we'll discuss) but one that I would be remiss to omit is the way we see some of the tropes this genre is known for, and yet done in a really healthy way. Do we have an alpha-male fae sex God? For sure. But our heroine puts him in place, with respect. Is it a love triangle? Nope. Our male love interests know how important they both are for our MC and the three of them treat each other with respect and dignity and honestly, just mutual love and trust. And a bad bitch can get behind that. I'm the bad bitch in this scenario, if it wasn't clear.
Character work? Fan-fucking-tastic. Everyone felt properly fleshed out and enjoyable and relatable. Even characters with negative qualities had those qualities explored and given the depth to not be a one-note "Oh they're evil" or "oh they're good".
I did really enjoy Julie's writing style. The addition of these heart-felt moments in the middle of some witty banter, something tragic just made things seem more real and tangible.
I will say the plot meandered a bit for me and I felt like the end was a little anti-climactic but then the epilogue left off on a giant cliffhanger. So like the buildup was there but almost like it came at the wrong time? Series books are weird man.
Honestly, I just had a great time. It took me longer than expected to read this and I feel like part of that is because I was having a blast spending time with these characters and I just didn't want it to end.
Started off really strong but then went downhill, and I had to push myself to finish. This was a MFM fantasy romance/romantasy, except while she's with both men, she's kind of only really with 1 of them. It was really weird that they all loved each other, but 1 of the guys didn't let her touch the other 1. I also didn't think there was enough development between the 2 men becoming friends--1 day they were just both like, you're cool as long as you want to keep her safe too.
Brynach was probably the best character, but he really got the short end of the stick. We didn't get his POVs. It was also pretty unclear to me why the FMC hated Brynach at the beginning. They grew up together and she had a childhood crush on him, then they were engaged/betrothed, then she HATES him at the beginning of the book for seemingly no reason because he does nothing wrong, and then like 2 chapters later she's like, "but i always have loved him and he's the only bodyguard I feel safe with." It was like the author wanted to write a bad boy dark fae prince villain, but he didn't actually do anything villainous.
The first 50% of this book was entirely relationship driven, which I kind of liked, but the last 50% was all plot, plot, plot. One thing after another happened without anything being resolved. I couldn't even follow all of the plot happening. There were also a ton of characters who were introduced at the beginning who just never made another appearance or were written out of the story halfway through (Trent, Ollie, Amber, Kara/Tara, "Pammy"...). Finally, I also didn't realize this was a series, and literally nothing was resolved at the end.
This was sad because I think the world and MFM fantasy romance had potential, but I watched it slowly drop from 4 stars to 2 stars in my mind. I was really pushing myself to keep reading at the end because I was bored.
I probably won't be reading the next book (if there even is one), but I'm glad that I finally checked this one off my TBR.
Disclaimer: Julie is an internet friend of mine, BUT all my opinions in this review are about the story and writing, NOT about the fact that I hang out with Julie for sprints every week.

High-Low: »Dislikes -I feel like Riordan saying "pretty please with sprinkles on top" felt a TINY bit out of character… I think it was supposed to just be funny, but it didn't feel like his kind of humor to me. -The attractiveness of all the main characters turning the heads of every passerby is something that I see quite a bit in fantasy. Personally, I'm not a fan of this, but particularly if it is reiterated frequently. Later in the book, this fell off, but it was sprinkled throughout the beginning. I finally noted it on page 105. -While I understand the need for a device to make it so that only certain Fae could be Aisling's guard, I was not a fan of the idea that common fae needed to have physical intimacy with another fae to remain on the human side of the Veil. While I see the benefit of this in Aisling's arc, and the theme it brings forth, I find myself thinking about all the common fae who are forced to choose between sex to stay on the human side of the Veil or going back. There may be further explanations of this in the second or third book, though. »Likes -GENERAL LIKES: I LOVE that the characters are trying to improve and grow themselves. They ALSO try to communicate and work to treat each other the best they can! The characters are SO loveable!! I also love that this magic system is slowly being expanded: we only get a bit more to chew on at a time, making it so easy to understand the world and magic! I see a lot of potential for this world to expand, too! -32, Trent calling Sean out for being unfairly rude towards Aisling<3 -Every time something came up that might be hard to guess the pronounciation for, it was explained within the text in a way that felt natural. -Aisling's mom!! SO wise! 46, she calls Aisling out for not being fair to Riordan about the situation they found themselves in and how that related to his personal life. -Some of the small details really did it for me. 65, Tara reminds Riordan of her and Kara's names, mentioning that names are hard to remember when you're learning a lot at once! -Aisling, 69: "I'm not ashamed of my magic or my connection to the elements." -REALLY connected with the moment where Lettie was telling Aisling she didn't have to do life alone and she deserved someone special in her life, 98. THE FEELS! -I'm actually just completely obsessed with the entire hiking section. It's fine. -114: "It's normal for your feet to find a path directly where you need to be." -116: "Not a thing wrong with the way you look, Charlotte. Stop putting yourself down, even if it is a joke." "Complicated doesn't always mean bad." -127, Riordan doesn't take advantage of her emotional state! He respects her needs NOW, but also her needs LATER, and draws a line as to what amount of intimacy is ok when not in a state clear of emotional sway. -132 and 133, SHARING IS CARING, tehe <3 <3 -141, I LOVE how comfortable Lettie and Riordan are with each other as friends, even though they just met. -142, "I don't trust Fae Hulk." -147, Trent hugging Riordan like they've known each other forever. <3 -151 OBSESSED with the thing with Rin on this page!! -159 "In one place I'm less than and in the other I'm hiding half of myself because I'm too much." MAN this hit me hard! -186 Getting to see Aisling encourage a young woman to address sexual assault made my heart SO happy! -190 "I'm not an easy woman to love." UGGHHHH Julie why are you writing my SOUL on paper???? -200 "How's our girl?" TEHEHE! -208 "Consent in a high stress situation isn't good enough consent.." -209 THE MISS CONGENIALITY REFERENCE!! -217 "I'm passionate about anything I dedicate myself to." -219 "My ego isn't important, but your safety is." -228 Brynach dancing and dusting Aisling's house.. I CANNOT. -231 I LOVE that Trent pays Aisling without question! Business is BUSINESS, and your friends pay too!! -234 I read "magically castrated" and died on the spot. -254 Aisling's mom talking about her daughter's fighting skills, lol. -279 "Thank you, Riordan, for seeing my darkness and doing your best to bring me back into the light. What would I do without you?" I DIE over the effort he and Brynach went through to help her, AND her acceptance of the happiness they gifted her with! -287 WHAT A SWEET GIFT, I CAN'T! -290 Riordan was NOT ok, but he set his physical discomfort aside for the sake of Brynach's need to get to his sister and find out what was happening. -305 CONFESSIONS!!! <3 <3 <3 -329 "You're both mine, even if I don't remember why." -330 Being claimed by a certain someone soothing Riordan's ache, AAHHHHH! ALSO, "we're a team and we love each other" AHHHHH!!! -331 Fae gesture meaning was so beautiful!! -334, PROOF that Brenna is a softy underneath! -363 Lettie choosing to FACE HER FEAR, I CANNOOTTTTTT!!!!
Overall:- I wanted to take the time to do a more in depth review on this one because it is so close to my heart! I'm so proud of Julie and her hard work to get her to this point! It's SO not easy! This is a PHENOMENAL book and I can't wait to watch her continue to grow and paint more worlds for us to go live in for a while!!

THE 411...
Aisling Quinn has created a semi-normal life alongside humans, she’s a half Fae Witch who has learned how to make a living from her witchy abilities. The Veil exists to keep Fae from crossing over however those keeping tabs on her can’t really be stopped by the Veil. Aisling is a consultant to the Supernatural Police Department and a Tarot Reader on the side, she has her friend group cheering her on in life when said life gets turned upside down. When a sexy tattooed Irish stranger comes to town unintentionally activating their bond and her Fae Fiancé refuses to leave her side while she’s under attack….things get hot and interesting! Aisling is the epitome of an independent sexy resourceful bad a** who sets boundaries while also having two men willing to throw down for her! and even accept each others role in her life…mhmmm this gave me major Polyamory vibeZ and I for one was there for it. Aisling knows what both these men need emotionally and cares for them both deeply. How she managed to get them to coexist is still beyond me but it was super enjoyable seeing their interactions play out when fiercely protecting her.
Riordan is bonded to Aisling which intensifies their connection and the sexual attraction that was already there before their bonding. Riordan never wanted a bond, he has serious opposition to it because of the the role it has played in robbing him of his loved ones. That all changes when the inevitable happens and he begins to live and breathe Aisling.
“sex between bonded pairs had been the cause of power outages, freak storms, and changing tides. It was powerful magic, and she was curious as hell about it” – On sex with a Ravdi aka the person bonded to a witch
Brynach is the Dark Prince of the Unseelie Court and as Aisling’s betrothed, he must ensure her safety at all costs. Brynach has grown up with Aisling which means there’s history and tenderness there. Although they’ve never kissed and at one point it was thought to be a case of unrequited love, all cards are on the table now and he is out to earn her love before they wed.
“He knew her favorite foods, knew her preferences without having to ask. That’s what a shared history could do. Again, she was reminded that life would be so much easier if she could love him the way everyone wanted her to. All she had to do was give herself permission to fall. She just had to dive in, no looking back.” – Brynach
WRITING & FINAL THOUGHTS...
This book had me from the minute Riordan rode into town…I figured I was going to lose an afternoon but a whole day?!?! compulsively UNPUTDOWNABLE! These characters suck you in and before you know it, you’re invested in their whole backstory and what it is they deeply desire. When reading Fantasy/Romance, I tend to either really love the female main character or her love interest(s), but never both or in this case all three. I absolutely LOVE Aisling with her potion making skills, Tarot reading side job and loyal supportive BFF ways. She was well fleshed out which makes it hard not to root for her getting BOTH fellas, jussayin! haha! Brynach and Riordan are the both sweet and swag rolled into one and the way they love left me at times nodding my head in approval. Especially Riordan who knows how to self love and therefore is unwilling to do anything that compromises that, truly a dream! The sex scenes were off the meter, I was at times sitting at my desk very aware of this being A+ quality content haha! The world building was *Chefs Kiss* on both sides of the veil. I was living my best life Readers. Visually descriptive scenes of Aisling collecting herbs for her potions and the gates to the Unseelie Court opening only once they’ve tasted the blood from your finger prick and identified you, leave you engrossed in this world. This book is beautifully diverse and filled with loving connections. The friendships that make up Aisling’s circle are some of the best I’ve seen on paper. They check on each other and at times check each other if they step out of line, they’re healthy and exactly what we all look for in our friend groups. I’m ready for the next installment and even have a few theories I’d like to see come to fruition 😉

I really tried to like this book but just could not do it. Some of my issues with it:
- Story was hard to follow: Most of the occurrences driving the story were hard to follow and felt like they come out of nowhere. - Romance was forced: The supposed reversed harem storyline felt flat and forced. - Character development was severely lacking: The characters were flat and were never shown to be as described. I.E. Brynach.
This is a solid start to a series where fae and action are around every corner, and fate brings lovers together. I really enjoyed getting to see the magic in this world and want to know how things are going to go for this throuple.
I had the esteemed privilege of beta reading this novel for Julie. As it’s a beta and still in process, I won’t give a detailed review yet but I assure you all, this story is very much worth the wait. Full review to come later.
I know Julie from her YouTube channel and wanted to pick this up to support her. I wish I had enjoyed it a bit more .. I just found the plot a bit too thin.
For a debut novel this was exceptionally well written, it was easy to read and I love the way the author wrote the world and explained by showing instead of info dumping. The story line was original and I sniffed out a love triangle very fast and was disappointed, BUT it went in a completely different way than I expected so never fear do not lose hope. The romance in this is budding, there's tension and eveything was just a good time.
“I’m such a hard person to love,” laments the magical special girl with a ton of love interests I almost dnf because towards the middle I was pretty bored, but I did enjoy the evolution of Brynach and Riordan’s relationship and I’d like to see where it goes with them and Aisling. I could not take it seriously every time a character would go like “fuck, that’s sexy/sad/crazy” etc
I loved every second of this! The characters (especially Brynach ❤️) , the relationships, the magic…SO good! I need book two as soon as possible. The wait is going to kill me! If you are looking for a witchy/fae contemporary fantasy with a poly romance, definitely pick up A Curse in Ash!
I have to be honest. I bought A Curse in Ash because my cousin Julie wrote it.
When I find the time to read it's usually business or positivity books.
I bought the book to support her because that's what family does, right?!
Sat down with it on a Sunday morning thinking okay, I'll read a few pages. I had no idea what a fae even was. I actually thought it was the name of a person and had to Google to be sure.
I've never read a book like this but It pulled me in from page one. I wound up reading 24 out of 37 chapters the first day. Woke up early in the morning the next day to read more and then as soon as I got home from work finished it off.
It was fun, easy to read and I loved each and every character. Outstanding first time novel. Well done! I can't wait for book two!
This was a really fun book. I don't know though, there was so much going on and I feel like almost none of it was ultimately addressed. I liked it but I can't say I'd read the next book, assuming there will be a next book.

This book was one I was so excited to read and can I just say it lived up to my expectations. The characters were engaging and well written and I think we all know that a lot of time you get flay characters with a good plot or deep developed characters with no storyline Well you get both here and the characters are all so likable even the onrs you don't want to like ;)
Book two is on the way and we all really need to see how this is going. I'm sorry I'm a crap reviewer but please please get this book and enjoy it, there is a pirates of the Caribbean ref and I know that is when I fell in love. Sassy and sexy characters that offer up a good plot to follow I mean come on
I had been watching Julie's videos for a while prior to the release of this book so I always knew she was writing a book but I never knew what it was about or when to expect its release... needless to say when I tripped over this novel, saw the stunning cover followed by the author I ordered it immediately. I was so intrigued about this story and I'm here to tell you not to sleep on this one!
I love the world, the magic, the characters and where the story is headed. It's also really well-written and compulsively readable... I never wanted to put the book down and was legitimately sad when I got to the end. That being said the reason I only gave this four stars instead of five is because I felt that the story that had been really solid started to fray around the edges a bit towards the end and there were some scenes that were a bit cringe-y. I also would have liked if our sexy dark fae, Brynach, had maintained some of his snark and badassery instead of going a bit soft... don't get me wrong- I still adore him and there isn't much you could do to change that I just really liked that sliver of bad that made him a bit more appealing.
Simply put, I am screaming for book two while also trying to be patient and remind myself that Julie is taking the time needed to make the next book the best it can be! I'm over here waiting with bated breath until said book is in my hands!
What an amazing read, took me right out of a reading slump. Where do I begin? I guess I'll start by mentioning how well-written each character is. Ash is such a badass female lead. It was refreshing reading about a woman that not only knows what she wants and works towards it but also knows when she's wrong and owns it. Riordon (I had such a hard time pronouncing his name correctly!) made me love him and made me hate him at the same time in the beginning. It's safe to say that I hold nothing but love in my heart for him now. I loved how expressive he was despite everything he has gone through and everything he had initially intended to do. Brynach (definitely have a Bry bias) is everything a girl could ever ask for! I enjoyed how open he was with the idea of Riordan being in their lives if it meant that Ash would be happy. I loved the bromance that has started between Rory and Bry!. Just some honorable mentions to Trent and Lettie such amazing friends and people!
The diversity in the book is amazing! Bi rep, Gay rep, lesbian rep, plus-size rep, pan rep! it was so pleasing to read. Another thing that I enjoyed is how major of a topic consent was and I was living! I'm invested, I can't wait to see Brynach's POV!
Fae, Gays, & Witches. The perfect combination for the most magical setting. If you’ve been looking out for an Adult book with all of the above but somehow still need more convincing, this book has: An Irish love interest, polyamory, STUNNING communication and boundaries throughout (seriously, I was taking notes) 📝, magic, mystery, diversity, and exceptional world building. Not to mention that this is very much character driven with fast-paced writing, and a plot that has me staring wistfully out the window awaiting book 2 like it’s my lover off at war fighting a mysterious darkness that threatens the world.
My bisexual heart doesn’t know where to begin between Ash, Brynach, and Riordan. I love them all can’t wait to see where the story takes them. Every character is fully fleshed out and living rent free in my brain. The writing style is so refreshing, funny, and immersive. It’s so easy to get lost in this world, and picture it vividly along the way. I can’t wait to see more of these characters (and find out what the hell is going on at the end). 😳
P.S as an Irish reader, I loved Riordan and very much swooned at the use of “a stoirin” from Bry. 💖
This was a light and easy fantasy read, which is definitely something I needed. I think we need more contemporary fantasy out there-- it helps burnt out fantasy readers like me, and also helps introduce fantasy to those who generally don't read it. I think it uses a cool blend of paranormal witches with some higher fantasy Fae. It mostly takes place in our modern world, though, so nothing is too overwhelming.
The romance is full of clear communication and support. I always dislike romance novels that use miscommunication as part of the plot or conflict. It was so refreshing to have characters open and honest with each other.
The characters themselves are super lovable and I wish them the best. One in particular has been through a lot in just 374 pages. I know this is a series, so I hope they catch a break at some point.
I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the series. Keep up the great work, Julie! :)
I came across this book thanks to @unpluggedbookbox and honestly I’m super happy! It was an really interesting story! Witches stories are one of my favorites topics to read about and this book didn’t disappoint!!! Ash is a badass witch that works part time helping the police to resolve crimes related to magic! She’s strong and beautiful… then we have Riordan! A sexy Irishman with a troublesome past and a strong hate towards magic!!! Destiny brings them together and now they have to solve a mystery… Honestly was such a perfect book for a Saturday nite! #BookOfTheDay #bookgram #booksarelife #booksaremagic #booksareessential #booksarelove #booksarebetter #booksarecool #KeepReading #NeverStopReading #Readmorebooks #bookgoals #bookdragon #bookaholics #bookaddiction
I really wanted to love this book. And I did, at first. I think the characters were a little flat, the dialog was poor, all of the issues just seemed like too much. Too much all in one book and none were really given the depth they deserved. I'm understanding there will be more books to this series and I'm unsure if I'll read them, but I do wish everything, including the characters, were given more. They all deserve that. Some characters, things, events, places had great detail, others didn't and seemed rushed and jumbled together. Like I mentioned, I loved it at first and couldn't put it down, then I found myself picking it back up every few days just to get through it. And the end was not great. It didn't leave me wanting more, it just left me rather frustrated. It wasn't terrible, and I love fantasy fiction and all things witchy and Fae, but this book just didn't do it for me.
Great effort for a debut novel! Good story. With a little polishing, this author has a bright career ahead.
• The story jumped from one scene to another without fully closing out the scene. The characters would be in the bathroom doing whatever they were doing at the time, but before wrapping up that scene all of a sudden they were in a bakery. I had to reread multiple places in the book to ensure I didn't miss anything.
• Using "Goddess" instead of "God" was annoying. The most feminine man I know would not use Goddess in place of God, so why would the hunky main characters use it?
• The relationship between the three principal characters is complete fantasy. I kept thinking, "Yeah, right." A girl can dream, I guess.
• Not the author's fault, several three-letter words were not correctly printed. was=as, the=he, she=he, etc.
Oddly written and a little difficult to fall into but once I got into it, I was able to REALLY get into it. The characters were okay but seemed very young. This had strong YA vibes but with lots of sexy time and cursing. I wish the perspective was in the first person specifically if it was going to shift between Aisling and Riordan. It seemed unnecessary in 3rd but it wasn't difficult.
I don't know if it was the book box edition or just bad editing but this is not an ARC and it had SO MANY mistakes. It was actually distracting.
I appreciate a good throuple but this one was too easy. I would keep reading to see what happens but honestly, it was way too unrealistic and lacked a lot of authenticity in my opinion.
