I read Snyder and Capullo's run in trade when it was first released. It's one of my favorite runs on Batman of all time. Snyder and Capullo are both at their creative peaks. It held up just as well going back to read it in this omnibus edition. I thought the story was more fluid when presented in publication issue (except for issue #28 which I'll get into). The original trades cherry-picked out the smaller 1 and 2 issue stories collecting them in Batman Vol. 6: Graveyard Shift. Those stories read much better in order as there are subplots running through the book. Issue #23.2 and #28 are presented at the end of the book as they are completely stand alone stories that would have interrupted the longer story had they been inserted in publication order. #23.2 is the Riddler story and #28 is the lead-in to Batman:Eternal.

My reviews for each story arc can be found below.
Batman, Volume 1: The Court of Owls
Batman, Volume 2: The City of Owls
Batman, Volume 3: Death of the Family
Batman, Volume 4: Zero Year - Secret City
Batman, Volume 5: Zero Year - Dark City
Batman, Volume 6: Graveyard Shift

Easily, the best looking and written Batman to date. Better than any Millers, Loebs or Moores. Finds a good balance with being honest with itself and flowing nicely and with breathtaking pace.

A masterpiece.

Holy Moly Batman, this is the motherfuckin SHIT.

But for real Scott Snyder is a huge reason I'm such a big Batman fan and revisiting these a decade later, it's no wonder why.

We start off with a bang with Court of Owls/City of Owls and it's just an amazing storyline that adds so much Mythos to Bruce while also being exciting and twisted, and dark. The plot point of an ancient, secret society operating in the shadows of Gotham, revealed through the discovery of hidden Talon assassins and a deeply personal threat to the Wayne family, is simply breathtaking. It challenges everything Bruce thought he knew about his city's history.

Then we got Joker's return in Death of the Family, which is just amazing. I love his serial killer, ghoulish feel to him. Almost like a fairy tale villain with a twisted sense of humor. The shocking moment of the Joker severing his own face and then targeting the entire Bat-Family in a series of horrific "family dinners" creates an unparalleled level of dread and psychological terror.

The Zero Year story that closes it out is solid, and a pretty good Riddler story, but it's the weakest of that bunch by far for me. Saying that, the weakest, is still a pretty good story in the end! Its strength lies in showing a young, inexperienced Batman fighting for the soul of Gotham against a city-wide blackout and transformation into a savage urban jungle by the Riddler. It's a great look at the Dark Knight's early days and his resilience.

Overall this is a perfect run to get into the Bat character. I think Snyder mostly hits his goal, and his Bruce is ALWAYS fun, which is not something I can always say.

A 4 out of 5.

I’ve read just about every bit of Batman content you could get your hands on, and Snyder & Capullo’s run on Batman is easily my favourite stretch of any creative team. It’s weirdly satisfying o see this hopeful, optimistic hyper capable take on Batman that still manages to (more often than not) absolutely drip with tension as a horror story (with the exception of the swashbuckling Zero Year)
Love this run and the Omnibus is totally the best way to consume it all. Cannot wait for vol. 2 to finally grace my bookshelf

Forever a book to jump into at anytime. I can´t remember how many times in how many formats I´ve read the court of owls storyline and I still can´t get enough of it. Each time I read it I find new details about the artwork and the dialog that is just plane clevver of Snyder and Capullo.

The first half of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Batman might be the best the character's ever been written. It's grounded while fantastical, a Batman story while inextricably linked to Bruce Wayne, and character-driven while featuring some action-packed comic book bonanzas.

The Court of Owls is the most original and long-lasting villain created for the Batman mythos in years, and its indoctrination into the culture of the character was almost immediate. The Court is taken as a given nowadays in any discussion of Batman's Rogues Gallery, and the first story arc is invariably the first comic I hand to anyone that wants to get into the character.

Death of the Family is also an iconic Joker story that knows what it's doing with every member of the Bat Family, which is a difficult feat to accomplish. Snyder's Joker is terrifying, and the way Capullo draws him really freaked me out as a kid, and leaves me in awe today. The collection of the series with all the tie-ins, The Joker: Death of the Family, includes the stories from the Bat-Family's perspective. You realize how engrained this villain is into the psychologies of every one of these characters, and how patient, aware, and appreciative Snyder is of the history. EVEN WHILE REBOOTING THE SERIES FOR THE NEW 52! Madman.

I slept on Zero Year when I read it forever ago for being long, confusing, and inconsequential. Upon revisiting it in its full glory, I was totally wrong. It's easily the most gorgeously colorful of all Capullo's arcs, and its rendition of the Riddler is fun, fresh, and vicious. I love how it pays homage to Batman's classic origin costume while telling a completely new origin. The Batman also totally cribbed its finale from Dark City's, which was a reference I wasn't expecting and made me love them both even more.

The backup stories are mostly solid. Capullo's art is stupendous, Snyder's at the top of his game before his descent into shitty madness in Dark Nights: Metal, and this book is awesome.

Five stars!

First, Goodreads list this as a 900-page book. It is well over 1,000 pages.

The stories here comprise three major arcs written by Scott Snyder and penciled by Greg Capullo. They are The Court of Owls, Death of the Family, and Zero Year.

The Court of Owls is a spectacular arc that delves into a dark Illuminati-like cabal that has been secretly running Gotham since the colonial era. It is unique and full of conspiracies and turns of twists. How it ends, though is a bit of a let-down for me anyway.

Death of the Family sees a major Joker storyline that pushes Batman and the entire Batman family to a breaking point and has Joker at one of his most twisted, murderous, and evil. Some of it does cross over into other titles, and unfortunately, they are not included in this omnibus. So there are going to be some minor plot points and that may be perplexing if you don't have those other comics to read.

Zero Year takes us back to a much earlier period in the Dark Knight's adventures. Before he was Batman, Bruce Wayne was just dipping his feet into the vigilante waters. So it is very early in his career. I'm not sure if it just skirts around the events of Frank Miller's classic Year One story or just ignores it altogether. These days, I just go with comic book history for eras since history, especially DC history, is rebooted so often. Though it is probably the weakest of the three major arcs, being divided into three mini-arcs itself, there are some memorable highlights. Kar Hellfern, Doctor Death, is a monster horror-level character in these stories. Edward Nygma, the Riddler is quite an interesting character, and also quite annoying. But there are just a few leaps in logic here that are Dark Knight Returns level.

Scott Snyder's writing is generally tight with a deep examination of Bruce Wayne and how he feels about Gotham beyond just aking up for the deaths of his parents. Greg Capullo's art is spectacular and really captures much of the noirish aspects of Gotham. And it seems the team is really at home making the reader cringe at some of the horrific aspects of their stories. Now that is a good thing as these are dark stories.

Overall it's a great read and run and the final issue in this omnibus sets up the 52-issue weekly run of Batman Eternal which is collected in its own omnibus.

Best Ever Batman Run
OVERALL RATING: 4.5 stars
Art: 5 stars
Prose: 4.5 stars
Plot: 4.5 stars
Pacing: 4.5 stars
Character Development: 4.5 stars
World Building: 4.5 stars

What a fantastic story. All the big hitter nemeses of Bats on full display and more terrifying than ever (that Joker's face). The Riddler and the Owls are also intense. The way Snyder goes backwards is excellent, slowly peeling back the layers of Bruce Wayne and manifesting his complexity brilliantly. Capullo is probably my favourite Batman artist and that is saying something as Hush is one of those masterworks I thought would never be surpassed. But here I am. There are a couple of very small nitpicks though. I felt the mapping was a little off. Issue 28 should probably have been included in the next omni. The Riddler Solitaire (Issue 23.2 and yep that is the silly issue number...) story probably should have turned up halfway through the Zero Year arc rather than the end as I felt Issue 33 perfectly rounded out this omni pointing back to Bruce Wayne's love for his city and his philanthropy and patronage that backs that up. These are tiny issues as this feels like a self contained story. One other nit-pick is the verbosity of Snyder. At times his story can feel too text heavy but, given the level of story telling and the creativity that cannot always be conveyed by even the greatest artist, one can forgive said misdemeanor.

The Court of Owls, Death of the Family and Zero Year, which constitute a majority of the content collected here, are perhaps my favorite Batman stories and deserve 5 stars in their own right but there is something lost in reading this modern classics in a giant brick. For archival purposes this collection is great as it collects the shorter arcs and one-offs that were released between the three aforementioned arcs, but as a format for reading any of those fantastic stories it’s unwieldy. The three major arcs here are epics in their own right and having them in one brick of a book is sort of lining owning three of your all time favorite films as a single non-stop video. If you’re looking to read Snyder and Capullo’s A+ run on Batman in its entirety this collection and its presumed but as yet unannounced follow-up are probably the way to go, but to drop in on any of the individual arcs I’d recommend checking out the slimmer trades, which you will be able to read in bed without fear of bashing your face with a brick of comics when you get sleepy.

No, no, no, no, no. 4.59/5 current score on Goodreads. You could mish mash all the criminals in Gotham together into one twisted amalgamation, and it still wouldn't be as much of a crime as this book being rated so highly. I would feign magnanimity and say I'm glad that lots of people liked it, but I can't be glad for people with such awful taste.
This is awful. Truly awful. I didn't like Court of Owls very much, and yet somehow, it's still the best thing about this vastly overhyped pile of nothing. And I thought Morrison's Batman run was bad, sheesh!
Snyder isn't that great, Capullo isn't that great, and Tynion certainly isn't that great. Quite how Snyder in particular was able to build up such a reputation for himself within the industry when this is supposedly his magnum opus is anyone's guess. This is mid tier, Batman by numbers at best. I can't think of a single issue I would care to re-read. I couldn't even finish Year Zero. It looked like it was coloured in a Skittles factory. Their isn't a shred of menace or atmosphere throughout this entire book, not to mention a single-issue story, or a story worth a damn for that matter. And no, the dreadful secondary stories don't count. That perfunctory cash grab is about as enticing as a cock flavoured lollipop. Just give me the Batman story proper. I'm not interested in the half baked sloppy seconds.
I went into this expecting something pretty dang special. Having read a few underwhelming books, surely Batman can't continue this disappointing run of stories I've been on. Oh, how wrong I was. I just sold my Morrison omni's. I wouldn't be at all surprised if these ones follow them quickly out the door. Don't let the high score fool you. This is mid at best. 2/5

This is Batman from right after The New 52 ended. And it's a pretty darn good interpretation of the character.

The Court of Owls is the big story arc in this large book. It's a good story, with a lot of background information about this strange group. I guess I can't seem to do one of these reviews without a little nitpick and the one for this book is: Batman not knowing about this group of string pulling assassins that had been running around Gotham for centuries seems contrived. To be fair, he seems to think they are a children's fable and so puts no effort into checking out this urban legend.

While this story some might consider the highlight of the book, I found the next arc, Death of the Family, more... interesting(?). The Joker is back and has evil designs on the entire Bat Family (their words, not mine), which includes a couple of Robins, Batgirl and Alfred the butler.

It's tales like this that make me wonder why no one (!) would have put the Joker away for good a long while ago. This version is vile with no redeeming traits and he deserves much worse than being put in a cell at Arkham, where he will just get away again.

The last major arc here is Zero Year, a story about the Riddler trying to take over Gotham City. This one has a lot of good interactions between Lt Gordon and Batman.

Then there is a section with variant covers from the original run and some character sketches.

This was one whopper of a book, but I enjoyed it.

One of my favorite things about Snyder is how much detail and effort he puts into the smallest details of each issue. The little things that not all fans may catch, at least on the first read, are quite the welcome addition. When it comes to Snyder's Batman run (for which I'm exclusively referring to the New 52 series), I found there to be two great stories, and a whole lot of "meh". For the record, I enjoy both halves of the Owls Saga, though I feel that the Night of the Owls isn't as strong. While I liked Court of Owls because it dealt with similar themes, everything else in Snyder’s run was so over the top with Gotham seemingly dealing with an existential threat every five or six issues. It just got so repetitive and boring. Too much action, too many sci fi comic book loopholes, not enough actual character development. Upon reflection, what I really enjoyed from Snyder's run is Capullo's art. It is fantastic from start to finish. THAT SAID I think Zero Year is the clear high point of the run and a great Batman story in general. It’s not as good as Year One of course, but I respect that Snyder went in the complete opposite direction and delivered a big, fun, vibrant story. Lots of great imagery throughout and all the mini-arcs come together in a satisfying way without feeling overwrought. Where many of Snyder’s Batman arcs have gotten weaker on rereads I always have a good time with Zero Year.

What a blast to read through from start to finish.

This book starts off with the classic Court of Owls arc. Tells of a secret that Gotham City has been hiding for years. Some good twists and turns here featuring a different unique villain.

Death of the Family was also a lot of fun seeing The Joker get up to his usual depravity. He is so well written here and his whole cut off face situation makes him seem even more unhinged than usual.

Zero Year was a great trip into the past showcasing a younger less experienced Bruce as Batman. Seeing the dynamic here between him and Alfred who is desperate for him to pursue a normal life was a nice touch since we know how that ends up. The Riddler poses a significant threat here and features such classic cat and mouse sequences.

All three major arcs were major page turners and the side stories sprinkled throughout were decent too.

If I had to find a negative it's probably the side stories featuring Harper and Cullen but even they aren't so bad and bring something new and fresh to the Batman mythos.

Oh hell yeah, one of the best Batman runs I’ve ever read! Every main story arc in here(with exception of the Mr. Freeze story) was brilliant! The court of owls was original and mind-bending! Death Of The Family was disturbing and psychological! Zero Year was an absolute hell of an origin story for this version of Bruce! Some of the greatest Batman stories ever told are in this! ANYONE who has any interest in Batman needs to pick this up! It’s a must-read! 5/5 Stars!

Unbelievably good storyline that build a strong brooding Bruce Wayne into Batman. The arc of the characters and a chance to look at Batman during Year Zero (how it all began) make this a must-read for any fan.
Likewise, the artwork is stunning, adding much intrigue to the panels.

I've never read a Batman comic before, but I was recommended this one by a friend a couple years ago. Glad I finally followed through in checking it out. Beautifully drawn and written. Actually a little scary. Had some formatting fuckery to twist your mind a bit. Loved every second. Highly recommend, especially if you've never read a Batman comic before.

I really enjoyed this after going through a bit of a dry read with the sandman series, this had a lot more “action” in it. Great artwork. Same characters you know and love. I really liked the zero year and the whole riddler storyline. The joker stuff seems too over done. Definitely recommend!!

its 1000 pages or more of Batman goodness in all its glory!.. Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's run should be on every Batman fans Must read list. The Owls story line is one of the best Batman stories ever and except for some tie-ins missing, this is one of the best formats to read it.
There are several mini stories or fillers included, which in turn tell a story in the background,

Although not a great detective story... This is one of the definitive Batman stories, with some amazing art and out the world action sequences, which makes each page turn exciting and god he takes all kinds of beating in this one!!

The Joker and Dr.freeze bits made a chill run down my spine and the art does great justice!
A great batman story and truly art suited for a batman of our times!..

Superb collection of batman stories. Also my first introduction to the batman comics. Some issues I didn't like, but those were mostly the one shots issues with guest writers. The year zero storyline was in my opinion underwhelming. The story arcs with the owls at the beginning, followed by the joker his story arcs are the strongest parts of the omnibus.

I always liked Capullo his art. What a boss to have drawn more than 2000? 3000? 4000? pages of batman art since he is still busy with the current running batman series. Together with the huge amount of art he did for spawn and some other series, what an productive artist. Not that every page is great, but overall it's really good.

Containing the Court of Owls arc, Death of the Family, and Zero Year; this is Scott Snyder at his absolute best. The art by Greg Capullo is some of the best in the business, and Capullo makes Batman appear menacing and at his peak. Anyone looking to get into Batman comics should begin here, as this gives you Batman’s newest origin (Zero Year) and two masterpieces of storytelling with The Court of Owls and Death of the Family. The Court and their Talons have become some of the coolest Batman villains introduced in recent memory, and the Joker is also a fun time. He appears here as a sinister, master of chaos. His appearance is terrifying, and Capullo and Snyder’s love of horror shines through. The moment with Joker killing the cops at the GCPD is spine chilling.

Batman works best when his stories flex not only his physical prowess, but also his detective skills. This has both, with Court of Owls having Batman unravel the mystery of the Court and finding out how to defeat them, and Zero Year having Riddler test Batman’s strategic abilities and aptitude.

All around one of my favourite Batman collections, and some of the best Batman stories of the last decade.

The only downside to the Omnibus itself is the quality of its binding. The physical book does not stay open on its own, and has some major gutter loss. It’s not major to me, but I know others find this to be a deal breaker so I figured I’d mention it.

One of the better batman runs but doesn’t include ANY crossover issues outside of batman so I read companion event books alongside.
A few iconic stories here but I think reading this through has shown me I’m a much bigger fan of the bat family than of bruce/batman and his solo focused stories although fun, get very repetitive.
I would give it 3.5 overall, not quite a 4 but still way better than Kings run.
