Prayers to Sophia

Rate this book
Now in a beautiful new companion book, Joyce courageously offers fifty prayers from her personal journal. Rather than presenting an intellectual study or theological debate on the subject of Sophia, her words share a relationship with Sophia that is steeped in life experience and enriched with poetic metaphor. The added touches of quotations from the Wisdom literature, questions for personal reflection, and suggestions for journaling combine to gently nudge seekers toward the discovery of new riches on their spiritual journey.

This book caught my attention. First of all, I knew the author. Then she states that Sophia is the feminine part of God. It is nice to think He also has a feminine side. Then Ms. Rupp writes 50 poems calling upon Sophia to help us through out daily lives. I especially liked "Befriending My Aging." It relates the creaks and groans of aging but prays that Sophia will help to accept them and embrace them. She also has many wonderful poems about nature and the beauty of childhood. I thought her poetry was beautiful, so apt for what she wanted to express. I am not a great reader of poetry, but to me this book was exceptional.

I have never picked up a book by Joyce Rupp that I did not love. Her devotion to Sophia, embodiment of Wisdom, of the feminine divine, is touching and inspiring. Her offerings of personal vulnerability and probing questions for the reader deepen the beauty and power of this book.
