About the author

Many works, including Siddhartha (1922) and Steppenwolf (1927), of German-born Swiss writer Hermann Hesse concern the struggle of the individual to find wholeness and meaning in life; he won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1946.

Other best-known works of this poet, novelist, and painter include The Glass Bead Game , which, also known as Magister Ludi, explore a search of an individual for spirituality outside society.

In his time, Hesse was a popular and influential author in the German-speaking world; worldwide fame only came later. Young Germans desiring a different and more "natural" way of life at the time of great economic and technological progress in the country, received enthusiastically Peter Camenzind , first great novel of Hesse.

Throughout Germany, people named many schools. In 1964, people founded the Calwer Hermann-Hesse-Preis, awarded biennially, alternately to a German-language literary journal or to the translator of work of Hesse to a foreign language. The city of Karlsruhe, Germany, also associates a Hermann Hesse prize.

Dieses Buch enthält einige Prosa Texte aus Hesses frühem Werk. Als echtes kleines Hesse Fangirl habe ich mich sehr auf dieses Buch gefreut und mich besonders an der wunderschönen Ausgabe erfreut.
Besonders gefallen hat mir wie immer der Schreibstil. Hesse hat so eine besondere Art mit der Sprache und den Worten umzugehen, die mich immer wieder in seinen Bann zieht. Die Geschichten an sich fand ich allerdings sehr kryptisch und ich hatte teilweise das Gefühl nicht ganz „dahinterzukommen“ worum es eigentlich geht. Nichtsdestotrotz war die Lektüre sehr angenehm und ich habe mich zeitweise richtig zwischen den Worten verloren. Und meine Lust weiterhin noch mehr Werke von Hesse zu lesen wurde auch bestärkt.

Ha sido como leer un apóstrofe muy largo. Las temáticas son recurrentes y previsibles. El estilo peca de excesiva pomposidad, pero es detallado en las descripciones. La fuerza metafórica queda demasiado dispersa a la hora de expresar el mensaje deseado.

Ein Testleserexemplar, was mich neugierig gemacht hat. Ich bin Fan schöner Worte und romantischer Methapern. Die hat das Buch auf jeden Fall gehabt. Aber diese verklärte, verworrene Art zu Schreiben hat mich auf Dauer nicht glücklich gemacht. In das Buch kann man immer mal wieder reinlesen, aber am Stück lesen, fand ich ziemlich anstrengend. Und diese typische weibliche Darstellung hat mich etwas aufgeregt. Dünne, weiße Körper als Ideal, total bekloppt.

Me encanto la variedad de historias y como cada una reflejaba la misma idea, para integrar la idea de la vida eterna cuando surge de nuestra alma lo más bello lo más inocente, lo más noble de nuestra existencia y la vida y los sueños se va integrando en un modo de ser total representa la síntesis del arte y del pensamiento de Herman Hesse.

I can't say that I fully understood the plot of this book, it felt as if I was reading vague fragments of someone's dreams. The only reason I kept reading is because the language in which it was written was quite literary and philosophical.
