《江上的母親》為一篇篇的靜文組成，但大抵分為「輓歌」與「塵世」兩大部分。上篇「輓歌」談的是大歷史下的家族與友人之無奈與心酸，讀完會有一種很心痛的感覺，但野夫用筆卻是非常精準到不浮誇的筆調委委道出一個個死亡的故事；下篇「塵世」寫下與朋友淘心之交的種種以及時事暗喻的評論，不失為一條漢子。
