Long before politics beckoned, he spent six years of his life living on the rugged Illinois frontier in the primitive village of New Salem.
During the 1830's he had been a store clerk, postmaster, and a captain of the militia in the Blackhawk War. But nothing in his life experience could have prepared him for what would become a journey into all things spiritual.
This is the story of young Lincoln during those crucial years from the ages of 22 to 28, what he would learn from love and heartbreak, and how it would both haunt and inspire him all the rest of his life.
From the Author of A Return to Meadow Wood comes a new inspirational book.
After the Vietnam war, Sam’s interest in novel writing was rekindled from his childhood. Believing he had survived death for a purpose, he became a writer of faith-based and inspirational stories. In the past eight years, Sam has written three such books for your enjoyment: NAOMI'S JOURNEY INTO THE LIGHT, YOUNG LINCOLN OF NEW SALEM and A RETURN TO MEADOW WOOD. These books will uplift your soul.
Capturing a real time in someones life is not easy and the work that it would have taken to study Lincoln in this book is shown very early on. The author clearly takes you on a journey through some of the years of Lincoln's life in a way that is interesting not like dusting of an old history book.
Most people know the Lincoln who was 16th President of the United States during the Civil War which devastated the country. They know that he was assassinated and there is a huge memorial to him in Washington DC. If they look at the five-dollar bill they are reminded of him and maybe they remember some of the things he said, most notably the Gettysburg Address. But few are those who know the man behind the legend, the real measure of the man they claim to admire.
Sam Rawlins has drawn together firsthand sources to craft an interesting and often emotion filled tome. Although this volume is constructed as a novel the author has taken the known events, witness testimonies, and historical data to put together a realistic understanding of the events which molded much of what we know as Abraham Lincoln. It is true to form and not some wild imagining of the author. Everything may have, and probably really did happen just as Rawlins portrays it in the book.
The central point of the book is Lincoln’s spiritual growth and how those in his life helped develop that pivotal aspect of his life. Rawlins highlights how, although Lincoln never became part of a church, he had a very deep and abiding Spiritual walk. In fact, according to the facts related in the book, this aspect really guided his path and made him the man he became. It is a lesson all of us should take to heart.
SPOILER ALERT: Maybe the most captivating aspect of the book is the emotional turmoil which surrounded Lincoln’s life. Death was his constant companion. Pain is written on every page. Anguish and heartache desolate his life with all too frequent visitations. Not only did Lincoln suffer slave like conditions under the harsh cruel hard-fisted drunken father who sired him, he also lost most everyone who was close to him along the way.
They are few sections of the book which could use some reworking as they come across stiff and don’t flow well. But there are other sections, particularly the key sections related to Ann Rutledge’s death, that brought me to tears. The pain Lincoln endured jumps out at the reader and draws the reader into the very fabric of the story.
The author has done his job well. He brings Abraham Lincoln to life for a new generation to get to know, understand, and admire.
Upon request the publisher sent me a copy of the book to review.
This book is very well written. The author has written about a time period in Lincoln’s life that not many have. Lincoln’s thoughts and feelings are noted, showing the author did exhaustive research and put a lot of thought into his writing. This book brings Lincoln alive to the reader as a man, not just his accomplishments achieved later in his life. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who would like a true sense of who Lincoln was and how his early life influenced him throughout.
Young Lincoln of New Salem is well written and offers insight into the young life of Abraham Lincoln without just listing facts. It made me even more grateful for President Lincoln, his faith in God, and the sacrifices he made for our country.
