Breathtakingly gorgeous and hauntingly beautiful. Thats how one should probably depict this photo-book. As a lifelong fan of abandoned places, I obviously got extremely excited when I first discovered this book, primarily intrigued by the photographic aspect of it. But the stories behind the photos are equaly great, which actually makes ”Abandoned Places” a must-feel-and-read-and-repeat. Bonus: A geography and history lesson regarding the de-facto-sovereign state of Abkhazia. Personal bonus: an abandoned landmark in my own country, one of which I knew nothing about. Cannot wait to get myself acquainted with other works of Henk van Rensbergen. :)

The photos of Henk are really very nice and seem to capture the right atmosphere (and light and angle). By looking at photo’s you wonder why these places are abandoned and some locations show that the people left without caring for what they left behind. Amazing, especially the photos taken in Abkhazia, part of “Georgië”.

Henk Van Rensbergen kan gezien worden als een pionier van Urban Exploring in belgië. Al dertig jaar bezoekt hij in zijn vrije tijd verlaten gebouwen. Dit kunnen fabrieken zijn, ziekenhuizen, gewone huizen, hotels of zelfs pretparken. Dit alles probeert hij fotografisch in beeld te brengen.
Ik bekeek zijn eerste boek Abandoned Places dat hij uitbracht in 2007. In dit boek neemt hij ons mee op een reis door eigen land. Maar niet om de schoonheid in beeld te brengen maar wel de vergankelijkheid van bepaalde gebouwen.
De foto’s zijn op groot formaat afgebeeld zodat men makkelijk alles kan zien wat erop staat. Het grootste deel van de foto’s zijn bewerkt in zwart-wit. Henk wijkt hier maar een enkele keer vanaf . Wat Henk een startend fotograaf als mezelf kan leren is het spelen met het aanwezige licht of hoe je zelf een sfeer schept door eigen licht in het beeld te brengen.
Sfeer scheppen met licht, spelen met vormen. Een overzicht van een locatie of ruimte zit in dit boek , maar Van Rensbergen kiest er soms ook voor om maar een deel van een ruimte het verhaal te laten vertellen.
Henk toont met dit boek dat vergane glorie ook perfect op de gevoelige plaat te vangen is. Wat voorbijgangers zien als een oud en versleten gebouw brengt hij weer gewoon tot leven met zijn fotografie.

The photos are displayed in large format so that it is easy to see everything that is on them. Most of the photos are edited in black and white. Henk only deviates from this once . What Henk can teach a starting photographer like myself is how to play with the available light or how to create an atmosphere yourself by bringing your own light into the image.
Create atmosphere with light, play with shapes. This book provides an overview of a location or space, but Van Rensbergen sometimes chooses to let only part of a space tell the story.
Henk shows with this book that faded glory can also be perfectly captured on film. What passers-by see as an old and worn-out building, he simply brings back to life with his photography.

it’s been a while since I got my hands on something as fascinating as this 💙. I’ve always loved abandoned places, and how you can spend hours just thinking about how there used to be a life there, in any sense. piles of books, personal pictures and captivating decorations all over the walls, plants finding their way through every crack and broken window ; all of it making a still scenary.

Too little text and the translation is not particularly good, and some photos are thrown in at random, breaking the narrative flow. The photos are gorgeous though too small. I feel like this book does a disservice to the photographer's talent and photography.

Een heel fascinerend boek met prachtige foto's van raadselachtige plaatsen, gebouwen in verval, leeggeroofd, onttakeld, overwoekerd door planten. Jammer alleen dat het kleine formaat van het boek voor deze foto's eigenlijk ongeschikt is.
In het nawoord schrijft Van Rensbergen 'My photos, always detailed and seemingly objective, are open to interpretation and imagination. Ultimately, it is the speactator who rewrites the story of what took place: observation and imagination bring the buildings back to life'. Het is waar dat een deel van de aantrekkelijkheid van de foto's is dat je je gaat afvragen wat er in deze ruimtes allemaal gebeurd kan zijn. Maar het is ook het verval zelf dat een vreemde aantrekkingskracht uitoefent. Het is een krachtig memento mori, dit is wat er ook zal gebeuren met de woningen en gebouwen waar we nu in leven, met de woningen en gebouwen waar we nu plannen voor maken, en natuurlijk met onszelf. Het zijn juist de totaal vervallen theaters (een paar van de mooiste foto's in het boek) die het scherpst het contrast oproepen tussen het leven (het gelach, het gehuil, de ontroering) dat er zich heeft afgespeeld en de huidige staat. En daarmee het gevoel van 'Voorbij, voorbij, en o, voorgoed voorbij'. Terwijl het de natuurlijke gang van zaken is en je ook niet zou (kunnen) willen dat het anders ging. Integendeel, het verval hoort bij het leven en heeft zijn eigen schoonheid.

I enjoyed flicking through this because I have a penchant for abandoned buildings.
I find them mesmerising and am often very eager to explore but, as my history records, I do not.
The things that hold me back are trespassing laws, a fear of mould, pests, men, asbestos and falling through rotten floorboards.
Clearly some people (men) have no apprehensions (this is why women live longer).
Anyways, with that in mind, this little book felt a good middle ground and I learned some tidbits too.

Un magnifique livre créé comme un reportage photo avec quelques explications des moments de vie ou des sensation ressentie par l’auteur au moment de la photo. Ici, on suit un pilote de ligne qui a une passion pour les lieux abandonnés. On le suit dans une multitude de pays différents et ressent toute l’excitation et la bienveillance de ses découvertes.

I remember seeing the author’s web site years ago, so when I saw this book in a Nuremberg shop, I grabbed it. It’s well worth a look - or two. The photographs are evocative and the stories that accompany the images are engaging and entertaining. It’s a quick read but something you may want to come back to a few times.

Nadherna zbierka fotografii urban exploration z celeho sveta. Autor popisuje ako sa dostal do jednotlivych objektov, ako to tam vyzeralo, pripadne ci sa stretol so straznikmi alebo na co dany objekt sluzil.

I'd been wondering for a long time what the Antwerp stock exchange would look like on the inside - I had no idea it was this beautiful. Quite a few beautiful and eerie pictures in this collection, well worth a look. The text needed some editing though, I smiled at the "Fleminglish" at times.
